SINDROM ADRENALNE IZGORELOSTI PEDAGOŠKIH STROKOVNIH DELAVCEV

Opis: POVZETEK Izgorelost grozi vsakem poklicu, predvsem poklicem, povezanim z delom, kot so pomoč ljudem, delo v stiku z ljudmi, torej sem sodi tudi poučevanje. Pomembno je razlikovati pojem sindrom izgorelosti in sam proces izgorevanja s simptomi, stanje adrenalne izgorelosti, kot zadnjo stopnjo procesa izgorelosti od depresije in delovne oz. poklicne izčrpanosti s kroničnim stresom. Adrenalna izgorelost je kompleksnejša od kroničnega stresa na delovnem mestu ali od občutka frustriranosti, zajema inter- in intrapersonalne vidike. O izgorelosti in izgorevanju govorimo, ko nas naše notranje prisile ženejo v deloholizem in nato v preizčrpavanje (Pšeničny, 2008). V prvem teoretičnem delu predstavljamo pojem, različne razlage ter sam proces izgorevanja, temeljiteje predvsem zadnjo stopnjo izgorevanja, adrenalno izgorelost: stanje pred, sam akutni adrenalni zlom in stanje po zlomu. Predstavljamo vzroke (oblikovanje labilne, storilnostno pogojene samopodobe v razvoju predšolskega otroka vse bolj ambicioznih staršev in zahtev družbe ter nerecipročnost odnosov, ki se ujema z izhodiščem recipročnega modela izgorelosti), simptome (depresivni občutki in anksiozni simptomi, deloholizem in wornout, disfunkcija HHA-osi, storilnostno pogojena samopodoba), značilnosti (prepoznavne znake) in posledice sindroma adrenalne izgorelosti. Podrobneje smo se ustavili pri simptomih, predvsem zaradi napačnih predstav in sklepanj o samem sindromu. Kakšno je dejansko stanje adrenalne izgorelosti pedagoških delavcev/lavk, smo preverili med samimi učitelji/cami in vzgojitelji/cami s pomočjo anketnega vprašalnika, na osnovi katerega so učitelji/ce in vzgojitelji/ce ocenili stopnjo lastnega stresa (kroničnega stresa), osebnega zadovoljstva in samoučinkovitosti v izvajanju pedagoškega dela, kot tudi pogostost lastnih obolenj, težnjo po zamenjavi poklica ter ovrednotili posamezne trdite stanja lastne izgorelosti.

Burnout among Slovenian family medicine trainees

Opis: Background: Burnout as a distinct work-related syndrome is established by the combination of high scores for emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalisation(D), and a low score for personal accomplishment (PA). The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of burnout among Slovenian family medicine trainees and the influence of the socio-demographic characteristics on burnout assessment. Methods: The study included 127 family medicine trainees in a modular part of the residency in the study year 2008/09. A self-administered questionnaire addressed the socio-demographic variables (age, gender, marital status, and years of practice and labour details - number of patients per day, number of night shifts per month); the second part consisted of the Slovenian version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: The responses were received from 117 trainees (92 % response rate). In terms of burnout, 45.9 % respondents scored high for EE, 43.1 % for high D, and 45.9 % for low P, with 18.3 % scoring high burnout in all three dimensions, 27.5 % in two dimensions, 24.8 % in one dimension and only 29.4% id not score high for burnout in any dimension at al. A high EE wassignificantly associated with frequent work in the emergency unit (four times per month) and age; a higher D was associated only with frequent work inthe emergency unit (four times per month), whereas a low PA was not associated with any of the variables studied. Conclusions: The prevalence of burnout syndrome among family medicine trainees is high and consistent with data from other studies among the physicians worldwide using the same instrument. Family medicine trainees are at risk of burnout regardless of their demographic characteristics. Increased workload affects EE and D.

Some aspects of burnout in nursing homes

Opis: Nursing personnel in nursing homes for elderly citizens are exposed to a number of factors that contribute to possible burnout syndrome. For this reason, the set objective of the research was to measure the degree of burnout, check the correlation between the burnout syndrome and satisfaction at work, and psychosomatic symptoms, as well as to figure out the main characteristics of burnout syndrome among the nursing personnel in nursing homes for the elderly in Slovenia.

Burnout of older and younger employees

Opis: Background and Purpose: People spend a significant part of their lifespan working, but the role of age in job design and implementation of work have largely been ignored. The consequences can be evident in stress and burnout in different symptoms. Thus, age-diverse employees are faced with different symptoms of burnout and stress when carrying out their work. The main aim of this paper is to present burnout of older employees compared to younger employees in Slovenian companies. Design/Methodology/Approach: The paper is based on research including a survey between two age groups of employees, namely the younger employees that were classified in the group of under 50 years of age and the older employees that were classified in the group of above 50 years of age. Since the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro- Wilk test showed that the data was not normally distributed, the noan-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was used to verify differences in the physical symptoms of burnout, emotional symptoms of burnout, and behavioral symptoms of burnout in the workplace between two groups. Results: The results show that there are significant differences in the great majority of the variables describing the physical symptoms of burnout, emotional symptoms of burnout, and behavioral symptoms of burnout in the workplace between younger and older employees. Conclusion: Well-being in the workplace of age-diverse employees is a key for long-term effectiveness of organizations. Managers and employers should apply appropriate measures to reduce burnout as well as to contribute to employees well-being and better workplace performance.

5.
Internal structure of an alternative measure of burnout

Opis: This study evaluates the factorial validity and reliability of the Slovenian adaptation of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) in a sample of 1436 Slovenian employees of various occupations. Confirmatory factor analyses were used to evaluate alternative structural models of OLBI, and reliability of variant scales was estimated. The results reveal a different structure of the Slovenian adaptation compared with the original one and a very notable difference in reliability between positively and negatively framed items. The results could be explained with a response bias or the specific nature of burnout and work engagement that OLBI promises to assess simultaneously. Therefore, we believe that the internal structure of the original inventory needs to be reconsidered.

Health professionals - stress, burnout and prevention

Opis: The medical staffs in health service institutions are often required to spend time in intense involvement with other people. Frequently, the staff-client interaction is centred on the client's current problems (physical, psychological, social) and is therefore charged with feelings of pain and suffering, fear, despair, turmoil and anger. The main aim of our meeting is to discuss the consequences of such personal burdens as well as to get a better insight into the background of professional burnout phenomenon in general. Because a burnout could not be only the result of job characteristics but could appear also as the result of work organization type, social relationships, as well as of some personal characteristics and individual′s life style, too, it is essential to look for the forms of support not only on the individual, but it is necessary to consider also the preventive options at the institutional level.

The impact of behavioral symptoms of burnout on work engagement of older employees

Opis: The main objective of the paper is to determine the impact of behavioral symptoms of burnout of older employees on their work engagement in large- and medium- sized companies in Slovenia. The research is based on the implementation of a factor analysis by which we wanted to reduce the large number of variables into a smaller number of factors. With those factors, we performed a simple linear regression. Based on the results, we confirmed the hypothesis that behavioral symptoms of burnout of older employees have a statistically significant negative impact on their work engagement. Well-being of employees of varying ages in the workplace is key for long-term effectiveness of companies. From this point of view, companies should apply appropriate measures to reduce burnout as well as to contribute to employees’ well-being and better workplace performance, which is reflected in work engagement of employees.
