Analytical hierarchy process as a tool for selecting and evaluating projects

Opis: This paper explains the reasons for selecting the right project to conduct business in various organisations. It presents several methods for evaluating and selecting projects. A special focus is on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method that is becoming increasingly important tool in different decision-making situations. We have used this method in project management anddeveloped a project evaluation and selecting process. We have also developed a simple application in MS Excel that helps with calculating projectsć total priority grade. This tool helps us with simulating project importance based on changes in perception of the criteria.

Engineering education: environmental and chemical engineering or technology curricula - a European perspective

Opis: Over recent years, universities have been incorporating sustainable development (SD) into their systems, including their curricula. This article analyses the incorporation of SD into the curricula of chemical and environmental engineering or technology bachelor degrees at universities in the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states. Available textbooks of some courses were analysed regarding their content and pedagogical-didactical perspectives based on a revised Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive domains. The research showed that both the universities and textbooks reviewed have room for improvement regarding SD incorporation into their curricula.

Accessible Web for Deaf and Hard of Hearing with Transparent Multimodal Sign Language Interpreter Module

Opis: World Wide Web is becoming increasingly necessary for everybody regardless of age, gender, culture, health and individual disabilities. Unfortunately, the information on the Web is still not accessible to deaf and hard of hearing Web users since these people require translations of written forms into their first language: sign language, which is based on facial expressions, hands and body movements and has its own linguistic structure. This thesis introduces a possible solution (method) for providing accessible information to the deaf and hard of hearing on the Web. The Sign Language Interpreter Module (SLI Module) method combines three different types of modalities: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. The visual modality is represented by the video of a sign language interpreter with the addition of subtitles. The auditory modality is reflected as speech and the kinesthetic modality is defined as user interaction; activating sign language videos on demand. In comparison to previous technological Web solutions, the innovation of the proposed SLI Module method is that it envelops various modalities for delivering written information. The presentation of this information as sign language videos with subtitles can be easily integrated into original Web sites, while fully preserving the layout's structure. This is possible due to the use of Web specifications such as HTML for layout presentation and the ubiquitous use of JavaScript scripting language for interaction. In addition, the method uses external W3C Timed Text format for subtitling. The analysis of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 recommendations showed that these recommendations are still too general and inadequate for deaf people who use sign language as their first language. For this reason, the thesis argues that the main problem of the Web accessibility guidelines is that they focus mainly on functionalities instead of user experience. In the thesis, the reasons for selecting sign language videos over synthetic signing, such as avatars, are addressed. The process of producing sign language videos is described in depth. The thesis analyses present Web dictionaries on the Web and introduces motivations factors and development of a Web glossary on demand (SLI Glossary) using the SLI Module method. Additionally, this approach can be used for monitoring Web users‟ activities and can also be used as an indicator for further sign language videos recordings. The SLI Glossary method does not represent a text-to-sign-language automatic translator, but a way to enable single word sign language translations to original Web sites. Based on the experience obtained from the evaluation studies, the SLI Module method is gaining wide acceptance within the Deaf community as it assists them to get the written form of information by using a multimodal information retrieval. Finally, the SLI Module follows worldwide declarations and legislations regarding human rights on equal access to information, since it facilitates sign language as a primary communication channel. The goal of the thesis is also to start an initiative for Slovenian sign language recognition and increase people's awareness about its usage.

Methodology of evaluation and monitoring teacher - mentor and teacher - trainee

Opis: In Slovenia new teachers are required to complete a ten-month probationary period in a school. In this period they are supervised by a teacher-mentor, who does not have any detailed documentation on how to supervise the probation teachers. The research we have done investigated how teacher-mentors evaluated their own mentoring experiences. The study involvedd 160 teachers and 77 headmasters from Slovenian schools. The data received from the questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively. We found out that the teacher probationary period is suitable. Teachers are satisfied with their menthorship role, because it is a challenge for them and they can gain new knowledge. A lot of teachers think that they would need an additional qualifi cation and an additional material for their work with the probation teachers. Teacher mentors are not enough qualified for their mentors work, therefore they need support in workshops with examples of good practice and detailed guidelines for their work.

Self-concept of students in inclusive settings

Opis: The present evaluation case study investigates the self-concept of the students from 7th grade in regular primary school. The study results indicate that, in comparison to their hearing peers, integrated students with a hearingimpairment have a lower academic and social self-concept, as well as a general self-concept but a higher physical self-concept. There are differences among students with a hearing impairment in both the individual dimension and general self-concept. There are no statistically significant differences between the class with integrated students, on the one hand, and the class without them, on the other; however, there is a noticeable advantage for the students from the class with integrated learners over the other class serving as control group in all three individual dimensions as well as in general self-concept.

Obstacles to change in teacher education : Elektronski vir

Opis: In his paper, the author points to the well-known fact that the key obstacle to quality improvement in many traditional teacher education institutions is the prevailing philosophy which gives priority to traditional academic disciplines and specialist subject knowledge at the expense of practical and professional knowledge that teachers need. He then presents some of the findings of his research, a rational end empirical evaluation of the study programme for future English language teachers at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor in which he investigated, among other things, the beliefs of the academic staff about the role of theory and practice in the curriculum and, specifically, their beliefs about the relevance of their respective subjects (academic disciplines) for the programme as such. The findings suggest that many of the academic staff, while formally recognising the role of practical knowledge for the profession of the teacher, show little awareness of the purposes of contemporary teacher education and hold rather idealised views about the relevance oftheir respective subjects (academic disciplines) for the study programme as such. For comparison, some findings of an empirical study conducted among students are also given.

Automated diagnostics of damage to an aluminum alloy under the conditions of high-cycle fatigue

Opis: An identification and quantitative analysis of the deformation relief of the aluminium alloy for an aircraft construction based on a digital-image processing has been performed. The behaviour of defects has been assessed on the basis of diagnostics results for individual stages of the deformation process. It has been established that the individual stages of the damage-accumulation process are characterised by the values of integral-image parameters. Based on the consecutive processing of the data on the surface cyclic deformation, the main regularities of the propagation of defects have been found. Theoretical preconditions have been substantiated and experimental results obtained.

Implementation, effectiveness and experience with remote laboratory in engineering education

Opis: Modern educational methods bring many new challenges from the pedagogical, as well as from the technical aspect. One of the more significant is the integration of information and communication technology into the educational process. These is particularly noticeable in the engineering education where the requests of the industry for a faster and more efficient acquisition of knowledge and practical skills lead to a constant search for new solutions in the learning process which would attract and motivate students, as well as be user friendly. This is especially difficult to be reached with the practical education which is usually composed of laboratory exercises that are bound to a specific time and place. One of the possible solutions are the remote laboratories which offer the possibility of the implementation of real remote laboratory experiments in the educational institutionsć laboratories and, therefore, enhance the studentsć knowledge and capability for dealing with some technical problems without the need for their physical presence in the laboratory. In the article, the example of a successful implementation of the remote laboratory in the field of engineering, developed and operating in the Moodle environment, is presented. The laboratory does not only represent the framework for the experiment implementation, but it also offers courses with complete documentation, therefore courses can be performed on distance. As an example, the case of the most widely used course from remote laboratory is presented, i.e., the ĆControl of nonlinear mechanismĆ course. Special attention is given to the description of the booking process for remote experiments, the execution of remote experiments and the applied user interface. The evaluation of the interface usability from the point of view of end users was performed via the acknowledged SUMI method. Additionally, another questionnaire was prepared in order to investigate the studentsć opinion about working in the remote laboratory. The results have shown that the presented remote laboratory is user friendly and accepted by both teachers and students as a suitable and interesting supplement to the conventional laboratory exercises.
