Identification of influential invaders in evolutionary populations
Guoli Yang, Tina Perc Benko, Matteo Cavaliere, Jincai Huang, Matjaž Perc, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The identification of the most influential nodes has been a vibrant subject of research across the whole of network science. Here we map this problem to structured evolutionary populations, where strategies and the interaction network are both subject to change over time based on social inheritance. We study cooperative communities, which cheaters can invade because they avoid the cost of contributions that are associated with cooperation. The question that we seek to answer is at which nodes cheaters invade most successfully. We propose the weighted degree decomposition to identify and rank the most influential invaders. More specifically, we distinguish two kinds of ranking based on the weighted degree decomposition. We show that a ranking strategy based on negative-weighted degree allows to successfully identify the most influential invaders in the case of weak selection, while a ranking strategy based on positive-weighted degree performs better when the selection is strong. Our research thus reveals how to identify the most influential invaders based on statistical measures in dynamically evolving cooperative communities.

Dual mode of action of acetylcholine on cytosolic calcium oscillations in pancreatic beta and acinar cells in situ
Nastja Sluga, Sandra Postić, Srdjan Sarikas, Ya-Chi Huang, Andraž Stožer, Marjan Rupnik, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Cholinergic innervation in the pancreas controls both the release of digestive enzymes to support the intestinal digestion and absorption, as well as insulin release to promote nutrient use in the cells of the body. The effects of muscarinic receptor stimulation are described in detail for endocrine beta cells and exocrine acinar cells separately. Here we describe morphological and functional criteria to separate these two cell types in situ in tissue slices and simultaneously measure their response to ACh stimulation on cytosolic Ca2+ oscillations [Ca2+]c in stimulatory glucose conditions. Our results show that both cell types respond to glucose directly in the concentration range compatible with the glucose transporters they express. The physiological ACh concentration increases the frequency of glucose stimulated [Ca2+]c oscillations in both cell types and synchronizes [Ca2+]c oscillations in acinar cells. The supraphysiological ACh concentration further increases the oscillation frequency on the level of individual beta cells, inhibits the synchronization between these cells, and abolishes oscillatory activity in acinar cells. We discuss possible mechanisms leading to the observed phenomena.

Background purification framework with extended morphological attribute profile for hyperspectral anomaly detection
Ju Huang, Kang Liu, Mingliang Xu, Matjaž Perc, Xuelong Li, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Hyperspectral anomaly detection has attracted extensive interests for its wide use in military and civilian fields, and three main categories of detection methods have been developed successively over past few decades, including statistical model-based, representation-based, and deep-learning-based methods. Most of these algorithms are essentially trying to construct proper background profiles, which describe the characteristics of background and then identify the pixels that do not conform to the profiles as anomalies. Apparently, the crucial issue is how to build an accurate background profile; however, the background profiles constructed by existing methods are not accurate enough. In this article, a novel and universal background purification framework with extended morphological attribute profiles is proposed. It explores the spatial characteristic of image and removes suspect anomaly pixels from the image to obtain a purified background. Moreover, three detectors with this framework covering different categories are also developed. The experiments implemented on four real hyperspectral images demonstrate that the background purification framework is effective, universal, and suitable. Furthermore, compared with other popular algorithms, the detectors with the framework perform well in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Emergence of target waves in paced populations of cyclically competing species
Luo-Luo Jiang, Tao Zhou, Matjaž Perc, Xin Huang, Bing-Hong Wang, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We investigate the emergence of target waves in a cyclic predator-prey model incorporating a periodic current of the three competing species in a small area situated at the center of a square lattice. The periodic current acts as a pacemaker, trying to impose its rhythm on the overall spatiotemporal evolution of the three species. We show that the pacemaker is able to nucleate target waves that eventually spread across the whole population, whereby three routes leading to this phenomenon can be distinguished depending on the mobility of the three species and the oscillation period of the localized current. First, target waves can emerge due to the synchronization between the periodic current and oscillations of the density of the three species on the spatial grid. The second route is similar to the first, the difference being that the synchronization sets in only intermittently. Finally, the third route toward target waves is realized when the frequency of the pacemaker is much higher than that characterizing the oscillations of the overall density of the three species. By considering the mobility and frequency of the current as variable parameters, we thus provide insights into the mechanisms of pattern formation resulting from the interplay between local and global dynamics in systems governed by cyclically competing species.

Linearizability conditions of a time-reversible quartic-like system
Xingwu Chen, Wentao Huang, Valery Romanovski, Weinian Zhang, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this paper we study the linearizability problem of polynomial-like complex differential systems. We give a reduction of linearizability problem of such non-polynomial systems to the problem of polynomial systems. Applying this reduction, we find some linearizability conditions for a time-reversible quartic-like complex system and derive from them conditions of isochronous center for the corresponding real system.
