The impact of cross-border tourism in Ulcinj : a study of tourism development between Montenegro and Albania : a study of tourism development between Montenegro and Albania
Ajla Bajramspahić, 2025, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: This thesis investigates how Ulcinj's growth within the Montenegro–Albania corridor is influenced by cross-border tourism. First, a theoretical analysis demonstrated the connections between demand for tourism, employment, and investment; the significance of cooperation and governance; the interdependence of tourism and mobility; and the consequences of seasonality and sustainability. Next, we interviewed emergency services, public administration, local politicians, and business sector stakeholders in lodging and hospitality. The results show distinct advantages for turnover, employment, and small-scale investment, but they also show enduring drawbacks, such as poor public transportation and car-free accessibility, border lines and procedural unpredictability, disjointed governance, irregular electronic payments and taxi rates, noticeable summer peaks, and peak-season strain on municipal services. Targeted last-mile infrastructure improvements planned off-season events, operational mayor/DMO collaboration, direct cross-border public transportation links with basic one-stop/digital facilitation, and harmonized coastal standards were all recommendations made by interviewees. In order to establish a more stable, higher-value, year-round destination system, the thesis concludes by highlighting the necessity of strengthening operational environmental management, integrating mobility and border facilitation, improving governance coordination, and packaging and jointly marketing cross-border products.

Environmental pollution and economic activity : estimating the environmental Kuznets curve for a panel of countries worldwide
Darja Boršič, Petar Todorčević, Nejc Fir, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: This paper aims to assess the impact of certain economic factors on pollution for selected 112 countries worldwide. Due to data availability, carbon dioxide emissions in tonnes per capita were chosen as the dependent variable measuring pollution. Based on panel data and generalized moments method, the relationship between economic activity and environmental pollution was estimated. The results show that in the whole sample, as well as for two subsamples of developed and undeveloped countries, carbon dioxide emissions are statistically significantly affected by gross domestic product per capita, energy intensity and renewable energy consumption. The linear effect of economic activity positively effects the pollution, while the quadratic relationship is negative. Thus, the validity of inverted-U curve of the environmental Kuznets curve has been demonstrated. The estimated effect of economic activity measured by gross domestic product per capita on pollution does not differ in developed and undeveloped countries.

Interdisciplinary approach in primary education : animated films as a tool for cross-cultural awareness
Loreta Huber, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: The paper presents results from a study exploring the effectiveness of animated films in primary education for enhancing cross-cultural awareness. The study examined how animated films can broaden young learners’ perspectives on diverse cultural practices, values, and traditions, and identified factors that affect information processing in complex, cross-cultural contexts. Using triangulation, data were gathered and analysed from twenty primary students (ages 8-11). The study employed Tobii Pro Glasses 3 for eye-tracking, supplemented by a questionnaire to support the eye-tracking findings. Analysis revealed that integrating culture-specific concepts from animated films can effectively enhance cross-cultural awareness in interdisciplinary education.

Slovenian EFL-students' familiarity with the English sentence structure and their ability to identify its element : master's thesis
Jan Dukarič, 2025, master's thesis

Abstract: This master’s thesis explores the expanding discrepancy and subsequent outcomes between prevailing pedagogical approaches and the realities of conventional assessment practices, where a fundamental understanding of a syntactic organisation is a prerequisite for engagement. Thus, the thesis aims to examine Slovene EFL primary school students’ familiarity with the English sentence structure and its elements guided by the assumptions addressing the syntactic influence of students’ L1, their limited syntactic competence, and their explicit awareness of English sentence structure and its constituent parts. Adopting a mixed methods research design and grounded in a comprehensive theoretical framework, the empirical study involved of 75 participants aged between 11 and 14 years (±1 year), which were in turn tasked with completing a grammar awareness task, language function task, word order task, and a sentence structure in translation task. The findings ultimately indicate students’ shortcomings in the identification of core sentence elements, the emergence of explicit syntactic knowledge, and a salient reliance on Slovene syntactic frameworks.

The International Work Addiction Scale (IWAS) : a screening tool for clinical and organizational applications validated in 85 cultures from six continents
Edyta Charzyńska, Nejc Plohl, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Background and aims: Despite the last decade’s significant development in the scientific study of work addiction/workaholism, this area of research is still facing a fundamental challenge, namely the need for a valid and reliable measurement tool that shows cross-cultural invariance and, as such, allows for worldwide studies on this phenomenon. Methods: An initial 16-item questionnaire, developed within an addiction framework, was administered alongside job stress, job satisfaction, and self-esteem measures in a total sample of 31,352 employees from six continents and 85 cultures (63.5% females, mean age of 39.24 years). Results: Based on theoretical premises and psychometric testing, the International Work Addiction Scale (IWAS) was developed as a short measure representing essential features of work addiction. The seven-item version (IWAS-7), covering all seven components of work addiction, showed partial scalar invariance across 81 cultures, while the five-item version (IWAS-5) showed it across all 85 cultures. Higher levels of work addiction on both versions were associated with higher job stress, lower job satisfaction, and lower self-esteem across cultures. The optimal cut-offs for the IWAS-7 (24 points) and IWAS-5 (18 points) were established with an overall accuracy of 96% for both versions. Discussion and conclusions: The IWAS is a valid, reliable, and short screening scale that can be used in different cultures and languages, providing comparative and generalizable results. The scale can be used globally in clinical and organizational settings, with the IWAS-5 being recommended for most practical and clinical situations. This is the first study to provide data supporting the hypothesis that work addiction is a universal phenomenon worldwide.

Tax implications for students freelancers working abroad : a comparative analysis of Slovenia, Austria and Croatia
Vito Bobek, Samanta Arbajter, Tatjana Horvat, Martina Kovačič, 2025, review article

Abstract: This study examines the tax obligations and compliance challenges faced by Slovenian students working abroad, specifically focusing on freelancers and employed students within the distinct regulatory frameworks of Croatia and Austria. An empirical survey of 298 students reveals moderate awareness of cross-border tax obligations, with significant gaps in understanding and utilizing tax reliefs, mainly double taxation treaties. Inferential statistical methods identify critical relationships between awareness levels and the likelihood of claiming tax relief. The study highlights the complexities of tax compliance and administrative burdens that often deter students from engaging in freelance work abroad. The study recommends targeted measures to improve tax education for student freelancers, including the development of accessible resources and workshops. It highlights the need to enhance support systems through streamlined tax compliance processes and subsidized access to professional advice. Policy proposals emphasize simplifying cross-border tax regulations and strengthening international cooperation to address the specific challenges faced by student freelancers in Croatia and Austria. Future research directions are also suggested further to explore the impact of tax policies on cross-border freelancing.

Cross-cultural data on romantic love and mate preferences from 117,293 participants across 175 countries
Marta Kowal, Tina Kavčič, Maja Zupančič, Nejc Plohl, Bojan Musil, 2025, other scientific articles

Abstract: Psychological studies on close relationships have often overlooked cultural diversity, dynamic processes, and potentially universal principles that shape intimate partnerships. To address the limited generalizability of previous research and advance our understanding of romantic love experiences, mate preferences, and physical attractiveness, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural survey study on these topics. A total of 404 researchers collected data in 45 languages from April to August 2021, involving 117,293 participants from 175 countries. Aside from standard demographic questions, the survey included valuable information on variables relevant to romantic relationships: intimate, passionate, and committed love within romantic relationships, physical-attractiveness enhancing behaviors, gender equality endorsement, collectivistic attitudes, personal history of pathogenic diseases, relationship quality, jealousy, personal involvement in sexual and/or emotional infidelity, relational mobility, mate preferences, and acceptance of sugar relationships. The resulting dataset provides a rich resource for investigating patterns within, and associations across, a broad range of variables relevant to romantic relationships, with extensive opportunities to analyze individual experiences worldwide.

Effects of parenting styles on academic achievement : the moderating role of a country’s economic development
Tina Cupar, Rudi Klanjšek, Katja Košir, Miran Lavrič, Alexander T. Vazsonyi, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Although numerous studies have examined the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement in different socio-cultural contexts, the moderating role of specific macro contextual characteristics remains understudied. This cross-national study examined the effects of three parenting styles on two aspects of academic achievement (self-reported average grade and educational attainment) in a sample of adolescents and young adults from ten Southeast European countries (N = 10,909) and tested whether the associations were moderated by economic development as an indicator of socio-cultural context. Results indicated that country-level authoritative parenting style was positively associated with both academic outcomes, while authoritarian and permissive parenting styles were negatively associated (authoritarian with both outcomes, permissive only with educational attainment). Furthermore, the country’s higher economic development increased the positive impact by authoritative parenting and decreased the negative impact by authoritarian parenting style on educational attainment. Study results provide evidence of the importance of contextual characteristics in which parenting takes place, especially for adolescents’ and young adults’ long-term educational outcomes. The results are dis cussed in terms of importance of general value orientations and life goals for the varying effects of parenting styles on educational attainment.

Analysing the EU data privacy implications resulting from Executive Order 14086 : a legal perspective
Zoran Dimović, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: The exchange of personal data between the EU and the USA has sparked intense debates and contentious discussions. This heightened attention can be attributed to significant disparities in data privacy regulations between the two regions, as well as mounting concerns surrounding the potential misuse of personal information by U.S. companies and government entities. In response to these concerns, the EU implemented the GDPR in 2018, which introduced stringent regulations aimed at safeguarding data privacy. Additionally, the GDPR imposed restrictions on the transfer of personal data to countries outside the EU that lack comparable data protection measures. One of the prominent legal challenges in this context relates to concerns over the adequacy of data protection in the USA, particularly in light of U.S. surveillance programs and the potential for government access to personal data.

Amir Begić, Jasna Šulentić Begić, Ivan Vodopić, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: Music lessons provide many opportunities for cross-curricular connections with other subjects. As part of the work, research was conducted on a sample of 110 teachers who teach Music Culture in elementary school. The aim of the research was to find out the teachers' views on the implementation of cross-curricular connections between the teaching of Music Culture and other subjects, the frequency and methods of conducting such teaching, as well as possible statistically significant differences between teachers in the attitudes and implementation of cross-curricular connections with regard to sociodemographic variables. We believe that the results of this research indicate the need for more intensive implementation of cross-curricular connections between the teaching of Music Culture and other subjects.
