Intercultural counseling as a current issue and what makes competent intercultural counselor
Marija Javornik Krečič, 2009, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the first part of the paper, the author finds that in the present the question of collaboration between members of the majority and the members of cultural, religious, social and other minorities is one of the most essential civilisational questions. Consequently, intercultural pedagogy and intercultural education play an important role here. Due to such multicultural conditions, school counseling, too, has developed some special features. Further on in the paper, the author defines and presents the characteristic features of intercultural counseling set up for pupils who are members of cultural minorities and immigrants, as well as for people who live and work with them. The final part of the paper defines the intercultural competence of a school counselor. The latter should be able to detect cultural aspects relating to the counselee, to recognise their role in the causing of the problem of the person seeking counsel and its solution. He/she should be able to incorporate them in the counseling situation and process.

Comparative assessment of young learners' foreign language competence in three Eastern European countries
Mihaela Brumen, Branka Čagran, Shelagh Rixon, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper concerns teacher practices in, and beliefs about, the assessment of young learners' progress in English in three Eastern European countries (Slovenia, Croatia, and the Czech Republic). The central part of the paper focuses on an international project involving empirical research into assessment of young learners' foreign language competence in Slovenia, Croatia and the Czech Republic. With the help of an adapted questionnaire, we collected data from a non-random sample of primary and foreign language teachers who teach foreign languages at the primary level in these countries. The research shows that English as a foreign language is taught mostly by young teachers either primary specialists or foreign language teachers. These teachers most frequently use oral assessment/interviews or self-developed tests. Other more authentic types of assessment, such as language portfolios, are rarely used. The teachers most frequently assess speaking and listening skills, and they use assessment involving vocabulary the most frequently of all. However, there are significant differences in practice among the three countries.

The communicative possibilities of contemporary art within the frame of art education
Matjaž Duh, Tomaž Zupančič, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article introduces the communicative possibilities that contemporary art offers within art education. The introduction deals with the relevant theoretical starting points and goes on to develop and explain the term "communicational paradox of contemporary art". The continuation of the article presents some possibilities for transcending this paradox. We then present some of our findings, based on a methodologically examined empirical follow up to this problem. We concentrated on the peripheral characteristics of contemporary art work that allow quality communication with the pupils. We emphasized visually interesting characteristics; united incompatibilities and used objects in an unusual way and with interesting ideas (concepts).

The relationship among knowledge of, attitudes toward and acceptance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) among Slovenian teachers
Andrej Šorgo, Jana Ambrožič-Dolinšek, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The objective of this study was to investigate knowledge about, opinions on and attitudes toward and finally readiness to accept genetically modified organisms (GMO) among Slovenian teachers. On average, they have higher levels of knowledge in classical genetics, and poor levels of knowledge about modern issues in biotechnology, and their attitudes toward GMOs are not extreme. They make decisions based on the acceptability of a particular GMO and not on GMOs in general, following two patterns: genetic modifications (GM) microorganisms and plants are more acceptable than animals, and GMOs are more acceptable if they can not be used directly for consumption and produce something recognized as useful. The relationship among knowledge of, attitudes towards and readiness to accept GMO showed that there is no correlation between knowledge and attitudes, only a weak correlation between knowledge and acceptance, and a solid correlation between attitudes and readiness to accept GMO. The practical implication of our findings is that acceptance of GMOs will not be changed by providing new technical or scientific information to teachers but by changing attitudes. The appropriate strategies and actions for improving university courses in biotechnology and the implication for classroom science activities and future research are discussed.

Evaluation of the planned curriculum for kindergartens in the field of music education
Olga Denac, 2009, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: The problem of planning music education is related to the philosophical dimension of the development of the curricula for music education. Knowledge and understanding of the theoretical bases, goals and principles of the curriculum is the basis for the planning, realisation and evaluation of the educational process of music education. The present article presents the results of a study which included 159 pre-school teachers from all over Slovenia. The aim of the research was to establish the place and the role music education should have in the curriculum designed for kindergartens, and to recognise the difficulties pre-school teachers encounter as they execute individual principles of the curriculum in the process of operative planning of music education. The designed curriculum was analysed from the point of view of structure, activities, goals, contents, teaching strategies and instructional media. The results of the research show that music education hasbeen losing professional autonomy within the field of art and that the teachers only partially carry out individual principles of the curriculum in the planning of the educational process.

Possible consequence of student's relationship to parents and to school
Samo Fošnarič, Antonija Milivojević Krajnčič, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This research work is dealing with the different behaviour of the young, adolescent people and their perception of the relationship with their parents and their attitude towards school in the time of their early adolescence. Research work is answering the questions connected with the relationship with the parents, attitude towards school as well as the behaviour deviation of adolescents (youth). The research is based on claim that teenager's relationship with his mother and father have an important influence on his/her behavior, especially on the conflicts with the environment. Opačič (1995) argues that the relationship between parents, the environment and the teenagers is not so important. Therefore, we were interested in teenagers' attitudes towards their relationships that they have with their parents. The following dimensions of a relationship were emphasized (observed in greater detail): control, punishment, intimacy and carelessness on the side of the parents. Through those dimensions we could show the teenager's comprehension of the relationship they have with their parents and/or mother and father's comprehension of the relationship in the early phase of adolescence. He stresses (emphasizes) their attitude (perception of) towards such relationships. Some quantity research procedures are used in this research work. There are four different non-standardized questionnaires: The frequency of the behaviour deviation, A relationship with a mother, A relationship with a father, A conflict situations with parents connected with different conversation themes, An attitude towards school. The study relies on descriptive and causal-non-experimental methods of empirical pedagogical research. The research includes an accidental sample of the pupils attending 7th and 9th class of the Primary school in Maribor in the school year 2007 (n=300).

The journey of a sandwich: computer-based laboratory experiments about the human digestive system in high school biology teaching
Andrej Šorgo, Zdravka Hajdinjak, Darko Briški, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Teaching high school students about the digestive system can be a challenge for a teacher when s/he wants to overcome rote learning of facts without a deeper understanding of the physiological processes inside the alimentary tract. A series of model experiments illustrating the journey of a sandwich was introduced into teaching high school biology. Using a computer equipped with a commercially available data-acquisition system and a couple of sensors,it was possible to illustrate the basic underlying physical and chemical principles of digestion to the students. Students were able to investigate, through hands-on activities, the chewing force of the jaws, importance of the mechanical breakdown of food, enzymatic activity of pepsin and amylase, antibacterial activity of hydrochloric acid, and importance of the villi for absorption. Students found the experiments interesting and helpful for understanding the digestive process. Furthermore, the results fromtesting indicated that the students had a deeper understanding of the physiological processes.

Self-concept of students in inclusive settings
Majda Schmidt, Branka Čagran, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The present evaluation case study investigates the self-concept of the students from 7th grade in regular primary school. The study results indicate that, in comparison to their hearing peers, integrated students with a hearingimpairment have a lower academic and social self-concept, as well as a general self-concept but a higher physical self-concept. There are differences among students with a hearing impairment in both the individual dimension and general self-concept. There are no statistically significant differences between the class with integrated students, on the one hand, and the class without them, on the other; however, there is a noticeable advantage for the students from the class with integrated learners over the other class serving as control group in all three individual dimensions as well as in general self-concept.
