1. Multicriteria evaluation of intermodal (rail/road) freight transport corridorsMilan Janić, 2020, original scientific article Abstract: This paper deals with the multi-criteria evaluation of the intermodal (rail/road) freight corridors as competing transport alternatives. For such a purpose, the methodology has been developed consisting of two main components; i) the analytical models for estimating the indicators and measures of the corridors’ physical/spatial or infrastructural, technical/technological, operational, economic, social, and environmental performance; and ii) the MCDM (Multi-Criteria Decision Making) method using the above-mentioned indicators and measures of performance as the evaluation attributes/criteria in ranking and identifying the preferred among the several mutually competing freight transport alternative corridors. The proposed methodology has been applied to two Trans-European intermodal rail/road freight transport corridors. As such, it has shown to be of use, in addition to the researchers, also to the other potential DMs (Decision Maker(s)). These could be, for example, the freight shippers/receivers as the users of the already existing intermodal (rail/road) transport services, the transport and intermodal terminal operators and infrastructure providers, and the business and policy makers facing with the problems of allocating the usually limited investments in the social-economic feasible way to the corresponding infrastructure at the local, regional, national, and international scale. Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international freight transport in Slovenia and EUMaja Rosi, Gabrijela Škrjanec, Bojan Rosi, 2023, published scientific conference contribution Abstract: The sudden emergence of COVID-19 and the declaration of a pandemic in the year 2020 has significantly impacted all factors of the economy, including international trade of goods. International freight transport (road, rail, air, and maritime) was also affected. The research analyses the changes in the implementation of international freight transport during the COVID-19 pandemic in EU countries. The main research question was: How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact international freight transport in Slovenia and selected EU member countries? According to the results, we can see that the pandemic outbreak had a different impact on each type of transport. Some modes of transport were more negatively affected by the pandemic than others. Estimating truck operating costs for domestic trips : case studies from GreeceEleftherios Sdoukopoulos, Maria Boile, Afroditi Anagnostopoulou, 2015, original scientific article Abstract: The transport sector represents a vital component of national economies and has significant impacts on productivity and social welfare. In 2012, the transport sector in Europe was estimated to account for 3.7% of the European Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 5.1% for employment. Road transport proves to be the predominant mode for moving goods within Europe holding a share of approximately 45.8% in 2012 (in ton-kms). In Greece, the share of road freight transport is significantly higher (98%) indicating the importance of this sector for the Greek economy. To this end and considering the existing needs of road freight transport operators in Greece, the objective of this research is to establish an analytical and documented basis for estimating the operating cost of a truck on specific urban or national freight transport routes. To achieve this goal, an extended literature review has been conducted resulting in the identification of the main components comprising the total truck operating cost, which were then updated and validated through a series of personal interviews with selected road freight transport professionals. An excel-based application tool was also developed in order to facilitate operating cost estimates for different cases, through selection of the proper values of the relevant parameters. The resulting tool was used to analyse four test cases, which demonstrate the tool’s usability and applicability. Results from this analysis have been also validated by industry experts and they reflect real-world transport scenarios. A framework for use in modelling the modal choice decision making process in North West England’s Atlantic GatewayAlan Bury, Dimitrios Paraskevadakis, Jun Ren, Farhan Saeed, 2017, original scientific article Abstract: The task of producing a generic model of the modal choice decision making process is a challenging one. Modal choice is strongly influenced by the infrastructure limitations and geographical constraints of the area in which the decision is being made. With this in mind, addressing modal choice on an individual basis for each region may be the optimal solution. This is the approach adopted in this paper. The creation of a modal choice model is a multistage process of which this paper addresses the first stage, the production a framework of the decision making process. Firstly, a number of criteria that are commonly used in modal choice models are identified. Then a number of gaps in the criteria utilized in previous papers are established. Subsequently, the method used to produce a framework of the decision making process within North West England’s Atlantic Gateway is outlined. Through consultation with transport industry experts in North West England, an initial list of sixty eight papers was reduced to thirty six that were considered to be of specific relevance to modern day freight transportation within their region. The criteria used in each of these papers were then, along with further industry input, used to create the foundation on which a modal choice framework specific to the Atlantic Gateway could be built. A greater understanding of what influences modal choice within this region will allow informed decisions to be made by policy makers on how to more efficiently utilize the available modes of freight transport. Having established this, future work can then go on to build upon these findings. This paper recommends that future work is performed to establish the weights of each criteria and sub-criteria within the framework. This should then be followed by establishing industry’s perceptions of the best and worst alternatives for moving freight within the Atlantic Gateway. 8. New feeder line rail freight paradigm for the European railwaysStanislav Božičnik, 2006, other scientific articles Abstract: The article deals with the development of the new paradigm of the European rail freight system predominantly suitable for the feeder lines (market niches). Taking into consideration the so far adopted legal solutions of the EU Commission for internationalisation (liberalisation) of the European railway system, the concept of the new rail freight model was developed in order to contribute to the increase of the quality, as well as to the growth of the volume of the rail freight services in Europe. Based on the findings about the disadvantages of the existing rail freight paradigm, the new solution consisting of the three interrelated and interconnected subsystems: institutional, technical/technological and organisational, is proposed. New liberalised access to the entire European rail infrastructure network will increase the competition and most probably attract new railway freight service providers. The introduction of the suggested innovative solutions in form of small, self-propelled, bi-directional train formation that can be automatically coupled and decoupled and equipped with the innovative loading and unloading equipment (enabling loading/unloading operations wherever the truck can stay parallel to the train), is to be expected predominantly on the feeder lines (market niches) of the European railways. 9. Freight transport innovations of European railways - new market chances and technological perspectivesStanislav Božičnik, Konrad Schliephake, 2005, review article Abstract: The paper analyses the main technical and economic elements of the current European rail freight market and presents the basic concepts of possible new technologies in the rail freight system. They would enable the railways to enter the more rewarding niches of the freight transport market. In an attempt to understand better the problems of introducing innovations into the transport sector this paper also considers the theoretical framework and analyses the implementation paths of the proposed technological innovations. New technologies are confronted with various barriers and difficulties created by the existing and dominant technological paradigms. These are often powerful enough to prevent the introduction of alternatives and promising innovations. The empirical part of the paper focuses on the possibilities of combining the existing innovative rail freight technologies which could, with the appropriate organizational solutions (time-tables) and political support, increase the competitiveness of the rail freight transport in new and promising market segments. The aim is to achieve the optimal reorganization of urban freight transport in old town core in the municipality of Celje. Optimal allocation relies on optimization based on the Monte Carlo simulation and represents a first stage of a two-stage optimization approach to re-design the existing urban freight transport. The number of optimal delivery positions is required to be as minimal as possible, which can still assure a maximal service area within the prescribed radius, while keeping the minimal walking distances of delivery personnel between the nearest delivery position and the customerʼs physical location. The main issues of the used heuristic allocation algorithm and the presentation of calculated results are provided. In the near future, the calculated delivery positions are going to be used for the purpose of physical implementation in order to improve the existing delivery transport.
