Student self-evaluation of seminar activities

Opis: This study is focused on the curricular innovations of methodological subjects for acquiring of teachers competences at undergraduate education where students as prospective chemistry teachers serve as a goal group. The redesign of seminar as an essential curricular form is based on consistent consideration of topical didactic principles. Research into the optimal performance of seminar work focuses particularly on their organisation, methodology and evaluation. These three model parameters serve to implement student seminar activities in accordance with Bologna teachers competences. Using the descriptive empirical method for students self-evaluation of seminar work defined in methodological subject module of three subjects (Didactics of Chemistry, Experiments and Natural Activities-Mentroship) some efforts in bettering the competence mastery over.

Student self-evaluation of co-lecture activities

Opis: This article argues a greater stress to student-centered, active-learning approaches in teacher education beginning already in lectures by the subjects of DCEM methodological module. Our approach in increasing lecture's activity of students is involving them as teacher's co-lecturers. In order to monitor the efficiency and quality improvement of their outcomes-teacher's activities, we make use of the students' co-lecturers, as well as students-listeners feedback, which continuously takes place at the end of a program of specific curricular units. Students self-reflections are confronted with teacher's trainer noticings. Some significant findings are interpreted in compliance with teacher competences. CO-lecture's activities are valued regarding to optional AADIDG didactic principles.

Strategy of cross curricular connection at technology education as a factor of modern school

Opis: This contribution deals with the topic of inter-subject planning and connecting in technique and technology and as a factor of modern school by emphasizing the strategies of training-educational work in technique and technology. In this context the most suitable project task is being regarded as that strategy of training-educational work, in which the development of divergent thinking, creative compatibilities, acquiring, deepening, practicing and using the knowledge in the field of technique, technology, work organization, economics, ergonomics, ecology, informatics and computer science, industrial design, etc. is concerned. In such a constructed strategy the inter-subject planning and connecting can be represented and the tendency to acquire better knowledge can also be realized, because of the opinion of the constructivists who think that knowledge in its final form can neither be "given " to somebody else, nor it can be "accepted" by somebody else, but it should be rebuilt by everybody with his/her own mental activity and exactly in technique and technology the objective and subjective conditions for such a style and didactic system of training - educational work are being created.

Spatial ability, 3D modelling and styles of thinking in relation to brain hemisphere dominance

Opis: The progress of neuroscience and the understanding of children's styles of thinking are opening up new teaching styles that take into account differences in individual cognitive perception. Students can be classified into three distinctive perceptive types, according to the pronounced activity of one cerebral hemisphere in their thinking and information processing: left-hemisphere, right-hemisphere, and integrative type that does not exhibit a considerable dominance of one particular hemisphere. The purpose of the research was to establish differences in the 3D modeling encouraged progression of spatial ability between the left-hemisphere, right-hemisphere and integrative types of students. Computerized 3D modeling employed during technical extra-curricular activity in lower secondary school (grades 6 to 9) may affect the spatial ability of students, which according to other studies, appears to be predominantly connected with the right brain hemisphere. Research was conducted among a variety of lower secondary school students across Slovenia aged 11 15 years. Data on spatial ability and its development was collected using a hybrid spatial intelligence test conducted on two separate occasions, while assessment of the learning perception type of students depending on hemispheric dominance was obtained using a self-evaluation questionnaire. The 3D modeling of technical objects and objects drawn in orthographic or isometric projection was done with the software Trimble SketchUp.

Secondary school students' perspectives on and attitudes towards laboratory work in biology

Opis: Interest in Biology among secondary school students in Slovenia is dropping from year to year. 1,046 secondary school students were surveyed about their preferred number of group mates in the laboratory, their attitudes towards and positive and negative views of laboratory work in Biology. From the students' perspective, the preferred way of teaching biology would be a mixture of interesting lectures and laboratory activities where they would have the opportunity to find solutions to the problems on their own through work in small groups. This is in direct opposition to prevailing teaching practice, where lectures are the dominant way of teaching. To overcome the loss of interest in Biology among students, action is needed immediately. Bridging the gap between students' perspectives on and opinions-about good teaching practice and actual teaching practice should follow three tracks: the first one involves changes to the syllabus in such a way that less is more; the second one requires rewriting of manuals and textbooks, and the third is a change in the teaching practice of individual teachers. If for the first two teachers can find the excuse that this is outside their sphere of competence, there can be no excuse for avoiding immediate changes in teaching techniques.

Problems environmental education connected with technic and technology

Opis: By planning and selecting the contents of subject technology we must take into account also the contents from environmental education. Combining the different contents are compose from the process of planning, analyzing and/or evaluating achieved result. In the frame of the selected educational strategy (for example Project task) the students must acquire and strengthen the theoretical and practical knowledge, develop skills and working habits. Only if we take into account this, they will be able to transfer this theoretical and practical technological knowledge to solve the ecological problems. This is the teaching and learning in the narrow sense, which we can classified as acquiring new, knowledge, tasks and skills necessary for solving the problems. Learning in the wide sense means preserving knowledge and recalling it back, the knowledge that is connected with technical, technological, organizational and ecological problems.

Philosophy of mind and cognitive modelling in education

Opis: One of the main reasons there is so much junk in education is that there are so few people who know enough about education and about the sciences that support education, i.e. philosophy, cognitive and neuroscience to put the thing together. Educators have been reliant upon others’ expertise for the interpretations from contemporary science hence have not been able to discern whether the claims made are valid or invalid representations of the research. Without a direct access to the primary research educators may be at risk of misusing results from this advanced research. The need for so called ‘mediator’ in the translation of research to practice has led to a situation where the application of cognitive neuroscience research findings is running ahead of the research itself. The overall objective is to produce an integrated approach to problems of connection Education with the contemporary knowledge from the area of Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, Cognitive modelling and Artificial Intelligence.

Perspectives on the introduction of computer-supported real laboratory exercises into biology teaching in secondary schools

Opis: Computer supported virtual and real laboratories are recognized as tools that can help in raising the quality of biology instruction, and raising development competences in students. Yet biology teachers have been treating the computer as typewriter, as a source of information and as a tool for communication, all of which usages are common to all subjects. The uses of ICT that can significantly help in developing scientific literacy and that are primary tools in science teaching - such as the use of data loggers - are only rarely on the syllabus. The lack of equipment is not the most important reason for failure to use such applications; instead, this is probably due to teachers' attitudes, opinions and knowledge. Students cannot be recognized as an obstacle in working with ICT. Lawer secondary school students aged between 10 and 14 performed three laboratory exercises (Activity of yeast, Gas exchange in breathing, Heart rate) using three different methods: classic, computer-supported and virtual laboratory. As a result of testing, we know that all three methods are suitable even for younger students. When students were asked which method they liked the most, their first choice was computer-supported laboratory, followed by classic laboratory, with virtual laboratory in the third place.

Pedagogy 1:1 in higher education

Opis: The use of ICT in education has changed substantially over the last two decades. The development of new technologies has enabled us, the users, to mature and gain experience. The introduction of ICT in the educational process at the same time means a change of the teachers' role. The teacher appears in the role of a mentor who directs the activities of the learner. There has been a change in the teacher preparation to teach. He should provide both the content as well as technical support and to create a suitable learning environment. The way of teaching in the natural science and engineering education is specific due to the need of transfer knowledge into the practice. The nature of work in this kind of education requires more experimental work, based on individual learning process. There are many different implementation options of laboratory exercises that advantageously incorporate ICT into the nature of their work. The most popular in engineering education are two different types of laboratories: Simulation (virtual) and Remote controlled (online) labs, defined by Balamuralithara and Woods (2009). A remote controlled laboratory for conducting remote experiments at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was developed. Development of the remote lab was carried out as an exploratory work of the group of students and professors. The lab was developed in the following three phases: development of the construction with corresponding technical documentation, development of the control system and development of the system for remote control of a lift. The successful student project is evident through the applicability of the developed laboratory that serves as a great tool for studying and offers all the benefits of ICT.

Patterns in symmetry breaking transitions

Opis: It is now well accepted that we all have amazing capabilities in recognizing faces in a fraction of a second. This specific pattern recognition ability could be by appropriate training transferred to some other field of expertise. At the same time pattern recognition skills are becoming increasingly important survival strategy in the modern competitive world which faces information overload. In the paper we demonstrate an example of pattern-recognition type of lecturing modern physics. By using already absorbed knowledge and analogies we exploit our innate pattern recognition brain capabilities for more effective learning of new concepts in physics.
