The human capital of the freelancers and their satisfaction with the quality of life
Ivona Huđek, Polona Tominc, Karin Širec, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Digital technologies are underpinning a wide range of products, services, processes, and business model innovations that are significantly transforming industries, organizations, and society. They are increasingly permeating every aspect of our daily lives. In this paper, we looked at the challenges of digitalization, leading to a new way of working in the market and new business models, such as the gig economy. Individuals are becoming more mobile and self-directed in their careers, as opposed to traditional careers. We investigated the demographic characteristics of the new, growing group of self-employed, so-called freelancers, at the national level in Slovenia and investigated the relationships between human capital and their subjective (job and career satisfaction, life satisfaction) and objective success (income satisfaction). The survey was conducted among 200 freelancers (respondents). The empirical results show that most Slovenian freelancers working from home work in professional, scientific, and technical occupations; are between 35 and 44 years old; have completed the second level of tertiary education; work more than 40 hours per week; and have 16 years or more of work experience. To explore the quality of life of freelancers, empirical analysis showed that human capital factors are important for the success of a new career as a freelancer. The results show that freelancers’ human capital factors (education and experience, skills, and training) positively influence subjective and objective success. Using structural equation modeling, we also confirmed that human capital has a greater impact on freelancers’ subjective success (life satisfaction, career satisfaction) than on objective success (income satisfaction), suggesting that job and life satisfaction should be considered an important resource that freelancers rely on to determine their quality of life.

Enhancing the performance of high-growth small- and medium-sized enterprises through effective project- management processes and stakeholder engagement : a systems perspective
Igor Vrečko, Polona Tominc, Karin Širec, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study examines the impact of project management practices on high-growth Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (HG SMEs) from a systems perspective, utilizing Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) and data from a diverse SME sample. It investigates the intricate relationships among project management system support, project management processes, stakeholder involvement, project management success, project success, and HG SME growth. Our findings highlight the substantial positive influence of project management processes and stakeholder engagement on project management success. These factors subsequently contribute significantly to both project success and the overall growth of HG SMEs. Notably, project management system support does not exhibit a substantial influence on these success factors. Furthermore, our research uncovers important indirect effects. Project management processes indirectly impact both project success and HG SME growth, underscoring their central role. Similarly, stakeholder involvement indirectly influences HG SME growth through its impact on project success, emphasizing its significance. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by emphasizing the critical roles of project management processes, stakeholder engagement, and project success as drivers of SME growth. These insights have valuable implications for SME managers, project leaders, and policymakers, highlighting the essential nature of effective project management in shaping the growth trajectory of SMEs.

The emergence of gig economy under the impact of digitalization - model of the success factors of freelancers
Ivona Huđek, 2022, doktorska disertacija

Opis: This dissertation examines the emergence of the gig economy under the impact of digitalisation, focusing on one alternative form of work – freelancing. Over the past two decades, new and contemporary occupational concepts have emerged in the context of technological advances and the reorganisation of employment relationships in the wake of digitalisation. Technology has enabled many things to be done online or remotely, and for work to be broken down into smaller components in the form of projects. Scholars explain that the most important innovations influenced by digitalisation are the development of new business models characterised by less dependence on physical elements or dematerialisation of processes, as seen in the “gig economy”. In the gig economy, very short-term tasks or projects within specific activities are performed by individual self-employed workers, usually coordinated through online platforms or applications. As a result, many workers are able to complete tasks in a more efficient and fragmented manner. Unlike traditional careers characterised by hierarchical advancement, organisational career management, and low mobility, many individuals are also becoming more mobile and self-directed in their careers. As a result of these developments, new work arrangements have emerged that are taking up an increasingly large share of the labour market in major economies (such as the US and UK), heightening concerns about how workers are classified and raising questions about entrepreneurship, future career development, work-life balance, employment law frameworks, and social protections. These flexible work arrangements are often referred to as alternative and are performed by independent contractors, known as freelancers. Therefore, the dissertation was carried out to examine this alternative form of work at the national level in Slovenia, and explore the issue of career satisfaction, and specifically whether freelance work allows fulfilment through project work. In this dissertation, a freelancer refers to a self-employed individual without employees who is responsible for paying their own taxes and welfare contributions, works on projects for multiple clients, and works remotely, usually from home. The development of the research model for the purposes of this dissertation is based on Van den Born and Van Witteloostuijn’s (2013) freelancer success model, which is based on the intelligent career framework that consists of three interrelated variables: knowing why, knowing how, and knowing who. The ‘knowing why’ variable mainly reflects our personality traits and motivation. The ‘knowing how’ variable reflects human capital, while the ‘knowing who’ variable reflects social capital inside and outside the workplace (Parker & Arthur, 2004). However, the external environment is missing in this model. Therefore, the dissertation also included the external part, i.e. the external environment consisting of the characteristics of the entrepreneurial ecosystem: government programs, cultural and social norms, legal system support, and digital support. As Slovenia and other EU member states are implementing national strategies for digital transformation, this dissertation provides insight into freelancers in Slovenia and their perceptions of certain aspects of external environmental factors, which may be helpful in evaluating current digital strategies and future policy proposals and decisions. Therefore, the main objective of the dissertation was to test a conceptual model that links multidimensional variables that influence the perceived success of freelancers based on a review of the literature and empirical research, and thus to learn certain specific characteristics of the group of entrepreneurial, self-employed individuals known as freelancers, and to determine the extent to which personality traits, human and social capital, and motivation of the individual, as well as a supportive environment (entrepreneurial ecosystem),

Začetki kadrovskih informacijskih sistemov so bili v opravljanju nalog tradicionalne plati. Ob razvoju informacijske tehnologije pa so ponudniki kadrovskih informacijskih sistemov razvili tudi strateško plat kadrovske funkcije. Kadrovski informacijski sistemi so sredstvo za pridobivanje, shranjevanje, analiziranje in posredovanje informacij različnim uporabnikom. Običajno obsegajo ohranjanje zaposlenih, zaposlovanje, upravljanje z zaposlenimi, upravljanje plačilnega prometa, načrtovanje kadrovskih virov, upravljanje z izobraževanji, spremljanje uspešnosti, samoupravljanje zaposlenih, načrtovanje, upravljanje odsotnosti, analitiko, prerazporeditve zaposlenih in drugo.

The impact of socially responsible reporting on successful corporate operations
Anton Peršič, Mirko Markič, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The aim of our research was to study the impact and purpose of the reporting on socially responsible conduct on the success of corporate operations. The data and information were gathered with the quantitative research method, whereas the instrument for gathering them was a questionnaire that was distributed among 759 large and medium sized organisations from the field of market services in the Republic of Slovenia. We have established that activities aimed at socially responsible conduct are directly connected with the success of corporate operations, especially the revenue (p = 0.001), the profit of a company (p = 0.000), operational growth (p = 0.007) and operational economy (p = 0.002), and are typical for organizations with a larger number of employees (p = 0.032). In this regard, the real estate and construction market activities received the lowest scores. Research results provide theoretical as well as practical benefits for everyone dealing with the planning, implementation and control of sustainable development, as well as socially responsible conduct within the organization.

The impact of managers on successful ERP implementation
Franc Ravnikar, 2010, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Lately, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has been implemented in public organizations and organizations without competition in the marketplace. It is the ERP system that is almost as badly needed for the competitiveness and success of those organizations in the marketplace. The main reason lies in the fact that operating costs have to be reduced and the optimization of business processes is an option which nowadays is normally implemented together with new ERP. The success rate of ERP implementation remains very low with up to a 90% failure rate, as it is quoted in a lot of researches. Critical success factors (CSF) which influence successful ERP implementation are identical in all organizations. The main goal of this research is to find out the managers' impact on the critical success factors and thus their impact on the successful ERP implementation. Top management support is the most important critical success factor for successful ERP implementation, regardless of the fact whether the organization is on the market or not.

A review of critical success factors for offshore software development projects
Goparaju Purna Sudhakar, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Offshore project success is very much important to both customer and the vendor. Based on very less success rate of overall software projects globally, critical success factors (CSFs) for offshore software projects is gaining much importance. In the current study based on literature review, a total of 75 success factors for offshore software projects are identified. Further based on their appearance in literature 20 critical success factors from 10 CSF categories are identified. Finally top six most critical success factors for offshore software projects such as trust, efficient communication, cultural understanding, relationship between client and vendor, contract type and efficient knowledge transfer are identified. The CSFs categories are prioritized in the order of importance. The important CSF categories for offshore projects found are organizational factors (both client and vendor), project factors, cultural factors and environmental factors.

Household accounting - a case of subsidised self-employed entrepreneurs in Slovenia
Damjana Rant, Robert Horvat, Polona Tominc, Bojana Korošec, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents the results of the first empirical study of household accounting in Slovenia, which was conducted on a sample of households of subsidised self-employed entrepreneurs. Based on an original measurement of the levels of household accounting, this study presents the scope of different accounting components in these households. Further, it gives the results of the comparison between those subsidised self-employed entrepreneurs who managed to keep their business and those who failed to do so. The comparison of the results showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups of entrepreneurs only in terms of the scope of monitoring of household costs and expenditures.

Social presence and interaction in learning environments : the effect on student success
Ines Kožuh, Zoran Jeremić, Andrej Sarjaš, Julija Lapuh Bele, Vladan Devedžić, Matjaž Debevc, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: With the increased use of social media there is a growing interest in using social interaction and social presence in education. Despite this phenomenon, no appropriate methodology was found on effective integrating of both concepts into online learning. In this study, we propose integrating two different kinds of learning tools to provide social interaction and social presence in Personal Learning Environments. We have evaluated the proposed concept in a classroom setting, using a specific social interaction tool and a specific social presence tool. The findings revealed that although the use of the social interaction tool was positively associated with students% academic success, the perceived ease of using the social presence tool was negatively related to students' success.

Increased augmentation index and central systolic arterial pressure are associated with lower school and motor performance in young adolescents
Bernarda Vogrin, Marjan Rupnik, Dušanka Mičetić-Turk, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Objective: In adults, improper arterial function has been linked to cognitive impairment. The pulse wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index (AIx) and other vascular parameters are useful indicators of arterial health. In our study, we monitored arterial properties, body constitution, school success, and motor skills in young adolescents. We hypothesize that reduced cognitive and motor abilities have a vascular origin in children. Methods: We analysed 81 healthy school children aged 11-16 years. Anthropometry central systolic arterial pressure, body mass index (BMI), standard deviation scores (SDS) BMI, general school performance grade, and eight motor tests were assessed. PWV, AIx, and central systolic arterial pressure (SBPao) were measured. Results: AIx and SBPao correlated negatively with school performance grades. Extremely high AIx, PWVand SBPao values were observed in 5% of children and these children had average to low school performance. PWV correlated significantly with weight, height, and waist and hip circumference. AIx, PWV, school success, and BMI correlated strongly with certain motor functions. Conclusions: Increased AIx and SBPao are associated with lower school and motor performance in children. PWV is influenced by the body's constitution.
