Chelation of iron(II) ions by ellagitannins - effects of hexahydroxydiphenoyl and nonahydroxytriphenoyl groups
Franjo Frešer, Urban Bren, Gregor Hostnik, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: Tannins represent secondary plant metabolites that are used to control bacterial populations by chelation of essential metal ions. Their presence in food also affects the bioavailability of iron. This study investigates the influence of ellagitannins (vescalin, castalin, vescalagin, castalagin) structure and pH on the stoichiometry and formation constants of ellagitannin-Fe(II) coordination compounds. We demonstrated that ellagitannins are stable for at least one hour at pH values lower than 7.25. The spectra of neutral compounds were measured and explained with the help of TDDFT calculations. Furthermore, the pH-dependence of the ellagitannins UV–Vis spectra was examined to obtain insight into their protolytic equilibrium. Using Job’s method in the pH range 3.50–5.51, the stoichiometry of the formed ellagitannin-Fe(II) ions complexes was determined. A model explaining interactions between ellagitannins and Fe(II) ions, that took into account the protolytic equilibrium of ellagitannins, was fitted globally to all four Job plots, whereby the corresponding formation constants were obtained.

Coupling of nematic in-plane orientational ordering and equilibrium shapes of closed flexible nematic shells
Luka Mesarec, Wojciech Góźdź, Veronika Kralj-Iglič, Samo Kralj, Aleš Iglič, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: The impact of the intrinsic curvature of in-plane orientationally ordered curved flexible nematic molecules attached to closed 3D flexible shells was studied numerically. A Helfrich-Landau-de Gennes-type mesoscopic approach was adopted where the flexible shell’s curvature field and in-plane nematic field are coupled and concomitantly determined in the process of free energy minimisation. We demonstrate that this coupling has the potential to generate a rich diversity of qualitatively new shapes of closed 3D nematic shells and the corresponding specific in-plane orientational ordering textures, which strongly depend on the shell’s volume-to-surface area ratio, so far not predicted in mesoscopic-type numerical studies of 3D shapes of closed flexible nematic shells.

P-x,y equilibrium data of the binary systems of 2-propanol, 1-butanol and 2-butanol with carbon dioxide at 313.15 K and 333.15 K
Dragana Borjan, Maša Knez Marevci, Željko Knez, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: The ability to predict the behaviour of high-pressure mixtures of carbon dioxide and alcohol is important for industrial purposes. The equilibrium composition of three binary carbon dioxide-alcohol systems was measured at temperatures of 313.15 K and 333.15 K and at pressures of up to 100 bar for carbon dioxide-2-propanol, up to 160 bar for carbon dioxide-1-butanol and up to 150 bar for carbon dioxide-2-butanol. Different equilibrium compositions of carbon dioxide in alcohols were observed despite their similar molecular weight (M2-propanol = 60.100 g mol−1, M1-butanol = 74.121 g mol−1 and M2-butanol = 74.122 g mol−1) and place in the functional hydroxyl group (first or second carbon molecule). It is assumed that the differences in the phase equilibria are due to different vapor pressures, polarities and solute-solute interactions.

The stability of the excavation face of shallow civil and mining tunnels
Pierpaolo Oreste, 2011, original scientific article

Abstract: The stability of the excavation face of shallow tunnels excavated in difficult ground conditions is currently a relevant problem in the sector for tunnelling and mining. Even though face-reinforcement interventions with fibreglass dowels have proved to be efficient, there is still no reliable analysis and dimensioning method available. A new calculation procedure is illustrated in this paper for the analysis of the face static condition in shallow tunnels, also when reinforcement interventions with fibreglass dowels are used. The procedure is based on the limit-equilibrium method applied to the ground core ahead of the face. The main result of the calculation is that the safety factor of the excavation face is also obtained in the presence of reinforcements and from this it is then possible to proceed with the dimensioning of the intervention. The procedure has been applied to two real cases and satisfactory results have been obtained.

Analytical and numerical factor of safety (uls) calculations on reinforced embankments
Tadej Vidnar, 2017, master's thesis

Abstract: This thesis deals with factor of safety calculations on geogrid reinforced embankments carried out by commonly used limit equilibrium (LEM) and finite element methods (FEM). The study utilize LEM based software SLIDE and FEM based software PHASE2. The main difference between these two approaches is that the LEM methods are based on the static of equilibrium whereas FEM methods utilise the stress strain relationship. Unlike to LEM, numerical analysis also computes displacements. For practical example of a geogrid reinforced embankment the factor of safeta (FoS) is calculated. Reinforced soil structures are nowadays utilized for a lot of civil engineering applications. Traditionally, the design of geogrid reinforced soil is performed using analytical methods (LEM). Unfortunately, these methods missing the fundamental physics of stress-strain relationship and are therefore not able to compute a realistic stress distribution. In first step of the analysis the FoS is carried out with analytical approach. The most rigorous LEM methods, Bishop’s, Spencer’s and Morgenstern-Price are selected and the FoS for circular and polygonal slip surface is calculated. In second step of the analysis the FoS is carried out with numerical approach. Shear strength reduction (SSR) procedure was performed to determine the critical strength reduction factor (SRF) which represents the FoS of slope.

Zastrupitev z etilenglikolom
Nina Vodošek Hojs, Robert Ekart, Franc Svenšek, 2011, professional article

Abstract: Zastrupitve z etilenglikolom so dokaj redke. Etilenglikol je sam po sebi malo toksičen, hudo zastrupitev povzročajo predvsem njegovi presnovni produkti. Prikazani primer obravnava značilno klinično sliko (nevrološka, kardiopulmonalna in ledvična faza) in laboratorijske rezultate (povišana serumska osmolalnost, povišana osmolalna vrzel, metabolična acidoza s povišano anionsko vrzeljo, kristali kalcijevega oksalata v urinu) ob zastrupitvi z etilenglikolom. Hitra prepoznava je nujna, saj sta obolevnost in smrtnost po zastrupitvi visoki. Zdravljenje vključuje vzdrževanje dihalne poti, dihanja in krvnega obtoka, infuzijo bikarbonata, dajanje antidota (etanol, fomepizol), hemodializo, včasih tudi zdravljenje s kofaktorji presnove etilenglikola (tiamin, piridoksin, magnezij).

HIGH PRESSURE PHASE EQUILIBRIUM OF THE BINARY SYSTEM TWEEN 80 AND CARBON DIOXIDE
Natalija Novak, 2014, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: In the frame of the diploma thesis we researched the phase equilibrium of the binary system Tween 80 and CO2. Equilibrium compositions of the system have been determined with a static analytical method at temperature 40, 60 and 80 °C and pressures up to 300 bar. The obtained data was plotted in isothermal diagrams where mass percentage is presented as a function of pressure. In this work also the viscosity of Tween 80 was determined in the temperature range between 20 and 80°C and shear rates up to 180 s-1. The measurements were obtained by using coaxial cylinder and compared with available literature data.

Modeling of city logistics
Sabrina Trafela, 2013, master's thesis

Abstract: Master thesis has it's fundamentals in the use of theoretical methods for modeling purposes on the case study of city logistics and modeling of traffic flow and transportation problem on the city of Győr, Hungary. In practical part, we made a measurements of traffic flow on street sections in the city of Győr. With Android application, we gathered necessary data. We also prepared maps of the route sections of the city from various entry points to the final, destination point. Purpose of our thesis was finding the optimal solution for the delivery to the city centre with the use of strategic games. Final step was a preparation of mathematical model in Mathematica programming environment, which gave us results, but most important is the development of the model itself. Model is constructed in a way that can be use in various possible situations and on different city centres or case studies.

Donnan equilibrium and osmotic pressure in hollow polyelectrolyte microcapsules
David Haložan, Gleb B. Sukhorukov, Milan Brumen, Edwin Donath, Helmuth Möhwald, 2007, original scientific article

Abstract: A simple theoretical model of the Donnan equilibrium is applied to studies of distributions of ions between the external and internal volumes of hollow polyelectrolyte capsules as well as of concomitant osmotic pressure load on a capsule wall resulting from these distributions and the presence of polyanion. The model system consist of dispersed polyelectrolyte capsules in an electrolyte solution whereby two cases are considered with respect to the presence of the polyanion, either in the inner or external solution. It is assumed that the capsule wall is impermeable to polyanion, but water and all ions can freely penetrate. The model predictions are summarized by presenting the difference between the external pH, the pH of the inner solution and the osmotic pressure difference across the capsule wall, both in the dependence of sodium chloride concentration.
