Ljubljana-Leoben graph theory seminar

Opis: The booklet contains the abstracts of the talks given at the 30th Ljubljana-Leoben Graph Theory Seminar that was held at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Maribor between 13-15 September, 2017. The seminar attracted more than 30 participants from eight countries, all of which are researchers in different areas of graph theory. The topics of the talks encompass a wide range of contemporary graph theory research, notably, various types of graph colorings (b-coloring, packing coloring, edge colorings), graph domination (rainbow domination, Grundy domination, graph security), distinguishing problems, algebraic graph theory, graph algorithms, chemical graph theory, coverings, matchings and also some classical extremal problems. Beside the abstracts of the four invited speakers (Csilla Bujtás, Premysl Holub, Jakub Przybyło, Zsolt Tuza), the booklet contains also the abstracts of 18 contributed talks given at the event.

Apacer: a six-step model for the introduction of computer-supported laboratory exercises in biology teaching

Opis: This article describes a six-step approach used for the introduction of computer-supported laboratory exercises in Biology teaching. Following the model students will be guided from recognizing a problem question to the end report in a series of active tasks. The model was named APACER as an acronym of the six steps: Ask, Predict, Act, Comment, Evaluate and Report. The model was tested with 15-18-year-old secondary school students as group and individual work over a time span of ten years and several hundred students performing laboratory exercises in Biology. Work on development of the model can be described as reflective classroom practice. By observation of students' work, grading of their reports and evaluation of results from exams, it was recognized that students achieved much higher grades because of better knowledge and improved reports. Transfer of the model to other Science subjects is suggested.

Future teachers' opinions on the digital competencies obtained during their studies

Opis: Different information and communication technologies have become part of the necessary competencies, as teachers are educators of the web generation, which is characterised by its members using the computer in each aspect of their lives. The use of the computer is specific for each individual field of teaching and as such cannot be directly compared. This article presents the results of a survey into how the field of study influences the use of ICT and the computer in future teachers. The participants in this study were 252 forth-year students from three faculties from University of Maribor, which educate future teachers: Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education. Our research has shown that students of natural, technical and computer science provided the most positive feedback about the availability of computers at the faculty, their performance, software, internet access at the faculty and internet access in their town of study. Future teachers expressed a more positive opinion on statements relating to the necessity of using the computer in class than on statements relating to their competencies for using the computer in class.

Language-independent virtual biology exercise for the development of key competences for lifelong learning

Opis: Natural sciences in Slovenia are not as popular as we would like them to be. Biology teaching and learning in great part consist of memorizing the facts and not so much of developing competences. Laboratory and field work are recognized as methods where students can achieve subject specific and generic competences, as recommended by different international organizations. Such key competences are mathematical competence and competences in science and technology, and digital competences. Although competences cannot be learned but have to be achieved, the task seems epical when students can hardly find computer supported didactical tools in their own language. On the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics virtual biology exercise Mendelian Genetics with a translational tool was developed. Teachers have the possibility to translate it into desired foreign language. Virtual exercise is interactive and encourages the critical thinking approach to reach the high level cognitive skills and development of different competences.

Organizational and managerial challenges of reforming Slovenian public agencies

Opis: Introduction: Agencies are among the key contemporary public organizations, prospering within reforms carried out worldwide to increase professionalism and rationalism in public administration (PA). Hence, countries have been establishing agencies and delegating them public tasks in order to achieve expertise-based instead of politically-driven and thus more efficient public policies. In such context, the present article addresses the most important strategic documents related to public administration reform (PAR) in Slovenia, analyzing their goals in terms of agencification and the main implementation results and gaps. Research Design: The research is dedicated to exploring the governmental approach to agencification as a key aspect of PAR. It analyzes (1) the main PAR strategic documents on public agencies in Slovenia since the mid-90s, and (2) the perceived implementation of structural and managerial autonomy as the declared goal of agencification. Combined research methods are applied, including descriptive analysis, regional comparisons, structural interviews among representatives of public agencies and their parent ministries, and selected statistical data analysis. Results: As proven by different research methods, the hypothesis whereby agencification goals in Slovenia are largely achieved as part of PAR documents in terms of autonomous organizational structure was confirmed. A more elaborated agencification in PAR documents relates to higher implementation of autonomy. Conclusion: Nevertheless, the professionalism of Slovenian agencies is still an on-going process, particularly as regards the efficiency implementation gap. As for the future, a more consistent PAR incorporating cross-sectoral policy on agencies is required to pursue the development of a democratic and efficient PA.

Providing the success of Six Sigma by proper project identification and selection

Opis: Results of Six Sigma projects are related to company performance. Successful Six Sigma projects increase customer satisfaction and have many other positive effects on organisations. Success of Six Sigma projects is related to key management decision about how to identify potential projects and which projects to select for final implementation. This research is oriented toward the study of tools used in the phase of Six Sigma project identification and criteria used in the phase of Six Sigma project selection. The purpose of this research is to compare results from manufacturing sector in Slovenia and the UK. Results of this study indicate that management within the organisations tend to identify potential Six Sigma projects with the use of different tools, such as: brainstorming (Slovenia and UK.), followed by Critical To Quality tree (UK.), and interviews and customer visits (Slovenia). Further, the results show that the final decision about Six Sigma projects selection in the UK and Slovenia include different criteria, such as: customer benefit (Slovenia and UK), finance impact (UK) and connection to business strategy (Slovenia). Many companies in the UK as well in Slovenia combine the use of tools and balanced selection criteria at the same time.

Psychosocial factors in the development of low back pain among professional drivers

Opis: Background and purpose: Professional drivers as a group are exposed to high risk of developing low back pain due to ergonomic factors and work conditions. The purpose of the study was to examine to what extent the low back pain occurs among Slovene professional drivers as a result of the development of various psychosocial factors. Methodology: The study involved 275 respondents (professional bus drivers, car/van drivers, international truck/ lorry drivers, and ambulance car drivers). Hypotheses were tested using multivariate statistical method (regression analysis) and analysis of variance. Data were collected by structured questionnaire comprised of three parts: socio-demographic data, basic psychosocial factors causing low back pain, and incidence, duration and severity of low back pain as a result of psychosocial risk factors, was implemented. Results: The results of quantitative survey suggest that low back pain is mostly caused by lifting and carrying heavy loads, inadequate working conditions, poor physical fitness, regular nights out, shift work, and stress. Only the impact of gender on low back pain distress among professional drivers was confirmed, predominantly among bus drivers and lorry drivers on international routes. Low back pain occurrence was less common, albeit not statistically significant, among professional drivers of vans and passenger cars. Conclusion: Our study suggests that psychosocial factors are also important cause for the development of low back pain among professional drivers and can limit the quality of their social and professional lives.

Selection criteria for six sigma projects in Slovenian manufacturing companies

Opis: Researches reveal that successful six sigma implementation is related to proper six sigma project prioritisation and selection. This research is limited to the selection of six sigma projects in some manufacturing companies in Slovenia. The purpose of this study is to identify what criteria are considered for prioritisation and selection of six sigma projects and how six sigma projects are selected. A research sample is limited by the number of companies which have implemented six sigma so far. The results indicate that Slovenian manufacturing organisations tend to select six sigma projects based on criteria such as customer satisfaction, connection with a business strategy financial benefits, and growth of the organisation. Several tools and techniques such as quality cost analysis, brainstorming and interviews are used to identify and prioritise projects. Identification of the most commonly used criteria to select six sigma projects can help practitioners to select projects based on multiple criteria by using tools and techniques identified in this study. This topic has not been applied in the field of Slovenian manufacturing companies and thus it presents the first study in this field in Slovenia.

Social classes and social mobility in Slovenia and Europe

Opis: In closed social systems the social position of an individual is determined by the social position of the family into which he or she was born, whereas in open social systems mobility from one social class to another is possible. This paper concerns the relationship between the class position an individual actually occupies and the class into which he or she was born. First the concept of social class is described and different types of social mobility are presented. Than the research methodology is described and the results are presented and discussed. At the end of the paper certain comparisons to other European countries are made.

Technological, marketing and complementary competencies driving innovative performance of Slovenian manufacturing firms

Opis: The paper discusses innovative performance of firms and underlying competencies, namely technological, marketing and complementary. Competencies are regarded as networks of various capabilities and other firm assets and can be used for cross-industry comparisons. The study is based on a survey carried out among 50 established Slovenian manufacturing companies addressing competencies which they employ in their 65 distinct product lines. Three distinct segments of firms are established based on innovative performance indicators. Used are techniques of multivariate statistics, including cluster analysis and analysis of variance. The results imply that the most innovative firms simultaneously develop technological, marketing and complementary competencies. The implications of our findings are valuable to the firms aligning their competencies with their strategy, as well as to policy makers in technology following countries.
