The potential of video games for vocabulary acquisition among secondary school students : m. a. thesis

Opis: V magistrski nalogi smo se osredinili na potencial video iger kot medijev za pasivno usvajanje besedišča pri dijakih, dijakinjah v srednji šoli. Delo se nanaša na učitelje, učiteljice srednješolcev, ki so dovzetnejši za takšen način učenja. Video igre imajo potencial pri izboljšanju besedišča dijakov izven učilnice. Številne raziskave na področju usvajanja besedišča so bile narejene v kontekstu medosebne interakcije v večigralskih video igrah, v magistrskem delu pa smo se osredinili na enoigralske, kjer lahko učenci s pomočjo zgodb v video igrah izboljšajo obstoječe in pridobivajo novo besedišče. V magistrski nalogi smo zastavili tri hipoteze. Prvo in drugo hipotezo smo potrdili v empiričnem delu, tretjo pa v teoretičnem. Magistrsko delo se osredotoča na izboljševanje besedišča, usvojenega v učilnici, in ga primerja z besediščem video iger in besediščem izbranih in potrjenih učbenikov za poučevanje angleščine od drugega letnika srednje šole dalje. Prav tako nudi vpogled v potencial video iger za usvajanje besedišča pri pouku angleščine in daje učiteljem priporočila, kako video igre koristno uporabiti pri pouku angleščine.

A collection of magical tales in upper primary school EFL classroom : master's thesis

Opis: Nobody knows for certain where and when people started telling stories; however, people of all ages enjoy them. It has been proven that stories can be useful in any classroom as they are a powerful teaching tool. Language teachers are known for using them frequently, since they do not just motivate the students but also develop their reading skills. Stories can be used as stand-alone study material that provides everything for teaching a topic, or they can be additional material that enriches the lesson. Teachers are more likely to work with pre-prepared materials that are readily available than to make their own. As a future English teacher, I would like to incorporate my love for books into my lessons; therefore, I have researched the appropriateness of J.K. Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard for teaching EFL in upper primary schools in Slovenia. First, I presented theoretical background about stories, Slovenian primary schools, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, and choosing an appropriate story for classroom use. In the practical section, I analysed the appropriateness of The Tales of Beedle the Bard for teaching EFL and prepared some lesson plans for teaching EFL with The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

The Use of Storybooks in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Primary Level (2nd AND 3rd Grade) in Slovene Primary Schools : master thesis

Opis: This Master’s Thesis deals with the topic of teaching English as a foreign language to young language learners with the use of storybooks/a story-based approach. It has been produced with the intent to encourage and persuade English teachers of young language learners (in Slovenia) to introduce this approach to their early foreign language lessons, by offering a detailed overview of the advantages a story-based approach brings to the context of foreign language instruction, and to serve as a handbook, guiding them through the recommendations for the selection of appropriate storybooks, the preparation for storytelling/storyreading and its implementation, with additional emphasis on the importance of choosing and incorporating suitable story-related activities to each stage of the storytelling/reading act. Moreover, concerns teachers might have when first starting to use this approach, such as whether or not the learner's first language should be used in the story-based lessons, and how many times the same story can be presented to the learners, have been touched on, as well. Furthermore, the Master’s Thesis provides a selection of ready-to-use story-based lesson plans, prepared around chosen storybooks, all made to fit the goals/aims of foreign language instruction at primary level in the 2nd and 3rd grade in Slovene primary schools.

Metaphorical language and Alzheimer's disease in Lisa Genova's novel Still Alice : m. a. thesis

Opis: The thesis analyses metaphorical language in Lisa Genova’s novel Still Alice. It aims to explain in what ways metaphorical language contributes to the portrayal of Alzheimer’s disease, especially from the point of view of the protagonist, Alice. Alice is 50 years old and at the prime of her career as a professor and researcher when she is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The novel focuses on her experience of the progressing disease and the way it influences her relationships with her husband and three children. Since scientific terminology is frequently used in the novel, one part of the thesis explains medical terms closely connected to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Another section describes various common portrayals of the two concepts in literature and media, because these reveal the general and stereotypical perception of Alzheimer’s disease and its stigmatized patients. These portrayals are connected to themes of water imagery, apocalyptic imagery or imagery of war or crime. The thesis attempts to discover whether such portrayals are also used within the metaphorical language of the novel, specifically in those excerpts that include either Alzheimer’s disease explicitly or other abstract and physical entities that are connected to the disease.

Death Personified: Comparison of Death’s Characterisation in Selected Literature and European Folktales : master thesis

Opis: This thesis analyses the character of Death in selected literary works based on Kastenbaum and Aisenberg’s typology of death’s personifications as set in 1972 (the Macabre, Gay Deceiver, the Automaton, Gentle Comforter), the attitudes presented within the texts, and how they compare to other contemporary portrayals of Death. The thesis focuses on eight literary works wherein death is personified through content analysis and the use of the comparative method, which showed multiple similarities among death personifications in terms of gender, appearance, manner of collecting the dead, and what attitudes are expressed towards the character. Death, when given a physical appearance, was predominantly male, with attributes reminiscent of the Grim Reaper. All personifications contained elements of the Macabre type (8 of 8), and none could be categorised under only one type. The second most represented type is the Automaton (4), followed by the Gay Deceiver (3), and Gentle Comforter (2). The thesis also included the addition of the Superhero – Comedic type by Cantù (2). These portrayals of death’s character correspond to ones present in contemporary works and implement traits from past depictions, including attitudes towards death, alongside their own unique interpretation.

Representation of gender through visual imagery in primary school English textbooks from Slovene and English publishers : master's thesis

Opis: Textbooks are the foundation for teaching. Even though the use of interactive online materials is increasing, most teachers base their lessons on printed materials, most frequently textbooks, since these offer well-structured, organized and ready-made materials. However, textbooks also include cultural beliefs and values that impact children’s perception of the world and themselves. This thesis focuses on how textbooks present gender through visual imagery and what message they deliver to developing young individuals that rely on school and textbooks to provide models they can follow. The research is based on a comparison of 8 textbooks – Slovene publisher’s textbooks and those published by English publishing houses – concerning their use of stereotypical and sexist illustrations. We provide a theoretical background to the problem and highlight the importance of school and textbooks for forming gender identity. The empirical part of the thesis offers a descriptive analysis supported by feature coding and shows whether the attempts to eliminate gender differences in the classroom have been successful.

Urška Pintarič, 2015, magistrsko delo

Opis: V magistrski nalogi smo analizirali dve deli, ki jih je napisala avtorica Alison Bechdel, naslovljeni Fun home in Are you my mother? Z analizo slike in besede smo v celotni noveli opredelili izraze ženskosti in moškosti ter ugotavljali, ali slednji sovpadajo s spolom ali odstopajo od ustrezne družbene definicije spola in pripadajočih lastnosti. Poleg tega smo se osredotočili tako na iskanje identitete avtorice kot tudi na iskanje identitete njenega očeta. Predstavili smo možnost samozdravljenja s pomočjo ustvarjanja grafičnih novel in določili, ali je prišlo do podobnega rezultata v primeru Alison Bechdel.

Gender Stereotypes in Children's Literature: A Comparative Analysis of the Most Borrowed and Best-Selling Children's Picture Books

Opis: Picture books are among the first media where children learn about the world around and inside them. It is thus important that what is presented to them be accurate and cause no harm. However, that is exactly what is happening – children are exposed to certain stereotypes that do not hold true for the men and women, who are attributed these gender stereotypes. When children are taught that men are strong and women are weak, they grow up thinking in that way, which causes even further stereotyping and prejudice to occur. In this thesis, I consider why it is important to expose children to diverse plots and characters which differ from stereotypes of female caretakers, mothers, and teachers, and strong, male money-makers. It is not only female characters that are painted negatively, but also the male characters who are sometimes painted as absent fathers. This thesis offers an empirical approach through descriptive analysis and feature coding, supported by a theoretical background. It is imperative to call attention to work that is not appropriate for our siblings, children and students. It is our responsibility to provide them with good quality literature that paints the world as it should be – egalitarian—or at least, as it currently is.

Mind Style Analysis of Emma Donoghue's Protagonist in the Novel Room

Opis: Emma Donoghue’s main character and narrator in Room is a literary construct with a severely deviant mind style that portrays a unique outlook on the world. The protagonist is a five-year-old boy who has been living in extreme social isolation his whole life. His mother was kidnapped, locked in a room and repeatedly raped and gave birth to a son named Jack. The dissertation analyses and outlines the deviant features of his mind style. The analysis later focuses on the underlying reason that inspired or even provoked the author to construct such a deviant mind style. Two possible phenomena are introduced as the basis for the analysis. The first theory that is researched and then compared to the constructed mind style, is the theory of feral people, individuals living in extreme social isolation. Certain cases were supposedly raised by animals, others contained in small spaces without human contact. The second possible theory explaining Donoghue’s unique mind style construction, is an autistic disorder. Characteristics of feral and autistic individuals are often similar and sometimes even overlap, which is why this phenomenon was chosen as an alternative option for the basis of the construction of Jack’s mind style. The dissertation finally tries to determine, whether a feral or autistic nature can be ascribed to the protagonist, and to what extent he pertains to either theory.

Linguistic Analysis of Expressing Gender, Gender Identity, Gender Inclusiveness, and Gender Neutrality in the Context of the Transgender Phenomenon in Contemporary English and Slovene Language

Opis: This thesis explores linguistic possibilities, limitations, and innovations concerning gender and gender identity in the context of the transgender phenomenon and how gender-inclusiveness or gender-neutrality affect their expression. To avoid ambiguity and misunderstandings, the terminological basis and theoretical background are presented and critically analysed, including English and Slovene sources; moreover, it is specified how certain terms are used in the following discussions. The thesis looks at early examples of gender-inclusive and gender-neutral English language as well as contemporary usages and innovations, especially in the field of alternative personal pronouns, and evaluates their practicality. Furthermore, linguistic and other issues are discussed in relation to the common transgender ideology through the analysis of selected examples of transgender people’s memoirs and other personal narratives (YouTube content), presenting their common perception of the state of being transgender and noting the stereotypies this entails or perpetuates. In relation to this, the thesis also reviews a recent study on the topic of transgender children’s gender development. The thesis then compares Slovene with English in the context of expressing gender to show some differences between them and notes certain grammatical and other limitations of Slovene. Additionally, the thesis provides its author’s own suggestions for English as well as Slovene gender-neutral language.
