1. Bilingualism in Slovenian Istria : Studies and Issues in Its PreservationMojca Kompara Lukančič, Nives Lenassi, Sandro Paolucci, 2023 Opis: The volume starts with an overview chapter of studies on bilingualism and bilingual individuals in general, and the particular aspects and characteristics of bilingualism in Slovenian Istria. It continues with three chapters focusing on Italian in the bilingual area of the Slovenian coast. The second chapter presents surveys on the position of bilingualism, the influence of Italian media, the results of the secondary school leaving exams in Italian, and the status of bilingualism in Slovenian schools in the bilingual Littoral communities. The third chapter offers an analysis of texts and documents translated from Slovenian into Italian; that is, bilingual texts available on the websites of the four bilingual municipalities: Koper, Izola, Piran, and Ankaran. The final chapter presents some detailed aspects of studies carried out on administrative texts of the bilingual municipalities, focusing on selected lexical units and acronyms, and offering translation solutions that guarantee and preserve minority rights and offer uniform terminology. 2. Three Languages in Early ChildhoodSabina Kramer, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: Moving all over the world can result in mixed marriages and households. Parents with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds are faced with the dilemma of how raising their children in a multilingual environment.
The aim of this work is to provide the reader with insight into a complex situation of multilingual upbringing. This paper deals with the development of children’s trilingualism, specifically with the children growing up with two languages from birth and one additional language soon afterwards.
The results of the family case study show that raising children with three languages requires organisation and consistency. Moreover, the children's language proficiency in all three languages is connected to the amount of exposure to each language. The English linguistic competence is lower in comparison to Slovene and Spanish; this is attributed to the fact that the children had smaller exposure to English language. Furthermore, all three research subjects have been codeswitching; the oldest research subject did not codeswitch in the earlier language production but after being exposed to three languages for a longer period of time. On the other hand, the younger research subjects who were exposed to English at a much earlier age, codeswitched more in the earlier English language production. The children codeswitched in all three languages; however, at present, most codeswitches are in Slovenian and English. 3. Effects of social interactions on learning and developing foreign language and phonetic learning in infancyTina Dornik, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: The main aim of the master's thesis is to gather as much information as possible on early second language acquisition, types of bilingualism and language changes that occur in early second language acquisition and bilingualism. The main objective was visiting a 21-month-old child, regularly for one hour per week, for a period of one year, with whom the author communicated exclusively in English. The purpose of this was to determine the possibilities of developing the earliest type of bilingualism possible in a child living in an all Slovenian family. The fundamental research question was whether a constant but relatively short (1x per week) form of social interaction could result in development of this form of bilingualism. The author collects material through fieldwork with audio and video material and writing a journal with basic findings and further suggestions for work in this field. 4. RAISING BILINGUAL CHILDRENTadeja Božič, 2016, diplomsko delo Opis: Bilingualism has a lot of benefits and positive effects on a person. After decades of research on the effects of bilingualism on children's development, there are things that just prove that. According to Döpke (1994: 1) "bilingual children have been found to learn to read more quickly and more effectively, to be able to use language in a more flexible ways, to be more expressive, and to be able to reflect upon language use at an earlier age than do monolingual children".
The diploma thesis consists of two parts. In the theoretical part I described some of the basic parental methods which are used in order to raise a bilingual child. When you are using the "one parent - one language" method the result is always that children switch among languages with such an ease. From that, a code-mixing could appear. Also, you could never be equally exposed to both languages due to various factors and somehow one becomes stronger, the other weaker. In the empirical part I wanted to check the children, who are learning English simultaneously, and monolingual children, who are learning English as a second language sequentially, by giving them a test to write in order to find out who is more proficient in English language and who can apply it better. I was also interviewing the mother of the two boys, who has the most important role in their lives how did she start with the project of the bilingualism that feels so natural and what is the key to the success. 6. CODE-SWITCHING IN COMMENTS ON SLOVENE INTERNET JOURNALISTIC ARTICLESAndreja Krošelj, 2015, diplomsko delo Opis: Code-switching is one of the possible linguistic outcomes in a bilingual/multilingual environment. Despite the lack of consensus among linguists about terminology definition, most agree on the fundamental difference between borrowing and code-switching; the latter requiring a complete switch to L2. This diploma paper discusses code-switching in comments on Slovene Internet journalistic articles. In the empirical section, forty-five comments on twenty-five Slovene Internet journalistic articles were analysed. The research had two main objectives; the first one was to establish which language contact phenomena the examples represent according to various definitions, and to determine terminology used in further analysis with its accompanying definitions. The second goal was to discover characteristics of code-switching in Internet comments, including listing the topics most frequently commented when using code-switching, and languages commentators have switch to, naming the reasons for switching, and describing grammatical characteristics of switches. The results have shown that the line between borrowing and intrasentential code-switching is not always clear cut. Intersentential code-switching has proven to be the most frequent type of switching. Music, politics and entertainment industry are topics most frequently commented by using code-switching. English being lingua franca of the Internet has proven to be also the language commentators most frequently switched to. Switches, often triggered by the topic and/or style of writing of the commented texts, communicate something beyond the superficial meaning of their words. In most cases, more than one reason for such behaviour can be assigned to an individual example. Grammatical analysis has shown that comments, often written in Netspeak, possess many grammatical features of spoken discourse.
