Some theoretical concepts for more innovative sustainable development
Zdenka Ženko, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: This chapter explores key theoretical and practical foundations necessary for understanding and implementing innovative processes with more sustainable human activities. Building on the systems thinking, ethical frameworks, and Brundtland Report, the chapter examines how subjective viewpoints (emotions, values, talents, knowledge of why and knowledge of how) shape innovative processes for more sustainable behavior. Case studies in forestry and organic farming illustrate how sustainability can achieve both ecological and economic benefits. Contemporary research on ethics, environmental, social and governmental initiatives, integration, and sustainability reporting further supports the relevance of more requisitely holistic and long-term perspectives. The chapter concludes with recommendations for education, policy, and future research to strengthen systemic and ethical approaches to sustainability in innovative processes.

Economic development and planetary boundaries : application of binary dependent variable models
Darja Boršič, Lea Žižek, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The aim of this paper is to estimate the determinants of economic development measured by Human Development Index (HDI) and planetary boundaries measured by Planetary Pressures-adjusted Human Development Index (PHDI). The empirical analysis was conducted in two parts. First, the whole set of 106 countries worldwide with available data was included in estimating determinants of economic development regardless of economic development rank. The ordinary least squares models confirmed the hypothesis that the HDI determinants focus on education and material standard factors, while PHDI determinants consist also of more environmental factors. Second, only very high and high developed countries were included in estimating the logit models. The binary dependent variables approach could not confirm that the PHDI is more environmentally focused since it turned out that also HDI determinants include environmental factors that influence the probability of a country to increase the HDI rank and the estimated signs of some of the estimated coefficients for environmental variables in case of PHDI do not meet the expectations.

Access to health care in the United States
Dejan Romih, Peter Kumer, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Access to health care remains one of the most debated issues in health economics. However, in most cases, access to health care is neither equal, equitable nor fair, as it depends on income or wealth. The aim of this study is to group US states and the US capital city into clusters based on similarities in five measures of access to health care: percentage of adults who were uninsured, percentage of adults unable to obtain medical care when needed due to cost, percentage of adults who had difficulty paying medical bills in the past year, percentage of adults without a personal doctor, and percentage of adults with fair or poor health status. The results of the cluster analysis showed two clusters: states with poorer access and states with better access to health care. This indicates differences in access to health care between the two groups, which may affect health outcomes. Therefore, action is needed to ensure equal, equitable and fair access to health care for all.

Development of the regulatory framework for sustainability assurance : a comparative analysis of the transition from NFRD to CSRD in Slovenia and Montenegro
Tanja Lakovic, Daniel Zdolšek, Milica Vukčević, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: This paper compares Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) implementation in Slovenia and Montenegro, building on their 2017 Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) transposition. It also examines their responses to CSRD’s expanded assurance requirements. Methodology/research approach: A qualitative descriptive approach will analyze relevant pronouncements (i.e., directives, laws, and proposed laws) using comparison and synthesis to assess harmonization with the CSRD directive, with special attention given to assurance requirements in sustainability reporting. Findings: Slovenia has fully transposed the CSRD, while Montenegro is still at the draft law stage, revealing regulatory gaps linked to its EU integration status. Research limitations/implications: The research excludes empirical data and stake-holder opinions but contributes to the emerging literature on Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries. Practical implications: This study highlights regulatory gaps in Montenegroʼs proposed Law of Accounting, guiding future alignment with the CSRD on sustainability assurance. Originality/value: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the transposition of the CSRD in the context of both an EU Member State and a candidate country. It bridges a literature gap and offers valuable insights into the normative differences and implementation challenges between Slovenia and Montenegro.

Long-term effect of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) corporate practices on corporate stock performance
Svetlin Minev, Petya Dankova, Tjaša Štrukelj, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the context of the growing prominence of socially responsible investment, the debate over whether sustainable corporate practices translate into sustained shareholder value has intensified. As a key tool for aligning their investment portfolios with responsible/sustainable corporate practices, investors rely on listed companies’ Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ratings. This study aims to investigate the long-term impact of ESG practices on the stock performance of listed companies. We perform a Q1 2000–Q1 2025 backtest to analyse the comparative performance of a Best-in-Class ESG portfolio, constructed by the top 30 listed companies with market capitalisations above USD 2 billion ranked by Morningstar Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings as of 31 March 2025 against the S&P 500 Total Return index. We found that ESG leaders exhibited superior risk-adjusted performance, outperforming the S&P 500 Total Return Index. The BiC portfolios achieved a substantially higher CAGR and Sharpe ratio, while maintaining maximum drawdowns that remained comparable to the benchmark S&P 500 Total Return index. We also found that ESG advantages were more pronounced in market downturns, with the Best-in-Class ESG portfolio showing better CAGR and Sortino ratios. The findings of this study demonstrate that responsible governance and management create benefits for all stakeholders, including investors, society and nature, in the broadest sense of these terms.

Digital disruption and author strategy : a qualitative study of self-publishing in the US science fiction and fantasy market as a source of intangible assets
Vito Bobek, Jacob Elliot, Tatjana Horvat, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper examines how self-published authors in the U.S. science fiction and fantasy (SFF) market strategically respond to digital disruption in the publishing industry. Drawing on fifteen expert interviews analyzed through Mayring’s qualitative content analysis, the study integrates four theoretical perspectives: disruptive innovation, diffusion of innovations, the resource-based view, and actor-network theory. The results show that independent authors act as entrepreneurial micro-firms, leveraging intangible assets such as brand identity, digital marketing skills, and reader communities to navigate platform-based markets. Authors adopt funnel marketing, hybrid publishing, and platform-specific strategies to enhance visibility and monetise creative output. The sample is limited to one genre and national context, and findings are therefore exploratory. The study advances our understanding of cultural entrepreneurship and platform economies by demonstrating how digitalisation reconfigures authorial agency within sociotechnical networks of platforms, algorithms, and digital tools.

Beyond differences : a generational convergence in technology use among business students
Vesna Čančer, Maja Rožman, Polona Tominc, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The rapid digitalization of higher education has transformed how students learn, collaborate, and engage with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). While earlier research emphasized generational or academic-level differences in digital behavior, recent evidence suggests convergence in technology use. This study explores whether undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Maribor, display distinct technology engagement patterns across five constructs: excessive technology use, online collaboration, the use of digital learning tools (E-boards), the use of AI in education, and perceived academic success. A survey among 285 students was analyzed using the non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test due to a non-normal data distribution. The findings showed that postgraduate students did not report higher levels of E-Board use, online collaboration, or perceived academic success. Undergraduate students scored higher on one item related to excessive technology use, but not across the full construct. However, significant differences emerged in AI use, where postgraduate students showed greater confidence and willingness to integrate AI tools. The findings suggest that digital competence and the quality of technology integration, rather than study level, shape students’ learning experiences. Higher education institutions should promote balanced and ethical technology use, strengthen AI literacy, and foster self-regulated learning skills.

Collaborative leadership for quality assurance : a case study on developing a strategic quality manual in higher education
Karin Širec, Maja Rožman, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Higher education institutions face growing pressure to demonstrate excellence and strategic alignment in quality assurance, particularly to meet international accreditation standards. This paper presents a case study of a business faculty that undertook a leadership-driven initiative to develop a comprehensive Quality Manual aimed at continuous improvement and accreditation readiness. The project was structured as a multi-phase, collaborative effort involving broad stakeholder engagement, benchmarking of best practices, and alignment with international accreditation frameworks and the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG), as well as relevant national quality assurance requirements. The resulting Quality Manual provides a unified framework for quality assurance (QA) across all key areas—governance, academic programmes, research, student support, partnerships—linking institutional strategy to daily processes. Key outcomes of the case include clarified roles and procedures, integrated feedback loops, and enhanced readiness for accreditation. The development process highlighted the critical role of educational leadership in fostering a quality culture; by engaging faculty, staff, students, and external partners, the leadership built shared ownership of QA goals. The study is guided by two research questions: (1) How can collaborative and distributed leadership support the development of a strategically aligned Quality Manual at the faculty level? (2) How does the process of designing and implementing a Quality Manual contribute to strengthening internal QA and fostering a quality culture? The study discusses challenges and lessons learned in leading such change, emphasising the importance of stakeholder collaboration, strategic alignment, and change management. The findings contribute theoretically by illustrating how faculty-level leadership operationalizes QA frameworks into concrete institutional tools, and practically by offering a structured model for developing a strategic Quality Manual in higher education.

Merjenje ekonomske negotovosti s pomočjo umetne inteligence
