Some aspects of fabric drape

Opis: Drape is one of the important factors influencing the aesthetics and functionality of fabrics. Therefore, investigation into drape parameters is important for analysing its behaviour. Drape parameters were investigated from different aspects using the Cusick Drape meter and Image Analyser. Firstly, the influence of time on the drape coefficient and number of folds was studied over 24 hours. Usually, drape is considered as a static, time-independent problem. However, this investigation shows that the drape coefficient of a fabric changes si-gnificantly over a longer time period. Furthermore, the comparison of drape parameters is shown using samples with two different diameters. The larger samples have smaller drape coefficient than those with smaller diameters, and their drape is less changeable over time. Basically, the three-dimensional fabric drape is not an independent fabric property, there-fore, the connection between bending rigidity and drapecoefficient was studied. The last aspect of this investigation was the repeatability of drape measurements, and the establish-ment of the required number of measurements for drape coefficient and fold numbers.

A low bending loss multimode fiber transmission system

Opis: This paper presents a high bend tolerant multimode optical fiber transmission system that is compatible with standard 50 ìm graded index multimode fiber, interms of achievable bandwidth and interconnectivity losses. When the 10 loops of the proposed bend resistive multimode fiber were wrapped around a cylinder of 1.5 mm radius, bend losses below -0.2 dB were achieved in case of experimentally produced fiber. Furthermore, when the section of the proposed bend resistive fiber was inserted between two sections of a standard 50 ìm graded index multimode fiber, the total experimental measured loss proved to be below -0.15 dB.

Analysis of cracked slender-beams on Winkler's foundation using a simplified computational model

Opis: This paper discusses the coupling of Winkler's soil model with a simplified computational model that is widely used for the calculation of transverse displacements in transversely cracked slender beams. The bending problem of a cracked beam embedded in Winkler's soil is addressed by means of an analytical approach. The solving of the corresponding differential equation solutions is studied in order to obtain exact analytical expressions for the transverse displacements of the simplified computational model. After the solutions for the displacements of the beam are obtained, the inner bending moment and the shear force distributions within the beam can be calculated, either by using known, established relationships from the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory or by implementing two mechanical equilibrium conditions. Numerical examples covering several load situations are briefly presented in order to support the discussed approach. The results obtained with the presented approach are then further compared with the values from huge 2D finite-element models, where a detailed description of the crack was achieved using the discrete approach. It is evident that any drastic difference in the computational effort is not reflected in the significant differences in the results between the models.

Evaluating the bending rigidity of flat textiles with the use of an Instron tensile tester

Opis: The purpose of this work is to verify the possibility of using an Instron tensile tester for evaluating those mechanical properties of flat textile fabrics which are responsible for their handle properties. A method of evaluating the bending rigidity of woven fabrics was developed. The method consists in axially compressing samples fixed at both ends and placed in a vertical position, which leads to their buckling. The bending rigidity was determined on the basis of the critical maximum force occurring at buckling, and the curvature of the buckled sample which appears as result of the action of this force. The results obtained by this method were compared with those obtained with the use of the FAST system. The good compatibility of both these methods was proved by the correlation coefficients.

Numerical calculation of bending fatigue life of thin-rim spur gears

Opis: Mechanical elements subjected to cyclic loading have to be designed against fatigue. The main goal of the presented analysis was to determine the the bending fatigue life prediction of thin rim spur gears. The service life is divided into the initiation phase of the damage accumulation and the crack growth, resprcitively. The analysis has been performed usig FEM and BEM. The continuum mechanics approach is used for the prediction of the fatigue life initiation phase, where the basic fatigue material parameters are taken into account. The evaluation of the structure remaining life with initial crack the linear-elastic fracture mechanics LEFM principles are applied.

Computational model for the analysis of bending fatigue in gears

Opis: A computational model for the determination of service life of gears with regard to bending fatigue in a gear tooth root is presented. The fatigue process leading to tooth breakage is divided into crack initiation (Ni) and crack propagation (Np) periods, where the complete service life is defined as N = Ni + Np. The strain-life method in the framework of the FEM method has been used to determine the number of stress cycles Ni required for fatigue crack initiation. Gear tooth crack propagation was simulated using a FEM method based computer program which uses principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The Paris equation is then used for the further simulation of the fatigue crack growth. The presented model is used to determine the service life of a real spur gear made from through-hardened steel 42CrMo4.

Reinforced prefabricated timber shear walls

Opis: The paper presents results of shear-bending experiments performed on panel shear walls used as load-carrying capacity walls in the construction of prefabricated timber structures. The aim of research is to determine the difference in resistance and ductility between panel shear walls, reinforced with two different methods. While the first, reinforcing with additional fiberboard, was not improve resistance and especially ductility in the contended sense, we tried to find a solution by inserting diagonal steel strips, which were fixed to the timber frame. Additionally, analytical solutions of those by mathematical modeling with the fictive thickness and height of fiber-plaster boards are proposed. Presented design models are simple and show a good coincidence with the measured results.

Prediction of technological parameters of sheet metal bending in two stages using feed-forward neural network

Opis: This paper describes sheet metal bending in two stages as well as predicting and testing of the final bend angle by means of a feed-forward neural network. The primary objective was to research the technological parameters of bending sheet metal in two stages and to develop an intelligent method that would enable the predicting of those technological parameters. The process of bending sheet metal in two stages is presented by demonstrating the various technological parameters and the test tool used to carry out tests and measurements. The results of the tests and measurements were of decisive guidance in the evaluation of individual technological parameters. Developed method for prediction of the final bend angle is based on a feed-forward neural network that receives signals at the input level. These signals then travel through the hidden level to the output level, where the responses to input signals are received. The input to the neural network is composed of data that affect the selection of the final bend angle. Only five different inputs are used for the total neural network. By choosing the desired final bend angle by means of the trained neural network, bending sheet metal in two stages is optimised and made more efficient.

The importance of tensile strength in geotechnical engineering

Opis: Many Soil mechanics textbooks contain only limited information about tensile characteristics. Šuklje’s “Rheological aspects of soil mechanics” [1] is an exception, as he devoted a special chapter to this problem “Tensile and Bending Strength of Soils”. Therefore, it is not a great surprise that the subject of the 13th Šuklje’s Lecture is devoted to soil behaviour in tension. Tensile tests are briefly described, some results as well, with a distinction between undrained and drained tests. Practical examples of the application of the results are discussed, firstly in cases where the development of tensile cracks can be expected. Because the results of the drained tests give more information about the bonds between individual particles, some theoretical aspects of these tests are discussed as well.
