Literature in the English Classroom in the Final Three Years of Primary School : master's thesis
Zala Jug, 2025, magistrsko delo

Opis: Literature plays an essential role in language learning, since it offers students an engaging and meaningful way to develop their language skills and critical thinking. This Thesis deals with the integration of literature into English language teaching in the final three years of primary school in Slovenia. The theoretical part of the Thesis examines the fundations for integrating literature into English language teaching in Slovene primary school by examining how reading comprehension is addressed in the Curriculum for the final three years of Primary School, as well as the objectives, standards and l themes outlined in the Curriculum. It also investigates the role that literature plays in learning a foreign language, focusing not only on its role in developing students' language skills but also on its importance for rasing students' sociocultural awareness. The empirical part is divided into two parts: the first one analyses literary texts that are included in the English textbooks currently used in the final three years of primary school to assess their frequency and their pedagogical role. Based on the findings, the second part proposes a list of additional literary texts suitable to be used in the English classroom for their alignment with the Curriculum's objectives, as well as for addressing socially relevant themes that reflect contemporary social issues.

Slovenian EFL-students' familiarity with the English sentence structure and their ability to identify its element : master's thesis
Jan Dukarič, 2025, magistrsko delo

Opis: This master’s thesis explores the expanding discrepancy and subsequent outcomes between prevailing pedagogical approaches and the realities of conventional assessment practices, where a fundamental understanding of a syntactic organisation is a prerequisite for engagement. Thus, the thesis aims to examine Slovene EFL primary school students’ familiarity with the English sentence structure and its elements guided by the assumptions addressing the syntactic influence of students’ L1, their limited syntactic competence, and their explicit awareness of English sentence structure and its constituent parts. Adopting a mixed methods research design and grounded in a comprehensive theoretical framework, the empirical study involved of 75 participants aged between 11 and 14 years (±1 year), which were in turn tasked with completing a grammar awareness task, language function task, word order task, and a sentence structure in translation task. The findings ultimately indicate students’ shortcomings in the identification of core sentence elements, the emergence of explicit syntactic knowledge, and a salient reliance on Slovene syntactic frameworks.

AI is here to stay : an empirical study of attitudes among teachers of English and German
Saša Jazbec, Bernarda Leva, Marta Licardo, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a disruptor increasingly impacting foreign language learning and teaching. This paper explores the theoretical framework of AI, its application in foreign language teaching, and the question of whether AI is displacing foreign language teachers. The empirical part presents findings from a survey of English and German teachers (n = 112) in Slovenian primary and secondary schools regarding their views on AI in foreign language teaching. Statistical analysis reveals a constructively critical attitude towards AI among teachers, acknowledging its presence in and influence on teaching strategies, methods, and teacher roles but not perceiving it as a fundamental threat. Furthermore, statistical tests and correlations indicate no significant differences in attitude towards AI in the classroom based on whether they are English or German teachers or whether they work in primary or secondary schools. V empiričnem delu predstavljamo izsledke raziskave, v kateri so svoja stališča o UI pri pouku tujega jezika izrazili učitelji in učiteljice angleščine in nemščine (n = 112) v osnovnih in srednjih šolah v Sloveniji.

Games and songs in early English and German language learning in kindergarten : a comparison of practitioners' perspectives
Julija Tertinek, 2025, magistrsko delo

Opis: This master’s thesis analyses early foreign language learning, specifically the learning of English and German, in Slovenian kindergartens, with a particular emphasis on the implementation of games and songs in language instruction. The primary aim of this thesis is to investigate teachers’ attitudes and experiences regarding early foreign language teaching in practice. As such, the research focuses on several key areas: teaching methods, the availability and use of teaching materials and the prevalence of songs and games during lessons. The theoretical part provides an overview of early foreign language learning, including the benefits of early exposure, the influence of age, teaching approaches and strategies, teacher competences and the role of materials, games and songs in early foreign language acquisition. It also examines the Slovenian context, addressing how early language learning is regulated and supported by the National Preschool Curriculum and the availability of formal training for teachers. The empirical part combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. The qualitative method includes six semi-structured interviews with teachers/preschool teachers of English and German from Maribor and the surrounding area. The quantitative method includes a questionnaire, distributed to kindergartens across various regions of Slovenia and completed by 64 respondents. Together, these approaches complement the theoretical framework and provide valuable insight from practitioners into how foreign languages are taught in practice and aid in identifying areas where improvements could be made.

The impact of TikTok on learning English in Slovene primary schools : students' perceptions in the third triennium
Urška Škrabl, 2024, magistrsko delo

Opis: Exposure to mass media in today’s world is metaphorically starting to equal the process of breathing air; scrolling through social media has become a part of everyday routine, and students use their smartphones for lengthy durations and for a variety of chores that stem from responsibilities as well as from their hobbies. The aim of this master's thesis is to offer an insight into the possibility of integrating TikTok and English language education, as perceived by Slovene students in the third triennium of primary school. We employed a questionnaire to explore the opinions of students (grades 7 – 9) in the Podravje region. The results revealed that students are loyal users of the app, on which they encounter English content to a greater extent and share a good understanding of the language. They recognize TikTok’s potential for improving different language skills (predominantly speaking), and are familiar with English teaching channels on the app. The results portray a moderate preference for using TikTok in the ELT classroom, mostly due to inexperience and linking social media solely to leisure time. Teachers should at least consider incorporating TikTok in accordance with their students’ needs and preferences or share advice on finding valuable resources on the platform.

Environmental Content in Intermediate English Textbooks and Lessons : master's thesis
Saška Kurnik, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: Environmental issues are nowadays an inevitable part of our lives. It is imperative we address them in order to prevent their further escalation and ensure a better future on our planet. English language teachers have a unique opportunity to touch upon this topic in their lessons since English, as a global language, is a means for discussing all globally relevant issues. This thesis focuses on the representation of environmental issues in intermediate English textbooks and lessons. We aim to highlight the significance of environmental issues and encourage teachers to promote environmental awareness and action in their students. We first provide theoretical background about environmental education, environmental issues, the connection between language teaching and the environment, as well as the inclusion of environmental content in English textbooks. In the empirical part of the thesis, we analyse 13 intermediate English textbooks in terms of environmental content and present interviews with five high-school English teachers about the extent to which environmental issues are integrated into their lessons.

The Influence of English on the Language of Croatian Influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok Social Media : master's thesis
Ena Cilar, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: The rapid spread of the English language, which is frequently referred to as a lingua franca, has had a significant impact on other languages and the peculiar language of computer-mediated communication. What is more, the Internet, social media and digital influencers are the key agents of both language change and changes in the modern society. Due to the globally growing popularity of social media influencers, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which their language use is affected by the globality of English, with a focus on Croatian influencers. Therefore, data for this paper are drawn from altogether 270 social media posts published by the eight most successful Croatian influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The research methods include linguistic, thematic and content analysis. The results reveal that the use of ‘ad hoc loanwords’ and intra-sentential code-switching are more common among Croatian influencers in comparison with outdated Anglicisms and inter-sentential code-switching. While the most frequently used loanwords among Croatian influencers belong to the categories of cyberculture and popular culture, the use of loanwords belonging to particular semantic fields is not strongly related to their thematic content categories. The importance and originality of this thesis are that it is the first study to provide new insights into the language use of Croatian influencers in relation with English as a global and leading online language. However, due to practical constraints, it is limited in terms of the research sample size and generalizability, which offers implications for further research.
