1. The Influence of English on the Language of Croatian Influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok Social Media : master's thesisEna Cilar, 2023, magistrsko delo Opis: The rapid spread of the English language, which is frequently referred to as a lingua franca, has had a significant impact on other languages and the peculiar language of computer-mediated communication. What is more, the Internet, social media and digital influencers are the key agents of both language change and changes in the modern society. Due to the globally growing popularity of social media influencers, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which their language use is affected by the globality of English, with a focus on Croatian influencers. Therefore, data for this paper are drawn from altogether 270 social media posts published by the eight most successful Croatian influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The research methods include linguistic, thematic and content analysis. The results reveal that the use of ‘ad hoc loanwords’ and intra-sentential code-switching are more common among Croatian influencers in comparison with outdated Anglicisms and inter-sentential code-switching. While the most frequently used loanwords among Croatian influencers belong to the categories of cyberculture and popular culture, the use of loanwords belonging to particular semantic fields is not strongly related to their thematic content categories. The importance and originality of this thesis are that it is the first study to provide new insights into the language use of Croatian influencers in relation with English as a global and leading online language. However, due to practical constraints, it is limited in terms of the research sample size and generalizability, which offers implications for further research. 3. User Experience of Croatian National & Nature Parks’ Website – A Comparison : a comparisonMihaela Franjić, 2022, magistrsko delo Opis: We are not saying that tourism is a dynamic area for no reason, as the COVID–19 pandemic has shown us. Tourism is influenced by many external factors, and one of them is the development of digital technology, which must be monitored in parallel. We are currently in a historical period that is characterized by the fact that without the Internet there is no expansion into other markets. Digital technology covers all pores and activities of modern society, enables new ways for sales, development, distribution in the tourist market, which is full of opportunities and obstacles. Websites have evolved largely because they help, especially small and medium–sized organizations reduce costs, time, and help them market and present themselves to users.
In this paper, we will deal with Croatian national and natural parks, which are a national treasure of exceptional importance for Croatian tourism, and which annually attract around 3.5 million tourists. For the first time, in 2017, the parks of Croatia integrated all the parks on one website through the PARCS project, as a basis for better informing users and promoting the parks as a brand on the tourist market. Precisely for this reason, we are interested in how users view the website www.parkovihrvatske.hr, since the appearance of the site has not been renewed since 2017. It is extremely important to know the opinion of potential users, because more than half of the time they plan and book their trip via the Internet with the help of a computer. This is one more reason to check the current situation and opinion of foreign and domestic citizens. The research enabled us to compare respondents, connect expectations and evaluations, and at the end provide an additional opinion of the respondents. In order to improve and improve the user experience according to the respondents, the website should work on its design, security, include all park offers together with tickets and update its information. Based on the analysis, we will try to present guidelines for upgrading the website if they want to be trendy, competitive and expand into the tourist market overwhelmed by digital transformation. 4. English teaching update available: a study on online EFL educators : magistrsko deloAndreja Benković, 2021, magistrsko delo Opis: The master’s thesis explores the north-Croatian teachers’ readiness for teaching online. With technology slowly, but steadily, taking over everyday actions, it was only a matter of time when it would take over education. With March 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, technology was the safest way of conducting lessons and was instantaneously implemented into education. This master’s thesis aims to determine how English teachers in the three northernmost Croatian counties managed the new challenge. Specifically, it tests factors that influenced their e-readiness through 7 hypotheses. The research is based on questionnaire results – the questionnaire was sent to 86 primary schools, 30 secondary schools and 11 private language schools in Međimurje county, Varaždin county and Koprivnica-Križevci county via email with a request to forward it to their English teachers. Analysing responses with quantitative research methods, the study showed that factors such as age, gender and professional development influence teachers’ e-readiness, while there were no differences among the three counties. Furthermore, the results revealed that the teachers generally feel ready for conducting online lessons, although Gay’s questionnaire on Carribean teachers’ online teaching readiness proved otherwise. Interestingly, some of the teachers did have online teaching experience prior to the pandemic, which along with organized professional development offered to them, helped them feel ready to teach online. Ultimately, teachers are better prepared to teach online than they were prior to the pandemic; however, there is still a lot of room for improvement. 5. Remnants of Serbo-Croatian lexis in present-day CroatianDario Lečić, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This article deals with the process of language purism and the presence of Serbisms in Croatian. We attempt to show whether the speakers of Croatian know and use specific lexical items that are generally considered to be more characteristic of Serbian usage. For this purpose we use two data sources: a corpus of Croatian and a questionnaire survey. The results show that the speakers of Croatian are aware of the differences between Croatian and Serbian to a large extent. Even though they mostly do not use them, most speakers do know the meaning of lexemes that were used in the Serbo-Croatian period. This leads to the conclusion that the process of “cleansing” Croatian is being successfully implemented (but is far from completion). However, we argue against the justifiability of this process. 6. Impact of terms-of-trade on Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Croatia in the short runKarol Szomolányi, Martin Lukáčik, Adriana Lukáčiková, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The terms-of-trade shocks are not main source of business cycles in three post-communist countries (i.e., Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Croatia). The zero or negative reactions of the trade balance in terms-of-trade positive shocks in the countries exhibit the Obstfeld-Svensson-Razin effect, according to which the Harberger-Laursen-Metzler positive effect on terms-of-trade indicates that the smaller the trade balance, the more persistent the terms-of-trade shock is. The conclusions come from the structural vector autoregressive analysis of the cyclical components of terms-of-trade, trade balance, output, consumption, and investment in three post-communist countries.
