Impact of work-family balance results on employee work engagement within the organization : the case of Slovenia
Jasmina Žnidaršič, Mojca Bernik, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and purpose: Organizations strive to increase the work engagement of their employees, as engaged employees are more productive employees, but often neglect the significant effects of work-family balance on work engagement. Numerous studies confirm the importance of work-family balance and work engagement, but there is lack of research that explores the relationship between the concepts. Our research fills a research gap in investigating the impact of work-family balance on work engagement, both directly and through individual perceptions of organizational support for work-family balance. The main aim of our research is to empirically test the relationships between the policies and practices of organizations regarding work-family balance, work-life balance and work engagement. Methods: Using validated questionnaires, we collected data on organizational support for work-family balance (family-friendly policies and practices, support by leader, support by co-workers, working hours and complexity of work), work-family balance and work engagement. The quantitative data for our analysis was collected through a survey of 343 online participants who were employees in various positions in companies in Slovenia. The results: Our results show that the organization's work-family balance policies and practices, such as support by leader, co-workers, and family-friendly policies and practices, have a positive impact on the individual's work-family balance, that work-family balance leads to an increase in work engagement, and that the individual's perception of the organization's work-family balance support leads to an increase in work engagement. Conclusion: Knowledge of important work-family balance implications with an understanding of organizational support for work-family balance and the relationships between the constructs of work-family balance and work engagement can be beneficial to business leaders. This understanding can help them to strengthen employee work engagement through family-friendly policies and practices, and thereby contributing to the area of employee behavior and improving employee productivity.

Relationships between work-family balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and work engagement among higher education lecturers
Jasmina Žnidaršič, Miha Marič, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and Purpose: Our research examines the impact of work-life balance on work engagement, both direct impact as well as through job and life satisfaction. The main aim of our research is to empirically test relations between work-life balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and work engagement among higher education lecturers from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Serbia, and Slovenia. Methods: Using validated questionnaires, we collected data on work-life balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and their work engagement. The quantitative data for our analysis were collected through a survey of 164 online participants. Based on an extensive literature review, we have formulated five hypotheses, which we tested in one structural model by using structural equation modelling (SEM). Results: Our findings show that an increase in work-life balance positively relates to life and work satisfaction and that life satisfaction leads to an increase in work engagement. Conclusion: The knowledge of important impact of work-life balance, together with the understanding of the relations between the researched constructs of work-life balance, life satisfaction, job satisfaction and work engagement, can strengthen teachers’ work engagement by respecting employees as actors in other roles and supporting work-family balance in the form of family-friendly policies and practices, and thereby contributes to the area of employee’s behaviour and improves the teacher’s productivity.

Creation of own reserves for own shares in the acquisition of own shares for withdrawal by simplified procedure under Slovenian law where the consideration is paid in instalments
Gregor Drnovšek, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: During the process of withdrawing own shares, the rules that are relevant, among others, to their acquisition by the company are regulations governing the creation of reserves for own shares. The regulations are clear in cases where the company acquires their own shares simultaneously with the payment of the purchase price. This article will pertain to the proper application of these regulations according to Slovenian law, specifically in cases where the company pays the purchase price for their own shares, which it intends to withdraw after acquisition, in instalments, and acquires their own shares only after paying the last instalment of the purchase price.

Negative impacts of forest fires on ecological balance and environmental sustainability : case of Turkey
Muzaffer Bakirci, 2010, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Forests are a vital element in the Earth’s ecological balance, economy, biodiversity, water resources and air purity. On the other hand, forests are confronted with various threats – one of them being fires. Its distinctive geographical features provide Turkey with rich plant diversity along with an imbalance in the dispersion of forested land. 27% of Turkey’s surface area is covered by forests, most of which are concentrated on the coastal lands and their hinterlands. 2.135 forest fires were recorded in Turkey in 2008, resulting in a loss of 29.749 ha of forest. Although this figure translates into a decrease of 25% in the number of fires, the amount of destroyed forestland increased by 155% with respect to the previous year. This paper questions the incendiary causes and negative effects of fires in the case of Turkey.

Work-life balance by area, actual situation and expectations : the overlapping opinions of employers and employees in Slovenia
Tatjana Kozjek, Nina Tomaževič, Janez Stare, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: The question of work-life balance (WLB) is an area where increasing attention is being paid nowadays. States, organisations and employees all have responsibility and a role to play in WLB. This article presents the important areas of the WLB by key players in this field. Purpose:The purpose of the research was to compare and analyse the differences between the actual situation and the expectations of employers and employees with regard to specific areas of WLB in Slovenia. Methodology: Data was gathered using the Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) method. In the first part of the research project, employers across all sectors of the economy in Slovenia were questioned and in second part focussed on employees. In order to verify the areas in which employers and employees agree and those in which there are differences in perception, multidimensional scaling (MDS) was used. Results: The results of our research show that Slovenian organisations must pay more attention to flexible working time, the employeesʼ ability to take time off to care for family members, time and stress management workshops and paid leave for parents on a childʼs first day of school. Conclusion: A significant role in WLB is played by organisations. The incorporation of WLB strategies into the strategic and financial planning of an organisation can, in fact, have positive business, economic and social effects. Employees have to express their expectations and needs, which is the only way that employers can be made aware of their problems and help with WLB. State responsibility is to encourage all social partners to shape the living environment in which employeesʼ can achieve a good WLB with an emphasison gender equality.

Macroeconomic determinants of the non-performing placements and off-balance sheet liabilities of Croatian banks
Manuel Benazić, Dajana Radin, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and Purpose: The non-performing placements and off-balance sheet liabilities are often considered key factors that lead to banking crises. Economic and financial crises increase the level of the non-performing placements and off-balance sheet liabilities which can cause significant losses for banks. Effective management and regulatory/ supervisory institutions such central banks should be able to recognize and quantify these effects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to empirically determine the existence and the quantitative impact of main Croatian macroeconomic variables on the non-performing placements and off-balance sheet liabilities of Croatian banks in the long and short-run. Methodology: For this purpose the bounds testing (ARDL) approach for cointegration is applied. The ARDL model is performed in two steps. The first step starts with conducting the bounds test for cointegration. In the second step, when cointegration is found, the long-run relationship and the associated error correction model are estimated. Results: The results indicate the existence of stable cointegration relationship between the variables i.e. in the longrun, an increase in real GDP reduces the level of the non-performing placements and off-balance sheet liabilities of Croatian banks wherein an increase in prices, unemployment, interest rate and the depreciation of the Croatian kuna exchange rate increases their level. On the other hand, in the short-run the results are rather mixed. Conclusion: To avoid crises, effective bank management and regulatory/supervisory institutions should be able to recognize and quantify these effects. This is a necessary precondition for implementation of an adequate prudential and monetary policy measures for reducing the level of the non-performing placements and off-balance sheet liabilities.

Impact of terms-of-trade on Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Croatia in the short run
Karol Szomolányi, Martin Lukáčik, Adriana Lukáčiková, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The terms-of-trade shocks are not main source of business cycles in three post-communist countries (i.e., Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Croatia). The zero or negative reactions of the trade balance in terms-of-trade positive shocks in the countries exhibit the Obstfeld-Svensson-Razin effect, according to which the Harberger-Laursen-Metzler positive effect on terms-of-trade indicates that the smaller the trade balance, the more persistent the terms-of-trade shock is. The conclusions come from the structural vector autoregressive analysis of the cyclical components of terms-of-trade, trade balance, output, consumption, and investment in three post-communist countries.

What is it worth? : Determining the capital stock of european hydropower plants
Petra Gsodam, Heinrich Stigler, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: High lifetimes and high capital intensities characterize fixed assets of electric utilities. The historical cost concept implicate that long-lasting fixed assets are shown too low in balance sheets of electric utilities: the real value of long-lasting assets is not shown because of nominal price increases. An alternative to show the real value of longterm assets represents the capital stock concept based on replacement values less depreciations (net capital stock). To calculate the capital stock, information regarding the level of investment in each power plant at the time of construction (historical acquisition values) and with regard to a common base year (replacement values) is necessary. This paper shows how the not-standardized investments in hydropower plants can be estimated and how the capital stock of run-of-river and threshold hydropower plants can be calculated. Long-term assets in the form of run-of-river and threshold hydropower plants are compared based on historic costs and replacement values. The paper concludes that given nominal price increases for replacement investments, as is the case with long-lasting hydropower plants, only depreciations based on replacement values can ensure preservation of the company’s assets.

Health professionals - stress, burnout and prevention : the international conference, October 6, 2017, book of contributions
2017, druge monografije in druga zaključena dela

Opis: The medical staffs in health service institutions are often required to spend time in intense involvement with other people. Frequently, the staff-client interaction is centred on the client's current problems (physical, psychological, social) and is therefore charged with feelings of pain and suffering, fear, despair, turmoil and anger. The main aim of our meeting is to discuss the consequences of such personal burdens as well as to get a better insight into the background of professional burnout phenomenon in general. Because a burnout could not be only the result of job characteristics but could appear also as the result of work organization type, social relationships, as well as of some personal characteristics and individual′s life style, too, it is essential to look for the forms of support not only on the individual, but it is necessary to consider also the preventive options at the institutional level.

Perceived gender equality in managerial positions in organizations
Polona Tominc, Urban Šebjan, Karin Širec, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and Purpose: This research aims to achieve two main objectives: to investigate differences between male and female managers regarding the perceived gender equality in organizations and to analyze the gender differences in relationships among the perceived gender equality, the perceived satisfaction with employment position and career, the perceived satisfaction with work, and the perceived work-family conflict. Design/Methodology/Approach: The sample of research includes 82 managers in Slovenian organizations. In first stage, we analyzed with t-test differences between male and female regarding perceived gender equality in decision-making positions. In the next step we developed the conceptual models and used structural equational modeling (SEM), and analyzed differences between constructs in two conceptual models. Results: The research results show that female managers perceive gender equality in organizations in general to be significantly lower than males; furthermore, perceived gender equality is positively related to the perceived satisfaction with employment position and career as well as to the perceived satisfaction with work, but both relationships are significantly stronger for female managers. On the other hand female managers seems to cope more efficiently with the perceived work-family conflict since it has significantly different impact on female managers’ perceived satisfaction with work, as compared to the male managers. Conclusion: To achieve more gender equality within organizations and a reduction of the gender gap, the legislative initiatives cannot be successful without appropriate corporate strategy sets, which presents the framework for doing business and determines the internal working culture. The findings offer several policy, as well as business practice-oriented implications.
