1. Terrorism : social causes and perspectivesRenato Matić, Anita Dremel, Mateja Šakić, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Purpose:
The aim of this paper is to analyze the origin of different interpretations of the events connected with terrorism, with special emphasis put on different interpretations of causes and consequences of terrorism. The objective is to show that the same logic has perpetrated the causes of the problem and is being used to solve it.
Design/Methods/Approach:
This research into the social causes of terrorism leans against a critical theoretical perspective and uses a historical comparative method aimed at deconstructing some taken-for-granted perspectives regarding terrorism and its actors. It brings the understanding of the causes of terrorism into connection with the history of mutual relationships between today's main actors of global terrorism and anti-terrorism in the wish to explain the consequences of terrorism as resulting from the stable and continued relationship between the main actors.
Findings:
The analysis has shown that current approaches to dealing with the problem of terrorism are so strikingly unsuccessful because, among other reasons, they rely on the same logic that led to the problem in the first place and thus cannot be used to solve the problem. Current power relations between the actors of “terrorism” and “anti-terrorism” point to the need for a possible alternative approach to preventing the mutually complementing “terrorist” and “anti-terrorism” violence.
Originality/Value:
The greatest value of this analysis is that it offers a view of the problem of terrorism based in the tradition of sociological theory, particularly that of deviance, serving thus as an important complement to more customary criminalist, criminological, psychological and legal perspectives. Without such historically grounded and sociologically informed approach, critical perspective would not be possible. 2. Hybridity and Mimicry in V. S. Naipaul The Mimic MenTatjana Zagorc, 2015, diplomsko delo Opis: This graduation thesis explores the themes of hybridity and mimicry in V. S. Naipaul’s novel The Mimic Men within the categories of displacement, race, identity, culture, and religion. During colonialism, different cultures in contact affecting each other became hybridized. Hybridity was comprehended as various abhorrent discriminatory practices of the colonial rule, which were implemented in order to fortify the superiority of the West and to preserve the notions of a hierarchy of cultures. One of the strategies was creation of mimic men, who while mimicking English manners, morals and values would still be in a less worthy position because of their origin. However, mimicry carries its doubleness seen as a form of social control as well as a doubt in presented reality and represents a turning-point, a threat to authenticity, uniqueness and supremacy of colonizer and dominant culture. The novel mirrors the influence of the colonial rule on the formation of the protagonist’s hybrid identity and his mimicry. Ključne besede: colonialism, hybridity, mimicry, V. S. 3. FORSTER'S NOVEL A PASSAGE TO INDIA, ITS COMPARISON WITH THE MOVIE A PASSAGE TO INDIA, DIRECTED BY DAVID LEAN AND COMPARISON OF LEAN'S MOVIE WITH THE MOVIE THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTELIztok Dremelj, 2013, diplomsko delo Opis: India was ruled by the British for almost one hundred years (between 1858 and 1947). E.M Forster visited India several times at the time of British occupation. He observed the relationship between the Indian and the British people in India. His novel A Passage to India was published in 1924.
In my diploma paper I will analyze the relationship between the British and the Indians as they are presented in Forster’s novel. The British did not exploit only Indian natural sources, but also Indian people, who had to work for very low salaries and they had almost no civil rights.
What follows is the comparison between Forster’s novel and the movie based on the novel A Passage to India. This movie was directed by David Lean in the year 1984. I will focus on the differences in content, character descriptions and also the presentation of the relationship between the British and the Indians.
In the last part I will compare Lean’s movie A Passage to India with the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, directed by John Madden in the year 2012. Both movies take place in India, but in different time period, A Passage to India during the British occupation of India and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel after that. I will try to find similarities and also differences between these two movies, especially in the relationship between the British and Indian people in India. 4. EAST AND WEST IN R.P. JHABVALA'S HEAT AND DUSTAndreja Grča, 2013, diplomsko delo Opis: The aim of this diploma paper is to analyze the dynamic of East and West encounter and the problems that ensue when the cultures of East and West meet in the novel Heat and Dust by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. The author is a westerner, who lived in India for the most part of her adult life and therefore had a unique position of insider – outsider. She is able to observe the dynamic from a detached point of view. She uses orientalist discourse that puts West above East, but because Jhabvala uses irony, she mocks this kind of attitude and this classifies the text as post-colonial. Within this dynamic, I also explored the relationship between men and women, as well as women in India. The relationships in the novel can not prosper because of the cultural differences, supporting the Forsterian idea that East and West can never be friends. Another aim of this diploma is to explore the background of orientalist discourse as explained by Edward Said in his book Orientalism. Said explains the development of orientalism and how the orientalist discourse feeds it. 5. African LiteratureDenis Recek, 2011, diplomsko delo Opis: The topic of this diploma is the formation and shaping of African literature. The first chapter is about the beginning of African literature. It describes oral literature and its transmission into written literature. Written African literature had great problems in becoming a part of world literature because of its diversity of languages and dialects. Christianity and Islam are mentioned as two religions which had a great impact on African literature. Colonialism is broadly described as an essential factor in the development of African literature. The second chapter is an analysis of a famous novel written by Alan Paton entitled Cry the Beloved Country. It speaks of a parson searching for his son in a big city. During this search there are many descriptions of the circumstances people live and their relationships. I compared the novel to a recent movie about aliens that are imprisoned in a concentration camp entitled District 9.
