Unravelling the motivational dynamics of established entrepreneurs : a systems perspective
Karin Širec, Nataša Šarlija, Katja Crnogaj, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The question of what motivates entrepreneurs to maintain and grow their ventures beyond the startup phase remains an underexplored aspect of entrepreneurship research. Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, GEM (2023), this study examines four key entrepreneurial motivations among 103 established Croatian entrepreneurs who are making a difference in the world, building great wealth or a very high income, continuing a family tradition, and earning a living. Employing a multivariate multiple regression approach, we analyze how sociodemographic factors, opportunity perception, fear of failure, media influences, and sustainability-oriented mindsets (e.g., UN SDG awareness) influence these diverse motivations. Findings reveal distinct motivational patterns: socially responsible mindsets and awareness of the SDGs primarily drive the aspiration to “make a difference”, while age, perceived opportunities, and fear of failure reinforce the pursuit of wealth. Media narratives uniquely influence the intent to “continue a family tradition”, while necessity-driven motives—linked to fear of failure and lower growth ambitions—predominate among those aiming simply to “earn a living”. By applying a systems thinking approach, this research illustrates how interdependent factors create distinct motivational clusters, and it highlights the importance of tailored policies and support programs for established entrepreneurs seeking sustainable growth. It contributes to the interdisciplinary discourse on entrepreneurship, offering insights for policymakers, educators, and advisors working to foster resilient and innovative entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Integrating playful learning to enhance education for sustainability : case study of a business school in Slovenia
Barbara Bradač Hojnik, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Business schools play a pivotal role in training future leaders equipped to tackle complex challenges in sustainable development. This study investigates the effects of integrating playful learning methodologies into sustainable entrepreneurship education, aligning with the goals of education for sustainable development and Sustainable Development Goals. The research involved a quantitative approach, utilizing pre- and post-intervention surveys targeting 50 business school students to assess changes in their knowledge of sustainable entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial skills, and engagement levels. Results from descriptive statistics and paired t-tests revealed significant enhancements; knowledge scores increased from an average of 3.01 to 3.70 (t(49) = −23.04, p < 0.001), skills scores from 3.19 to 3.90 (t(49) = −20.88, p < 0.001), and engagement scores from 3.40 to 4.00 (t(49) = −16.28, p < 0.001), indicating statistically significant improvements across all measured domains. These findings suggest that playful learning methodologies can profoundly enrich the educational experience, making it more dynamic and impactful. The study underscores the potential of such pedagogical strategies in fostering a comprehensive understanding of sustainability and cultivating essential competencies among future business leaders. This research has significant implications for curriculum design, advocating for the inclusion of interactive and experiential learning methods to improve educational outcomes and better prepare students for the complex challenges of sustainable development.

Global country classification of sustainable startups levels
Barbara Bradač Hojnik, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In today's world, the pursuit of sustainable development has become a global priority. However, the integration of sustainability practices in entrepreneurial ventures, particularly in new startups, lags behind. This article aims to bridge the gap between sustainable development and entrepreneurship by examining the role of sustainability in the formation of sustainable startups. Through the use of cluster analysis, this study classifies countries based on their environmental and social objectives in the context of sustainable startups. The analysis reveals distinct clus-ters of countries with varying degrees of emphasis on environmental and social considerations. The results of the analysis provide valuable insights into the distribution of countries across different clusters, delineating the sus-tainable goals of startups in those countries. These findings align with existing research on sustainable entrepre-neurship and contribute to the broader discourse in the field. The implications of these findings are significant for promoting sustainable entrepreneurship. While the study acknowledges several limitations, future research can expand upon these findings to develop a more comprehensive understanding of sustainable entrepreneurship on a global scale.

Evaluating progress in achieving the UN's sustainable development goals : ǂa ǂcomparative analysis
Katja Crnogaj, Maja Rožman, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study aims to explore the percei-ved progress in fulfilling the United Nations Sustaina-ble Development Goals (SDGs) at the national level. Using the data from 2022 and 2023 for 43 countri-es, sourced from the contributions of 3,690 national experts, we assess the perceived progress in areas critical to sustainable development, including social contribution, social responsibility, investor interests, economic opportunities for minority groups, envi-ronmentally conscious practices, energy efficiency, national cultural values towards sustainability, SDG-aligned business activities and government support for sustainability-focused businesses. The assessment covers twelve key aspects to determine the extent to which new and growing companies and the broader business and policy environment are aligned with the SDGs. The main objective is to identify trends, achi-evements and areas for improvement in integrating the SDGs into business operations and policy fra-meworks. Research methods include a quantitative analysis of the GEM database (Global Entrepreneur-ship Monitor, the world's foremost study of entrepre-neurship), comparative statistical analysis and trend evaluation to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress made between 2022 and 2023. This re-search is crucial to understanding the effectiveness of current strategies and identifying the need for further action to achieve the SDGs.

Entrepreneurial dynamism and sustainability : unveiling Europe’s economic growth patterns through cluster analysis
Barbara Bradač Hojnik, Karin Širec, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper highlights the complex relationship between entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and economic growth in 41 European countries, using a reliable K-Means cluster analysis. The research thoroughly evaluates three key factors: the SDG Index for sustainable development, GDP per capita for economic well-being, and the New Business Density Rate for entrepreneurial activity. Our methodology reveals three distinct narratives that embody varying degrees of economic vitality and sustainability. Cluster 1 comprises the financially stable and sustainability-oriented countries of Western and Northern Europe. Cluster 2 showcases the variegated economic and sustainability initiatives in Central and Southern Europe. Cluster 3 envelopes the economic titans with noteworthy business expansion but with the potential for better sustainable practices. The analysis reveals a favourable association between economic prosperity and sustainable development within clusters, although with nonlinear intricacies. The research concludes with a series of strategic imperatives specifically crafted for each cluster, promoting economic variation, increased sustainability, invention, and worldwide collaboration. The resulting findings highlight the crucial need for policy-making that considers the specific context and the potential for combined European resilience and sustainability.

Navigating gender nuances : assessing the impact of AI on employee engagement in Slovenian entrepreneurship
Maja Rožman, Polona Tominc, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: Our research delved into exploring various selected facets of AI-driven employee engagement, from the gender perspective, among Slovenian entrepreneurs. Methods: This research is based on a random sample of 326 large enterprises and SMEs in Slovenia, with an entrepreneur completing a questionnaire in each enterprise. Results: Findings suggest that there are no significant differences between male and female entrepreneurs in Slovenia regarding various aspects of AI-supported entrepreneurial management practice including the following: AI-supported entrepreneurial culture, AI-enhanced leadership, adopting AI to reduce employee workload, and incorporating AI tools into work processes. The widespread integration of AI into entrepreneurship marks a transition to a business landscape that values inclusivity and equity, measuring success through creativity, strategic technology deployment, and leadership qualities, rather than relying on gender-based advantages or limitations. Our research also focused on the identification of gender differences in path coefficients regarding the impact of the four previously mentioned aspects of AI on employee engagement. While both genders see the value in using AI to alleviate employee workload, the path coefficients indicate that female entrepreneurs report higher effectiveness in this area, suggesting differences in the implementation of AI-integrated strategies or tool selection. Male entrepreneurs, on the other hand, appear to integrate AI tools into their work processes more extensively, particularly in areas requiring predictive analytics and project scheduling. This suggests a more technical application of AI in their enterprises. Conclusions: These findings contribute to understanding gender-specific approaches to AI in enterprises and their subsequent effects on employee engagement.

Entrepreneurship and the education of future teachers
Jelena Stamatović, Lidija Zlatić, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Modern education needs include teachers who possess entrepreneurial competences. The subject of our study is entrepreneurship education in the field of teaching. We conducted semi-structured interviews with senior students of the Faculty of Education in Uzice (N=70). Entrepreneurship education can be realised using formal, non-formal and informal methods in higher education. The fundamentals of entrepreneurship are already represented in the existing curriculum, which cannot be deemed sufficient for systematised knowledge of entrepreneurship. Therefore, faculties of teacher education must be open to new models of activity and content organisation aimed at the development and encouragement of entrepreneurial competences among future teachers.

Social impact, innovations, and market activity of social enterprises : comparison of European countries
Barbara Bradač Hojnik, Katja Crnogaj, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The purpose of this article is to provide an insight into the specifics of social entrepreneurship in different business environments. The article, therefore, examines selected characteristics of social enterprises, namely social value, innovations, and market activities. In addition, differences in the start-up and operational phases of social enterprises were measured. Social enterprises must operate in a specific business context, which essentially hinders or promotes social entrepreneurship. As culture differs between north-western and south-eastern Europe, it is important to examine the differences in social entrepreneurship between these two groups of countries. To analyze the proposed characteristics, we used the latest data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor special report on social entrepreneurship. The results indicate that there exist differences in social impact measurement between observed groups of countries. Additionally, we confirmed differences between the observed groups of countries in terms of innovations and market activity of social enterprises in the operational phase. Our results also suggest that social entrepreneurship is more developed in north-western European countries than in south-eastern ones, with some elements in the north-western countries being more noticeable in the operational phase compared to the start-up phase.

Overview of social entrepreneurship development in Slovenia
Barbara Bradač Hojnik, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The aim of the article is to analyze public policies of social entrepreneurship in Slovenia and their developmental phases, the characteristics of social economy organizations, and to assess the framework conditions for social entrepreneurship by social enterprises. Since social entrepreneurship follows mainly social objectives, it needs the support of the ecosystem to develop properly. The EU allows the Member States to regulate social entrepreneurship itself, so Slovenia has formalized the social entrepreneurship domain through national-level legislation. In the article, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods is applied, using primary data on social enterprises and a case study approach. The results of the analysis of social economy organizations in Slovenia indicate that the formal status of social enterprises covers a wide range of organizations and their share is low in the national context. The analysis of the case study organizations indicates that the legislation is considered as the main factor hindering the development of social entrepreneurship. Moreover, their assessment of public policies is rather judgmental and disapproving. In general, the results reveal that although the area of social entrepreneurship in Slovenia is developing, a vision and long-term strategy is still lacking and the implementation of supportive environment incentives is insufficient.
