LEARNING AND USING FOREIGN LANGUAGES AT A DIDACTIC FARM

Opis: Learning and using foreign languages in a natural environment, in real-life situations at the didactic farm (at the Eder farm) is the theme of this diploma thesis. Nowadays primary schools are more and more aware of teaching different real-life skills outside the school’s own four walls. They do not expect their pupils to learn just for good grades, they want them to learn and prepare for possible situations in their future life. The first part of the thesis presents the history of teaching and learning outside the classroom, defines the meaning of the term "didactic farm" and presents the Eder didactic farm, its history, ethnological collection, offers, target groups, possible types of visits and topics. On the basis of four possible foreign language courses during the visits to the didactic farm the results, advantages and disadvantages of teaching foreign language at the didactic farm, responses of children, teachers’ opinions and possibilities of further developments are presented. The hypotheses have all been confirmed, with the remark, that the children have fewer difficulties coping with new ways of FL learning and using then teachers. The primary aim of the thesis was to find possible improvements for the integration of didactic farms and schools in the local or wider school district. Another goal was to invite them to learn and use foreign languages at a didactic farm that provides appropriate offers, attractive and diverse themes and contributes to the greater prevalence of such foreign language learning in natural environment.

The development of four-year-old child's competences with the help of information-communication technology

Opis: Nowadays it is very difficult to avoid the information-communication technology. It is present everywhere: in the business world, civil services, education, at home. The ability to search, choose and use relevant data and information among endless choices, offered by the modern technology, is also seen as a key competence. This article presents the influence which the ICT has on the development of four-year-old children's competences. The present issue is a part of an extensive study which also deals with children's access to the ICT and its usage at home. The data was gathered with the help of 130 parents, who filled out a questionnaire and provided us with their opinions about their children's usage of the ICT at home. We discovered that the ICT influences the development of certain competences to some extent. We also tried to see if there are any differences based on the child's gender and parents' level of education.

Construction of the Scale of child's attachment to his/her kindergarten teacher (CAKT)

Opis: In the theoretical part of this paper, the author gives answers to the question of whether a real attachment relationship can exist between a child and a non-maternal caretaker. She mentions the established methods of measuring the child's attachment to the kindergarten teacher. She presents The scale of child's attachment to his/her kindergarten teacher (CAKT), which is based on authors previous findings and the experience of other authors in the forming of psychological instruments of this type. The scale was tested in a research which involved twenty-five kindergarten teachers who participated in the evaluation of 178 children (49.4% boys). Children ranged in age from 3 to 6 years. The purpose of the study was to investigate the dimensionality and internal consistency of the Scale. It was established that the psychometric characteristics of the Scale were adequate. This paper also presents the limitations of the research, which should be considered in the interpretation of the obtained results. Replication studies using clinical groups and samples from different cultures will be needed to assess a possible generalization of the presented results.

Autistic spectrum disorders and creativity

Opis: The purpose of this paper is to outline the findings of a pilot study, which compares drawings of typically developed preschool children and children with autistic spectrum disorders in the same age. In the study the Goodenough-Harris Drawing Test (GHDT) (1926; 1963) was used. In this study, the auto-portraits of children from two groups were analyzed concerning such categories as line, size, colour, details. For this the statistical analysis of variance was used. The results of the study show that there are no statistically significant differences in the drawings of studied groups according to the categories line, size, colour, details.

Clinical utility of serodiagnostic testing in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease

Opis: Background: Among children and adolescents, the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often missed or delayed because of the nonspecific nature of the clinical symptoms. In such instances noninvasive and accurate diagnostic tests that would accurately distinguish IBD from functional disorders would be most valuable to clinicians. Several serological markers have been used as non-invasive diagnostic tools in IBD pediatric patients. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence and diagnostic accuracy of perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCA), anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA), anti-exocrine pancreatic antibodies (PAB) and anti-goblet cells antibodies (GAB) alone and in combination in children and adolescents with IBD. Patients and methods: Serum specimens were analyzed for p-ANCA, ASCA IgG, ASCA IgA, PAB and GAB antibodies in 49 children and adolescents with confirmed IBD and 53 non-IBD controls. P-ANCA, PAB and GAB antibodies were determined by indirect immunofluorescent test and ASCA by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All patients with Crohn's disease (CD) had genotyping performed using a sequence specific PCR directed against the wild type and the three principal mutations of NOD2/CARD15 gene. Disease location, body mass index (BMI) and disease activity by pediatric Crohn's disease activity index (PCDAI) at the time of diagnosis were determined in CD patients. Results: The prevalence of p-ANCA in patients with UC and ASCA in CD patients was high (82.3 % and 67.9 %, respectively). Positivity for PAB antibodies in CD and GAB in UC was lower (35.7 % and 23.5 %, respectively). Accuracy data (sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, respectively) for differentiating IBD from non-IBD controls were as follows: p-ANCA: 82 %, 100 %, 100 %, 94 %; ASCA IgG: 68 %, 94 %, 86 %, 84 %; ASCA IgA: 54 %, 100 %, 100 %, 80 %; PAB: 36 %, 98 %, 91 %, 74 %; GAB: 23 %, 100 %, 100 %, 80 %. In distinguishing CD from UC we found out the following accuracy data (sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, respectively): p-ANCA: 82 %, 82 %, 74 %, 88 %; ASCA IgG: 68 %, 100 %, 100 %, 65 %; ASCA IgA: 54 %, 100 %, 100 %, 57 %; PAB: 36 %, 100 %, 100 %, 49 %; GAB: 23 %, 100 %, 100 %, 68 %. There were no significant association between ASCA positivity and the three major mutations of NOD2/CARD15 gene, disesase location and family history in CD patients, however an association between BMI and disease activity at the time of diagnosis was found out. Conclusions: Specificity and positive predictive value of serological markers p-ANCA, ASCA IgG, ASCA IgA, PAB and GAB for IBD alone and in combination are high and which make them useful in diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease in day-to-day clinical practice, particulary in making decision about performing invasive diagnostic procedures. Because of low sensitivity they are less useful as screening tests for inflammatory bowel disease in pediatric population.

Feminist Research about the Orphan Motif in Children's Literature in 19th Century

Opis: The purpose of my diploma thesis is to critically analyse feminism and aspects of feminism in different literary sources. The focus of this paper will be on two works by Frances Hodgson Burnett (A Little Princess and The Secret Garden) and on Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. I will provide a short description of life in England and in the United States of America in the 19th century and explain the concept of an orphan. The thesis will also include entries from the journals and letters by young orphans, conveying their life stories. Special attention is paid to the definition of feminism and feminist theories from the perspectives of these two particular authors. All three novels could raise the question of female identity. The concept of woman has always been regarded as inferior to that of man regardless of the area. The main character's increasing wish of being free, accepted and loved is one of the main topics in the works at hand. Ultimately, each heroine's story showcases her power and dignity, not only as a woman, but as an independent person in a harsh world.

The challenge of translating children's literature

Opis: In the article the author focuses on Vladimir Nabokov's translation of Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, made in 1923. The main intention of the article is to analyze Nabokov's translation strategies of domestication, realized in the text as substitution and localization, and to explain possible reasons for his decision in favour of almost complete Russification of the original. It is possible that Nabokov considered children's attitude towards the final result as the most important part of the translation process. Thus, he used domesticated strategies to transfer for Russian children the humour, the originality and brightness of the paradoxical and attractive world of Lewis Carroll, his sense of the absurd and his amazing gift for games of logic and language, providing a recognizable and familiar atmosphere for the readers. Undoubtedly, his young Russian readers were able to identity themselves with the story and to comprehend the complex world created by Lewis Carroll. On the other hand, Nabokov refuses to oversimplify his translation or to patronize its young audience through simplistic translation solutions.

The function of language in characterization

Opis: The article discusses the use of language varieties by the main character in the animated film Chicken Little in English and Slovene. Both versions of the film are dubbed by professional actors and are aimed at a young target audience, children. The main intention of the article is to analyze the characteristics of Chicken Little’s speech in both languages, to compare the differences in the use of language varieties, and to evaluate the consequences of shifts in language use on the character and the story in the target language. The analysis is based on a transcript of the speech and enables comparison on four different levels: phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary. The main focus is on the analysis of speech in the target language: Maribor regional colloquial language, with influence from the dialectal speech of Ruše. The main conditions influencing the use of certain language varieties are taken into consideration: the characteristics of the dubbing process, specifics of the target audience, and prevailing norms related to the use of language on television.

Biomechanical characteristics of skeletal muscles and associations between running speed and contraction time in 8- to 13-year-old children

Opis: Objective: To investigate associations between running speeds and contraction times in 8- to 13-year-old children. Method: This longitudinal study analyzed tensiomyographic measurements of vastus lateralis and biceps femoris muscles’ contraction times and maximum running speeds in 107 children (53 boys, 54 girls). Data were evaluated using multiple correspondence analysis. Results: A gender difference existed between the vastus lateralis contraction times and running speeds. The running speed was less dependent on vastus lateralis contraction times in boys than in girls. Analysis of biceps femoris contraction times and running speeds revealed that running speeds of boys were much more structurally associated with contraction times than those of girls, for whom the association seemed chaotic. Conclusion: Joint category plots showed that contraction times of biceps femoris were associated much more closely with running speed than those of the vastus lateralis muscle. These results provide insight into a new dimension of children’s development.

Aerobic games and playful exercises in 9-year-old boys

Opis: Previous research on exercise for pre-adolescents with the purpose of improving aerobic fitness levels has yielded contradictory results. Sufficient training intensity, frequency and duration are the crucial factors in achieving this goal; the question, however, is whether it is possible to reach sufficient intensity levels using aerobic games and playful exercises. Variety and fun are the important factors in motivating children to participate in physical exercises and sports. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the effect of high intensity exercises in pre-adolescent boys, using programs consisting of fun activities and aerobic games. The findings show that the participants achieved intensity levels above 80 % of HRpeak on average in about 60 % of the total exercise time, resulting in significantly improved aerobic fitness.
