The role of computerized laboratory exercises in development of key competences
Andrej Šorgo, Vida Lang, 2023, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: Over the past 20 years, the first author and numerous collaborators have attempted to introduce computer-based laboratory exercises in science, particularly in biology classes. While working with secondary and post-secondary students, it was realised that it was possible to simultaneously develop cross-cutting competencies that bridged several key competences of the European framework of eight key competences for lifelong learning. These were (a) Collecting, analysing, and organising information; (b) Communication of ideas; (c) Planning and organising activities; (d) Working with others in teams; (e) The use of mathematical ideas and techniques; (f) Problem solving; and (g) The use of technology. When inquiry and problem-solving strategies are used, student achievement is much higher compared to explanatory and expository labs.

Abstracts of the 10th Student Computing Research Symposium (SCORES’24)
2024, zbornik

Opis: The 2024 Student Computing Research Symposium (SCORES 2024), organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Maribor (UM FERI) in collaboration with the University of Ljubljana and the University of Primorska, showcases innovative student research in computer science. This year’s symposium highlights advancements in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning algorithms, computational problem-solving, and healthcare data analysis. The primary goal of SCORES 2024 is to provide a platform for students to present their research, fostering early engagement in academic inquiry. Beyond research presentations, the symposium seeks to create an environment where students from different institutions can meet, exchange ideas, and build lasting connections. It aims to cultivate friendships and future research collaborations among emerging scholars. Additionally, the conference offers an opportunity for students to interact with senior researchers from institutions beyond their own, promoting mentorship and broader academic networking.

Statistically significant features improve binary and multiple motor imagery task predictions from EEGs
Murside Degirmenci, Yilmaz Kemal Yuce, Matjaž Perc, Yalcin Isler, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In recent studies, in the field of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), researchers have focused on Motor Imagery tasks. Motor Imagery-based electroencephalogram (EEG) signals provide the interaction and communication between the paralyzed patients and the outside world for moving and controlling external devices such as wheelchair and moving cursors. However, current approaches in the Motor Imagery-BCI system design require.

The comparison of the speed of solving chemistry calculation tasks in the traditional way and with the use of ICT
Brina Dojer, Matjaž Kristl, Andrej Šorgo, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Efficiency of time use is a key factor in chemistry calculation tasks, affecting both, personal and professional domains. This study is dedicated to finding the fastest methods for accomplishing chemistry tasks. Our investigation delves into the comparative temporal outlays made by students as they engage three different approaches: using an electronic calculator, a basic calculator app on a smartphone, and a desktop computer calculator. As part of our research, we examine a cohort of 52 Slovenian university students, preservice teachers who were actively enrolled in chemistry and related science programs, spanning the academic years of 2019 and 2022. The results from 2019 show that students can solve the chemistry tasks most quickly using electronic calculator and take the most time to calculate the tasks using smartphones (Δmean = 133 s; ΔSD = 5 s; Δmin = 97 s; Δmax = 131 s). An even larger difference is observed from the 2022 study year (Δmean = 189 s; ΔSD = 129 s; Δmin = 170 s; Δmax = 625 s). In summary, although smartphones are recognised as a multitasking device, replacing traditional single-purpose devices, they have not been able to outperform them.

Mechanical behaviour of photopolymer cell-size graded triply periodic minimal surface structures at different deformation rates
Yunus Emre Yilmaz, Nejc Novak, Oraib Al-Ketan, Hacer Irem Erten, Ulas Yaman, Anja Mauko, Matej Borovinšek, Miran Ulbin, Matej Vesenjak, Zoran Ren, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study investigates how varying cell size affects the mechanical behaviour of photopolymer Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS) under different deformation rates. Diamond, Gyroid, and Primitive TPMS structures with spatially graded cell sizes were tested. Quasi-static experiments measured boundary forces, representing material behaviour, inertia, and deformation mechanisms. Separate studies explored the base material’s behaviour and its response to strain rate, revealing a strength increase with rising strain rate. Ten compression tests identified a critical strain rate of 0.7 s−1 for “Grey Pro” material, indicating a shift in failure susceptibility. X-ray tomography, camera recording, and image correlation techniques observed cell connectivity and non-uniform deformation in TPMS structures. Regions exceeding the critical rate fractured earlier. In Primitive structures, stiffness differences caused collapse after densification of smaller cells at lower rates. The study found increasing collapse initiation stress, plateau stress, densification strain, and specific energy absorption with higher deformation rates below the critical rate for all TPMS structures. However, cell-size graded Primitive structures showed a significant reduction in plateau and specific energy absorption at a 500 mm/min rate.

A new transformation technique for reducing information entropy : a case study on greyscale raster images
Borut Žalik, Damjan Strnad, David Podgorelec, Ivana Kolingerová, Luka Lukač, Niko Lukač, Simon Kolmanič, Krista Rizman Žalik, Štefan Kohek, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper proposes a new string transformation technique called Move with Interleaving (MwI). Four possible ways of rearranging 2D raster images into 1D sequences of values are applied, including scan-line, left-right, strip-based, and Hilbert arrangements. Experiments on 32 benchmark greyscale raster images of various resolutions demonstrated that the proposed transformation reduces information entropy to a similar extent as the combination of the Burrows–Wheeler transform followed by the Move-To-Front or the Inversion Frequencies. The proposed transformation MwI yields the best result among all the considered transformations when the Hilbert arrangement is applied.
