Advancing nanofluid numerical modelling: A novel Euler–Lagrange method with experimental validation
Nejc Vovk, Blaž Kamenik, Elif Begum Elcioglu, Erdem Ozyurt, Ziya Haktan Karadeniz, Alpaslan Turgut, Jure Ravnik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We present a novel approach to numerical modelling of thermal nanofluids based on the Euler–Lagrange method. This approach overcomes the challenge of extremely fine temporal discretization, which previous Euler–Lagrange nanofluid numerical models struggled to address, while also avoiding the need for too many Lagrangian nanoparticles. A numerical uncertainty assessment method is adapted for the proposed approach. The model is validated with a simple verification case and applied to simulate a closed natural circulation loop heat exchanger operating with heating power ranging from 10 W to 50 W and nanoparticle volume fractions of 0.5% to 2%, using an Al2O3–water nanofluid. Results are compared with experimental temperature measurements and an Euler–Euler implementation of the same nanofluid. The model is also applied to simulate the natural convection inside a vertical enclosure, studied experimentally by other authors. The proposed novel approach demonstrates agreement with both experimental data and the Euler–Euler implementation, effectively capturing the overall behaviour of nanofluids. We establish, that the interplay of multiple transport phenomena, that occur in nanofluid operated devices, can be difficult to completely reproduce numerically within the framework of current modelling assumptions.

Opis: Aims and Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility, usability and acceptance of integrating Clinical Decision Support Systems with Socially Assistive Robots into hospital grand rounds. Background: Adopting Clinical Decision Support Systems in healthcare faces challenges such as complexity, poor integration with workflows, and concerns about data privacy and quality. Issues such as too many alerts, confusing errors, and difficulty using the technology in front of patients make adoption challenging and prevent it from fitting into daily workflows. Making Clinical Decision Support System simple, intuitive and user-friendly is essential to enable its use in daily practice to improve patient care and decision-making. Methods: This six-month pilot study had two participant groups, with total of 40 participants: a longitudinal intervention group (n =8) and a single-session evaluation group (n=32). Participants were medical doctors at the University Clinical Center Maribor. The intervention involved implementing a Clinical Decision Support System delivered via a Socially Assistive Robot during hospital grand rounds. We developed a system that employed the HL7 FHIR standard for integrating data from hospital monitors, electronic health records, and patient-reported outcomes into a single dashboard. A Pepper-based SAR provided patient specific recommendations through a voice and SAR tablet enabled interface. Key evaluation metrics were assessed using the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance, Use of Technology (UTAUT2) questionnaire, including Effort Expectancy, Performance Expectancy and open ended questions. The longitudinal group used the system for 6 months and completed the assessments twice, after one week and at the end of the study. The single-session group completed the assessment once, immediately after the experiment. Qualitative data were gathered through open-ended questions. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and thematic analysis. Results: System usability was rated highly across both groups, with the longitudinal group reporting consistently excellent scores (M =82.08 at final evaluation) compared to the acceptable scores of the single-session group (M =68.96). Extended exposure improved user engagement, reflected in significant increases in Effort Expectancy and Habit over time. Participants found the system enjoyable to use, and while no significant changes were seen in Performance Expectancy, feedback emphasized its efficiency in saving time and improving access to clinical data, supporting its feasibility and acceptability. Conclusions: This research supports the potential of robotic technologies to transform CDSS into more interactive, efficient, and user-friendly tools for healthcare professionals. The paper also suggests further research directions and technical improvements to maximize the impact of innovative technologies in healthcare.

Izidor Mlakar, Igor Robert Roj, Vojko Flis, Valentino Šafran, Urška Smrke, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Objectives: To evaluate the impact of different types of demonstrations (no demonstration, video demonstration, and face-to-face demonstration) on nurses’ acceptance, trust, and ethical considerations regarding socially assistive robots. Methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental design involving 312 nurses: 201 with no exposure to socially assistive robots, 97 exposed via video demonstrations, and 14 exposed through live face-to-face demonstrations in a hospital room. Participants completed self-report measures assessing their perceptions of ethical acceptability, trust, and acceptance of socially assistive robots. Results: Participants exposed to any kind of demonstration reported significantly higher perceptions of ethical acceptability compared to those with no exposure. Among demonstration types, live face-to-face demonstrations resulted in higher overall ethical acceptability, satisfaction, and acceptance compared to video demonstrations. Conclusions: Demonstrations, particularly face-to-face interactions, play a crucial role in fostering ethical acceptability and overall acceptance of socially assistive robots. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating live demonstrations in strategies to improve healthcare professionals’ trust and acceptance of robotic technology.

Wage function estimation of Estonia and Latvia
Gašper Kolar, Nejc Fir, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The study of wage determinants goes back to the beginning of economic science, with theoretical and empirical foundations providing the basis for the specification of a model of the wage function. Using the OLS method, we study the determinants of real wages for Estonia between 2006Q3 and 2022Q3 and Latvia between 2004Q1 and 2022Q3. The lagged dependent variable exerts the most considerable impact on real wages, i.e., real wages in the preceding quarter. We find that unemployment has a relatively larger impact on real wage dynamics than real productivity in the Latvian than in Estonian model. In the Estonian model, real productivity has a relatively stronger impact than unemployment in explaining real wages. In both countries, changes in real productivity impact real wages with a one-quarter lag. The findings on the relative influence of real wage determinants guide economic policymakers in targeting measures that could increase real wages in both countries.

Assessing fiscal sustainability with panel unit root, cointegration, and Granger causality tests : evidence from the broader groups of countries
Nejc Fir, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The question of fiscal sustainability of countries has become one of the central topics in economic policy, especially in times of increasing public debts. One way to assess fiscal sustainability is to examine compliance with the intertemporal budget constraint, which involves testing the stationarity of government revenues and expenditures, the primary budget balance, and the first differences of public debt. Part of this approach includes testing cointegration and causality among different pairs of variables. Under this approach, the paper is focused on both first- and second-generation panel unit root tests, cointegration, and Granger causality test. This paper focuses on assessing the fiscal sustainability of four panels of countries divided by continents: Europe, Asia and Oceania, Africa, and Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America. It has been found that fiscal sustainability is present in all the broader groups of countries considered but in a weak form. Fiscal sustainability was confirmed when considering a constant in calculations, while deviations were observed among groups of countries when both a constant and trend were considered. The study serves as a starting point for a more extensive analysis of fiscal sustainability. For more accurate findings, it would be necessary to categorize countries into smaller and economically more homogeneous groups and analyze them using other fiscal sustainability methods as well.

Opis: Interpenetrating phase composites (IPC) are materials with two or more mutually continuous, interconnected phases. This structure allows each phase to retain its properties, while together they exhibit enhanced synergistic properties. In this work, polymer-metal IPCs with Triply Periodical Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures were fabricated and tested for their mechanical properties at different impact velocities (ranging from 0.1 mm/s to 250 m/s). Samples. The samples comprise a stainless steel reinforcement phase and two polymeric matrices (silicone and epoxy). Computed tomography was used to evaluate the internal structure and the fabrication quality. The results showed that the samples were thoroughly infiltrated with polymeric filler, achieving a high degree of homogeneity in the composite. The compression tests of silicone-filled IPCs showed an increase in stiffness. Still, the Specific Energy Absorption (SEA) was not improved due to the non-optimal stiffness ratio between the polymeric matrix and the metallic reinforcement phase. However, using epoxy as the matrix resulted in the SEA enhancement of 38 %. This is attributed to the interlocking mechanism between the two phases, which improved the macroscopic mechanical properties. The compression tests showed significant strain rate hardening due to the base material’s strain rate sensitivity and the inertia effects.

Rešitve za tovorni promet v sistemih pametnih mest v Sloveniji : magistrsko delo
Nejc Krajnc, 2025, magistrsko delo

Opis: Koncept pametnega mesta postaja vedno bolj priljubljen pri reševanju najzahtevnejših urbanih problemov in spodbujanjem ekonomskega razvoja.
