21. Teaching Literature in Slovene Grammar Schools and Preparation for the General Matura ExaminationBarbara Melanšek, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: The place of literature in English language teaching has been challenged by the emergence of the Communicative approach to teaching English language, the growing emphasis on spoken language and the teaching of English for specific purposes. However, recent years have brought renewed interest in this field, in how literary texts can best be exploited, and how the use of literature in the English classroom can help students improve their English.
The main purpose of this Master’s thesis is to investigate what approaches to teaching literature are employed by English teachers at Slovene grammar schools, in general and in connection to the preparation for the General Matura Examination. We also wish to examine if and to what extent the requirements of the General Matura for English Language affect the teaching of literature in Slovene Grammar Schools, as well as to unveil the general attitude of Slovene secondary school students toward literature and reading. In the theoretical part of the Master’s thesis, we provide a theoretical framework for using literature in an English classroom, present the main aspects of using English literary texts with grammar school students and provide a few didactic ideas for the in the classroom. 22. Oral Assessment of English in the Third Cycle of Slovene Elementary SchoolsMartin Pobežin, 2018, magistrsko delo Opis: The thesis Oral Assessment of English in the Third Cycle of Slovene Elementary Schools consists of two sections – theoretical and empirical. The aim of the former was to analyse the various factors that contribute to successful oral assessment. Oral assessment differs from others in its execution, since it is conveyed by word of mouth. This creates authentic communication between the two groups of participants – learners and the teacher. However, both have to fulfil their roles. Firstly, the learners’ task is to prepare well for the assessment and act respectfully towards the assessor. Secondly, the teacher must produce adequate criteria and tasks which meet the principles of reliability and validity. In the empirical section, we present how the oral assessment of English is executed in the third cycle of Slovene elementary schools by examining two groups of participants – teachers of English and third-cycle learners. It was established that learners prefer oral assessment, whereas teachers either remained undecided or claimed that they preferred written assessment. The general dislike of the oral form among teachers can be explained by their observations about lack of time. Consequently, many learners reported the common use of writing of the answers as a form of oral assessment, whereas the majority of teachers denied such claims. Interviews and presentations remain the two most commonly used forms of oral assessment; in addition, they are also the most popular among both groups of participants. All in all, a significant body of the learners claimed they would not change anything about the current process of oral assessment, which suggests that many curricular elements are adequately selected and executed. 23. Elementary school teachers’ attitudes towards the importance and use of teaching methods in visual arts educationZlata Tomljenović, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The quality of the teaching process in visual arts largely depends on a creative and effective combination of both general and subject-specific (visual arts) teaching methods. The aim of this study was to determine in- service teachers' perceptions of the features, specifics, importance and objectives of teaching methods in visual arts education, as well as their perception of the importance of visual arts as a school subject. The research was conducted on a sample of 373 Croatian elementary school teachers. A correlation was determined between the following variables: “teachers' work experience”, “teachers' perception of the importance of visual arts education” and the variable: “use of teaching methods in visual arts classes”. Findings have implications for modernizing and improving school practice; they also suggest further research in this area. 24. Cardiorespiratory fitness in primary education pupils : the association with anthropometric characteristicsMatea Gašparović, Vilko Petrić, Vesna Štemberger, Marija Rakovac, Iva Blažević, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The goal of this research was to determine cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) among primary school male and female pupils and its association with their anthropometric characteristics. The sample consisted of 112 boys and 136 girls, primary school pupils, aged 7 to 10. The Eurofit test battery was used to evaluate anthropometric characteristics (body height, body mass, body mass index (BMI)) and CRF (Beep test to estimate maximal oxygen uptake). The results indicate stagnation in the CRF with chronological age, in both sexes. A statistically significant association (p = 0.001) was shown for all CRF variables and anthropometric variables except for body height, which was not significantly associated with CRF. An increase in body mass and BMI was associated with a significant (p = 0.001) decrease in male and female pupils' CRF. 25. Sustainable rural development as an educational starting point in general grammar schools in SloveniaEva Konečnik Kotnik, 2009, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Education is a very important basis of sustainable development. That is why the selected learning objectives in the syllabus for geography in general grammar schools in Slovenia will be analysed within this contribution (general grammar school in Slovenia is a secondary school with a general-educational emphasis that does not provide vocational education, but prepares students aged 15 to 19 for further education at universities). We have selected learning objectives that relate to economic geography as a general geography topic, with special emphasis on learning objectives that refer to agriculture, rural areas and sustainable development.
This contribution will present the results of generic comparative analysis of selected learning objectives in syllabi that were issued during the period since the emergence of Slovenia as an independent state (1992, 1998 and 2008). The results of the evaluation of quoted learning objectives from the viewpoint of social needs, educational guidelines and geographical science, as well as the results of the evaluation from the viewpoint of geography teachers in general grammar schools will also be examined. Educational problems associated with economic geography, sustainable development and rural areas will be highlighted accordingly. 26. The organisational and personnel aspects of introducing ICT into grammar schoolsSrečo Zakrajšek, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This article presents the results of comparisons between investment into ICT and the current state of equipment in Slovenian high schools compared to similar schools in the EU member states. Extensive research is based on surveying and interviews with the headmasters of 10 Slovenian high schools, jointly representing a typical sample of schools, as well as the different aspects of using ICT in their schools. The research results have shown that Slovenian high schools are substantially worse equipped with ICT than similar schools in the developed countries of the EU. This is evident in the lack of modern forms of organization, operation and education based on ICT. Slovenian high schools can only modernize their organization and operations if the Slovenian government starts investing substantially more into purchasing equipment, teacher training and the promotion of the knowledge, skills and competences that can only be developed using ICT. 27. The integration of the subject environmental studies with other subjects : the teachers' viewsVlasta Hus, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The author of the present paper first theoretically describe the didactic concept of integrated lessons, then layout the discussions on integrating lessons in subject Natural and social studies (now Environmental studies) with lessons in Slovene subject. In the empirical part she demonstrate the attitude of teachers in the first triad toward integrated lessons and how the subject Environmental studies is included into this concept. The findings show that the teachers included in the sample had different opinions about integrated lessons. They saw one of the basic advantages of integrated lessons compared to classical ones in the linking of the lessons with the pupils' lives. In the integration of the subject Environmental studies with other subjects, the subject Slovene language plays an important role. Teachers, however, cannot find connections with some of the subjects, despite the fact that they are defined in the national curriculum. The teachers claim they have greatest difficulties in the phase of planning integrated lessons. 28. The challenges of complete informatization of educationMagdalena Šverc, Igor Pesek, Andrej Flogie, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Since the methods of teaching and learning are currently changing, Slovenian society is challenged to respond. Ministries responsible for the development of the educational system encourage informatization of education by launching strategically oriented tenders. This research presents three such projects, which together propose guidelines on how to further develop the Slovenian educational system with an emphasis on the introduction of information and communication technologies into everyday life in Slovenian schools at all levels (teaching, learning, management, etc.). There are three main areas that are covered: (1) technical assistance and support, (2) development and deployment of e-learning materials and e-textbooks and (3) teacher training. Using these approaches it would be possible to achieve an increase in digital competences and a change in our pedagogical paradigm. Results show a better motivation, communication and improved teamwork among students. This is a consequence of changes in the way of thinking and teaching by both teachers and other school participants, especially the headmasters who put the student in the centre of activities. The whole process of school informatization depends on a coherent development of various fields. The focus is on a change of pedagogical paradigm and the consequential teacher and managerial staff training. 29. The architecture of a school system according to the theory of dynamical systemsBoris Aberšek, Janez Bregant, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: From the experience of recent years it seems clear that the existing educational system, as a whole, is perceived as an ailing system that fails to meet the needs of a major portion of the society it serves. Every aspect of the educational process must be studied and reconsidered in the light of new and different societal expectations. In the last decades we started with one school reform after the other, but it looks now that these changes had no positive impact whatsoever. Even worse, the school system was damaged afterwards. In this paper we will explore some possibilities how to improve it without facing these consequences. The main idea is, as a result of our latest research, that mathematical methods for describing and simulating could be very useful for predicting and simulating school systems without using a long term and complex empirical experimentation. The paper introduces the correlation between the dynamical mathematical calculus and the educational school system and elaborates to some extent the basic idea of using the former to predict the latter. 30. Slovene teachers' attitudes of arts and cultural education in primary schoolOlga Denac, Barbara Sicherl-Kafol, Branka Čagran, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Primary school teachers (342 in total) from all over Slovenia were questioned on their attitude towards arts and cultural education. The results of the study show that the teachers were most unanimous in regard to the importance of team planning in educational work in the field of the arts and the importance of cultural education for the life of an individual and society; this was followed by measures for raising the quality of arts and cultural education in primary school and the content of teacher training programs. Statistically significant differences in the teachers’ attitudes occurred with respect to their age and teaching position (class teacher and subject teacher). Unlike their younger colleagues and subject teachers, older teachers and class teachers expressed a more positive view of arts and cultural education.
