The Influence of English on the Language of Croatian Influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok Social Media : master's thesis

Opis: The rapid spread of the English language, which is frequently referred to as a lingua franca, has had a significant impact on other languages and the peculiar language of computer-mediated communication. What is more, the Internet, social media and digital influencers are the key agents of both language change and changes in the modern society. Due to the globally growing popularity of social media influencers, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which their language use is affected by the globality of English, with a focus on Croatian influencers. Therefore, data for this paper are drawn from altogether 270 social media posts published by the eight most successful Croatian influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The research methods include linguistic, thematic and content analysis. The results reveal that the use of ‘ad hoc loanwords’ and intra-sentential code-switching are more common among Croatian influencers in comparison with outdated Anglicisms and inter-sentential code-switching. While the most frequently used loanwords among Croatian influencers belong to the categories of cyberculture and popular culture, the use of loanwords belonging to particular semantic fields is not strongly related to their thematic content categories. The importance and originality of this thesis are that it is the first study to provide new insights into the language use of Croatian influencers in relation with English as a global and leading online language. However, due to practical constraints, it is limited in terms of the research sample size and generalizability, which offers implications for further research.

High strain-rate deformation analysis of open-cell aluminium foam

Opis: This study investigated the high-strain rate mechanical properties of open-cell aluminium foam M-pore®. While previous research has examined the response of this type of foam under quasi-static and transitional dynamic loading conditions, there is a lack of knowledge about its behaviour under higher strain rates (transitional and shock loading regimes). To address this gap in understanding, cylindrical open-cell foam specimens were tested using a modified Direct Impact Hopkinson Bar (DIHB) apparatus over a wide range of strain rates, up to 93 m/s. The results showed a strong dependency of the foam's behaviour on the loading rate, with increased plateau stress and changes in deformation front formation and propagation at higher strain rates. The internal structure of the specimens was examined using X-ray micro-computed tomography (mCT). The mCT images were used to build simplified 3D numerical models of analysed aluminium foam specimens that were used in computational simulations of their behaviour under all experimentally tested loading regimes using LS-DYNA software. The overall agreement between the experimental and computational results was good enough to validate the built numerical models capable of correctly simulating the mechanical response of analysed aluminium foam at different loading rates.

Reflection symmetry detection in earth observation data

Opis: The paper presents a new algorithm for reflection symmetry detection, which is specialized to detect maximal symmetric patterns in an Earth observation (EO) dataset. First, we stress the particularities that make symmetry detection in EO data different from detection in other geometric sets. The EO data acquisition cannot provide exact pairs of symmetric elements and, therefore, the approximate symmetry must be addressed, which is accomplished by voxelization. Besides this, the EO data symmetric patterns in the top view usually contain the most useful information for further processing and, thus, it suffices to detect symmetries with vertical symmetry planes. The algorithm first extracts the so-called interesting voxels and then finds symmetric pairs of line segments, separately for each horizontal voxel slice. The results with the same symmetry plane are then merged, first in individual slices and then through all the slices. The detected maximal symmetric patterns represent the so-called partial symmetries, which can be further processed to identify global and local symmetries. LiDAR datasets of six urban and natural attractions in Slovenia of different scales and in different voxel resolutions were analyzed in this paper, demonstrating high detection speed and quality of solutions.

The surgical treatment of osteoarthritis

Opis: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the whole joint with the underlying bone, representing a major source of pain, disability, and socioeconomic cost worldwide. Age is considered the strongest risk factor, albeit abnormal biomechanics, morphology, congenital abnormality, deformity, malalignment, limb-length discrepancy, lifestyle, and injury may further increase the risk of the development and progression of osteoarthritis as well. Pain and loss of function are the main clinical features that lead to treatment. Although early manifestations of osteoarthritis are amenable to lifestyle modification, adequate pain management, and physical therapy, disease advancement frequently requires surgical treatment. The symptomatic progression of osteoarthritis with radiographical confirmation can be addressed either with arthroscopic interventions, (joint) preservation techniques, or bone fusion procedures, whereas (joint) replacement is preferentially reserved for severe and end-stage disease. The surgical treatment aims at alleviating pain and disability while restoring native biomechanics. Miscellaneous surgical techniques for addressing osteoarthritis exist. Advanced computer-integrated surgical concepts allow for patient personalization and optimization of surgical treatment. The scope of this article is to present an overview of the fundamentals of conventional surgical treatment options for osteoarthritis of the human skeleton, with emphasis on arthroscopy, preservation, arthrodesis, and replacement. Contemporary computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery concepts are further elucidated.

Neuropilin (NRPs) related pathological conditions and their modulators

Opis: Neuropilin 1 (NRP1) represents one of the two homologous neuropilins (NRP, splice variants of neuropilin 2 are the other) found in all vertebrates. It forms a transmembrane glycoprotein distributed in many human body tissues as a (co)receptor for a variety of different ligands. In addition to its physiological role, it is also associated with various pathological conditions. Recently, NRP1 has been discovered as a coreceptor for the SARS-CoV-2 viral entry, along with ACE2, and has thus become one of the COVID-19 research foci. However, in addition to COVID-19, the current review also summarises its other pathological roles and its involvement in clinical diseases like cancer and neuropathic pain. We also discuss the diversity of native NRP ligands and perform a joint analysis. Last but not least, we review the therapeutic roles of NRP1 and introduce a series of NRP1 modulators, which are typical peptidomimetics or other small molecule antagonists, to provide the medicinal chemistry community with a state-of-the-art overview of neuropilin modulator design and NRP1 druggability assessment.

Product assembly assistance system based on pick-to-light and computer vision technology

Opis: Product assembly is often one of the last steps in the production process. Product assembly is often carried out by workers (assemblers) rather than robots, as it is generally challenging to adapt automation to any product. When assembling complex products, it can take a long time before the assembler masters all the steps and can assemble the product independently. Training time has no added value; therefore, it should be reduced as much as possible. This paper presents a custom-developed system that enables the guided assembly of complex and diverse products using modern technologies. The system is based on pick-to-light (PTL) modules, used primarily in logistics as an additional aid in the order picking process, and Computer Vision technology. The designed system includes a personal computer (PC), several custom-developed PTL modules and a USB camera. The PC with a touchscreen visualizes the assembly process and allows the assembler to interact with the system. The developed PC application guides the operator through the assembly process by showing all the necessary assembly steps and parts. Two-step verification is used to ensure that the correct part is picked out of the bin, first by checking that the correct pushbutton on the PTL module has been pressed and second by using a camera with a Computer Vision algorithm. The paper is supported by a use case demonstrating that the proposed system reduces the assembly time of the used product. The presented solution is scalable and flexible as it can be easily adapted to show the assembly steps of another product.

Signing blockchain transactions using qualified certificates

Opis: Blockchain technology is increasingly being considered among both private enterprises and public services. However, it poses a challenge with regard to aligning its identity management scheme with the Public Key Infrastructure and the Qualified Digital Certificates issued by Qualified Trust Service Providers. To solve this challenge, we will present a solution in the form of an architecture reference model, which enables enterprises and public services to leverage blockchain technology by integrating Qualified Electronic Signatures with blockchain transactions. The evaluation of the architecture reference model is provided through the design of a Blockchain-based Trusted Public Service and a use-case scenario example. The proposed architecture reference model is based on the CEF building blocks EBSI, eSignature, and eID compliant with eIDAS

Digitalized storytelling : the case of Neuromancer

Opis: This paper compars two media capable of transferring the ideas of the author to the audience. First is the traditional media for storytelling - a printed book; and the second is the digital media for which the author presents a case that it is a storytelling media that allows for a new and different was of presenting a story - a computer game. With provided history of computer game development and a direct comparison of Gibson's novel Neuromancer and its conversion into a graphical adventure computer game, the author of the paper presents the different possibilities and limitations of each medium.

Opis: The 7th Student Computer Science Research Conference is an answer to the fact that modern PhD and already Master level Computer Science programs foster early research activity among the students. The prime goal of the conference is to become a place for students to present their research work and hence further encourage students for an early research. Besides the conference also wants to establish an environment where students from different institutions meet, let know each other, exchange the ideas, and nonetheless make friends and research colleagues. At last but not least, the conference is also meant to be meeting place for students with senior researchers from institutions others than their own.

Perception of cyber crime in Slovenia

Opis: Purpose: The purpose of this article is to present the results of the pilot research regarding the perception of cybercrime in Slovenia. Design/Methods/Approach: The study focused on the research of the perception of cybercrime among the general public, as well as the members of the law enforcement agencies. Findings: The development of information and communication technologies critically influences all aspects of our lives, and consequently the characteristics of crime have adapted to the new form of operation in the virtual world. Cybercrime is the new way of breaking the law, and in order to implement successful preventive strategies it is of crucial importance to understand the perception of the general public, as well as the perception of the members of law enforcement agencies regarding cybercrime. The pilot study was performed on a smaller group of individuals (approximately half were the representatives of the general public, while the rest were the representatives of law enforcement agencies) in the form of in-depth interviews. The findings of the pilot research were alarming, since the majority of the interviewees greatly differentiate between certain forms of crime performed in the cyberspace as opposed to the same form of crime performed in real life i.e. the act of stealing, piracy in particular, is unacceptable in the real world and at the same time only natural in the virtual world. Furthermore, the pilot research displayed serious lack of awareness regarding different forms of cybercrime among the general public, as well as the members of law enforcement agencies, and consequently also poor understanding of legislation pertinent to cybercrime. Based on the results of the pilot research it is evident that it is of crucial importance to raise the awareness and understanding among the general public and increase the knowledge of the members of law enforcement agencies regarding cybercrime and its consequences in our everyday life. Research limitations/implications: The results are not generalizable due to the small group of interviewees. Consequently, future research will include a larger group of interviewees and will combine both in-depth interviews as well as questionnaires. Practical implications: The article represents a useful source of information for individuals working in this field as well as the general public. Furthermore, it represents the basis for further research of the field. Originality/Value: The article deals with the issue of the perception of cybercrime in Slovenia and exposes the critical issues related to the difference in the perception of a similar act of crime in the real life as opposed to the virtual world.
