Does undergraduate education influence teachers' perceptions of learning and teching? : the case of the Republic of Slovenia

Opis: In the first part of the paper, different models of teacher education are presented and analysed: the pre-technocratic model or the model of training master craftsmen; the technocratic model or the model of applied science; and the post-technocratic model or the reflexive model. In the second part of the paper, the results of the empirical research are presented. The aim of the empirical research was to determine the influence of undergraduate teacher education on teachers' perceptions of learning and teaching and, consequently,on teachers' actions. In Slovenia, teachers' education was carried out following two main models: the pre-technocratic model or model of training master craftsmen, which was typical for the Academy of Education, and the technocratic model or the so-called model of applied science, which is used at the education faculties nowadays. Because of this dualism in teachers'education models, there exist differences between teachers and their perception and actions as well.

Use of learning media and technology by preparation and realization of music lessons

Opis: The paper presents the usage of learning media and education technology in music lessons. The aim of the empirical research was to study the learning media usage in preparation and realization of students' presentation in music education lessons. There were 105 students participating, attending 4th year for elementary education at the Faculty of Education at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. The results have shown that during preparation for music lessons and in class students mostly use traditional learning media. When performing in the classroom they mostly use CD player and keyboards, while during preparation for the lesson they use computer, student book, workbook, CD player and keyboards. The time of usage of the media is much longer when preparing lessons as compared to the time needed when performing in the classroom. In spite of a high self-evaluation for using learning media, it wasconcluded that in no case students have used modern technology including computer music programmes and MIDI environment.

Computer-informatics literacy and possibilities of computing extra-curricular activities

Opis: The following article analyzes some of the results of investigation ĆPresent State and Trends of Using Computers in Slovenia Primary and Secondary SchoolsĆ. This work is elaborated by the author every two years for Ministry of education and sport and national project ĆInformatization of Slovenian Educational SystemĆ. Article analyzes some didactic criteria of teaching computer science and first of all performing computing extra-curricular activities at primary, secondary and boarding schools in sense of improvement on computer - informatics literacy.

Primary preservice teacher change intervention program for mathematics

Opis: An intervention program used in elementary teacher education in Slovenia is presented. Program is based on preserves teachers' field experience with mathematically promising students. Evaluation from three viewpoints (students' general creative abilities, students' mathematical achievements and preserves teachers' change in beliefs and conceptions concerning teaching and learning) has been conducted. Overall results speak in favour of presented approach. Additionally results support the claim that objectively scored free word associative experiment can be used to assist a classroom teacher in the identification of creative mathematically promising students.

Obstacles to change in teacher education : Elektronski vir

Opis: In his paper, the author points to the well-known fact that the key obstacle to quality improvement in many traditional teacher education institutions is the prevailing philosophy which gives priority to traditional academic disciplines and specialist subject knowledge at the expense of practical and professional knowledge that teachers need. He then presents some of the findings of his research, a rational end empirical evaluation of the study programme for future English language teachers at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor in which he investigated, among other things, the beliefs of the academic staff about the role of theory and practice in the curriculum and, specifically, their beliefs about the relevance of their respective subjects (academic disciplines) for the programme as such. The findings suggest that many of the academic staff, while formally recognising the role of practical knowledge for the profession of the teacher, show little awareness of the purposes of contemporary teacher education and hold rather idealised views about the relevance oftheir respective subjects (academic disciplines) for the study programme as such. For comparison, some findings of an empirical study conducted among students are also given.

A hidden curriculum in kindergartens and empathy of preschool teachers

Opis: The present article illustrates the problem of a hidden curriculum in kindergartens. It is presented as an important part of the overt curriculum. The empathy of kindergarten teachers is shown within the scope of a hidden curriculum. The second part discusses the results of the research on empathy of preschool teachers as an important element of the hidden curriculum in kindergartens. Four dimensions of empathy were identified: social self-confi dence, calmness, sensitivity and non-conformism. Each of these dimensions contributes on its own and together with the others to a better understanding of empathy of kindergarten teachers, which undoubtedly influences and encourages the development of emphatic communication among preschool teachers, children and parents.

The concept of team-work in the early childhood : the correlation between motor and foreign language learning in the early childhood

Opis: Collaborative teaching is used in many kindergartens, schools, colleges and universities around the world in order to foster learnersć enthusiasm, social skills and to promote interdisciplinary learning. In Slovenia the instruction to use this new method started in kindergartens and primary schools and two years ago in the secondary grammar schools around Slovenia. Unfortunately, team-teaching can sometimes be enforced and imposed onto professors with no firm aim or goal previously set. Such team - work can neither satisfy learners' needs, nor can it offer a stimulating environment for the professors involved in this fairly new method. Team-teaching method was used in a pilot project with very young learners of English called "Sports and English". It is believed that more professors working together can elaborate more dynamic, flexible, creative, interdisciplinary and methodologically demanding projects. Apparently, learning different skills by using various approaches in the early years helps with whole child development, because learning affects different fields of psychophysical development in similar ways. The key to this learning is the engagement of unconscious psychological processes, such as recognition, perception, etc. There are similar processes going on different learning activities, such as solving in problems through motor activities and foreign language learning. This research space focuses on the correlation between motor efficiency and the level of foreign language acquisition. The examples of good practice in the pilot project 'Sports and English' are presented in terms of team-teaching of two professors, and consequently cross-curricular disciplines and assessment. Not only does team teaching have a great impact on developing learners' multiple intelligences and learning styles, it also develops social skills and the perception of individuals. Finally, correlation of the two disciplines with two professors contributes tremendously to whole child development.

Introducing nonlinear time series analysis in undergraduate courses

Opis: This article is written for undergraduate students and teachers who would like to get familiar with basic nonlinear time series analysis methods. We present a step-by-step study of a simple example and provide user-friendly programs that allow an easy reproduction of presented results. In particular, we study an artificial time series generated by the Lorenz system. The mutual information and false nearest neighbour method are explained in detail, and used to obtain the best possible attractor reconstruction. Subsequently, the times series is tested for stationarity and determinism, which are both important properties that assure correct interpretation of invariant quantities that can be extracted from the data set. Finally, as the most prominent invariant quantity that allows distinguishing between regular and chaotic behaviour, we calculate the maximal Lyapunov exponent. By following the above steps, we are able to convincingly determine that the Lorenz system is chaotic directly from the generated time series, without the need to use the differential equations. Throughout the paper, emphasis on clear-cut guidance and a hands-on approach is given in order to make the reproduction of presented results possible also for undergraduates, and thus encourage them to get familiar with the presented theory.
