41. Involvement in sports clubs and informal sport activities of primary and secondary school children in LiechtensteinJürgen Kühnis, Beat Wachter, Christian Frommelt, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Sport involvement among children and adolescents has been a central field of research in sport science since years. This paper documents the participation of 11- to 15-year-olds in sport clubs and informal sport activities in Liechtenstein and examines possible gender- and age-specific differences. The analysis is based on four cross-sectional studies from 2004 to 2015 and includes the data of 1262 children in primary (5th grade) and secondary (7th and 9th grades) school. According to our findings sports and exercise are considered to be one of the main leisure-time activities for all school levels (irrespective of gender). The percentage of fully sport-abstinent adolescents by 11- and 13-year-olds is about 5 %; by 15-year-olds is around 10 %. The culmination of sports club membership (with current 84.7 %) appears to be at the age of 11 (5th grade). After the switch to secondary school the sports club commitment tends to decrease, while the high attendance of the informal sport activities (>85 %) shows relatively stable age development. In contrast to other child and youth studies, our data indicates a levelling tendency and dissolution of classic gender differences not only in sports club commitment but also in informal sports among girls and boys. 42. Findings of visual arts research in early childhood and primary educationMarijana Županić Benić, 2016, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Arts research was introduced in the field of education during the 1990s by Barone and Eisner, but their methodology is rarely used because it is not considered to be consistent with traditional paradigms of the scientific method. This review identified only seven visual arts research studies in early childhood education and primary education. Four studies were conducted in early childhood education settings, and two of those studies used quantitative methods to investigate the effects of art on early childhood development. The three studies that were conducted in primary education used a case study approach to examine art projects in the community or the classroom. Participation in visual arts was associated with enhanced learning outcomes in other areas and the development of individual and social competences, but it was not found to facilitate the development of age-dependent abilities, such as visual or grapho-motor abilities. Visual arts also proved to be an effective method of communication for children in preschool and primary education institutions because it is easier for them to express their opinions and beliefs to adults with visual media than with words. 43. Discussions on school reform - a long way to the unification of schools for 10 to 14-year-oldsRenate Seebauer, 2009, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: The beginning of the article presents a retrospect of the discussion of unifying schools in Austria with arguments for and against them. In the 2008/09 school year a few selected Austrian regions started experimental school models in an attempt to unify their school system at the level of ten to fourteen-year-old pupils. More schools will start similar experiments a year later. Particularism — mainly politically motivated — has become evident: Nine regions, nine concepts. The fact that a new school organization will need teachers that have been educated in line with the new pedagogical concepts has been discussed sporadically. It remains neglected, however, in the overall concept of educational reform — at least in current public discussions. 44. Coordination of school science classroom furnishings with anthropometric parameters for 11-12 year-old childrenNataša Rizman Herga, Samo Fošnarič, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The aim of the research was to explore the size suitability of school furnishings with the help of anthropometric measurements established on 11-12 year-old pupils. These pupils who have switched from single classroom teaching to teaching by subject and have lessons in specialized classrooms that are designed for a specific school subject. We were interested in the discrepancies between pupils' anthropometric dimensions and the size of school furniture in science classrooms. The study included 192 pupils (N=192) in the 6th and 7th grades of primary schools in North-Eastern Slovenia. Readings were made of the pupils' anthropometric dimensions, including stature, popliteal height, buttock-popliteal length, elbow height sitting, thigh thickness, subscapular height and hip width. Measurements of the school furniture showed that the dimensions of desks designed according to ISO 5970 correspond to a size 6 (for those between 173 and 184 cm tall). Results of the anthropometric measurements have shown that 6th grade pupils are on average 152 cm tall, 7th grade pupils 160 cm. The research thus indicated a serious mismatch between school furnishings and the anthropometric dimensions, an issue which can have serious consequences for pupils' development. 45. A child and the art in the first and the second grade of the primary schoolDubravka Kuščević, Marija Brajčić, Ivana Matijašević, 2009, drugi znanstveni članki Opis: The nature of the relation between the art and art teaching is dialectical. Art teaching is unthinkable and unrealizable without art substances, and a work of art can't achieve its full sense without educated person capable of experience. Starting from that fact came the idea to explore the perception of the art works at the children in the early school age, in this case at the children in the first and the second grade of the primary school, their preferences and the attitude towards the works of art. It was tried to figure out how much children of the lower school age like to view the works of art and the preferences of the pupils of the lower school age (first and second grades of primary schools) according to work of arts of traditional or modern artistic expression (controlling the influence of the variable — gender), drawings or paintings, figurative or abstract presentation. Children of early school age in a higher percentage choose paintings in relation to drawings (81 % of the pupils of the first grade and 79% of the second grade). Most of the children of the lower school age (69% of the pupils of the first grade and 76% of the second grade) prefer figurative in relation to abstract expression. Most of the children of the lower school age like to view art work. 46. The social acceptance of secondary school students with learning disabilities (LD)Teja Majcen, Majda Schmidt, Karin Bakračevič, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper aims to shed light on the level of social acceptance among students with learning disabilities (LD4 ) in various secondary school vocational programs in comparison with their peers without disabilities. Our findings are based on an empirical study that comprised 417 students, 5 of whom 85 were students with LD. Based on sociometric analyses of all participating classes, we determined that students with LD were less integrated into the classroom in comparison to their peers without LD. The results of the sociometric analysis show statistically significant differences in the sociometric position between students with LD and students without LD. While students with LD were most frequently perceived as rejected, students without LD were seen as popular or average. In addition, students with LD see themselves as less socially self-efficient compared to their peers. The results of our study mostly refer to boys, because the sample comprised 359 boys and 58 girls. We believe that pro-inclusion teachers with appropriately developed strategies for strengthening students' social skills, as well as positive attitudes and sufficient knowledge about the special needs of students can have a significant impact on the social acceptance of students with special needs in the classroom community. 47. Grammar school students' opinions on the art curriculum : an Estonian, Portuguese and Slovenian comparative studyTomaž Zupančič, Annely Köster, Teresa Torres de Eça, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The article presents the attitude of grammar school students towards the art curriculum. It first provides an overview of the characteristics of contemporary art education, with an emphasis on the postmodern art curriculum and on linking course content with students’ interests. The study is based on the descriptive and causal non-experimental method, with a sample comprising 387 Slovenian, Estonian and Portuguese students. It was established that the students place the highest value on developing creativity, and are less interested in art history content and learning about the basics of the formal art language. They are attracted to contemporary topics, such as graffiti, multicultural art, the use of new media, and digital technologies. The results of the study provide opportunities for future comparative analyses and starting points for updating art curricula. 48. Increased augmentation index and central systolic arterial pressure are associated with lower school and motor performance in young adolescentsBernarda Vogrin, Marjan Rupnik, Dušanka Mičetić-Turk, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Objective: In adults, improper arterial function has been linked to cognitive impairment. The pulse wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index (AIx) and other vascular parameters are useful indicators of arterial health. In our study, we monitored arterial properties, body constitution, school success, and motor skills in young adolescents. We hypothesize that reduced cognitive and motor abilities have a vascular origin in children.
Methods: We analysed 81 healthy school children aged 11-16 years. Anthropometry central systolic arterial pressure, body mass index (BMI), standard deviation scores (SDS) BMI, general school performance grade, and eight motor tests were assessed. PWV, AIx, and central systolic arterial pressure (SBPao) were measured.
Results: AIx and SBPao correlated negatively with school performance grades. Extremely high AIx, PWVand SBPao values were observed in 5% of children and these children had average to low school performance. PWV correlated significantly with weight, height, and waist and hip circumference. AIx, PWV, school success, and BMI correlated strongly with certain motor functions.
Conclusions: Increased AIx and SBPao are associated with lower school and motor performance in children. PWV is influenced by the body's constitution. 49. Comparison of the Methods Used for Expanding Vocabulary in ELT TextbooksSandra Ažman, 2016, magistrsko delo Opis: The aim of this master’s thesis was to research the emphasis that is given on assimilating new vocabulary in the chosen textbooks, which were approved by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and are currently being used to teach/learn English as a foreign language in the ninth grade of primary schools.
In the theoretical part the focus has been given on different methods for learning or teaching new vocabulary, the appropriate amount of new vocabulary regarding the level of students’ language competences, the effect of methodology on vocabulary learning and communication, the role of repeating and refreshing of new vocabulary and the role of a textbook in foreign language learning.
The empirical part of the thesis includes two separate analyses of the questionnaire conducted among ninth grade students and teachers of English as a foreign language in the ninth grade of primary school. 48 students and 73 teachers participated in the research. With the help of these analyses we tried to establish whether the texts in the chosen textbooks are authentic enough to enhance automatic learning of vocabulary, whether the method for expanding vocabulary, which was named as the most successful in the theory, is also used in the textbooks that were analyzed and whether the textbooks include sufficient exercises to assimilate and refresh new vocabulary.
The research showed that the texts in the coursebooks are at least nearly authentic pieces of language according to students and teachers of English as a foreign language. However, slight adaptations of the texts are possible and also approved by the researches. One of the most successful methods for expanding vocabulary is, according to literature, reading. The analysis has also proven it in practice, since teachers named it as the most successful one. The results of the analysis showed that the textbooks include sufficient exercises to assimilate and refresh new vocabulary. 50. The Influence of the Early Learning of English on the Acquisition of English in Slovene Primary SchoolsNataša Kosajnč, 2016, magistrsko delo Opis: The results of the Slovenian National Assessment of Knowledge in English i.e. NAK (Nacionalno preverjanje znanja iz angleščine za 6. in 9. razred - NPZ) in the sixth class and the ninth class show different results among schools in Slovenia. The data suggest that there are several factors that help pupils achieve good results in the NAK, especially practice and early English language learning and early language exposure.
The purpose of the study was to determine the English language skills of the pupils in Slovenian schools who had organized, systematic English language learning in the first triad of the primary school in comparison to the English language skills of the pupils who did not have organized, systematic English language learning in the first triad of the primary school. The purpose was also to determine the impact of systematic English language teaching in the first triad of primary school on language knowledge of the fourth class pupils. A study was designed which was based on testing the English language skills on a sample of fourth class pupils, selected according to the form of English language learning in the first triad of primary school in Slovenia. The study was conducted in the 2015/2016 school year on a sample of 110 fourth class pupils divided into three groups. The experimental group consisted of 42 pupils who had organized, systematic early learning of English during the first triad. The first control group consisted of 17 pupils who did not have any kind of organized, systematic early learning of English in the first triad. The second control group consisted of 51 pupils who learned English as an extracurricular activity or took English language courses. All groups of pupils completed a questionnaire and took part in the language skills testing on different linguistic levels: lexical, grammatical and discourse levels. A language test was designed for this purpose. The results showed that the three groups were homogenous. Test results were compared within the three groups of pupils. The obtained data was also compared to the general, publicly available data of national sixth class testing (NAK).
The analysis showed statistically significant differences in the test results of the three groups of pupils. Pupils who had organized, systematic early learning of English in the first triad achieved better results overall. A more detailed analysis showed that the pupils who had early learning of English in the first triad were more successful in tasks focusing on grammar and discourse. Surprisingly, the pupils who did not experience the organized, systematic early learning of English in the first triad were more successful in lexical tasks.
