Automated fingerprint identification system application for system's equal error rate evaluation

Opis: Automated fingerprint identification system has an increasingly important rolein modern times. This study presents the steps of the automated fingerprint identification system and presents an application for fingerprint identification and system's equal error rate evaluation. The algorithm for fingerprint image enhancement is a key element of the system. A fingerprint image can be damaged, damp, too dry, worn, scratched, etc. Therefore it is necessary to enhance the image to the point where we can obtain a clearly defined structure of ridges and valleys and consequently also correctly determined features. This study also presents a comparison of error rate evaluation between the original fingerprint image and the enhanced fingerprintimage, and introduces an application for fingerprint matching. The matching algorithm compares two fingerprints and establishes a correct match, if the fingerprints belong to the same person, or a non-match, if they belong to different persons.

Efficiency analysis of compared normalization methods for fingerprint image enhancement

Opis: The efficiency of automated fingerprint identification system depends highly on fingerprint image enhancement algorithms. Fingerprint image enhancement canbe divided into two stages: 1) At the first stage we enhance the image withconventional filters, where filter parameters do not change. 2) At the second stage we enhance the structure of ridges and valleys with contextual filters, where filter parameters change according to pre-calculated ridge orientation and frequency. This article presents an efficiency analysis of compared methods at the first stage with global normalization, local normalization and block local normalization, attempts to find the most efficient combination and evaluates the effectiveness of analysed methods fromthe perspective of their use in real time fingerprint identification systems. In the experimental part we compared three different types of normalization algorithms for enhancing image contrast, and then in combinationwith the second enhancement stage (Gabor filter and STFT) we assessed the enhancement system's effectiveness on database FVC2004.
