Patterns in symmetry breaking transitions

Opis: It is now well accepted that we all have amazing capabilities in recognizing faces in a fraction of a second. This specific pattern recognition ability could be by appropriate training transferred to some other field of expertise. At the same time pattern recognition skills are becoming increasingly important survival strategy in the modern competitive world which faces information overload. In the paper we demonstrate an example of pattern-recognition type of lecturing modern physics. By using already absorbed knowledge and analogies we exploit our innate pattern recognition brain capabilities for more effective learning of new concepts in physics.

Modular and branched structure of individualized intelligent e-learning materials for science and technology subject course

Opis: E-learning and online education offers important opportunities for educators as well as for students. Traditional e-materials, as they are known today, do not allow the recognition of different parameters, such as: learning differences, prior knowledge, learning capabilities, learning environment, styles of learning, etc. Because e-materials are structured in such a way they cannot be successfully adapted for learners who consequently cannot control their own learning (Berge, 2002; Picciano, 2000; Saba, 2002). Such a result offers, among others, a highly anti-motivational effect. The preparation of modern e-materials therefore requires a thorough preparation in terms of content and design, which has to be (mostly) based on pedagogical and didactic theories. Modern e-materials, which can also be named educational e-materials, are usually accessible online (internet-based training (IBT), web-based training (WBT), online education, etc.), they enable and encourage self-learning, they are flexible, dynamic, interactive, use different types of media, individualized and adapted to the users needs. Mostly the latter characteristic will receive special attention in the following research.

Modernizing mathematics education in Slovenia

Opis: Nowadays, we are facing a large number of varied educational projects which aim to direct and modernize mathematics education. Many institutions (from university bodies and institutes to individual secondary and elementary schools, networks of schools and private enterprises) make an appearance on the project market and contribute their ideas. Such quantity can cause confusion among teachers. Encouraged by the article, a mathematician's lament, by Paul Lockhard, we present some simple principles for classroom work that, in our opinion, would enhance the efficiency of mathematics classes in the long term. Thus we try to help mathematics teachers build a strategy for a fruitful approach to the ideas, recommendations and advertisements on the educational market. Showing the respect towards the quality mathematics teachers and avoiding discouraging and confusing them are some of the leading ideas that we should pursue in our attempt to improve mathematics education. At the end, we also offer some recommendations about the teacher training system.

Model of ICT implementation in the technical education

Opis: The operation of a modern university and its competitiveness on the knowledge market are becoming increasingly dependent on the implementation and use of information and communication technology (ICT) in its educational processes. The University of Maribor is entering the process of changes bringing new dimensions to teaching and learning. The present article presents a research that included students/student teachers of technical education at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Maribor and the Faculty of Education of the University of Ljubljana and design and technology teachers. This research was conducted with the aim to study four fundamental issues important for the implementation of ICT in the educational process on the entire vertical of technical education. These are the available computer equipment, beliefs of students/student teachers of technical education and design and technology teachers about the circumstances regarding the use of the computer and individual forms of e-learning in the educational process, their experiences with using the computer in the educational process and their opinion about the applicability of portals as social environments. One of our main findings was that the view points of both students/student teachers of technical education and design and technology teachers regarding the use of the computer in class were positive. Both confirmed that in technical education different forms of e-learning were appropriate. A high percentage of teachers who regularly use educational portals indicate a great interest for the online social environment. The final finding that students/student teachers of technical education and design and technology teachers support the use of the computer for educational purposes importantly influenced further activities related to the implementation of e-learning into the study process and the preparation of an educational portal.

Language-independent virtual biology exercise for the development of key competences for lifelong learning

Opis: Natural sciences in Slovenia are not as popular as we would like them to be. Biology teaching and learning in great part consist of memorizing the facts and not so much of developing competences. Laboratory and field work are recognized as methods where students can achieve subject specific and generic competences, as recommended by different international organizations. Such key competences are mathematical competence and competences in science and technology, and digital competences. Although competences cannot be learned but have to be achieved, the task seems epical when students can hardly find computer supported didactical tools in their own language. On the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics virtual biology exercise Mendelian Genetics with a translational tool was developed. Teachers have the possibility to translate it into desired foreign language. Virtual exercise is interactive and encourages the critical thinking approach to reach the high level cognitive skills and development of different competences.

Interplay between art and science in education

Opis: Music can be viewed as a structure formed by notes. Different structures in music have potential to yield enormously rich diversity of different melodies. Music is a typical example where a structure defines a property. Similar concepts could be also exploited in education, in presented case in nano-sciences, which are typical representatives of soft materials the structure of which can be strongly manipulated with local geometry and presence of appropriate nanoparticles. The objects of study, named also LC shells, will be exploited as basic unit elements for future soft colloidal crystals. A different arrangement of colloids within the crystal would result in different physical properties in a similar way as different packing of atoms results in different crystals made of real atoms. In presented research will be demonstrated, how relevant basic mechanisms in thin films of nematic liquid crystals could be explained in a classroom and used as a case study, also for explanation of many other physical properties. This research topic is still in its infancy. At this stage only various defect structures in relatively simple geometries (spherical and elliptical) will be analyzed. There is a need to find simple ways to control sensitively the valence of LC shells and in particular to develop strategies to assemble them in crystal structures of desired symmetry. This would allow tailoring specific optical dispersion relations or other physical property of interest and make new ways to teach different physical properties on the "music" based approach.

Interactive e-learning materials in the mathematics classroom in Slovenia

Opis: This article presents the current development of e-learning in Slovenia, with an emphasis on the domestic E-um web portal (URL: www.e-um.si) for teaching mathematics in primary and secondary schools. Based on findings from recent scientific research, the strengths and weaknesses of e-learning materials in education, particularly in mathematics classes, are analyzed. We are particularly interested in the advantages and disadvantages of interactive e-learning materials in comparison to traditional learning materials as well as in the quality of the E-um web portal in comparison to similar educational web portals at home and abroad. Theoretical findings are tightly interwoven with examples of teaching practice using the E-um interactive materials.

Integration of design, modeling and visualization in slovenian primary education

Opis: A human being perceives the world spatially, he detects and properly processes distances, size of objects, their shapes and all that is linked to our perceptions of the world. Humans' sensors provide the information about the world around and brain translates this information into thoughts, into ideas. The whole process is completely natural. In the past, due to technological limitations, the human attempted to generalize these ideas and convert them into a form so that he could "record" it on a flat medium, like on paper for example, and because of that he consequently had to develop the ability to "read these records. The term spatial perception was introduced and after that it was established that not everyone has it. To possess spatial perception an abstract way of thinking and higher cognitive abilities are needed. This paper presents an integration of design, three dimensional (3D) modeling and visualization program SketchUp in Design and technology curriculum into Slovenian primary schools. Emphasis is given to the analysis of the past and current condition and situation and on the incorporation of the program into the primary school curriculum. With the strategy assigned in such a way, the abilities that are connected with technological activities are strengthened, spatial intelligence is developed and assimilated. With such an approach two of the key European competences: 1. Mathematical competence and 2. Basic competences in science and technology and digital literacy, are acquired and reinforced.

Information communication technology and e-learning contra teacher

Opis: This article presents the results of a pilot research about interaction between e-learning/teaching paradigms and "classical" ones, where a "human" teacher is the central element. With other words, we analyzed relation between e-teacher and a human one. Because the presented results are gained in a pilot research and so the sample was relatively small, we would like to show how, with the help of statistical methods the reliability of the results can be increased. In our research work we developed different tools and with this pilot research we would like to test, if this tools: are precisely enough and specially if they give us enough reliable results. Results of our research in this paper will point out two important conclusions, namely: the students need (human) teacher and e-material (or e-teacher/tutor) is simply not enough, especially if we would like to reach higher cognitive, long lasting knowledge, and with appropriate selected statistical methods, also with small sample, we can obtain enough reliable results.

Improving quality of the educational process by raising teachers' communication skills

Opis: The quality of the educational process can be measured by different criteria. These criteria are based on factors, including good communication as an important aspect. Similarly to good communication being able to improve the quality of life, the quality of the educational process largely depends on the communication ability of teachers or implementers of education. In his or her job, the teacher has to master communication on different levels: with his or her superior (the principal), colleagues, parents and pupils (students). Not only does the teacher have to educate students by example, he/she occasionally also need to provide assistance in solving conflicts so as to avoid peer violence. During their studies at the university, student teachers should acquire good communication skills. Even though these have been introduced in the content of pedagogical study programmes, their extent is still not sufficient. This paper presents an example of trial Communication in Education laboratory work that was implemented with three generations of 4th year students future teachers of technical education. Their reaction was very positive and they expressed the desire for additional work to be prepared.
