Collaborative culture as a challenge of contemporary schools
Mateja Pšunder, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Different authors stress that traditional culture is still the most common culture in schools. This culture prefers high educational goals, high expectations and productivity. Under such circumstances, there is no room for cooperation and helping each other. On the contrary, these stimulate competitiveness that causes tension between the participants. One of the fundamental aims of today's and future education is also to stimulate cooperation that provides each individual with the strength to come to known him or herself and to behave in accordance with his or her tradition and beliefs, while at the same time staying open to other and different people. This can be achieved only in a culture of good relationships that includes the values of tolerance, solidarity, critical thinking and independence. Research has shown that collaborative culture also has many other benefits over traditional culture reflecting itself in the well-being and effectiveness of teachers and students and also in the development of the institution as a whole. Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine effective schools without cooperation at all school levels. Since school culture is a relatively stable phenomenon, it takes a long time to change and such a change cannot be achieved with external orders. The most important initial step towards changing school culture is that all school staff realise its importance, influence and extent in creating an effective school. This can be a starting point and encouragement to think about the existing school climate, make plans for the future and find ways to change it.

Children's literature, teachers and integrative education : theory and school reality
Metka Kordigel Aberšek, Marija Ropič Kop, Vlasta Hus, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper represents the results of a quantitative research performed at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor. The aim of the project was to establish the implementation of the concept of integrative education, which was recommended for the first triennium of elementary education in Slovenia in the 90s. The essence of Slovene integration concept should be the following: focusing on the structure and the process of child's assimilation as well as accommodation in/of the structure, his/her ability to communicate the content of the structure and his/her ability to express the process of changing the structure. Our results show that the majority of teachers follow the recommended curriculum guidelines for integration as the main didactical concept for teaching in the first triennium of elementary school taught as a part of the compulsory Teacher training program - teaching in the first triennium. Nevertheless a big proportion of elementary school teachers (year 1-3) are not entirely aware of the criteria that should be used for integration in the educational process. The same elementary school teachers have difficulties (aware or unaware) with the process of planning and performing the integration concept in the classroom.

Mobile learning usage and preferences of vocational secondary school students : the cases of Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany
Antun Biloš, Davorin Turkalj, Ivan Kelić, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The purpose of this paper is to determine the current status of mobile device usage and mobile learning adoption in vocational education and training (VET) secondary schools in three European Union countries (Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany). The research focused on exploring students’ mobile device usage habits, their attitudes toward education in the context of mobile application support, and preferences regarding mobile learning features. The research confirmed a high level of mobile device usage among secondary school students on a daily basis; smartphones and laptops were the most commonly used devices. The vast majority of participants perceived themselves to be advanced mobile device users, but reported a deficit of ICT-assisted mobile learning experience. However, the majority of respondents with prior ICT-assisted education experience described it as a positive or very positive experience. In addition, study participants tended to agree that mobile learning will play a significant role in education in the future. The paper also explored the reported differences among the students in the three countries and suggested several implications for understanding students’ views of mobile learning. The findings provide insights into possibilities of m-learning implementation while creating a framework for m-learning application development in the VET secondary school environment.

Supporting learning skills in visual art classes : The benefits of teacher awareness
Helen Arov, Anna-Liisa Jõgi, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study focused on middle school art teachers supporting the development of students' learning skills, specifically their awareness of the framework of learning skills. It also looked at the relations between the teaching practices teachers use for supporting learning skills and students' learning motivation in art classes. The study combined qualitative and quantitative research methods. The class observations and interviews were conducted with ten Estonian middle school art teachers. One hundred and forty-eight students from the observed classes filled out the learning motivation questionnaire about their interest and achievement goals in visual arts. The study draws attention to the importance of teachers being aware of and valuing learning skills alongside subject specific knowledge, as it could enhance students' autonomous motivation and support adaptive goal setting.

Locating leadership of art in UK primary schools
Peter Gregory, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Using some of the evidence collected as part of a doctoral study of school-based leaders of art in the UK, this paper presents the most recent and emergent models of the leadership in art. The data suggests likely attributes of those in leadership positions and the effects upon the activities in which those individuals engage. As a case study of over two hundred art leaders, the challenges are clearly presented. They are more deeply explored through interviews and discussions about attitudes to artworks and their use with learners in the classroom as well as by analysing the paper records kept by the leaders. The study raises important issues for those who might want to learn from the situation in the UK.

High-school Students' Use of Fantasy and Science Fiction Reading for Escapism
Janja Papac, 2017, magistrsko delo

Opis: The thesis “High-school Students’ Use of Fantasy and Science Fiction Reading for Escapism” encompasses findings connected to adolescence and young adult literature. We present the emotional, cognitive and social characteristics of adolescence. We take a look at the influence that childhood traumas and defense mechanisms may have on adolescents. We also present findings connected to escapism and reading therapy. The genres from the title – fantasy and science fiction - are described, as well as their history. We also described fairytales and folktales. We took a closer look at the Harry Potter book series and the opinion some critics have about its influence on youth, as well as some well-known fairytales children can identify with. In the empirical part, we presented the results of a survey created to examine the reading habits and motivation of high-school students. We found that high-school students’ general satisfaction with life does not greatly influence their choice of reading materials.

Who says they don't read? Slovene elementary school students' reading motivation in EFL
Anja Pirih, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: A typical (Slovene) teenager today no longer finds reading materials on the book shelves in the local library, but forms a reading list of electronic sources, very often in English. However, in contrast with an abundance of studies focusing on first language (L1) reading strategies and motivation, not a lot of literature can be found on reading motivation in a foreign language, even though it is perceived as one of the most important factors influencing second language (L2) development. The aim of this research is to determine the influences on reading motivation in English as a foreign language in the group of young teenagers (11-14-year-olds) and a possible transfer of L1 reading attitudes to L2 reading. The theoretical framework relies on Wigfield and Guthrie's (1997) self-efficacy theory and Day and Bamford's (1998) expectancy value model. The data obtained from 197 questionnaires give an insight into not only the frequency of reading in English and the type of reading materials, but also the factors influencing teenagers' reading motivation in EFL.

The process of school administration and the relationship between individual and organizational needs
Bojan Burgar, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article investigates the importance of individual and organizational needs in relation to the effectiveness of educational establishments in the areas of management and the guidance of schools. The author proves that if more organizational needs are met, then less individual needs come to the forefront. The author argues that there is no balance and no necessary balanced relationship between organizational and individual needs for the effective management and administration of educational organisations. The article shows the status of eleven areas concerning the management and guidance of schools that directly affect the process of school operation and the possibility of balancing individual and organizational needs for the satisfaction of those involved in effectively running an educational organisation.

Portfolio within pedagogic diagnostics in primary schools
Jitka Petrová, Martina Fasnerová, 2012, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: At the present time, the importance of pedagogic diagnostics at primary school level has been increasing strongly, given the deepening needs to approach every child and every pupil individually. For the above-mentioned reasons, teachers must really search for methods and procedures that will help them understand pupils better in order to be able to support them and help them address certain issues that emerge at school as well as at home. Therefore, portfolio seems to be one of the most suitable tools to get to know a pupils personality in detail since it allows the pupil, the teacher, and the parents to monitor the progress and the development in different fields within longer periods. In spite of that, portfolio has not been widely used in schools and it appears to be a rather marginal tool instead. Therefore, a group from the Pedagogical Faculty of the Palacký University in Olomouc has decided to find out how the concept of portfolio is perceived and accepted by future primary teachers.

Searching for information on the internet: how do elementary school students use search engines on the web
Uroš Drnovšek, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The Internet has become one of the most popular sources of finding diverse information, even among elementary school students. One of the primary goals of our research was to closely observe students' web searching strategies while they searched for knowledge about life science. We then analyzed different variables, such as the number of keywords students used when they were searching, time spent browsing different web pages, time spent selecting web pages, etc. We measured students' success in completing different web searching tasks and tried to find some factors that are important that led to this success. Students had the most success with the fact-finding task, while research-oriented and semi self-generated tasks proved to be much challenging. Most students were satisfied with the information they got within the first two search attempts and, on average, they browsed only three websites per task. Age was an important factor in determining students' overall success and time for browsing the web.
