The Influence of English on the Language of Croatian Influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok Social Media : master's thesis
Ena Cilar, 2023, master's thesis

Abstract: The rapid spread of the English language, which is frequently referred to as a lingua franca, has had a significant impact on other languages and the peculiar language of computer-mediated communication. What is more, the Internet, social media and digital influencers are the key agents of both language change and changes in the modern society. Due to the globally growing popularity of social media influencers, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which their language use is affected by the globality of English, with a focus on Croatian influencers. Therefore, data for this paper are drawn from altogether 270 social media posts published by the eight most successful Croatian influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The research methods include linguistic, thematic and content analysis. The results reveal that the use of ‘ad hoc loanwords’ and intra-sentential code-switching are more common among Croatian influencers in comparison with outdated Anglicisms and inter-sentential code-switching. While the most frequently used loanwords among Croatian influencers belong to the categories of cyberculture and popular culture, the use of loanwords belonging to particular semantic fields is not strongly related to their thematic content categories. The importance and originality of this thesis are that it is the first study to provide new insights into the language use of Croatian influencers in relation with English as a global and leading online language. However, due to practical constraints, it is limited in terms of the research sample size and generalizability, which offers implications for further research.

Izvor in jezikovne značilnosti novozelandske angleščine
Barbara Čatar, 2017, master's thesis

Abstract: Angleščina je globalni jezik.

Racial, cultural, and linguistic aspects of rap music : master's thesis
Luka Kovač, 2022, master's thesis

Abstract: At the beginning of the master's thesis, we will deal with this topic, i.e., the pioneers of the development of rap music. Above all, we will be interested in how this development took place in a cultural sense and how African-American culture influenced it. This cultural as well as sociological aspect will be present throughout the thesis. In the master's thesis, we will also use the title hip Hop music. The term rap has historically been used more for commercial purposes, while the term hip hop has a more cultural background. Rap music was heavily influenced by disco music, among other things, as disco also emphasized the key role of DJs in creating songs and mixes for dancers. While early disco music was strongly associated with African-American and Italian-American culture, which developed mainly in subculture clubs, a trend began in the 1970s, when expensively recorded disco songs produced by the increasingly popular music industry took over. The first few initial chapters will focus on this topic. It is virtually impossible to talk about hip hop or rap music without mentioning AAVE (African-American Vernacular English). Many African-Americans are living in the US. Their ancestors, or at least most of them, came to the USA as slaves. They were brought to Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, and then a continuous stream of slaves was present until 1808, when the slave trade was abolished. These waves of enslaved Africans did not speak English but their local languages. When they arrived in the USA, they learned English, the dominant language. Linguists' assumptions differ to this day regarding how successful they were in acquiring the new language and how much their local languages in Africa influenced them. In this thesis, we will elaborate on the different theories regarding the origin of AAVE and its grammatical and phonetic features. We will also devote a good part of the thesis to an essential part of the history of rap music, namely the rivalry between the US East Coast rap and US West Coast rap. Finally, we will add another chapter where we will briefly outline the development of rap music in Slovenia. We will focus on the lyrics in the second empirical part of the thesis, where we will highlight some of the selected songs. We will compare and analyze the compositions. We will focus more extensively on the linguistic features, as these make rap music stand out compared to other musical genres. We will also look at the specific characteristics of rap lyrics compared to different genres.

THE USE OF MEDICAL ACRONYMS AND INITIALISMS IN THE AMERICAN TV SERIES HOUSE MD
Santina Raner, 2017, master's thesis

Abstract: The present thesis is based on the use of medical acronyms and initialisms in the American TV series House MD as compared to that of medical doctors in Slovenia. The main aim is to determine which medical acronyms are most frequently used in the series and whether they coincide with the acronyms that Slovene doctors use in their work. The second aim is to establish the prevalent language of origin for medical acronyms and initialisms. The theoretical part of the thesis begins with a brief history of acronyms and initialisms, followed by a list of word-formation processes, pronunciation issues and the use of articles with acronyms. The practical part is divided into two sections. The first section covers the transcriptions of the second season of House MD with its twenty-four episodes, where every episode is accompanied by a short data analysis that presents all the medical acronyms featured in the episode. The analysis also includes information as to whether the acronyms are explained in the course of the show, and who uses them (medical or non-medical staff). The second section features four interviews with Slovene doctors from various medical fields (from emergency doctors, physiatrist to veterinarian). The interviews were conducted in Slovene, but the English translations are provided as well for foreign readers. The main focus of the thesis is on determining which medical acronyms are most commonly used, which are loanwords, and the impact of social status on the use of acronyms in speech.

Euphemisms in the TV Series Grey’s Anatomy and House M.D.: Analysis of Selected Episodes
Živa Rizmal, 2021, master's thesis

Abstract: The master’s thesis examines euphemisms in broadcast media: two American medical TV series – Grey’s Anatomy and House M.D. The main purpose of this thesis was to examine the use of euphemistic vocabulary in TV dialogue. By examining euphemistic words and phrases in selected episodes, we sought to provide insight into current euphemism use. Euphemistic references used in the TV series reflect social attitudes towards the concepts hidden behind euphemisms. We have identified 92 different euphemisms, which appeared 182 times altogether. The relatively frequent use of euphemisms in the TV series corpus may be attributed to the sensitive or taboo topics discussed (e.g., death, bodily functions, body parts, diseases, and sex). The analysis showed that most euphemisms found in the TV series corpus are sex related. Moreover, there are not many examples where euphemisms are used as a form of doublespeak or political correctness. The results suggest that TV scriptwriters employ euphemisms in their scripts for various reasons at both levels – that of the characters and that of the viewers. The analysed euphemisms most commonly fulfil the protective function at both levels, which means they are used to shield the listener from unpleasant words and avoid offense. A wide variety of euphemism formation types is used in the selected episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and House M.D. – most notably implication, metaphor, and particularisation. Furthermore, we analysed gender differences in the frequency of euphemism use in the TV series. The results showed that in the TV series corpus, male characters employ more euphemisms than female characters.

Pod drobnogled so bili vzeti priljubljeni slovenski spletni mediji 24 ur, Cosmopolitan, Delo, Dnevnik, Dolenjski list, RTV Slo, Siol.net, Slovenske novice, Zadovoljna si, Žurnal in Večer.

Analiza humorja v britanskih stand up komedijah
Lora Nadelsberger, 2019, master's thesis

Abstract: Stand up komedija postaja v zadnjem času vedno bolj priljubljena oblika zabave. Zametke stand up komedije najdemo v humornih predavanjih Marka Twaina v 19. stoletju. Namen magistrske naloge je raziskati značilnosti humorja v britanski stand up komediji. V teoretičnem delu so obravnavane značilnosti britanskega humorja in značilnosti stand-up komedije. Empirični del naloge vključuje analizo treh britanskih stand up komedij. Na listi stotih najbolj smešnih britanskih in irskih komikov so bili izbrani naslednji trije komiki: Jack Whitehall, Ricky Gervais in Jimmy Carr. Stand up komedije izbranih komikov so dostopne na spletni strani Netflix.com. Izbrane stand up komedije so bile analizirane od začetka do približno štiridesete minute, kar skupaj nanese približno dve uri gradiva. Grozljive teme črnega humorja, uporabljene v izbranih stand up komedijah, so: spolna zloraba otrok, invalidnost, pedofilija, pritlikavost, kronične bolezni, spolno prenosljive bolezni, izkoriščanje otroške delovne sil ipd.

Sloglish or the mixing/switching of Slovene and English in Slovene blogs
Nada Šabec, 2009, original scientific article

Abstract: The article discusses the impact of the Internet on language use and, more specifically, analyzes the frequent mixing/switching of Slovene and English in Slovene blogs (so-called Sloglish). This new discourse type, combining elements of written and oral communication, is highly interactive in nature and allows for flexibility, variation and language innovation. On the other hand, some see it as too globalized and uniform as well as a threat to the language norm. Slovene blogs are analyzed linguistically (vocabulary, syntax, spelling, punctuation) and interpreted from the sociolinguistic and pragmatic perspectives (the issue of personal, cultural and social identities of bloggers; local vs. global).
