Codes of ethics and codes of conduct for using ICT in education

Opis: Codes of conduct (and ethical codes) are a way of ensuring that positive impact in the community prevails. Higher education environments that have standardized ICT management show higher quality of performance if compared to those who have not. Also characteristic for these environments is their strong willingness for change. A university is a place of scientific communication and, thus, ICT and especially the Internet represent access to a new development phase to which the best universities are strongly dedicated. In this way, also ethics returns to the core of the mission undertaken by higher education institutions. Many countries around the world are adopting National Educational Technology Standards (NETS), which have been developed and are continuously updated within the ISTE Association and at the same time represent a code of conduct for students, teachers, administrators and all others involved in high-quality study. These standards must be supported with code of ethics, because they depend on considerations of important moral values.

Clustered approach to ICT services utilization analysis

It allows extracting coherent groups of countries with nearly the same level of ICT services utilization based on the number of indicators analyzed. Competency based training need assessment

Opis: Training is a usual formula for organisations through which employees are introduced to learning, but the challenge lies in identifying the appropriate training needs of employees. The success of a training program depends primarily on the need assessment. The paper discusses the process of competency mapping and focuses on how competency mapping can be used for conducting training need assessment. The paper is an empirical research based on both public and private manufacturing units in India. Primary and secondary data was collected using number of techniques. Gap analysis has been performed for employees and it has also been aimed to verify the changes in competency gaps on applying need based training. On providing need based training, significant difference was measured in the level of competencies of employees. The paper shares a practical insight on the implementation of competency mapping for training need analysis. The research is focused on manufacturing units only, whereas there is a huge scope for it to be implemented in service industries also. The paper is an original piece of research where a model has been designed to resolve training issues of manufacturing industries.

Characters of innovation management in the primary health care centers

Opis: Innovation management in the primary health care centers is one of the important debates among the governments and academic forums. Although the number of studies in the field of innovation in health care sectors has increased over the last 10 years, little is known about the conditions for the successful implementation of innovations in the health care centers. In this paper, we review and assess the situation of Finnish health care centers from innovation management viewpoint. We try to answer one of the important questions designed by policy makers: “How can Finnish health care centers move toward systems that continuously improve their innovation and creativity?” The presented framework describes the main characters and dimensions of diffusion of ideation and innovation in the health care centers.

Career planning as a building block of personal excellence

Opis: The narrow field of research here is the development of a model for the building of personal excellence using a career plan that is empirically tested and confirmed, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The purpose of this study relates to the writing of a career plan, for the determination of the factors that influence the feeling of personal excellence of participants in career planning education, in relation to other participants who are not. The qualitative analysis consists of basic experience data that was collected during the education process, through 20 essays, and the paradigmatic model, with the final theory defined, and based on this, a questionnaire was created. The quantitative analysis involved a total of 547 participants. For the statistical analyses of the data, bivariate analysis was used to assess the linear connection of individual pairs of variables. The search for differences between the two groups used t-tests for independent samples. Factor analysis was used to determine whether the relations among the examined variables can be explained with a smaller number of indirectly examined variables. The final model consists of three elements: (1) relation with career; (2) self-esteem; and (3) perception of personal excellence. Management can use the results of this study for management decisions. The increased success of every individual organisation benefits the whole of society. This study represents an original contribution and offers a new approach that is based on the paradigm of the understanding of a career and the importance of its planning as a motive for excellence.

Baselines for the preparation of electronic textbooks

Opis: The NAUK group (Advanced Learning Blocks group; http://www.nauk.si) is engaged in the development of theoretical and practical concepts of ICT use in all levels of education. Recently, the proposed introduction of electronic textbooks (e-textbooks) has become a major topic nationwide in Slovenia. There are multiple dilemmas to be solved, e.g. what a modern e-textbook is, what it should include, in what way should it differ from conventional textbooks, what tools and technologies should be used for its creation, etc. This paper attempts to make recommendations, which we believe should be followed by all the authors of e-textbooks.

Barriers and benefits of investments into enterprise content management systems

Author focuses on Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system and identifies three periods of its evolution. During this time ECM evolved to be high-quality and widely available technology, but many organisations have still not implemented ECM systems. The paper contains findings of a survey about the barriers and benefits of adoption of ECM systems, conducted in February 2010 in various organisations in Czech Republic.

Authentic leadership in contemporary Slovenian business environment

Opis: The paper explores the authentic leadership in learning organization in Slovenian business environment. The purpose of the paper is to present relationship between authentic leadership and learning organization. Main research thesis is focused on characteristics of authentic leadership in company HERMES SoftLab. The main thesis of this paper is that authentic leadership in learning organization enables the growth of leaders in organizational surroundings through a constant dedication to authenticity and organizational learning that will be explored through the qualitative research method of case study research approach. Key research finding is that authentic leaders can be identified in company HERMES SoftLab and that there is a mutual influence between learning organization and authentic leadership. Therefore, the main research finding is that the learning organization leverages the authentic leadership, which in turn leverages the learning organization.

Attitudes of social gerontology and physiotherapy students towards the elderly

Opis: Background/Goal: Attitudes towards older persons are particularly important for healthcare students and practitioners. The aim of our work is to analyse the attitudes of social gerontology and physiotherapy students towards elderly persons. Method: A structured questionnaire using the Kogan Attitudes towards Older People scale (KAOP) was used to collect data. Statistical methods were applied to evaluate the data: reliability test, t-test for independent samples and bivariate correlational analysis. Results: Social gerontology and physiotherapy students accept the elderly with awareness and respect. Few age-related prejudices and stereotypes were found among them, and they do not problematise the elderly. Social gerontology students have more positive attitudes towards the elderly than physiotherapy students do. Male students and students who live in the same household with elderly persons are more appreciative towards them, but they have more prejudices; the same applies to a lesser extent to students who do not live in the same household with an elderly person. Conclusion: Although minor deviations from a positive attitude were found, probably resulting from different experiences with elderly people, the results of this study raise hopes that respectful relations and cooperation across age groups will continue.

Are cooperative banks better equipped to weather financial crisis than their commercial counterparts?

Opis: Background and Purpose: The aim of this paper is to empirically investigate the performance of different types of Italian banks before and during the recent credit crisis with an emphasis on the behaviour of cooperative banks. It is well established in theory that cooperative banks follow more conservative business strategies and care more for stakeholders in comparison to commercial banks. On this background, the paper tries to show the empirical effects of those characteristics on the cooperative bank’s performance during financial distress compared to commercial banks. In fact, the paper can prove that Italian cooperative banks were less exposed to the shocks of the crisis and showed a better performance. Methodology: In order to assess whether cooperative banks performed differently at all from commercial banks during the 2005-2012 period, return on average assets (ROAA), cost efficiency and loan quality have been investigated by means of a sample of 594 Italian banks, pooled OLS and (when possible) a fixed effects estimator. Results: Overall, Italian cooperative banks performed better than other Italian banks during the financial crisis. The quality of loans deteriorated less in these banks than in others, while no significant differences have been observed in terms of ROAA and cost efficiency between these and other banks. Conclusion: My paper provides empirical evidence for a well established theoretically derived hypothesis: Italian cooperative banks operate differently than standard commercial banks which is especially noticeable during times of crisis. The fact empirically demonstrated that different banking models have shown different reactions to the financial crisis and economic downturn has important policy implications. Due to both characteristics of cooperative banks and severe limitations in the financial policies by the Italian government during the credit crisis an ironical pattern has emerged: While Italian cooperative banks were less exposed to the shocks of the crisis, they would have been less able to adjust to them since the financial rescue program was designed primarily for commercial banks.
