Advantages and disadvantages of information-communication technology usage for four-year-old children, and the concequences of its usage for the childrens' development

Opis: Information-communication technologies (ICT) are a part of our world and we use them every day. They represent an important source of information about us and others, as well as about local and world events. Besides that, ICT can also be very attractive for pre-school children, who acquaint with them very quickly. This article presents advantages and disadvantages of ICT usage for a four-year-old pre-school child and its potential consequences for the child's development. The data was collected with the help of 130 parents. They were asked to fill out a questionnaire and share their opinions about their four-year-old children's usage of ICT at home. We found out that in the case of four-year-old children the usage of ICT has its advantages and disadvantages, and that the consequences of its usage (positive and negative) would be approximately the same.

Pupils and their perception of media violence

Opis: In modern informational society the media has become a constituent part of peoples' and pupils' everyday life. Along with many positive effects they have also brought numerous negative ones, such as violence. Violence in media influences the receivers - pupils. The most alarming consequences of pupils' frequent contact with media violence are imitation and apathy. The survey, carried out among pupils from 4th-8th grade of different primary schools in Slovenia shows their perception of media violence in these modern times.

Experiential learning - a case on diapers' polymers

Opis: The development of science competences requires establishing a link between theory and real world experience. Experiential learning offers the possibility for developing effective science competences as well as specific chemical competences at different stages of the educational vertical. The experiential learning strategy was implemented through experimental work and the cooperative learning method. Students studied diapers' polymers during chemistry class. The results of the case study analysis confirm better motivation for studying chemistry when material from everyday life is used as an educational prop. In order to monitor development levels of individual student competences, a set of instruments which includes monitoring dialogic teaching should be further developed.

False reality or hidden messages: reading graphs obtained in computerized biological experiments

Opis: Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an inseparable part of schoolwork and a goal of education to prepare scientifically literate and digitally competent citizens. Yet the introduction of computers into school work has been much slower than its introduction in other spheres of life. Teachers' lack of knowledge/skills and difficulty in integrating ICT into instruction affect the realization of computer-related goals in schools. Another hidden obstacle that can affect the introduction of computers into the Biology laboratory can be discomfort with the interpretation of graphs obtained by data-loggers. We can group these difficulties with graph outcomes into 4 areas: 1) Explanations of the curves that lie beyond the domain of Biology, in Physics, Chemistry or some other discipline; 2) Hardware properties; 3) Unknown properties of experimental components; 4) Occasional equipment breakdowns or crashes.

Preschool teacher career and why individuals choose it

Opis: The first part of the article examines certain fundamental theoretical facts about preschool education courses and the preschool teacher profession, as well as current theoretical and empirical knowledge about the motives for choosing this career path. The central part of the article is devoted to the empirical study. A study was performed on a sample of 616 students and preschool teachers to determine their opinions about how suitable they think their choice of education and future profession was, and about the motivational factors that led the respondents to choose preschool education studies and the preschool teacher profession. The study also factored in respondents' backgrounds (students, teachers) and status (beginners, established, experienced). An analysis of differences between the respondents in regard to their background and status revealed a general agreement with the suitability of choosing their education/future profession, but it also showed that their choice was primarily guided by self-actualization and altruistic reasons. However, statistically significant differences were spotted in other reasons as well. Considering that inner motivational factors were the most common among all respondents, the authors deduce that the respondents represent a suitably chosen and educated population of current and future preschool teachers, which should ensure quality work with preschool children.

Development of basic competences in science and technology in minorities with language-independent computer simulations

Opis: With the growth of multimedia computers became more important than ever. Internet became linking media that connects people. But circumstances are far from being perfect. On one hand, we have circumstances similar to those in Eden, where students can use various didactical tools, and on the other, students are still left with the white chalk and black board. The main purpose of this article is to present the problem of accessibility of multimedia to users that have limited knowledge of foreign language (in most cases English). On the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics we developed interactive computer simulations of biological laboratory exercises. Simulations are equipped with translational support that enables users a translation into a chosen foreign language. The simulations Osmosis and Greenhouse effect are presented in this article and can be used by minorities in Slovenia as well as by anybody else who is not fluent in Slovenian language.

Understanding student's artworks according to the Scot Lash's post-modern Regime of signification

Opis: Something peculiar has happened at the 2005 semestrial students' exhibition at the department of Fine Art - Art Education program - at the University in Maribor. One of the artworks made by a group of students on the exhibition, which tried to refer to the late Asiatic tsunami disaster (The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake), was demolished by spontaneous art diversion performed by another group of students. Scandal emerged, demands for prosecutions followed. Some of the professors (a minority of us) tried to advocate the spontaneous students' artistic action. This paper starts with a short introduction of both students' artworks involved, presents the students' statement on their art diversion as well as includes a DVD (4 minutes) of the action. What is more, the theoretical bases for support of the students' art diversion are developed. We make use of the event to establish some basic aspects of contemporary art education. The modern and postmodern approaches toward cultural objects are compared, referring to the Scott Lash postmodern "Regime of signification" (1992). Than we refer to the bases of postmodern curriculum, to the ideas of Manfred Blohm (1995). The pedagogical necessity for stimulating spontaneous artistic responding among students is stressed. The simple response to the spontaneous artistic action of the students - to what we, the professors at the department where the event happened were obliged - became a strong advocacy and branched out to a theoretically based lecture which helps students to understand the contemporary art and to become more sensible of their own artistic and educational work.

The relation of lower grade primary school pupils to motif in visual art

Opis: From the motivational point of view, choosing motifs in art education is exceptionally important, as the motif represents the affective part of art education. Emotional response of pupils, both in the perception of artwork and in their own creations, represents an important factor in understanding and responding to art. The article presents the results of a survey which was conducted with the aim of establishing the popularity of different motifs in works of art. The survey was conducted among third-year primary school pupils and investigated which artwork the pupils liked the most and which were the motifs that drew their attention. We further investigated the effect that pupil gender had on these choices. The results have shown that there is a statistically significant gender-related difference in the choice of the motif, while there is less evidence of such a difference with regard to social stratum. The environment of the pupils is therefore irrelevant in the choice of the motif.
