The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is one of the most successful members at the University of Maribor and is recognised for its excellence in education, research and collaboration with industry. Its history of development, from its early beginnings in 1959 to becoming an internationally active and research-driven institution, reflects a continuous commitment to technological progress and societal impact. The Special Issue presents a selection of articles covering applied fluid mechanics, advanced materials and metamaterials, manufacturing science, and biomedical modelling. The collected works combine experimental, numerical, and review-based approaches to address contemporary challenges in mechanical engineering. 2. A novel data-driven surrogate approach for fast evaluation of the dynamics of soft ellipsoidal micro-particles in dilute viscous flowJana Wedel, Ivan Dominik Horvat, Nejc Vovk, Matjaž Hriberšek, Jure Ravnik, Paul Steinmann, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: We present a novel data-driven surrogate approach for fast evaluation of the deformation dynamics of soft particles, both initially spherical and ellipsoidal, suspended in external flows, specifically predicting the hydrodynamic tractions on the particle surface. The core of the approach relies on expressing the required force dyad as a linear combination of velocity gradient components, modulated by form coefficients. These coefficients scale shear, rotational, and extensional flow contributions to the velocity gradient. Two training strategies are proposed: one utilizing analytical data, which enables a computational speedup, and another based on data obtained with 3D direct numerical simulations (DNS) using the boundary element method (BEM), with the latter demonstrating the feasibility of this approach even in the absence of analytical solutions. Validation against established literature benchmarks confirms the model’s accuracy in three scenarios: (i) ellipsoidal particles in the quasi-rigid limit in pipe flow, (ii) initially spherical particles in shear flow, and (iii) initially ellipsoidal particles in shear flow. In all cases, the data-driven surrogate approach achieves excellent agreement with reference results. This work establishes a foundation for extending our data-driven approach to flow-induced deformations of soft particles of more complex particle shapes, such as superellipsoids and other non-ellipsoidal geometries, where no analytical traction expression is available. 3. Quantum-classical correspondence between quantum chaos and finite-time classical dynamicsQian Wang, Marko Robnik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Although the importance of quantum-classical correspondence has been recognized in numerous studies of quantum chaos, its usefulness in understanding quantum chaos through finite-time classical dynamics remains less well understood.We address this question in this work by performing a detailed analysis of how the quantum chaotic measure relates to the chaoticity of the finite-time classical trajectories. A good correspondence between them has been revealed in time- dependent and many-body systems, both of them being of the mixed type. In particular, we show that the dependence of the quantum chaotic measure on the chaoticity of finite-time trajectories can be well captured by a function that is independent of the system. This strongly implies the universal validity of the finite-time quantum-classical correspondence. Our findings enhance the understanding of quantum-classical correspondence and provide a promising approach to explore the ergodic hierarchy in quantum systems. 5. Oblačne rešitve ERP: študija primera malih podjetijNika Kampuš, 2025, diplomsko delo Opis: V diplomski nalogi smo obravnavali oblačne rešitve ERP na primeru dveh rešitev – Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central in Odoo – z vidika njihove uporabe v malih slovenskih podjetjih. Rešitve ERP omogočajo povezovanje poslovnih funkcij v enoten sistem, oblačne različice pa prinašajo dodatne prednosti, kot so nižji stroški, hitrejša uvedba, enostavno vzdrževanje in dostopnost kjerkoli in kadarkoli.
V teoretičnem delu smo predstavili značilnosti računalništva v oblaku in rešitev ERP, v empiričnem pa primerjalno analizirali Odoo in Business Central glede funkcionalnosti, arhitekture, možnosti integracije ter primernosti za mala podjetja. Ugotovili smo, da je Business Central posebej primeren za podjetja, ki že delujejo znotraj Microsoftovega ekosistema, medtem ko Odoo izstopa po svoji prilagodljivosti, odprtokodnosti in modularnem pristopu.
Študiji primera podjetij IC Elektronika in Valens potrjujeta, da ERP v oblaku pomembno prispeva k večji preglednosti, avtomatizaciji ter splošni učinkovitosti poslovanja. Obe rešitvi sta primerni za mala podjetja, končna izbira pa je odvisna od specifičnih poslovnih potreb, proračuna ter razpoložljivih tehničnih znanj v podjetju. 6. Oblačne CRM rešitveJon Cesar, 2025, diplomsko delo Opis: Diplomska naloga obravnava oblačne CRM rešitve kot ključno orodje za digitalno transformacijo podjetij. Predstavljeni so temeljni koncepti računalništva v oblaku, storitveni in namestitveni modeli (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), ter prednosti in slabosti uporabe takšnih rešitev. Poseben poudarek je namenjen primerjavi dveh vodilnih oblačnih CRM sistemov – Salesforce in Microsoft Dynamics 365 – z vidika funkcionalnosti, cene, uporabniške izkušnje, mobilne dostopnosti in vključenosti umetne inteligence. Ugotovitve kažejo, da ima vsaka rešitev svoje prednosti glede na potrebe podjetij različnih velikosti in tehnološke usmerjenosti. 8. Unveiling polyphenol-protein interactions : a comprehensive computational analysisSamo Lešnik, Marko Jukič, Urban Bren, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Our study investigates polyphenol-protein interactions, analyzing their structural diversity and dynamic behavior. Analysis of the entire Protein Data Bank reveals diverse polyphenolic structures, engaging in various noncovalent interactions with proteins. Interactions observed across crystal structures among diverse polyphenolic classes reveal similarities, underscoring consistent patterns across a spectrum of structural motifs. On the other hand, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of polyphenol-protein complexes unveil dynamic binding patterns, highlighting the influx of water molecules into the binding site and underscoring limitations of static crystal structures. Water-mediated interactions emerge as crucial in polyphenol-protein binding, leading to variable binding patterns observed in MD simulations. Comparison of high- and low-resolution crystal structures as starting points for MD simulations demonstrates their robustness, exhibiting consistent dynamics regardless of the quality of the initial structural data. Additionally, the impact of glycosylation on polyphenol binding is explored, revealing its role in modulating interactions with proteins. In contrast to synthetic drugs, polyphenol binding seems to exhibit heightened flexibility, driven by dynamic water-mediated interactions, which may also facilitate their promiscuous binding. Comprehensive dynamic studies are, therefore essential to understand polyphenol-protein recognition mechanisms. Overall, our study provides novel insights into polyphenol-protein interactions, informing future research for harnessing polyphenolic therapeutic potential through rational drug design. 9. Synchronization stability in simplicial complexes of near-identical systemsFatemeh Parastesh, Mahtab Mehrabbeik, Karthikeyan Rajagopal, Sajad Jafari, Matjaž Perc, Charo I. del Genio, Stefano Boccaletti, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Assessing the stability of synchronization is a fundamental task when studying networks of dynamical systems. However, this becomes challenging when the coupled systems are not exactly identical, as is al ways the case in practical settings. Here we introduce an extension of the Master Stability Function to determine near-synchronization stability within simplicial complexes of nearly identical systems coupled by synchronization-noninvasive functions. We validate our method on a simplicial complex of Lorenz oscillators, f inding a good correspondence between the predicted regions of stability and those observed via direct simula tion. This confirms the correctness of our approach, making it a valuable tool for the evaluation of real-world systems, in which differences between the constitutive elements are unavoidable. 10. Vključevanje umetne inteligence v CRM rešitveTadeja Vogrinčič, 2025, magistrsko delo Opis: V današnjem času vse večjega tehnološkega napredka postaja umetna inteligenca vse bolj priljubljena komponenta poslovnih modelov. V magistrskem delu smo obravnavali povezovanje umetne inteligence v CRM rešitve. Ugotavljali smo, kakšen vpliv imajo pametne rešitve, povezane z umetno inteligenco na odnose s strankami in samo poslovanje. V teoretičnem delu so predstavljene CRM rešitve-kot orodja in tehnologije, ki izboljšajo in upravljajo z odnosi s strankami. Umetna inteligenca pa je opredeljena kot področje računalniške znanosti, ki se osredotoča na razvoj inteligentnih strojev, ki bodo sposobni sprejemanja racionalnih odločitev in razmišljanja po človeškem vzgledu. Predstavljena je njuna integracija, delovanje in prednosti, ki jih ta povezava prinaša na poslovanje podjetij. V empiričnem delu smo izvedli primerjalno analizo treh ponudnikov rešitev CRM, ki imajo vključeno umetno inteligenco - Salesforce, Hubspot in Microsoft Dynamics 365. Rešitve smo podrobneje primerjali glede na njihove funkcionalnosti, ceno, možnosti integracije z ostalimi aplikacijami, proces implementacije, načine poročanja in kako je v rešitvi uporabljena umetna inteligenca. Povzeli smo rezultate primerjalne analize in pripravili napotke za izbiro prave CRM rešitve glede na velikost podjetja. V zadnjem poglavju smo se dotaknili še posebej pomembne tematike varstva podatkov in etičnih vprašanj, ki se porajajo z vedno hitrejšim razvojem umetne inteligence.
