7. Gender Stereotypes in Children's Literature: A Comparative Analysis of the Most Borrowed and Best-Selling Children's Picture BooksJasmina Dragojlović, 2021, magistrsko delo Opis: Picture books are among the first media where children learn about the world around and inside them. It is thus important that what is presented to them be accurate and cause no harm. However, that is exactly what is happening – children are exposed to certain stereotypes that do not hold true for the men and women, who are attributed these gender stereotypes. When children are taught that men are strong and women are weak, they grow up thinking in that way, which causes even further stereotyping and prejudice to occur. In this thesis, I consider why it is important to expose children to diverse plots and characters which differ from stereotypes of female caretakers, mothers, and teachers, and strong, male money-makers. It is not only female characters that are painted negatively, but also the male characters who are sometimes painted as absent fathers. This thesis offers an empirical approach through descriptive analysis and feature coding, supported by a theoretical background. It is imperative to call attention to work that is not appropriate for our siblings, children and students. It is our responsibility to provide them with good quality literature that paints the world as it should be – egalitarian—or at least, as it currently is. 8. Management of children and adolescents with coeliac disease in selected Central European countriesPetra Rižnik, 2021, doktorska disertacija Opis: Coeliac disease (CD) is a lifelong systemic autoimmune disorder elicited by gluten and related prolamines in genetically susceptible individuals and is one of the most common chronic diseases, affecting about 1% of the population. It has a very diverse clinical presentation, involving intestinal, extraintestinal and even asymptomatic presentations. Due to its genetic background, CD is more common among family members of affected individuals and is associated with a number of other conditions. The diagnosis of CD is traditionally based on the presence of a specific immune response and characteristic histological changes in the small intestinal mucosa. In the recently published European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) guidelines, the initial diagnostic step is determination of CD-specific IgA autoantibodies against type-2 (tissue) transglutaminase. Positive autoantibodies imply a high probability of mucosal atrophy. To confirm the diagnosis, an upper endoscopy with multiple duodenal biopsies should be performed. However, ESPGHAN guidelines for the past eight years allow paediatric gastroenterologists to diagnose the disease without intestinal biopsy when certain criteria are met. The only available treatment for CD is a lifelong strict gluten-free diet, which should only be initiated after firm confirmation of the diagnosis. Patients have to avoid all gluten-containing products, including products from wheat and wheat cultivars, rye, barley, Khorasan wheat, triticale and bulgur. Owing to the high likelihood of cross-contamination, avoidance of oats is also recommended in many regions.
Despite being one of the most common lifelong disorders, CD still remains undiagnosed for a long time in many adult and paediatric patients. Diagnostic delays in some regions exceed 10 years, which can have important adverse effects on patients’ health and quality of life.
The aims of our study were to analyse the clinical presentation of CD in children and adolescents in selected Central European (CE) countries, to evaluate the compliance with current ESPGHAN guidelines for diagnosing CD in children and adolescents, to assess the diagnostic delays in children and adolescents with CD in selected CE countries, to identify possible regional differences, and to determine whether the clinical presentation or the diagnostic approach influence diagnostic delays.
The study was carried out as a part of the Focus IN CD project with twelve project partners from five CE countries (Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Slovenia). Paediatric gastroenterologists from the included regions were encouraged by the regional project partners to complete a web-based questionnaire, providing anonymised medical records of children and adolescents below 19 years of age who were diagnosed with CD in 2016. The questionnaire was translated into the languages of all project partners and focused on the onset of the CD-related symptoms, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and the results of all performed tests. The medical records of children and adolescents were then analysed, and the results compared regionally.
We found that a non-classical clinical presentation and asymptomatic disease are becoming more common, and the classical clinical presentation with malabsorption syndrome less frequent in children and adolescents with CD. Abdominal pain was found to be the most common leading symptom in children older than three years, whereas, in very young children ( Ključne besede: coeliac disease, children, adolescents, Central Europe, clinical presentation, management, diagnostic delays Objavljeno v DKUM: 18.03.2021; Ogledov: 799; Prenosov: 71

9. Victim-offender mediation and observance of procedural rights in the Macedonian juvenile justice system : competitive or balancing?Stojanka Mirčeva, Vesna Stefanovska, Bogdancho Gogov, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Purpose:
The paper examines the observance of procedural rights of the parties referred to Victim-Offender Mediation (VOM) in the Justice System for Children (JSC), and particularly pioneering practice associated with challenges pertaining to the multicultural character of the community.
Design/Methods/Approach:
Analysis is based on qualitative data collected by using in-depth interviews and document analysis. Sources of data were relevant stakeholders in the referral procedure, the Child and the Victim, as well as court/prosecutors files. In-depth interviews were carried out with 17 stakeholders to capture professional attitudes, attached meanings and experience of the respondents in relation to VOM. Document analysis as a data collection technique was applied to two prosecutor’s files and one court file which, at present, are the only cases of VOM in JSC.
Findings:
The main findings pertain to the indispensable recognition that meanings attributed to VOM in JSC, as well as expectations, vary extensively among respondents. In turn, this situation shapes the procedural rights of the parties in 3 VOM cases. In addition, basic principles of VOM are implemented in line with the perceived significance of procedural rights in VOM cases.
Research Limitations / Implications:
The findings relate only to respondents’ attitudes and views on VOM as well as data contained in court/prosecutor’s files. In-depth knowledge on the implementation of procedural rights during VOM process is missing due to the impossibility for participatory observation of the joint meetings.
Originality/Value:
While across Europe much research on balancing VOM principles and fair trial standards has been conducted, no research at all has been carried out in Macedonia in relation to VOM in JSC. This small scale survey is particularly valuable in filling up the existing empirical gap, and findings might be used as a basis for developing system prerequisites for VOM. 10. The COMPRAM methodology and comlpex societal problems : an analysis of the case of children born in the warIngvill Mochmann, Dorien DeTombe, 2010, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: During and after wars children are born where the father is a member of an occupation or peacekeeping force and the mother a local citizen. Securing the human rights of children born of war is often highly complex and involves researchers and practitioners from different disciplines. The Compram methodology on handling complex societal problems will be applied to analyse whether the methodology is suitable on this group of war-affected children. The Compram methodology is a multi disciplined, multi level, multi actor methodology based on the theory of societal complexity. The methodology gives guidelines to handle real life complex societal problems.
