Turning Images into Words: Audio Description in Animated Films

Abstract: Audio description (AD) provides an opportunity for blind and visually impaired individuals to access the visual aspects of one specific scene. This master’s thesis considers AD characteristics and analyses professional AD in animated film trailers. The main aims are to discover and search for typical and possible adequate AD elements with identification of similar patterns in the professional and non-professional AD transcripts. The theoretical part introduces the field of audio-visual practice with the main target audience of blind and visually impaired community. A particular emphasis is given to the process of creating AD materials, linguistic elements, production techniques, typical features and general guidelines. An additional section offers an insight into performing options and unique AD practice skills and competences. In the second part, the selected professional audio descriptions from animated movie trailers are transcribed and analysed in the terms of AD guidelines and other identified features. The thesis establishes the main characteristics of AD texts by non-professionals and compares and identifies their choice of descriptions. The further comparison gives the emphasis on the main correlation between the professional and non-professional AD transcripts. For this purpose, the analysis consists of three main categories: characters; actions, reactions, movements; setting, scenery, viewpoints and background scenes. Particular focus is put on general-specific and subjective-objective markers, where the intent is to identify the potential AD elements in accordance with the professional AD guidelines and highlight the participants’ textual examples, suggestions, level of details, interpretative patterns, the involvement of specific objects and similar patterns included in the AD transcripts.

Providing the success of Six Sigma by proper project identification and selection

Abstract: Results of Six Sigma projects are related to company performance. Successful Six Sigma projects increase customer satisfaction and have many other positive effects on organisations. Success of Six Sigma projects is related to key management decision about how to identify potential projects and which projects to select for final implementation. This research is oriented toward the study of tools used in the phase of Six Sigma project identification and criteria used in the phase of Six Sigma project selection. The purpose of this research is to compare results from manufacturing sector in Slovenia and the UK. Results of this study indicate that management within the organisations tend to identify potential Six Sigma projects with the use of different tools, such as: brainstorming (Slovenia and UK.), followed by Critical To Quality tree (UK.), and interviews and customer visits (Slovenia). Further, the results show that the final decision about Six Sigma projects selection in the UK and Slovenia include different criteria, such as: customer benefit (Slovenia and UK), finance impact (UK) and connection to business strategy (Slovenia). Many companies in the UK as well in Slovenia combine the use of tools and balanced selection criteria at the same time.

O identifikaciji parametrov sinhronskega generatorja med obratovanjem z uporabo linearnega ekvivalenta

Abstract: V članku je obravnavana zmožnost identifikacije parametrov sinhronskega generatorja iz dinamičnih meritev na priključnih sponkah z uporabo linearnega ekvivalenta. Predstavljena je metoda, ki to izvede z izčrpnim pregledovanjem. Uporabljeni model generatorja ima po dve dušilni navitji na vsaki od osi rotorjev. Ker so meritve izvedene na priključnih sponkah je dinamika rotorjevega kota in vrtilne hitrosti nepoznana. Za namen študije se je simuliralo delovanje sinhronskega generatorja priključenega na togo mrežo. V simulaciji se je vzbujalna napetost stopničasto spremenila. Za iskanje parametrov sinhronskega generatorja je bilo uporabljeno izčrpno preiskovanje možnih parametrov, saj se s to metodo lahko najde vse možne kombinacije parametrov, ki zadovoljujejo kriterije identifikacije. Ob ugotovitvi, da nekateri parametri ne vplivajo na nekatere merjene signale, se je pojavila možnost uporabe razcepljene identifikacije. Brez omenjene razcepitve izčrpna metoda iskanja ne bi bila izvedljiva. Ker je bilo v študiji ugotovljeno, da zelo različni parametri dajejo zelo podobne rezultate za dinamične signale avtorji zaključijo, da parametrov modela generatorja osmega reda ne moremo identificirati z identifikacijskimi metodami, ki uporabljajo linearne ekvivalente.

Congruence between methods for identifying "exceptional physical aptitude" in school children

Abstract: The aim of this paper was to research the compatibility among various techniques (motor testing and teacher identification) for the identification of exceptional physical aptitude in students. The study was conducted on a sample of 503 children (241 girls and 262 boys) aged 10 % 10.5 and 25 teachers. It was confirmed that there was a statistically significant low correlation between the technique of motor testing and that of teacher identification (for girls r = 0.41; p < 0.01 and for boys r = 0.43; p < 0.01). Through a precise analysis of the subsamples of boys and girls identified through motor testing and teacher recognition, it was noted that the teachers successfully recognized 23 boys with high physical aptitude (54.8 %) and 17 girls with high physical aptitude (50 %). The results of this research can serve as a basis for a reliable identification of pupils with advanced physical aptitude and further work with them in the range of Physical Education and special school programs for the gifted in sport.

Incorporation of duffing oscillator and Wigner-Ville distribution in traffic flow prediction

Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the use of various chaotic pattern recognition methods for traffic flow prediction. Traffic flow is a variable, dynamic and complex system, which is non-linear and unpredictable. The emergence of traffic flow congestion in road traffic is estimated when the traffic load on a specific section of the road in a specific time period is close to exceeding the capacity of the road infrastructure. Under certain conditions, it can be seen in concentrating chaotic traffic flow patterns. The literature review of traffic flow theory and its connection with chaotic features implies that this kind of method has great theoretical and practical value. Researched methods of identifying chaos in traffic flow have shown certain restrictions in their techniques but have suggested guidelines for improving the identification of chaotic parameters in traffic flow. The proposed new method of forecasting congestion in traffic flow uses Wigner-Ville frequency distribution. This method enables the display of a chaotic attractor without the use of reconstruction phase space.

Effect of rurality and of human capital resources in the entrepreneurial opportunity identification process

Abstract: In this paper, that is a country study of Slovenia, we tried to determine why individuals in rural residential areas are less likely to recognize entrepreneurial opportunities. Our results show that the increase in resources in human capital, consisting of education, skills, knowledge, and experiences in entrepreneurship, has a significant and positive effect on opportunity identification. For policy creators, our results suggest that policies focused on entrepreneurial education— especially education that would enable the acquisition of real-life entrepreneurial experiences and skills—are useful, especially in rural areas.

Molecular identification of several clinically important bacteria including enterobacteria by partial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence comparison

Abstract: Background: The correct identification of bacterial isolates is paramount for the correct diagnosis and treatment of patients. The standard approach for bacterial identification relies on phenotypic tests, which are often time-consuming and unreliable when identifying atypical strains. We instead hypothesized a molecular approach; fast and reliable identification could be achieved by comparing a 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence with publicly available sequences. Methods: In the present study, DNA from seventeen bacterial species was extracted and amplified by PCR, and then a partial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence was obtained and compared with sequences deposited in public DNA sequence databases; EMBL/GeneBank/DDBJ and RDP-II. Results: Bacterial species, belonging to several families; Coriobacteriaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Clostri- diaceae, Staphylococcaceae, as well as three out of nine Enterobacteriaceae were specifically identified by partial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence to the species level. For six other species of enteric bacteria specific identification of species failed, since the results of genotypic identification yielded several species. Conclusions: We conclude identification of bacteria with partial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence is an efficient complement to phenotypic identification, except for enteric bacteria.

Fault detection of an industrial heat-exchanger

Abstract: One of the key issues in modelling for fault detection is how to accommodate the level of detail of the model description in order to suit the diagnostic requirements. The paper addresses a two-stage modelling concept to an industrial heat exchanger, which is located in a tyre factory. Modelling relies on combination of prior knowledge and recorded data. During the identification procedure, the estimates of continuous model parameters are calculated by the least squares method and the state variable filters (SVF). It is shown that the estimates are largely invariant of the bandwidth of the SVFs. This greatly reduces the overall modelling effort and makes the whole concept applicable even to less experienced users. The main issues of the modelling procedure are stressed. Based on the process model a simple detection system is derived. An excerpt of the results obtained on operating records is given.

On graph identification problems and the special case of identifying vertices using paths

Abstract: V članku uvedemo problem identifikacije s potmi: pokritje z identifikacijskimi potmi grafa ▫$G$▫ je množica poti ▫$mathcal{P}$▫, za katere velja, da vsako vozlišče leži na vsaj eni poti iz ▫$mathcal{P}$▫, in za vsak par vozlišč $u,v$ obstaja pot iz ▫$mathcal{P}$▫, ki vsebuje natanko eno izmed vozlišč ▫$u$▫ in ▫$v$▫. Ta problem je soroden raznim variantam identifikacijskih problemov. Problem pokritja z identifikacijskimi potmi obravnavamo na nekaterih družinah grafov. Izpeljemo optimalne velikosti za pokritja z identifikacijskimi potmi za: poti, cikle, hiperkocke in topološka drevesa ter podamo zgornjo mejo za poljubna drevesa. Podamo tudi spodnje in zgornje meje za minimalno velikost pokritja z identifikacijskimi potmi za poljubne grafe in obravnavamo natančnost mej. Pokažemo, da poljuben povezan graf ▫$G$▫ premore pokritje z identifikacijskimi potmi velikosti kvečjemu ▫$Biglceil frac{2(|V(G)|-1)}{3} Bigrceil$▫. Obravnavamo tudi računsko zahtevnost pripadajočega optimizacijskega problema in pokažemo, da v primeru, ko so dolžine poti iz pokritja fiksne dolžine, sodi problem med APX-polne probleme.
