Serious vs. Satire – Today’s Future as Depicted in the World-Building Elements of Blade Runner and Futurama

Abstract: This thesis explores the world-building elements in the Blade Runner movies (Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049) and the TV series Futurama. The theoretical framework presents the terminology related to the titles’ and their world-building elements: science fiction and speculative fiction, dystopia and cyberpunk, satire and parody. Lastly, the concept of world-building is presented and the framework of the elements that are analyzed is defined. The world-building elements of the worlds of Blade Runner and Futurama are divided into the cultural and physical. The cultural elements are then further divided into: society and social issues, language, and science and technology. The physical are planet and climate, and the cityscape. This part of the thesis is a comparative analysis of the elements. It focuses on how the elements are presented in their respective worlds and compares them to each other and how they might relate to our own reality today and in the future. The comparative analysis shows how the satirical Futurama and serious, cyberpunk Blade Runner ‘predict’ future realities. Those are at the same time alternate and akin to our own.

Uporaba funkcije 'World Zone' v programu RobotStudio

Abstract: Diplomsko delo zajema predstavitev programske funkcije WorldZone v programskem okolju RobotStudio. Pri tem smo preučili osnovno zamisel programske funkcije ter si podrobno pogledali programiranje funkcije. Med samim postopkom preučevanja smo spoznali, da lahko funkcijo uporabimo v varnostne namene, ter smo jo uporabili v našem zamišljenem primeru. Prav tako smo ob programiranju robotskega programa bolj podrobno spoznali programski jezik RAPID, ter smo napisali navodila za uporabo programskega okolja RobotStudio ter navodila za programiranje RAPID-a.

The Ebola epidemic and cholera outbreak and the international response

Abstract: Infectious diseases are responsible for 15 million of the 57 million deaths worldwide despite the remarkable discoveries of antibiotics and vaccines. Many individuals succumb to microbial diseases in poor and less-developed countries where these preventive and therapeutic modalities are not available. Furthermore these less fortunate countries do not have the resources or public health infrastructure to combat unforeseen and explosive outbreaks. Two relatively recent outbreaks are reviewed in this article; the Ebola epidemic in West Africa and the cholera outbreak in Haiti. This outbreak of cholera, in a country of only 7.8 million inhabitants, is one of the largest ever recorded worldwide. Early intervention by international health organizations is critical to curtail and ultimately control infectious disease outbreaks and epidemics. This responsibility, especially for less-developed countries, lies in the hands of the United Nations and World Health Organization. Unfortunately, the international response from the UN and WHO was slow, cumbersome and poorly coordinated both in West Africa and Haiti.

The evaluation of the role of teaching aids in stimulating pupils' activation in geography

Abstract: This paper discusses the methodological procedures of application of teaching aids through the subjects: World around us, Nature and Society and Geography, as well as an adequate choice of teaching resources that encourage students to earn a permanent knowledge. The idea is to use teaching aids in active teaching and to turn it into the practical use of the material, in order to efficiently adopt the fundamental knowledge about the nature of science in the classroom teaching. The procedures are identified, which are especially important from the point of maximum achievements in teaching the use of teaching aids, and especially significant for subjects the World around us, Nature and Society and Geography. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of teaching aids in active teaching, as well as whether the student becomes mentally active participant in the educational process using teaching aids. The study involved class teachers (154) who evaluated the importance of teaching resources for permanent adoption of knowledge of students. In addition, the survey was analyzed and different types of learning resources in terms of their values in the activation of thinking in students were analyzed as well. This survey has confirmed the hypothesis about the importance of teaching aids for thoughtful activation of the students.

Fragmented Romanian sociology: growth and structure of the collaboration network

Abstract: Structural patterns in collaboration networks are essential for understanding how new ideas, research practices, innovation or cooperation circulate and develop within academic communities and between and within university departments. In our research, we explore and investigate the structure of the collaboration network formed by the academics working full-time within all the 17 sociology departments across Romania. We show that the collaboration network is sparse and fragmented, and that it constitutes an environment that does not promote the circulation of new ideas and innovation within the field. Although recent years have witnessed an increase in the productivity of Romanian sociologists, there is still ample room for improvement in terms of the interaction infrastructure that ought to link individuals together so that they could maximize their potentials. We also fail to discern evidence in favor of the Matthew effect governing the growth of the network, which suggests scientific success and productivity are not rewarded. Instead, the structural properties of the collaboration network are partly those of a core-periphery network, where the spread of innovation and change can be explained by structural equivalence rather than by interpersonal influence models. We also provide support for the idea that, within the observed network, collaboration is the product of homophily rather than prestige effects. Further research on the subject based on data from other countries in the region is needed to place our results in a comparative framework, in particular to discern whether the behavior of the Romanian sociologist community is unique or rather common.

Modeling the seasonal adaptation of circadian clocks by changes in the network structure of the suprachiasmatic nucleus

Abstract: The dynamics of circadian rhythms needs to be adapted to day length changes between summer and winter. It has been observed experimentally, however, that the dynamics of individual neurons of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) does not change as the seasons change. Rather, the seasonal adaptation of the circadian clock is hypothesized to be a consequence of changes in the intercellular dynamics, which leads to a phase distribution of electrical activity of SCN neurons that is narrower in winter and broader during summer. Yet to understand this complex intercellular dynamics, a more thorough understanding of the impact of the network structure formed by the SCN neurons is needed. To that effect, we propose a mathematical model for the dynamics of the SCN neuronal architecture in which the structure of the network plays a pivotal role. Using our model we show that the fraction of long-range cell-to-cell connections and the seasonal changes in the daily rhythms may be tightly related. In particular, simulations of the proposed mathematical model indicate that the fraction of long-range connections between the cells adjusts the phase distribution and consequently the length of the behavioral activity as follows: dense long-range connections during winter lead to a narrow activity phase, while rare long-range connections during summer lead to a broad activity phase. Our model is also able to account for the experimental observations indicating a larger light-induced phase-shift of the circadian clock during winter, which we show to be a consequence of higher synchronization between neurons. Our model thus provides evidence that the variations in the seasonal dynamics of circadian clocks can in part also be understood and regulated by the plasticity of the SCN network structure.

Andrejka Šerbec, 2015, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: My graduation thesis focuses on four novels: Burger`s Daughter, July`s People, The World of Strangers and The Late Bourgeois World, written by Nadine Gordimer. In her novels she used point of view to signal her opposition to apartheid. Nadine Gordimer is a white author who lived in South Africa during the years when the policy of apartheid was very much alive. The novels were published between 1958 and1981. The time setting of all novels is during the apartheid, which plays a significant role in the lives and fates of the characters. These literary works present what it was like living under apartheid and the terrible consequences of it for black South Africans, but mostly for white people who wanted to make their contribution in the anti-apartheid struggle. Her anti-apartheid point of view is reflected through various themes. The main characters in her novels are whites, male and female, who strongly disagree with the institution of apartheid and want to overthrow it, but at the same time she shows the sufferings of exploited black people. She mentions many historical events that took place in South Africa, but she focuses on the lives and emotions of the protagonists and the relationships between them, and she builds a work of literature over historical details. Her literary works provide a mirror through which the people of South Africa in the decades of apartheid could view themselves. Through her characters the whole historical process is crystallized.
