Challenges of teaching primary school migrant students basic English

Opis: Educational institutions carry an immense responsibility as the key institutions where migrant children start their integration process. Educational workers at schools are the ones that actualize government policies in their classrooms and directly influence migrant students’ integration process and monitor their progress. Teachers need proper education, training, and support to be able to work with migrant students successfully. Our master thesis focused and researched issues and problems teachers encounter when teaching migrant students English in the first triennium of primary school. In the first part of our thesis we defined migrant students and presented legislation and national guidelines surrounding migrant student integration. We introduced the immigration situation in Slovenska Bistrica, where a proportionally large Kosovo minority lives, and the two primary schools where we conducted our research. In the empirical part of our thesis, we interviewed four teachers that teach English in the first triennium of primary school about their experience with teaching in multicultural classrooms. Teachers rely on visual aids and mime to teach English through group activities where students actively participate through song, dance and games. The analysis of interviews showed that even though all English lessons are conducted in English, migrant students’ lack of Slovenian knowledge and their lack of socialization present the biggest problems interviewed teachers face.

Building a Brand: A Multimodal Analysis of the Brand I Feel Slovenia

Opis: This master’s thesis aims to analyse how the brand I Feel Slovenia uses verbal and visual texts to present its brand identity to the audience on its official website. Specifically, it aims to investigate how this brand uses multimodal texts to convey its core values (“Slovenian green”, “pleasant excitement” and “the elemental”); how it builds a relationship with its audience; and how verbal and visual texts contribute to the overall meaning-making in the presentation of the brand. The study uses multimodal discourse analysis to analyse five multimodal texts, which consist of verbal texts and visual texts, taken from the official website of the brand I Feel Slovenia. Both verbal and visual texts were analysed in terms of register variables (field, tenor and mode) and their intermodal connections. The analysis has shown that both verbal and visual texts convey the core values of the brand differently but are equally important in their presentation. Both types of texts build a positive relationship with the audience through the use friendly-neutral language, positive aesthetic appreciation of nature and bright, saturated colours. Both verbal and visual texts are important in the meaning-making in the presentation of the brand, although the latter draw more attention to themselves due to their size and are thus the dominant components.

The Transitional Period of the Rhetorical Presidency in the United States of America

Opis: The main objective of this master’s thesis is to compare the traditional and rhetorical presidency in the United States of America, focusing on milestones and the reasons for them. Another objective is to analyze different presidential speeches and their evolvement throughout history and different events. The master’s thesis presents an analysis of two presidential speeches given by the 25th American president William McKinley. The speeches were analyzed with regards to classical rhetorical elements based on Leith (2012), who summarizes classical rhetorical principles based on Aristotle’s Rhetoric (Aristotle ,1992) The analysis provides evidence of the shift from traditional to the rhetorical presidency, which occurred during the final stages of William McKinley’s presidency when he served as the American leader in the Spanish – American war. A handful of authors have mentioned McKinley (e.g. Robert Saldin, 2011) as the transitional president in American presidential rhetoric, however, the general literature still portrays Theodore Roosevelt as such. The analysis will provide rhetorical evidence to disprove the theory which considers Roosevelt as the beginner of the rhetorical presidency.

Didaktične igre pri učenju in poučevanju angleškega jezika v 6. razredu osnovne šole

Opis: Magistrsko delo govori o poučevanju in učenju angleščine skozi igro. Proučili smo šest vrst iger, in sicer družabne igre, predstavitvene igre, kvizi, glasbene igre in digitalne igre. Vrste iger se lahko medsebojno prepletajo; igra lahko spada v več kategorij hkrati. Učitelji lahko s pomočjo tehnologije uporabljajo tudi igre. Nedavna tehnologija, na primer uporaba interaktivnih tabel, je olajšala uporabo vseh vrst iger. Domače naloge so bistveni del učnega procesa, saj se učenje ne ustavi v šoli. Domača naloga je lahko tudi igra, zato ponujamo primere za vsako vrsto igre za poučevanje v učilnici in učenje doma – domača naloga. Namen naše raziskave je bil raziskati odnos učencev do uporabe iger pri učenju in poučevanju angleškega jezika v 6. razredu. Za zbiranje podatkov smo uporabili anketni vprašalnik. Vzorec predstavlja 642 učencev 6. razreda osnovnih šol po vsej Sloveniji. Obravnavali smo devet raziskovalnih vprašanj in postavili šest hipotez, od katerih smo jih potrdili pet. Zanimivo bi bilo raziskovati še naprej in ugotoviti, ali bi se rezultati razlikovali, če bi izbrali starejše ali mlajše učence.

Prevajanje strokovnih besedil s področja računalniške programske opreme: problemi terminologije in sloga

Opis: Strokovno izrazje slovenskega jezika je na področju naravoslovja dobro razvito. V zadnjih letih je bilo veliko narejenega tudi na področju računalništva. Izšlo je nekaj posebnih slovarjev, leksikonov in pojmovnikov. Redno izhaja kar nekaj revij o računalništvu in informatiki, dnevno časopisje objavlja številne članke, rubrike in tedenske priloge. Vse našteto je v veliko pomoč prevajalcem, ki prevajajo strokovna besedila s področja računalništva, kamor spada tudi programska oprema. Vsaka zvrst jezika je nekaj posebnega, tako je poseben tudi tehnični jezik. Pozorni moramo biti na strukturo stavkov, slog besedila, terminologijo, uporabiti moramo pravilno metodo prevajanja in upoštevati bralce ciljnega besedila. Dobro moramo poznati terminologijo. Besedila s področja računalništva in informatike so problematična, saj večina besed izhaja iz angleškega jezika, kjer nove besede nastajajo zelo hitro. Ko potrebujemo besedo v slovenskem jeziku, se velikokrat zgodi, da nimamo ustreznega prevoda ali da se prevodi, ki nastanejo, ne obdržijo v uporabi. Da bi bila prevedena besedila čim bolj razumljiva, si moramo prizadevati, da je jezik standardiziran. Vse značilnosti tehničnega prevoda iz angleškega v slovenski jezik sem zbrala in jih podrobno opisala v diplomskem delu. Če so terminologija in jezikovna pravila enotna in dosledno uporabljena, bosta prihranjena tako čas kot tudi stroški prevajanja.

Linguistic Analysis of Expressing Gender, Gender Identity, Gender Inclusiveness, and Gender Neutrality in the Context of the Transgender Phenomenon in Contemporary English and Slovene Language

Opis: This thesis explores linguistic possibilities, limitations, and innovations concerning gender and gender identity in the context of the transgender phenomenon and how gender-inclusiveness or gender-neutrality affect their expression. To avoid ambiguity and misunderstandings, the terminological basis and theoretical background are presented and critically analysed, including English and Slovene sources; moreover, it is specified how certain terms are used in the following discussions. The thesis looks at early examples of gender-inclusive and gender-neutral English language as well as contemporary usages and innovations, especially in the field of alternative personal pronouns, and evaluates their practicality. Furthermore, linguistic and other issues are discussed in relation to the common transgender ideology through the analysis of selected examples of transgender people’s memoirs and other personal narratives (YouTube content), presenting their common perception of the state of being transgender and noting the stereotypies this entails or perpetuates. In relation to this, the thesis also reviews a recent study on the topic of transgender children’s gender development. The thesis then compares Slovene with English in the context of expressing gender to show some differences between them and notes certain grammatical and other limitations of Slovene. Additionally, the thesis provides its author’s own suggestions for English as well as Slovene gender-neutral language.

Članki listicles kot nova besedilna vrsta časopisnih člankov

Opis: Listicle je sklop angleških besed article in listki. Članki listicle so zlasti priljubljeni na svetovnem spletu, vedno bolj prodirajo tudi v tiskane medije. V magistrski nalogi smo raziskali, v kolikšni meri je izraz listicle poznan bralcem. Zanimalo nas je tudi, ali bralci raje berejo »navadne« članke ali to novejšo obliko članka in kakšna je povezava med priljubljenostjo članka in stopnjo izobrazbe posameznika ter spolom. Pri raziskovanju smo si pomagali s spletno anketo na portalu 1KA. Ker pa nas je tudi zanimalo, v kolikšni meri je izraz listicle znan maternim govorcem, smo anketo zasnovali tudi v angleškem jeziku. Anketo v obeh jezikih smo anketirancem posredovali po elektronski pošti in delili na družbenem omrežju Facebook. Da smo pridobili odgovore anketirancev starejše populacije, smo anketo tudi natisnili in jim jo dali v reševanje. Poleg socialnega vidika v povezavi s članki listicle nas je zanimalo, kaj imajo skupnega z »navadnimi« članki in kakšna je njihova berljivost na lestvici berljivosti od 0 do 100. Na dveh internetnih straneh smo izbrali 10 člankov in jih vstavili v spletno računalo za berljivost, ki izda tudi tehnične podatke o posameznem članku, torej koliko povedi, besed, težkih besed idr. vsebuje članek. Analiza je pokazala, da je nova zvrst člankov lahko berljiva in razumljiva vsem, ki določen jezik obvladajo v tolikšni meri, da se znajo v njem sporazumevati.

Language of Appraisal in Book Reviews: A Case Study

Opis: This master’s thesis presents an analysis of appraisal in the case of ten book reviews. Their selection is based on several criteria that make them representative of this text type. The selected texts evaluate novels, novellas and short stories that were ranked top 300 according to the Open Syllabus Project 2.0 online data base. This means that they fall into the category of the most often assigned books in educational institutions. The authors of the selected texts are editors, journalists and writers, and there is an even number of male and female reviewers. The purpose of the study is the appraisal analysis of the contemporary English language; therefore, only the recently published texts were selected. The main methodology used in this master’s thesis is the appraisal theory developed by James Martin and Peter White (Martin and White). This theory evolved in the systemic functional linguistics, and it relies on the theoretical concepts of Michael Halliday (Halliday). The appraisal analysis was conducted with help of the analytical tool Catma 5.0, which enables annotation of texts, their analysis and the visualization of data. The results of the research show that the most frequently used attitudinal resources are the expressions of appreciation. Therefore, the evaluation of the story and everything associated with it is in the foreground of the book reviews. The analysis of the selected texts reveals that evaluation is mostly explicit, meaning that the reader is directly invited to engage with the book. The findings indicate that the attitudinal resources are graded more according to intensity and quantity and less according to prototypicality and marginality. This conclusion draws attention to the variety of lexical and grammatical structures in the selected texts that are assumed to be characteristic of this text type in general. The results also show that the reviewers do not include many external sources into the text, which consequently narrows down the dialogistic space and excludes alternative views and attitudes. The appraisal analysis points toward the text-structural and semantic characteristics of book reviews in general. The structure of the selected texts consists of the following elements: information about the author and the book, the plot summary and evaluation of these elements, which are often intertwined. Some reviews also include personal accounts, book details and/or numeric ratings. The most significant semantic characteristic of evaluation expressed in the selected book reviews is the critique of the Western oppressor. The reviewers judge crimes against humanity and question Western perspectives. They also imply the complicity of the readers because they are viewed as members of the Western identity. Additionally, the results of the analysis show that the book reviews are contextual and intertextual text types, which include various means for the realization of appraisal. A vast spectrum of lexical and grammatical structures makes book reviews an interesting research topic with many possibilities for further research.

Diskurzni okvir v predsedniški retoriki Donalda Trumpa

Opis: This Master’s Thesis engages in research of Donald Trump’s presidential rhetoric from the perspective of evaluative framing in rhetoric. The analysis stems from Jim A. Kuypers’ theory of framing from a rhetorical perspective and J.R. Martin and P.R.R. White’s theory of language evaluation. The corpus for analysis consists of three speeches delivered by President Trump in 2017; these speeches are Inaugural Address, Remarks by President Trump on the Administration’s National Security Strategy (“America First Speech”), and Ohio Rally Speech 2017. The theoretical part consists of presenting the theory of framing as a rhetorical perspective, followed by short introduction of the theory of language evaluation. Donald Trump’s rhetoric style and characteristics are also included separately. The empirical part presents the analysis of the corpus. The research consists of two parts; the first part presents the analysis of subjects and objects and how are they framed. Furthermore, this part also detects which frames are present in the discourse. The second part consist of a discussion of results and an analysis of detected evaluative frames. It has been established that Trump’s addresses frame the President’s persona into a saviour-like figure, which offers powerful protection, security and restoration from the decay the previous administrations, supposedly, caused.
