The impact of transport infrastructure projects on sustainable development within a major logistics gateway in North West England
Dimitrios Paraskevadakis, Alan Bury, Jin Wang, Jun Ren, Stephen Bonsall, Ian Jenkinson, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the North West of England the issue of a perceived infrastructure gap is of increasing concern. Investment needs to be made to improve the transport infrastructure of the region if it is to be expected to promote the development of its own regional logistics gateway. Funding tools have been set up to address the challenges arising from the imbalance in infrastructure development that exists between regions in the north of the United Kingdom and those in the south. For regions with well developed economies the outlook is promising as the availability of modern transport infrastructure looks set to improve. However, some sources believe that the development of new transport infrastructure will have a negative impact upon sustainable development. It is expected that this will occur in a range of both direct and indirect ways. As a result, it is critical that planning for the creation of new intermodal transport infrastructure, or the upgrading of that which already exists, takes into account the impact that these developments will have on the sustainable development of the host region. A scenario based development methodology is proposed in this paper. It was developed to provide a way to identify potential scenarios that may arise within a given region as a result of transport infrastructure projects. To create significant scenarios the methodology is dependent on the availability of a sufficient quantity of quality data. For this paper that data was collected through a focus group composed of stakeholders from the region in question. This was further supported by the performance of an impact survey using the same group of stakeholders.

A framework for use in modelling the modal choice decision making process in North West England’s Atlantic Gateway
Alan Bury, Dimitrios Paraskevadakis, Jun Ren, Farhan Saeed, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The task of producing a generic model of the modal choice decision making process is a challenging one. Modal choice is strongly influenced by the infrastructure limitations and geographical constraints of the area in which the decision is being made. With this in mind, addressing modal choice on an individual basis for each region may be the optimal solution. This is the approach adopted in this paper. The creation of a modal choice model is a multistage process of which this paper addresses the first stage, the production a framework of the decision making process. Firstly, a number of criteria that are commonly used in modal choice models are identified. Then a number of gaps in the criteria utilized in previous papers are established. Subsequently, the method used to produce a framework of the decision making process within North West England’s Atlantic Gateway is outlined. Through consultation with transport industry experts in North West England, an initial list of sixty eight papers was reduced to thirty six that were considered to be of specific relevance to modern day freight transportation within their region. The criteria used in each of these papers were then, along with further industry input, used to create the foundation on which a modal choice framework specific to the Atlantic Gateway could be built. A greater understanding of what influences modal choice within this region will allow informed decisions to be made by policy makers on how to more efficiently utilize the available modes of freight transport. Having established this, future work can then go on to build upon these findings. This paper recommends that future work is performed to establish the weights of each criteria and sub-criteria within the framework. This should then be followed by establishing industry’s perceptions of the best and worst alternatives for moving freight within the Atlantic Gateway.

Tracking without concessions?
Danilo Šuster, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the first, shorter part of the paper I point out some problems and potential misunderstandings connected with B. Berčić's treatment of Nozick's sensitivity condition for knowledge. In the second part of the paper I offer the condition of modal stability or limited sensitivity as a revision of Nozickian conditions for non-accidental connection between our belief and the truth of our belief. "When it is seriously possible for you to falsely believe that p", that is a goodreason for denying that you know that p. Sensitivity within limits requires that we consider more possible worlds (all within a sphere of serious or relevant possibilities) than classical sensitivity, but not the worlds outside this sphere. The idea of modal stability combines robustness (benefits of safety) with responsiveness to facts (benefits of sensitivity).

The role of modal verbs in research papers in the field of logistics
Polona Vičič, Klementina Penelope Jurančič, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Research papers, an essential vehicle for disseminating new knowledge and findings, have long been valued for their linguistic objectivity and impersonality. However, more recent approaches to research paper writing suggest that authors should also take an "argumentative position" (White, 2003) by projecting their stance and encouraging the readers to actively engage in the process of reading and evaluating the text (Hyland, 2005; Scollon, 1994). An important linguistic feature, frequently employed for both objective and subjective presentation of claims, is modality and within it modal verbs, which through their modal meanings express different communicative functions. In recognition of genre- and discipline-specific norms, the present paper will focus on quantitative and qualitative analysis of modal verbs and their meanings and functions in logistics research papers, whereby the ultimate goal is to show what practical implications the study's results may have for the teaching of English to students of logistics.

English modal verbs in modal verb phrase structures and lexical associations of modality in "standard terms and conditions of sale"
Nataša Gajšt, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents the findings of a corpus-based analysis of English modal verbs and semi-modals in modal verb phrase structures as well as lexical association of modality in ʼstandard terms and conditions of saleʼ, which are legally binding documents in the domain of commerce and whose purpose is to govern the obligations and rights of sellers and buyers in the transaction of goods for payment. Our research has established that the most frequent modal verbs in these documents are shall, will, may, must and can, and that the most common modal verb phrase structures in are ʼmodal+infinitiveʼ and ʼmodal+be+past participleʼ. We found 718 different lexical verbs that indicate actions, states and conditions associated with commercial transactions. These results correspond with the definition of these documents. Our findings are a demonstration of how language expresses the characteristics of a legal text type in a professional domain of commerce/trade.

Modal Meanings in Different Text Types in the Field of Logistics
Polona Vičič, 2016, doktorska disertacija

Opis: The thesis sets out to investigate modality, which has been recognised as a central linguistic feature used for the expression of opinions and attitudes and thus also for establishing a dialogic relationship between the writer and reader. Following more recent, text-type oriented approaches to modality, which have recognised the importance of both genre- and discipline-specific conventions, the analysis aims to investigate modal verb use in different text types in logistics. Building on the finding that academic discourse is characterised by both objective (dynamic) and subjective (epistemic and deontic) presentation of claims it aims to establish to what extent the ratio between the two reflects genre- and discipline-specific use. The study is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative (semantic) analysis, the results of which show that modal verb use in the analysed text types is characterised by a marked dichotomy between dynamic on the one side and epistemic and deontic use on the other, which, at least to some extent, could be related to the interdisciplinary nature of logistics. Furthermore, the analysed texts also show differences in the overall proportions of dynamic, epistemic and deontic use, which could be linked to the genre-specific style of each text type.

A Comparison of the Occurrence of Modal Tenses and Modal Verbs in Fiction
Minja Krajnc, 2013, diplomsko delo

Opis: The aim of my graduation thesis was to establish to what extant modality is preserved in translations of the modal tenses modal past tense and modal past perfect tense in the novel “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. The older translation is called “Alica v čudežni deželi” and was made by Gitica Jakopin and the second is called “Aličine prigode v čudežni deželi”, made by Helena Biffio. I wanted to establish whether the amount of preserved modality is higher in translations of modal tenses in conditional clauses where modality is more apparent than in the case of modal tenses in their usual contexts (e.g. with the verb wish and in the context of if only), where modality is less apparent. Furthermore, I examined the preservation of modality in the translation of modal verbs could, should and would and also compared them with the other two modal structures. The reason I focused on the structure of the English modal system which is not represented in the curriculum of Slovene schools and teaching English as a foreign language as much as conditional sentences and of course modal verbs, is because I wanted to point out that the number of examples of modal tenses in literature is not negligible and the function they carry is important. There were two main research questions which I focused on. Firstly, I wanted to find out to what extent English modal structures (modal verbs, conditional clauses and modal tenses) are translated into Slovene. I predicted that modality will be better preserved in translations of the modal verbs could, would and should, less in the case of modal tenses in conditional sentences and least in the case of modal tenses in their usual contexts and that translation of the modal past perfect tense will be more consistent when used in conditional clauses than in its usual contexts. The analysis showed that modality is better preserved when modal tenses are used in their usual contexts and the translation of modal past perfect is also more consistent in such cases. The second research question deals with the differences between the two translations in terms of modality. I took into consideration that Gitica Jakopin's translation is older than Helena Biffio's and therefore it is possible that she was more precise in translating modal past perfect tense into Slovene predpreteklik, which proved to be true, although the analysis showed that modality is in general better preserved in the translation by Helena Biffio. Where she had lost her percentage is in preserving modality when translating modal past perfect, either in conditional clauses or in its usual contexts. This confirms my hypothesis that predpreteklik (past perfect) is through time decreasing in use in literature, even in English-Slovene translations.

Mild oxidation of cellulose fibers using dioxygen as ultimate oxidizing agent
Gabriela Biliuta, Lidija Fras Zemljič, Valeria Harabagiu, Sergiu Coseri, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Two types of regenerate cellulose fibres were oxidized under mild conditions, by using N-hydroxyphthalimide as catalyst and molecular oxygen as ultimate oxidizing agent. The amounts of negatively charged groups introduced were determined by means of potentiometric titration. The degree of polymerization and molar mass of the oxidized fibres determined viscosimetrically, has been found to be almost unaffected during oxidation.
