Depressive symptoms among Slovenian female tertiary students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic : analysis of two repeated cross-sectional surveys in 2020 and 2021

Opis: The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the mental health of the general population. This holds true especially for vulnerable groups, including young people, students, and females. Our study examined cross-sectional changes in depressive symptoms from immediately before the COVID-19 pandemic (January/February 2020) to the second wave of the epidemic in Slovenia (January/February 2021) among female tertiary students. A multivariate analysis of two repeated cross-sectional surveys was performed using relatively homogeneous samples. The pooled sample included 418 young adult female students (Mage = 21.21 years). Depressed affect items were used to measure depressive symptomatology. All three feelings indicating depressed affect increased substantially and significantly from 2020 to 2021: feeling depressed (23% vs. 38%), lonely (16% vs. 43%), and sad (21% vs. 49%). In 2021, female students had almost a three-fold increase in the odds of reporting at least two out of three depressed affect symptoms compared to 2020 (19% vs. 43%; aOR 2.97; 95% CI 1.59–5.54; p < 0.001), adjusted for sociodemographic and socioeconomic confounders. Our findings suggest that Slovenian female students’ mental health deteriorated during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health professionals’ efforts to combat the pandemic’s mental health-related negative short-term and potential long-term impacts should thus focus on young people, especially on younger female students.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international freight transport in Slovenia and EU

Opis: The sudden emergence of COVID-19 and the declaration of a pandemic in the year 2020 has significantly impacted all factors of the economy, including international trade of goods. International freight transport (road, rail, air, and maritime) was also affected. The research analyses the changes in the implementation of international freight transport during the COVID-19 pandemic in EU countries. The main research question was: How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact international freight transport in Slovenia and selected EU member countries? According to the results, we can see that the pandemic outbreak had a different impact on each type of transport. Some modes of transport were more negatively affected by the pandemic than others. In the case of international road freight transport, the pandemic positively affected it (both in Slovenia and at the EU level) since the volume of transported goods increased

Influence of the pandemic on students digital literacy skills

Opis: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many hardships to the world, but in this master thesis we would like to focus on the changes affecting student’s digital literacy skills during their online studies. With different circumstances affecting their efforts we try to research what were some of the problems they faced trying to acquire education and what programs and techniques helped them on the way. The purpose of this research was to examine the discrepancy between digital literacy levels pre, during and post pandemic, and how all those changes affected the students of Slovenia and Serbia, and what were the possible differences between those countries. We go over the results of the questionnaire and the statistic research while gathering our thoughts about their meanings and how can we use them for future researches on this topic and as an even more important goal, to raise awareness on the effects of the restrictions and changes on students. We believe that our research gave an insight on how much the changes in understanding how technology has helped students to follow up on their education in a new form and at the same time educate following populations. Researching relevant literature, we found that with the efforts of all parties including students, their professors, university boards but also with the help of technology and government funds we could help guide the development of student’s digital literacy in the right direction.

Comparison of the evolution of the COVID-19 disease between Romania and Italy

Opis: After the outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy, thousands of Romanian citizens who worked in Northern Italy, Spain or Germany returned to Romania. Based on the time-dependent susceptible–infected–recovered—SIR model, this paper compares the evolution of the COVID-19 disease between Romania and Italy, assuming that the parameter value of R0 in the time-dependent SIR model decreases to R1 < R0 after publicly announced restrictions by the government, and increases to a value of R2 < R1 when the restrictions are lifted. Among other things, we answer the questions about the date and extent of the second peak in Italy and Romania with respect to different values of R2 and the duration of the restrictions.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 on the quality of STEM higher education

Opis: Pandemic COVID-19 has forced universities around the world to go online virtually overnight. This has been a major challenge, especially for study programmes in STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) where distance learning was not previously preferred. This was mainly due to a large proportion of the experimental laboratory work done by students, which could reach up to half of all contact hours. While the lectures were utilized practically immediately after lockdown using video conferencing systems, the implementation of the practical study contents posed a greater challenge. This paper presents specific adaptations for certain activities in the university education of chemical engineering that had to be implemented quickly, such as laboratory and computer exercises, students' final theses and dissertations, internships, knowledge examination and evaluation. We highlight the most critical activities and most urgent solutions that were initiated. Various measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus had to take into account many uncertainties about the duration of the pandemic to ensure that students acquire the desired competences and skills in time without being physically present in the laboratories. Particular attention is paid to examinations, especially calculus tests, which are difficult to apply remotely. First evaluations show that the adapted learning process has been carried out effectively, but the big unknown is how successfully the students will pass the exams and how the lessons will be conducted in next academic year.

Opis: Novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), named a pandemic by the WHO, is the current global health crisis. National and international collaboration are indispensable for combating COVID-19 and other similar potential outbreaks. International efforts to tackle this complex problem have led to remarkable scientific advances. Yet, as a global society, we can and must take additional measures to fight this pandemic. Undoubtedly, our approach toward COVID-19 was not perfect, and testing has not been deployed fast enough to arrest the epidemic early on. It is critical that we revise our approaches to be more prepared for pandemics as a united body by promoting global cooperation and commitment.
