The role of the European Academy of Teachers in General Practice and Family Medicine in family medicine education in Europe
Zalika Klemenc-Ketiš, Janko Kersnik, 2012, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Primary health care is important item of political agendas since Alma Ata conference in 1978. West Balkans share common history in development of primary care since 1920' when Andrija Stampar introduced social and community based primary care concepts. The first known specialist training in general practice in the world started in former Yugoslavia in the early 1960'. Since then, much has been done in the field of general practice and family medicine and this is reflected in The European Academy of Teachers in General Practice and Family Medicine (EURACT), which is a network organisation within World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians Region Europe (WONCA Europe). Its aim is to foster and maintain high standards of care in European general practice by promoting general practice as a discipline by learning and teaching. EURACT developed several documents and teachers' courses which can serve the development of family medicine curricula in new established departments of medical schools. This is also the case at Maribor Medical School, where learning outcomes and teaching methods are in concordance with EURACT teaching agenda, but also some innovative approaches are used, such as art and e-learning environment as teaching methods.

Importance of international networking in academic family medicine
Zalika Klemenc-Ketiš, Janko Kersnik, 2014, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: European family medicine/general practice (FM/GP) has travelled the long and successful journey of profiling the discipline and has produced valuable position papers on education and research. Nowadays, academic medicine is one of the pillars in the future development of FM/GP in Europe. A common European curriculum on undergraduate and postgraduate family medicine is needed. Also, a sound international platform of teaching institutions and/or teachers of family medicine would foster the further development of family medicine as an academic discipline. This would stimulate students and teachers to engage in international exchange to gain new knowledge and experiences, present their work and ideas abroad and prepare the conditions for further exchange of students and teachers. Conclusion: Established departments of FM/GP, led by a teacher who is a family physician/general practitioner, at each Medical School in Europe should provide students with knowledge and skills related to the core attributes of FM/GP. International exchanges of teachers and students should foster the development of a common curriculum on FM in Europe and foster improvement in the quality of FM education.

From virtual library over dictum and intel until refine
Vladimir Šimunović, Hans-Günther Sonntag, Richard Marz, Maja Ostojić, Axel Horsch, Bojana Filej, Danica Železnik, Ana Marušić, 2008, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: The purpose of this paper is to recall how we, medical teachers in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BH), coped with the challenge of reform in higher education and to analyze what in our doing was fashion, which trends we have chosen to follow, and what were the real, substantial and tangible results of our work. Financial support for reform across the board came through the Trans-European Program for Co-operation in Higher Education in Central and Eastern Europe (Tempus), and, since 1997, the five schools of medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina partnered with academic institutions from nine EU countries in seven granted Tempus projects. The results were tangible: a network of medical libraries was established; medical schools were assessed internally and externally; several important documents were drafted and agreed on; a core group of faculty from Bosnia and Herzegovina was trained in new teaching methods; and research was done and published. Not less important, there were also some less tangible, but perhaps even more important fruits of this cooperation. A sense of trust was established, which is essential for any future collaborative action. Representatives from all sides, previously divided by the war, had a chance to communicate with each other, dispelling some prejudices and regaining belief that it is possible to work together. This example of the schools of medicine of Bosnia and Herzegovina shows that higher education can be a favorable arena for reconciliation. Financial incentive can serve as a catalyst in the process and the presence of impartial partners (in our case, schools of medicine from the EU) proved beneficial for establishing and maintaining trust and good-will.The conclusion is that society rebuilding can be promoted indirectly, through formal education and professional engagement, not necessarily by pressing the “opposing” sides to talk about reconciliation and sign peace declarations.

Sinteza in karakterizacija Bi2MoO6 nanodelcev

Entrepreneurship as a solution to the unemployment problem
Miha Marič, Mitja Jeraj, Jasmina Žnidaršič, 2010, strokovni članek

Opis: The relation between entrepreneurship and unemployment has been an interesting topic for researchers for quite some time. In the time of global recession and mass layoffs different countries try to stimulate their residents to work on their ideas and to test themselves on the open market using various forms of subsidizing. It is important to point out that entrepreneurship does not constitute such a social security as employment in large companies. Entrepreneurship is not just a mixture of ideas, desires for success and a trend away from employment, integration with the right business partners and the issues of obtaining the initial capital, but largely also depends on the laws in each country and the infrastructure which this country offers. Countries with better entrepreneurial infrastructure (technology parks, university incubators, etc.) are definitely more open to competition and entrepreneurial activities than others. Globally interesting and internationally comparable study made each year by GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) (2008) notes that more and more people around the world are dealing with entrepreneurship. Schools for entrepreneurship are an important link between theoretical knowledge and practical involvement in the market. The international economic crisis has further accelerated the flow of restructuring, while unemployment continues to rise. It is therefore necessary to adopt measures that will help people with self-employment and, ultimately, in achieving a dignified life. Our contribution will be built on the hypothesis that where there is a higher rate of unemployment, more people will transit into entrepreneurship and where there is a higher rate of entrepreneurship there will be a lower level of unemployment. To test our hypothesis we will use available data from different countries and measure the correlations between the rate of entrepreneurship and the rate of unemployment and make a regression analysis of both values.

Authentic leadership to the future
Vlado Dimovski, Marko Ferjan, Miha Marič, Miha Uhan, Marko Jovanović, Matej Janežič, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Authentic leadership is the latest evolutionary stage in leadership development and emphasizes the leader's authenticity. The construct of authenticity was researched by ancient Greek philosophers as 'know thy-self ', and 'thy true self '. Authentic leadership began to develop after 2004. The main reason why the researchers place so much attention to authentic leadership is fact that authentic leadership reaches all of the employees in organizations. Authentic leaders must identify the strengths of their followers and help them with their development and integration towards a common goal, purpose, vision and identity of the organization. Authentic leadership is seen as the final stage in the development of leadership styles, properties of this leadership style, and the consequences of this style have not been fully explored. In our paper we will explore this new style of leadership and its implications.

Regulation of metabolic changes in shredded cabbage by modified atmosphere packaging
Andrej Plestenjak, Tomaž Požrl, Janez Hribar, Tatjana Unuk, Rajko Vidrih, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The influence of different storage conditions on the storability of packaged shredded cabbage has been studied. The cabbage cultivar Fieldrocket was cut and packaged in glass jars and in polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) film. Several initial atmospheres were established within the packaged cut cabbage: 100 % N2, 5 % O2/95 % N2, 10 % O2/90 % N2, normal atmosphere (NA), 70 % O2/30 % N2 and 100 % O2. Samples were stored at two different temperatures of 0 and 10 °C for 7 days. Variation in CO2 and O2 concentrations was higher at 10 °C compared to 0 °C and the highest at the atmosphere consisting of 70 % O2/30 % N2. A decrease of O2 below 3–5 % and an increase of CO2 above 2–5 % in the packed product resulted in the appearance of anaerobic metabolism. An initial atmosphere consisting of 100 % O2, and a storage temperature of 0 °C resulted in delayed anaerobic metabolism compared to other atmospheric conditions and storage temperature of 10 °C. Rinsing of fresh cut cabbage also resulted in lower accumulation of acetaldehyde and ethanol. A higher variation in CO2 and O2 concentrations, and consequent accumulation of anaerobic metabolites had a negative influence on the sensorial properties of the cut cabbage. The higher permeability of PE film compared to PP and glass enabled faster exchange of CO2 and O2, which resulted in lower accumulation of anaerobic metabolites. However, a higher O2 concentration had a negative influence on the colour of fresh-cut cabbage. The best results were achieved by packing the fresh-cut cabbage in PE film with an initial atmosphere of 100 % O2 and stored at 0 °C.

Effect of low-density static magnetic field on the oxidation of ammonium by Nitrosomonas europaea and by activated sludge in municipal wastewater
Jasmina Filipič, Ines Mandić-Mulec, Brigita Tepuš, Vanja Kokol, Barbara Kraigher, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Ammonium removal is a key step in biological wastewater treatment and novel approaches that improve this process are in great demand. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that ammonium removal from wastewater can be stimulated by static magnetic fields. This was achieved by analysis of the effects of static magnetic field (SMF) on the growth and activity of Nitrosomonas europaea, a key ammonia-oxidising bacterium, where increased growth and increased ammonia oxidation rate were detected when bacteria were exposed to SMF at 17 mT. Additionally, the effect of SMF on mixed cultures of ammonia oxidisers in activated sludge, incubated in sequencing batch bioreactors simulating wastewater treatment process, was assessed. SMFs of 30 and 50 mT, but not of 10 mT, increased ammonium oxidation rate in municipal wastewater by up to 77 % and stimulated ammonia oxidiser growth. The results demonstrate the potential for use of static magnetic fields in increasing ammonium removal rates in biological wastewater treatment plants.
