Children's right to privacy in the virtual world of apps
Suzana Kraljić, Ema Turnšek, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The world has become increasingly globalized, with the exchange of goods and services spanning continents, often leading to clashes between differently regulated legal systems. A prominent example of such a conflict arises in the context of digital health applications and the processing of personal data within them. Although in the sense of human rights, the rights to privacy and data protection are guaranteed to every person with numerous national and international legal acts, and secondary law and sectoral legislation that delves into this field. In Europe, personal health data are mainly regulated with GDPR, whereas in US the field is fragmented and regulated by sectoral regulations. The issue occurs when we deal with the protection of personal health data in the virtual world of health apps, which in the US remains in the grey zone without proper legal safeguards. US HIPAA, which governs personal health data at the federal level, does not protect all data provided to a health app, not even data provided to unlicensed counsel offering services through it.

Minimum age of criminal liability of children
Maša Kočivnik, Miha Šepec, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Accusing the perpetrator of criminal responsibility makes sense only if he understands the significance of his actions. Since it is a generally accepted fact that children are not capable of developing culpable responsibility until a certain age, practically every criminal law in the world sets an age limit up to which criminal responsibility cannot be attributed to a child. Until a certain age, the child is not mentally developed and mature enough to be able to understand the consequences of his behaviour, and thereby, he develops guilt in the criminal law sense, which deserves the criminal law repression of the state. The question remains, what should be the age up to which the child does not answer for committing a crime? In this chapter, the authors examine this question. At the same time, we wonder whether it is fair and just that a child who commits a serious crime, while being aware that his behaviour is evil (so he actually understands the consequences of his action), is not criminally responsible just because he has not yet reached the objectively set age in the Criminal Code.

Human capital efficiency and firm performance of quality-certified firms from EFQM excellence model : a dynamic panel data study
Muhammad Yousaf, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: The study’s main purpose is to investigate the impacts of human capital efficiency (HCE) on the firm performance of non-certified and quality-certified firms from the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Model. The study also examines the relationship between firm performance and quality-certificates from the European Foundation. Design/methodology/approach: By using a sample of 282 non-certified and 22 quality-certified firms from 2017 to 2021, the current study employed a two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation to analyse the empirical data. The dummy variable is used to examine the relationship between quality-certificates and firm performance. The dummy interaction term is employed to quantify the impacts of HCE on the firm’s performance for quality-certified firms. Findings: The results revealed that quality-certificates and firm performance have a positive relationship. Quality-certified firms perform better and earn more profits than non-certified firms. HCE has a positive impact on firm performance for both types of firms. Moreover, the quality-certified firms utilize HCE in an efficient way to earn more profits compared to the non-certified firms. Originality: This is the first study to use a comprehensive analysis to emphasize the HCE for non-certified and quality-certified firms separately. The effects of quality-certificates on firm performance in the context of HCE are also being highlighted for the first time in this research. Practical implications: The current study’s findings are fruitful for academics, managers, researchers, policymakers, and other firm management. The findings will encourage the management of the firms to implement the total quality management (TQM) approach within their firms.

Assessing taxpayers’ satisfaction with tax administration e-services
Lidija Hauptman, Nika Vetrih, Alenka Kavkler, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: As tax administrations worldwide modernize through digital technologies, it has become increasingly important to understand taxpayers’ satisfaction with these services. This research aims to estimate the relationships between satisfaction with tax administration e-services and factors such as trust, service quality, age, and gender, addressing a noted gap in the existing literature. Using the questionnaire distributed among taxpayers in Slovenia, four hypotheses were tested. Next to descriptive methods, Pearson correlation analysis, T-tests, and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used. The findings reveal a positive correlation between e-service quality and trust, as well as sustainability, but lower satisfaction with tax administration e-services among the younger generation. Gender differences do not exist, as male and female taxpayers are perceived to be equally satisfied with the e-service. The results suggest that improving tax information’s usability, clarity, and security increases taxpayers’ confidence and satisfaction. Quality information does not cause confusion and distrust. From the taxpayers’ perspective, it is essential to ensure accessible, easy-to-understand information and implement quick feedback mechanisms to enhance clarity and strengthen taxpayers’ trust.

Evaluation of an integrated programme of physical exercise with nursey-aged children : impact on motor achievements
Vilko Petrić, Lucija Kostadin, Mirela Peić, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The aim was to determine if there is a possibility of conducting an integrated programme of physical exercise with nursery-aged children, as well as to evaluate its impact on their motor achievement. The sample consisted of nursery-aged children. The sample of variables comprises four tests for evaluating motor achievement based on the various movement structures that allow mastery of space, obstacles and resistance, as well as the manipulation of objects. The differences between the experimental and control groups were tested with Student’s t-test. The results show that these programmes yielded exceptional results with regard to motor achievement.

Effect of gonadotropin administration on reproductive performance in relation to the age at first conception, time of application, and body condition of weaned sow
Marija Vogrin Bračič, Maja Prevolnik Povše, Janko Skok, Dejan Škorjanc, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The administration of hormone preparations to synchronize the onset of oestrus in gilts and sows is a good way of achieving breeding objectives economically on large-scale farms. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyse the effects of the timing of administration of gonadotropins (400 IU (international unit) eCG – equine chorionic gonadotropin – and 200 IU hCG – human chorionic gonadotropin; Intervet International B.V.), the age of gilts at first conception, and their backfat thickness (BFT) at weaning on the length of weaning to oestrus interval (WEI) and litter size in the following four parities. A total of 578 crossbred sows (Landrace×Large White) from a commercial farm were divided into three groups: the control PG0 (without gonadotropins, n=192), PG72 (gonadotropin administration 72 h before weaning, n=192), and PG24 (gonadotropin administration 24 h after weaning, n=194). Within each group, gilts were also divided into two classes according to their age at first conception: 240–260 d and >260 d. Body condition of sows was determined based on BFT, measured on the 110th day of gestation and at weaning on the 28th day of lactation, which were classified into four classes of body condition within each reproduction cycle. Primiparous sows that were younger at first conception (240–260 d and BFT >14.3 mm at weaning) had a significantly shorter WEI but only at first weaning. At the subsequent farrows, age at first conception had no significant effect on WEI length. With subsequent farrows, increasing BFT along with gonadotropin administration (72 h before and 24 h after weaning) had a significant effect on reducing WEI. Age at first conception (240–260 d) of the primiparous sow with both gonadotropin administrations significantly increased the number of live-born piglets in all parities studied in comparison to the older group (>260 d). In conclusion, the study showed that it is necessary to adjust the selective timing of gonadotropin administration at weaning to the age of primiparous sows and their body condition.

The correlation between demographic development and land-use changes in Slovenia
Uroš Horvat, Igor Žiberna, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper focuses on determining the degree of correlation between land-use changes and demographic development in Slovenia. The authors conclude that there is still insufficient evidence in the literature for a correlation between these two processes, because quantitative studies addressing these links are very rare and mostly cover small and specific areas. In the case of Slovenia, Spearman’s correlation coefficients are quite low, which confirms that land-use change processes are complex and not dependent solely on individual demographic and socioeconomic factors. Despite the low correlation coefficients, our findings indicate that changes in land use are significantly influenced by changes in age structure and population growth. In areas with population growth the share of arable land is shrinking, whereas in areas with depopulation and a rising aging index the share of partially overgrown land is growing. In the following analysis, the authors focus their analysis on a case study of the Mura and Central Slovenia statistical regions, which lie on opposite poles with regard to development, and thus show differing trends in land-use changes.

Quality of life and health status in middle-aged presumed healthy Slovenian family practice attendees
Matic Tement, Polona Selič-Zupančič, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: There is a gap in our knowledge of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a population presumed healthy, so this study aimed to assess the associations between HRQoL, demographics and clinical variables. Methods: The participants were attendees, presumed healthy, at 40 pre-selected model family medicine practices (MFMPs), aged between 30 and 65 years and recruited during a preventive check-up in 2019. Each MFMP pragmatically invited 30 attendees to voluntarily participate. The EQ-5D questionnaire was administered as a measure of HRQoL; the independent variables were demographic characteristics, smoking, alcohol consumption, stress perception, physical activity, signs of depression, cardiovascular risk, body mass index, blood pressure values, and blood sugar and lipidogram laboratory test values. Ordinal logistic regression was used to calculate associations between self-assessed quality of life, demographics, and clinical variables, with P<0.05 set as statistically significant. Results: Of 986 participants, 640 (64.9%) were women and 346 (35.1%) men, aged 42.7+-8.6 years. The average values for the EQ-5D-3L were 0.9+1-0.15. In the multivariate model, a positive association between adequate physical activity (p=0.003), and a negative association between higher age (p<0.001), female gender (p=0.009), signs of depression (p<0.001), stress (p=0.013), and EQ-5D score were identified. Conclusion: Given that physical activity was shown to be positively associated with HRQoL, it is of the utmost importance for family physicians to motivate their middle-aged patients, especially women and those with signs of depression and excessive stress, to adopt a more rigorously physically active lifestyle.

Promoting sustainable development while building upon components of reading literacy
Barbara Bednjički Rošer, Dragica Haramija, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The paper sheds light on the evaluation of books for pre-school children and the theory of reading children’s literature while bearing in mind the various components of reading literacy. Like reading literacy, education on sustainability is also a life-long process, and for understanding the concept of sustainability and the role of the individual in its implementation, which begins to form in the pre-school period, we chose the work by Adèle Tariel and Julie de Terssac 1000 Cows (French original: 1000 vaches), which indicates that illustrations affect the comprehension of the story and (at least partially) change or present more clearly the key morphological characteristics of the text. We conducted a case study in which we included part-time students from the third year of Early Childhood Education Studies (n = 13). An analysis of the content of responses was carried out. These demonstrate a broad semantic field of understanding literary-artistic reading and represent an example of interdisciplinary integration that can significantly contribute to the development of components of reading literacy as well as a sustainable future.
