Climate change-related displacement and the determination of refugee status under the 1951 Refugee Convention
Elijah Sriroshan Sritharan, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Climate change and climate-driven migration are two of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century, and there is no legal framework for protecting those displaced across national borders for climate-related reasons. The 1951 Refugee Convention hardly applies to human mobility in the context of climate change. This paper was written in the hopes of initiating a discussion concerning an alternative perspective through which persons fleeing natural disasters linked to climate change may satisfy the eligibility conditions for recognition of refugee status. Expanding the definition of refugee as defined in the Convention by including the notion of vulnerability to climate disasters that are caused by the underlying socio-economic conditions in the claimant’s home country and the role of discrimination in causing differential exposure to the climate-related disasters in legal definitions might open the door for the availability of refugee status for persons fleeing in the context of climate change. This paper proposes the adoption of a reformed human rights-based interpretation, particularly with regard to the individual nature of refugee status determination. Recalibrating the Convention to facilitate climate-induced migration could reduce political tension and social unrest in receiving countries.

Don't leave your heart at work : profiles of work-life interference and cardiometabolic risk
Katja Kerman, Sara Tement, Christian Korunka, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The present study adopts an exploratory, person-oriented approach to investigate possible patterns of work-life interference. We examine work–life interference from a cognitive (i.e., thinking about work), behavioral (i.e., engaging in work-related behavior), and performance perspective (i.e., reduced functionality in private life, or work–life conflict) in order to identify profiles of employees that could potentially remain uncovered with variable-oriented research. Furthermore, as work–life interference relates to well-being and health, we were interested in exploring possible differences between profiles in emotional exhaustion, cardiometabolic risk, and health-related behavior. Self-report data on work–life interference and well-being, as well as objective health data, were collected from a heterogeneous sample of 289 employees. Four profiles with different patterns of work–life interference were identified. Out of the four profiles, two profiles reported moderate and high work–life interference (the Moderate Interference and High Interference profiles). The other two profiles revealed distinct combinations of moderate and low performance and behavioral interference (the Low Performance Interference and Low Behavioral Interference profiles). The High Interference and Low Behavioral Interference profiles were identified as risk groups in terms of cardiometabolic health, while the Low Performance Interference and Moderate Interference profiles showed low to no risk. Regarding work-related well-being, the High Interference profile showed the highest risk of emotional exhaustion.

Exploring factors afecting elementary school teachers' adoption of 3D printers in teaching
Branko Anđić, Andrej Šorgo, Christoph Helm, Robert Weinhandl, Vida Lang, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Owing to its advantages such as producing durable models and easy accessibility, 3D modeling and printing (3DMP) has become increasingly popular in educational practice and research. However, the results of many studies have shown that the adoption rate of 3DMP among teachers is still low, especially in elementary schools. Therefore, research is needed to expand current knowledge about what influences teachers' decisions to start and continue using 3DMP in elementary schools. To investigate factors that affect elementary school teachers' decisions to use 3D printing in teaching, this study uses a mixed methods research approach combining binary logistic regression with a qualitative thematic analysis approach. Both approaches assembled predictive constructs from a range of theories on (1) technology acceptance and (2) intentions to continue or abandon 3DMP use. Using a sample of 225 elementary teachers from Montenegro, this study empirically concluded that intentions to discontinue 3DMP was slightly more strongly correlated with the predictors (i.e., performance expectancy, effort expectancy, perceived pedagogical impact, personal innovativeness, management support, user interface quality, technology compatibility, social influence, student expectations) than was intentions to continue using 3DMP. Performance expectancy was a significant determinant of teachers’ continued use of a 3DMP approach. The remaining seven factors (constructs) were found to be insignificant predictors. Perceived pedagogical impact and technology compatibility were significantly associated with teachers' decisions to discontinue using 3DMP. Our results also suggest that the time required to use 3DMP during instruction, the impact of 3DMP on the implementation of curriculum activities, and the availability of 3D printers are all relevant factors that influence teachers’' decision to use or abandon 3DMP.

The impact of plug-in hybrid vehicles in low-voltage distribution systems using a Monte Carlo simulation
Evica Smilkoska, Vasko Zdraveski, Jovica Vuletić, Jordančo Angelov, Mirko Todorovski, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The growing presence and randomness of renewable-based Distributed Generation, such as solar, photovoltaic, and wind power, and heavy Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle loads in residential distribution grids result in both a higher degree of imbalance and a wide range of voltage fluctuations. When increasing the number of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles that are simultaneously charged, the additional unpredicted load may cause several problems to the current grid in terms of voltage deviations, thermal overloads, power losses, increased aging of transformers and lines, decreased quality of supply, and power outages. This paper proposes an approach that models Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles’ behaviour and performs power flow analysis on CIGRE low voltage benchmark grid to investigate the impact on the current distribution grid.

Green techniques for preparation of red beetroot extracts with enhanced biological potential
Dragana Borjan, Vanja Šeregelj, Darija Cör Andrejč, Lato Pezo, Vesna Tumbas Šaponjac, Željko Knez, Jelena J. Vulić, Maša Knez Marevci, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Red beetroot is well known for its high proportion of betalains, with great potential as functional food ingredients due to their health-promoting properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of processing techniques such as Soxhlet, cold, ultrasound and supercritical fluid extraction on the betalains content and its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antihyperglycemic activities. Whilst Soxhlet extraction with water has provided the highest yield, the highest content of total phenolics was found in an extract prepared using Soxhlet extraction with 50% ethanol. Amongst eight phenolic compounds detected in the extracts, protocatechuic acid was the most abundant. The concentrations of total phenolics ranged from 12.09 mg/g (ultrasound extraction with 30% methanol) to 18.60 mg/g (Soxhlet extraction with 50% ethanol). The highest anti-inflammatory activity was observed for cold extraction with 50% methanol extract. The high radical scavenging activity of supercritical fluid extracts could be a consequence of nonphenolic compounds. The chemometrics approach was further used to analyse the results to find the “greenest” method for further possible application in the processing of beetroot in the food and/or pharmaceutical industry. According to the standard score, the best extraction method was determined to be Soxhlet extraction with 50% ethanol.

Analysis of two diverse nursing records applications : mixed methods approach
Marija Milavec Kapun, Vladislav Rajkovič, Uroš Rajkovič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction: Poor adoption of electronic health records among healthcare workers can diminish their impact. Healthcare informatics solutions development should diligently acknowledge end-user needs. This study compares a user experience and perceived quality of the nursing process integration in two different applications for electronic documentation of the nursing care plan. Both applications were designed and tested in Slovenia. Methods: In the first phase, final year undergraduate nursing students were recruited (n=73) and randomly assigned into two groups. Each group used one of the applications for a duration of five hours. A survey among students was conducted. In the second phase, additional students were recruited (n=40) and invited to participate in qualitative analysis of the unfavourably rated application. Results: The modern, visually improved application was favourably rated by students in terms of all aspects of application usability. However, students reported a significant number of inadequacies regarding the nursing process methodology integration. On the contrary, the students using the poorly rated and visually outdated application reported no such concerns. Qualitative analysis of student reflections identified additional positive features of software design that were not detected in survey results analysis. Conclusion: This study showed that a user-centred approach can be used to compare diverse electronic solutions. Detected discrepancies in findings using qualitative and quantitative analysis show the importance of integrating diverse research approaches for adequate evaluation of software solutions. Furthermore, this study design promotes empowerment of healthcare workers to participate in the development and critical evaluations of software solutions.

The Use of Storybooks in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Primary Level (2nd AND 3rd Grade) in Slovene Primary Schools : master thesis
Barbara Maher, 2022, magistrsko delo

Opis: This Master’s Thesis deals with the topic of teaching English as a foreign language to young language learners with the use of storybooks/a story-based approach. It has been produced with the intent to encourage and persuade English teachers of young language learners (in Slovenia) to introduce this approach to their early foreign language lessons, by offering a detailed overview of the advantages a story-based approach brings to the context of foreign language instruction, and to serve as a handbook, guiding them through the recommendations for the selection of appropriate storybooks, the preparation for storytelling/storyreading and its implementation, with additional emphasis on the importance of choosing and incorporating suitable story-related activities to each stage of the storytelling/reading act. Moreover, concerns teachers might have when first starting to use this approach, such as whether or not the learner's first language should be used in the story-based lessons, and how many times the same story can be presented to the learners, have been touched on, as well. Furthermore, the Master’s Thesis provides a selection of ready-to-use story-based lesson plans, prepared around chosen storybooks, all made to fit the goals/aims of foreign language instruction at primary level in the 2nd and 3rd grade in Slovene primary schools.

H. P. Lovecraft's Symbols of Indifference: A Combined Critical Approach
Štefan Hadalin, 2021, magistrsko delo

Opis: H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is an author who has in the decades since his death survived in the minds of millions of readers, mostly due to the power of his works of weird fiction and the resulting emergence of what he dubbed Cosmic Horror, conveyed through the symbolism and philosophy found in his Cthulhu Mythos. His antiquated style of writing that has since inspired many is at the same time a treasure trove of symbols, which have been interpreted and re-interpreted many times, but mostly as a whole aspect of his writing, with individual symbols not given the attention they deserve. The concepts and themes they convey are largely intertwined in a pattern of meanings and partial overlaps, making them hard to be differentiated fully from one another. However, outside of that, the meanings of the symbols can be established relatively clearly, with some of the main thematic connections between theme and meaning of an individual symbol standing out clearly above other thematic connections. Since the interpretation of the meaning of a symbol is partially based on the approach used, a combined approach that examines the symbols from the points of view of classic Lovecraftian scholars like S.T. Joshi and David E. Schultz, C.G. Jung’s theories of archetypes and the unconscious, Campbell’s monomyth, and a dose of reader-response style criticism is possible, with the intention of determining the effect of different critical approaches on the meaning of symbols and the thematic connections that are in this process established between both groups. The connections that are established are as interconnected as the themes themselves, but a differentiation between stronger and weaker connections, determining the main thematic connection to the symbol’s meaning is possible. “The Call of Cthulhu” is as the first great story of Lovecraft’s later writing period a useful text, that can be reduced to symbols, a number of which can be used for the purposes of determining the nature of the aforementioned connections. Lovecraft’s symbols considered as individual elements with a variety of aspects and the interplay between themes and meaning is then another way to study the meanings of the texts as a whole, through the lens of associated meanings determined through differing approaches. The main themes of knowledge and cosmic indifference always shine through, but the meanings of the symbols are built in various ways through various approaches, still arriving at roughly the same thematic connections, which can through the study of this process lead to a different appreciation for the masterful manipulation of stylistic, symbolic and atmospheric elements Lovecraft’s tales represent.
