Mott-Peierls phase in deuterated copper-DCNQI systems: a comprehensive study of longitudinal and transverse conductivity and ageing effects

Opis: Transport and low-frequency optical reflection measurements (180-380 GHz) are reported for the quasi-three-dimensional conducting alloy ▫$Cu[(2,5(CH_3)_2-DCNQI)_{0.70}(2,5(CD_3)_2-DCNQI)_{0.30}]_2$▫ between room temperature and 35 K. The optical properties of the system are strongly anisotropic. It is metallic down to 60 K where a Mott-Peierls phase transition occurs. While the transverse conductivity remains practically unchanged, the longitudinal conductivity abruptly drops at the phase transition. Comparing our latest results with previous dc data and measurements of the microwave conductivity also reported here, we find indications of an ageing effect in these samples.

Undrained shear strength in dependence on the quantity of free water and firmly adsorbed water in fully saturated clays

Opis: The article describes the dependence between the undrained shear strength of fully saturated cohesive soils, the quantity of intergrain water and mineralogical properties of soils on the basis of theoretical analysis and practical tests on monomineral clay samples, it was determined that the total quantity of intergrain water is composed of free pore water and the firmly adsorbed water on the external surface of clay grains. The undrained shear strength of saturated soils is precisely dependent on the quantity of free water. The amount of free water and likewise the thickness of the water film around the clay grains are the same for different soils at the same undrained shear strength. The total quantity of firmly adsorbed water and the total quantity of integration water depends on the specific surface of soils.

Wave motion in infinite inhomogeneous waveguides

Opis: The analysis of wave motion in infinite homogeneous waveguides, having a complicated cross-section and/or an irregular inclusion, is a rather difficult task for the majority of available methods, especially when striving for accurate results. In contrast, this presented procedure performed in the frequency domain, is simple to apply. It yields correct results because the radiation conditions are considerably accurately satisfied, and it offers a clear parametric insight into wave motion. This procedure uses the FE modelling of an analysed section of the waveguide. It is based on the decomposition of wave motion, distinguishing propagating and non-propagating wavemodes by solving the eigenvalue problem. The presented examples demonstrate the effectiveness of this procedure, whilst a comparison between computed and analytical results demonstrates its accuracy.

Slovenian water management and EU - challenge and opportunity

Opis: The pollution of rivers, endangered underground water and water springs, hazardous substances in the soil, uncontrolled disposal of large quantities of waste - these and many other problems severely reduce the quality of life and hinder the country's overall development. The majority of surface water courses are excessively polluted (29% fall into the third and fourth water quality class). The pollution is spreading towards river sources. The quality of groundwater has been deteriorating recently. It is evident from the "Strategy for Economic Development" of Slovenia that the approximation to the European Union is the right choice for Slovenia.

Reinforcing methods for composite timber frame-fiberboard wall panels

Opis: This paper presents different possibilities on how to reinforce timber frame wall panels, which are mainly used as load-carrying capacity elements in the construction of prefabricated timber structures. These walls can be treated as composite elements composed of a timber frame and fiber-plaster boards. As the boards are the weaker part of the system they need to be somehow reinforced in order to assure the resistance and ductility of the elements especially in multi-level buildings located in seismic or windy areas. The aim of this research is to determine the differences in resistance and ductility between elements, reinforced using two different methods. Whilst the first, using additional fiberboards, does not improve the resistance and especially the ductility in the contended sense, it is more convenient for finding a solution when inserting diagonal steel strips, which are fixed to the timber frame.

New linear spring stiffness definition for displacement analysis of cracked beam elements

Opis: The paper describes the reasons for the derivation of a new definition of a rotational spring that can be utilised in the simplified computational model for the computation of transverse displacements of cracked beam structures dueto transverse load. This definition plays an extremely important role in the inverse identification of cracks.

Another step towards a virtual university in construction IT

Opis: Nine universities started a project in autumn 2001 with the aim to develop an interuniversity postgraduate program in Construction Information Technology. The program is intended to be offered to students on most of the partner universities. On some of them it should start already in the academic year 2003/2004. The students will attend the subjects in different ways: face-to-face at home universities, face-to-face at partner universities, as well as by means of open and distant learning. The program has been developed with the purpose that students will not only get the best subjects the partneruniversities can offer in this specific area, but will also get the very important experience of other universities, countries and cultures, as well as of using IT in the learning and working process. Some partner universities, like University of Salford, already offer programmes in open distant learning mode. To extend the experiences and to try more, mostly videoconferencing technologies, TU Dresden and University of Maribor joint twoclasses of students in the early 2003 and run a 30 hour seminar on "Mobile Computing in Construction." Valuable observations have been taken, which were then used to conceptualize an ideal distant learning environment. The paper describes the background, the teaching experiment itself, the observations made, and the specification of an integral distant learning environment, as a framework of a future Virtual University in Construction IT.

Effective control of unanticipated on-site events : a pragmatic, human-oriented problem solving approach

Opis: Unanticipated events on building sites are inevitable. The frequency of unanticipated events is usually high due to the inherent complexity and dynamics of construction projects. A proper mobile interactive personal network can make use of the rich knowledge and experience of site staff, to handle and effectively resolve on-site problems caused by unanticipated events. Immediate on-site problem solving significantly impacts subsequent project characteristics and leads to a more productive organizational processes as a whole. This paper focuses on the importance of interactive personal communication as a basis for immediate on-site problem solving. For communications support, a human-oriented pragmatic solution in the form of a mobile, interactive, context-sensitive personal network is presented.
