An experimental investigation of BPMN-based corporate communications modeling

Opis: Purpose Despite corporate communications having an immense impact on corporate success, there is a lack of dedicated techniques for their management and visualization. A potential strategy is to apply business process management (BPM) approach with business process model and notation (BPMN) modeling techniques. Design/methodology/approach The goal of this study was to gain empirical insights into the cognitive effectiveness of BPMN-based corporate communications modeling. To this end, experimental research was performed in which subjects tested two modeling notations – standardized BPMN conversation diagrams and a BPMN extension with corporate communications-specific concepts. Findings Standard conversation diagrams were demonstrated to be more time-efficient for designing and interpreting diagrams. However, the subjects made significantly fewer mistakes when interpreting the diagrams modeled in the BPMN extension. Subjects also evolved positive perceptions toward the proposed extension. Practical implications BPMN-based corporate communications modeling may be applied to organizations to depict how formal communications are or should be performed consistently, effectively and transparently by following and integrating with BPM approaches and modeling techniques. Originality/value The paper provides empirical insights into the cognitive effectiveness of corporate communications modeling based on BPMN and positions the corresponding models into typical process architecture.

Analysis by team – a tool for mitigating mistakes in intelligence analysis

Opis: Purpose: In this paper, we will examine various causes of error in intelligence analysis and then propose a solution to combat or mitigate them. Design/Methods/Approach: We reviewed the literature of relevant primary and secondary sources on mistakes in intelligence analysis and efforts to mitigate them. Additionally, we use the synthesis method to propose a solution. Findings: Analysis by team was recognized as a valuable tool in mitigating mistakes in intelligence analysis. Intelligence analysis is a cognitively intense activity, subjected to cognitive biases and analytical mistakes. Mistakes and biases can be further exacerbated by the pressures on intelligence analysts stemming from uncertainty, denial and deceptions, secrecy and the need for timeliness. Because of these limitations and challenges, individuals often struggle to recognize their own mistakes, but are still able to identify them in other people. As a solution to this, analysis by team is proposed. However, working in groups can lead to risks such as groupthink and polarization. For that reason, analytical groups have to be properly selected, structured and managed. Research Limitations/Implications: Besides the secret nature and, therefore, limited access to information, there is also limited empirical research on the efficacy of the methods and techniques used by intelligence analysts. Practical Implications: In the paper, we present a practical solution for mitigating mistakes by intelligence analysis, which can be used by professionals from other fields of national security as well as in the business environment. Originality/Value: This paper seeks to present the most viable tool to combat or mitigate mistakes in analytical or investigative work. Analytical findings and conclusions are meant for national security and law enforcement professionals and decision makers. More effective and rigorous analysis can therefore support better decision making.

Pupillometric parameters of alertness during unpredictable but not predictable smooth pursuit neck torsion test are altered in patients with neck pain disorders: a cross-sectional study

Opis: Despite commonly investigated predictable smooth-pursuit neck-torsion tasks (SPNT) in neck pain patients, unpredictable conditions have been seldom investigated but are indicative of preserved oculomotor functions during neck torsion. Although not previously studied, some speculations about compensatory cognitive mechanisms such as increased phasic alertness during unpredictable tasks were suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate eye movement accuracy and pupillometric responses during predictable and unpredictable SPNT test in neck pain patients and asymptomatic controls. Eye movements (gain and SPNT-difference) and pupillometry indicative of tonic (average and relative pupil diameter) and phasic (index of cognitive activity-ICA) alertness were measured in 28 idiopathic neck pain patients and 30 asymptomatic individuals using infrared video-oculography during predictable and unpredictable SPNT test. Gain in unpredictable SPNT test was lower as compared to predictable tasks and presented with similar levels in neutral and neck torsion positions, but not in the predictable SPNT test. ICA was lower during neutral position in all tasks in patients as compared to control group but increased during neck torsion positions in unpredictable tasks. Relative pupil diameters presented with no differences between the groups or neck positions, but the opposite was observed for average pupil diameter. Higher ICA indicates an increase in phasic alertness in neck pain patients despite no alterations in oculomotor control during SPNT test. This is the first study to indicate cognitive deficits in oculomotor task in neck pain patients. The latter could negatively affect other tasks where additional cognitive resources must be involved.

Merjenje učinkovitosti kognitivnega treninga z EEG metodami : magistrsko delo

Opis: Kognitivni trening se v zadnjih letih vedno pogosteje omenja kot ena izmed intervencij za izboljšanje kognitivnih sposobnosti, vendar njegovi učinki na možgansko strukturo in funkcijo še niso popolnoma raziskani. Magistrsko delo je sistematični pregled literature, kjer se je preverjalo merjenje učinkovitosti kognitivnega treninga z EEG metodami. Kot instrumenti za raziskavo so bile uporabljene strokovne akademske znanstvene študije, ki so na voljo v elektronskih podatkovnih bazah Cobiss, EMERALD, PubMed, ProQuest in IOS Press. V vzorec so bili vključeni le recenzirani strokovni in akademski članki, ki so sovpadali s sledečimi vključitvenimi kriteriji; ključne iskalne besedne zveze: »cognitive training«, »eeg«, »electroencephalography« in v slovenskem jeziku: »kognitivni trening«, »eeg«, »elektroencefalografija«. Omejitveni kriteriji so bili: obdobje od leta 2010 do 2021, jezik slovenščina in angleščina. V pregled je bilo vključenih 24 raziskav s skupno 1159 udeleženci, starimi od 4,8 do 78,9 let, zdrave in kognitivno oškodovane populacije ter zelo heterogeni metodološki pristopi. Večina študij poroča o spremembah v nevrofizioloških parametrih, katerih glavno gonilo je kognitivni trening. Poročanja o bližnjem transferju so vzpodbudna, vendar so za trdne dokaze potrebne dodatne študije. Magistrsko delo definira relevantne študije ter predstavlja dodano vrednost glede na kvaliteto, z uporabo znanstvene metodologije združuje in evalvira njihove rezultate.

Data-driven supply chain operations : the pilot case of postal logistics and the cross-border optimization potential

Opis: According to the defined challenge of cross-border delivery, a pilot experiment based on the integration of new digital technologies to assess process optimization potential in the postal sector was designed. The specifics were investigated with events processing based on digital representation. Different events were simulated with scenario analysis with the integration of the Cognitive Advisor and supported by the monitoring of KPIs. The business environment is forcing logistics companies to optimize their delivery processes, integrate new technologies, improve their performance metrics, and move towards Logistics 4.0. Their main goals are to simultaneously reduce costs, environmental impact, delivery times, and route length, as well as to increase customer satisfaction. This pilot experiment demonstrates the integration of new digital technologies for process optimization in real time to manage intraday changes. Postal operators can increase flexibility, introduce new services, improve utilization by up to 50%, and reduce costs and route length by 12.21%. The Cognitive Advisor has shown great potential for the future of logistics by enabling a dynamic approach to managing supply chain disruptions using sophisticated data analytics for process optimization based on the existing delivery infrastructure and improving business processes. Research originality is identified with a novel approach of real-time simulation based on the integration of the Cognitive Advisor in postal delivery.

Improving comprehension of process diagrams with Graphical highlights

Opis: The main purpose of business process diagrams is to facilitate the communication between the process-related stakeholders, which directly affects the decision-making. For this reason, they must be easy to understand. However, this is often challenging to achieve, since business process diagrams can become large and complex. This, in turn, can negatively affect their correctness and understandability. The goal of this doctoral thesis was to propose and investigate an approach that makes business process diagrams appear less complex, without changing the corresponding diagrammatic notation or the business process diagrams themselves. This was done by manipulating the opacity of graphical elements in order to emphasize the important parts of a business process diagram by lowlighting the irrelevant ones. The proposed solution, named Emphasis, implemented with opacity-based Graphical Highlight pattern, abbreviated as simply Graphical highlights, was subsequently applied to sample business process diagram, modeled in Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN). The analysis demonstrated that the structural complexity of the business process diagrams decreased when the proposed solution was applied. Afterwards, a Web application prototype was implemented, which supports the proposed set of Graphical highlights. Furthermore, we empirically validated whether Graphical highlights positively impact cognitive effectiveness of business process diagrams, and if the users will find the prototype implementation useful. To this end, an experimental research, which included 85 participants, was conducted. The participants were randomly assigned in either the treatment group (Graphical highlights diagram representation approach), or the control group (conventional diagram representation approach). In accordance with the definition of cognitive effectiveness, speed, ease, and accuracy of answering 26 comprehension questions were observed, along with the perceived usefulness of the prototype. The results of the analysis demonstrated that participants who used Graphical highlights significantly outperformed those that used the conventional approach in all experiment's observations. We can conclude that using Graphical highlights increases the cognitive effectiveness of business process diagrams, while the corresponding prototype implementation is perceived as being useful.

Perceived factors and obstacles to cognitive schema change during economic crisis

Opis: The main objective is to present the perceived factors in cognitive schema change as experienced by participants from two Slovenian sectors and to compare them with factors from schema change theory in order to evaluate specific circumstances and obstacles to effective cognitive schema change. 31 interviews with participants from six companies were conducted twice during the 2008 economic crisis. The prevalent perceived antecedents of schema change lie within an organisation and in the business environment. Stimulating factors are also economic and financial crises and personal characteristics. The prevalent obstacles to schema change, as perceived by participants, are stability of current cognitive schemas, personal characteristics of management, and rigidity.

Spatial ability, 3D modelling and styles of thinking in relation to brain hemisphere dominance

Opis: The progress of neuroscience and the understanding of children's styles of thinking are opening up new teaching styles that take into account differences in individual cognitive perception. Students can be classified into three distinctive perceptive types, according to the pronounced activity of one cerebral hemisphere in their thinking and information processing: left-hemisphere, right-hemisphere, and integrative type that does not exhibit a considerable dominance of one particular hemisphere. The purpose of the research was to establish differences in the 3D modeling encouraged progression of spatial ability between the left-hemisphere, right-hemisphere and integrative types of students. Computerized 3D modeling employed during technical extra-curricular activity in lower secondary school (grades 6 to 9) may affect the spatial ability of students, which according to other studies, appears to be predominantly connected with the right brain hemisphere. Research was conducted among a variety of lower secondary school students across Slovenia aged 11 15 years. Data on spatial ability and its development was collected using a hybrid spatial intelligence test conducted on two separate occasions, while assessment of the learning perception type of students depending on hemispheric dominance was obtained using a self-evaluation questionnaire. The 3D modeling of technical objects and objects drawn in orthographic or isometric projection was done with the software Trimble SketchUp.

Neuroscience, world wide web and reading curriculum

Opis: Neuroscience has proved a malleable nature of our brain. The way of thinking is changing lifelong and not only in early childhood. New media as television, video games, and the Internet change students' cognitive skills. New visual-spatial skills, such as iconic representation and spatial visualization are developed. But parallel to these changes new weaknesses occur. Those are in higher-order cognitive processes, as abstract vocabulary, mindfulness, reflection, inductive problem solving, critical thinking, and imagination (Greefield, 2009). Those are the reasons why reading curriculum in contemporary educational system should focus on two groups of aims: deep online reading and linear literature reading. By deep reading is meant the sophisticated processes that propel comprehension and that include inferential and deductive reasoning, analogical skills, critical analysis, reflection, and insight. By linear literature reading is meant primarily reading of fiction, which develops the imagination, inductive analysis, critical and abstract thinking.
