Deformation analysis of bridges in exceptional transport in Slovenia

Opis: In August 1999 an exceptional transportation of two steamers of 666 tonnes was performed from the Port of Koper to the Nuclear power plant in Krško. The transport covered a distance of about 200km and represented one of the largest exceptional transports in Slovenia ever. Finding the best route represented one of the major issues, because the steamers had to cross more than 50 problematic sections and bridges, most of which have not been designed for such heavy loads. It was necessary to load-test almost all bridges on the route to determine whether those bridges need any extra supports or not. Consequently, a logistic operator has an important and indispensable role and becomes a co-modeller of logistic service. A deformation analysis or a polynomial interpolation of vertical displacements could also be used. Therefore, a laboratory load test of a concrete plate was made. The concrete plate was loaded with hydraulic cylinder PZ 100 with extensiometer up to 21kN. Every increase of load by 3kN was measured with Nikon Ser 800 total station.

Computer-supported modelling of multimodal transportation networks rationalization

Opis: This paper deals with issues of shaping and functioning of computer programs in the modelling and solving of multimodal transportation network problems. A methodology of an integrated use of a programming language for mathematical modelling is defined, as well as spreadsheets for the solving of complex multimodal transportation network problems. The paper contains a comparison of the partial and integral methods of solving multimodal transportation networks. The basic hypothesis set forth in this paper is that the integral method results in better multimodal transportation network rationalization effects, whereas a multimodal transportation network model based on the integral method, once built, can be used as the basis for all kinds of transportation problems within multimodal transport. As opposed to linear transport problems, multimodal transport network can assume very complex shapes. This paper contains a comparison of the partial and integral approach to transportation network solving. In the partial approach, a straight forward model of a transportation network, which can be solved through the use of the Solver computer tool within the Excel spreadsheet interface, is quite sufficient. In the solving of a multimodal transportation problem through the integral method it is necessary to apply sophisticated mathematical modelling programming languages which support the use of complex matrix functions and the processing of a vast amount of variables and limitations. The LINGO programming language is more abstract than the Excel spreadsheet, and it requires a certain programming knowledge. The definition and presentation of a problem logic within Excel, in a manner which is acceptable to computer software, is an ideal basis, for modelling in the LINGO programming language, as well as a faster and more effective implementation of the mathematical model. This paper provides proof for the fact that it is more rational to solve the problem of multimodal transportation networks by using the integral, rather than the partial method.

An approach to the safety problem of railway-road crossings in the transport system

Opis: The paper presents an approach to the problem of railway-road level crossings. The goal is to improve safety in the transport system network, which includes a considerable number of "inadequately protected" crossings. The single crossing, in its abstract sense, is considered to be a system consisting of four subsystems: the external world, the crossing in its strict sense of the word, the railway and the road. The system analysis of the problem is based on an exhaustive set of bibliography, listed at the end of the paper. This analysis leads to many findings and those exerting the greatest impact are selected as the basis for the synthesis. The synthesis proposes a triangle of variables: time period, critical points on the railway network and the value of the risk indicator. This simple model may include also other variables by converting relevant values. The main result is the risk indicator over the network. It can be used for various scenarios, thus enabling their mutual comparison as well as application in investment studies.

Alternative possibilities for defining the length of the separate left-turn lane at the existing level intersection

Opis: The market offers various computer programs for simulating traffic flows at level intersections whose mathematical background is not known to the end users. Thus the user only enters the data without being aware of how the program works. The results obtained cannot be evaluated properly, which may lead to subjective decisions. The paper presents some simple mathematical alternatives which are used to determine the length of a left-turn lane in a level intersection.

Uporaba avtentičnih besedil pri predavanjih in vajah iz tujega strokovnega jezika na tehniških fakultetah

Opis: Za uspešnost pri vsakem študiju je prav gotovo zelo pomembna bralna pismenost, ta pa glede na najnovejše raziskave upada. Pri slabši bralni pismenosti je na vseh ravneh izobraževanja tudi učenje oteženo in daje slabše rezultate. Da bi izboljšali bralno pismenost na tehniških fakultetah, lahko pri predavanjih in vajah iz tujega jezika stroke uvedemo delo z avtentičnimi besedili. Strokovni članki vsebujejo teme, ki so študentom zanimive in tako vzpodbujajo branje. So avtentično gradivo in so dostikrat v primerjavi z učbeniki aktualnejši, saj se stroka oziroma znanost hitro razvijata. Primerni so tako za delo z večjimi kot z manjšimi skupinami študentov. V prispevku navajava nekaj primerov uporabe člankov pri predavanjih oziroma vajah iz tujega strokovnega jezika: individualno delo, delo v parih in skupinsko delo. Delo z avtentičnimi besedili pa ne razvija samo jezikovnih kompetenc, ampak ima tudi sociološki vidik, saj spodbuja sodelovanje med študenti, kadar ti delajo v skupinah. Lektor se odloči za najprimernejšo strategijo pri obravnavi besedila oziroma kombinacijo le-teh. Pomembno je, da bralno razumevanje utrjujemo z izborom ustreznih vaj. Tematika besedil je tudi izvrstna iztočnica za govor. Pri takšnem delu pa se lahko zgodi, da bodisi zaradi prevelike skupine študentov ali zaradi dejstva, da jezikovno šibkejši študenti težje sledijo, ne dosegamo optimalnih rezultatov. Lektorji za delo izberemo takšne članke, ki so v realnem odnosu do stroke in njene vsebine. Avtentični teksti morajo študente usposobiti, da razumejo tipične oblike besedil, ki so značilne za jezik stroke in da so sposobni to znanje praktično uporabiti v podobnih situacijah. Avtentična nepredelana besedila izkazujejo vse strukturne značilnosti strokovnega jezika in omogočajo veliko možnosti predelav in prilagoditev. Isti članek lahko uporabimo v različnih okoliščinah, če pripravimo različne naloge. Za predavanja oziroma vaje so avtentična pisna besedila za določeno stroko lahko dosegljiva in jih je moč hitro posodobiti, dodati nove informacije in/ali spremeniti podatke.

Buckling behavior of cold-formed studs with thermal perforations

Opis: Studies have shown that the optimal structural scheme for low-rise buildings that meets all regulatory requirements is a frame system. In this connection, thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) profiles seem to be the best material for constructing light steel framed (LSF) walls. The framework of LSF walls is usually constructed from CFS C-shaped profiles. To increase the thermal effectiveness of a wall, CFS profiles usually have thermal perforations and thus are called thermoprofiles. However, these openings have a negative impact on bearing capacity of profiles and require accurate evaluation. In this article a relatively new reticular-stretched thermoprofile with diamond-shaped openings is considered. The article deals with the buckling analysis of perforated CFS C-sections subjected to compression.

Vertical displacements measuring methods during bridge load tests

Opis: This article introduces the use of the GNSS method for the load testings of bridge structures. We know that there area lot of methods by which you can determine vertical displacement. However, as new bridge constructions are constructed over almost impossible and inaccessible gorges and valleys, the classic measurements method do not allow us to determine vertical displacement so reliably any more or they are very time-consuming. The GNSS method is well known but there are difficulties when determining the altitude component of this method, which is rather questionable. For this purpose, the methods were tested as practical examples in which some difficulties were encountered, so subsequently another test recording was performed of altitude changes using this method.
