Safeguarding the child's best interests in judicial proceedings through digital technology
Katja Drnovšek, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Although appearing in court can cause significant psychological distress to children, especially when involved in criminal proceedings or family disputes, their participation in judicial proceedings is sometimes unavoidable. While children's procedural rights are rarely the main issue in proceedings before the ECtHR, its case law has nonetheless established certain standards concerning the need for child-friendly approaches. However, safeguarding children's rights to effective participation and to be heard while simultaneously protecting them from secondary victimisation remains challenging. With the development of technology and the digitalisation of judicial systems, new approaches and opportunities continue to emerge. Remote hearings and various digital tools hold great potential to make judicial proceedings less intimidating and traumatic when implemented with proper safeguards. The paper analyses relevant ECtHR case law, the psychological aspects of remote hearings, and some examples of Slovenian good practices concerning using digital tools in judicial proceedings involving children.

Children's Rights in the Sustainable and Digital Environments : Exploring Opportunities and Challenges: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges
2025, zbornik

Opis: The scientific monograph ‘Children's Rights in the Sustainable and Digital Environments: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges’ addresses current and carefully selected topics in the field of children's rights. It specifically focuses on issues where the authors critically analyze and discuss the protection of children's rights in the context of sustainable development and digital transformation, as well as the challenges posed by both environments. The contributors engage in critical discourse and offer in-depth analyses of children's rights from both substantive and procedural legal perspectives, examining developments at the national level as well as within the international legal framework. They clearly identify inconsistencies, shortcomings, and difficulties that children's rights face in the context of sustainability and digitalization. In their contributions, the authors emphasize the importance of safeguarding children's rights in judicial proceedings and highlight the role and responsibilities of both national and international actors in this field. They further discuss selected aspects of children's vulnerability and violations of their rights, especially in relation to children affected by armed conflict, those living in crisis regions, and children with disabilities, web.

Sleep and emotional functioning in premature children : a systematic literature review
Annemarie Kim Kozole Smid, Vita Štukovnik, Karin Bakračevič, 2025, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Sleep, as the predominant behavioral state in newborns, especially in preterm infants, represents a key component for development. It is suggested that preterm children exhibit greater sleep difficulties compared to full-term children, as well as a disproportionately higher prevalence of emotional deficits. Due to the limited research on sleep and emotional functioning in the population of preterm children, particularly their in terconnections, the primary aim of this systematic literature review was to explore existing scientific research on sleep and emotional functioning in preterm children, with particular focus on emotional regulation. Additionally, we aimed to examine potential links between these two constructs in this population. As a secondary objective, the review also considered studies addressing any interventions related to sleep or emotional functioning in preterm children. The results of the systematic literature review did not allow for definite conclusions regarding sleep in preterm compared to full-term children from a qualitative perspective. On the other hand, an increased presence of emotional and behavioral difficulties in this population was clearly identified. An effective inter vention for regulating emotions and sleep was found to be the kangaroo care, as well when combined with music intervention. Breastfeeding also demonstrated positive effects on behavioral and emotional functioning. There appears to be a tendency for sleep problems to manifest more noticeably in late compared to early childhood. This finding highlighted the importance of long-term monitoring of this population through later childhood, adolescence, and even adulthood to better understand the long-term consequences of preterm birth on sleep and emotional functioning. Further research is essential for developing interventions that could mitigate or prevent long-term negative effects on sleep and emotional well-being associated with preterm birth.

Children as witnesses in court proceedings
Katja Drnovšek, Tinka Berk, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: When children are confronted with the judicial system, they are particularly vulnerable to stressful and complex situations. Complying with international standards promoting child-friendly justice is crucial for preventing negative impacts on their development. The Slovenian legal system has implemented several measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of child victims and witnesses in criminal proceedings, such as excluding minors from direct confrontation with the accused, utilising videoconferencing for testimony, and establishing child-friendly spaces. The model of "Barnahus" or "Children’s House" has been adopted as well, emphasising a multidisciplinary approach to addressing child victims of sexual abuse and other crimes. The Supreme Court has actively pursued child-friendly justice, producing informative booklets to guide child witnesses through legal processes. These and other initiatives underscore Slovenia's commitment to balancing the rights of the accused with the protection and support of child victims in the criminal justice system while leaving room for further development.

Elimination of child marriage as one of the measures to achieve the sustainable development goals by 2030
Urška Soršak Leljak, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Children are one of the most vulnerable groups of people due to their young age and immaturity, and as such they receive special protection in all areas. This is reflected in the extensive legal protection provided in several international instruments and national laws. One of the indicators that countries and international organizations are taking steps to protect them is also the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was launched in 2015 by the Member States of the United Nations out of the multiannual »let's change the world« vision. It sets out 17 goals and actions to improve the world, with children as an important target group. A key action in the light of child protection is the elimination of harmful practices, covered by the Gender Equality Goal, which, among other things, aims to eradicate all harmful practices by 2030, such as child marriage, which have a strong impact on children, (mostly) girls, as they affect several aspects of the lives of »child brides« and could help achieve several Sustainable Development Goals.

Motor efficiency in relation to body weight status and gender in preschool children
Miran Muhič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Deficits in motor skills and function are associated with overweight and obesity in children. This study aimed to investigate the development of motor efficiency in 3-4-year-old children over seven months and to identify possible gender and body weight status differences in motor efficiency. In the study, there were 45 children (21 girls, 24 boys), the mean age of whom was 39 months. Analysis of the results of testing for differences in motor efficiency according to body weight status and movement components showed no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) between healthy weight and overweight children.

Recommendation systems, parents, and preschool children : the story behind digital technology
Lorena Mihelač, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: A survey was conducted in November 2023, involving 554 Slovenian parents and their preschool-aged children. The survey aimed to investigate the following: (i) the way parents and their preschool-aged children employ social media and digital technology; (ii) the parents’ comprehension of the term “information bubbles”, and (iii) the parents’ awareness of recommendation systems. Parental and child digital technology patterns and behaviours are correlated, according to the findings. The results suggest that most parents have a restricted understanding of the operational mechanisms of recommendation systems and how they contribute to the construction of “information bubbles.”

Impediments to kindergarten children identifying geometric shapes
Marija Vorkapić, Jasmina Milinković, Mila Milošević, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Research shows that children aged 3 to 6 years do not fully grasp the concept of geometric shapes. This paper aims to examine children’s intuitive knowledge of triangles and squares. We analysed the effects of distractors on identification and the neglected properties of (non)examples. The purpose of the study was to establish the developmental path in the identification of shapes. It was operationalized by determining types of interfering distractors in shape recognition and properties neglected. The data obtained from individual interviews were processed by the method of statistical and descriptive qualitative analysis. A classification was made of distractors and properties of non-examples affecting identification.
