UREJANJE IN OBDELAVA BESEDILHelena Ošlovnik
, 2009, diplomsko delo
Opis: Diplomsko delo obravnava urejanje in obdelavo besedil.

GERMLISH - WORDS AND WORD-FORMATION IN SELECTED GERMAN MAGAZINESKatarina Jelen
, 2012, diplomsko delo
Opis: Throughout the history German language has been influenced by many different languages; today its vocabulary contains words from Latin, French, Italian and what interests me most in my diploma paper – from English. Some words have been a part of the German language for decades – those are loan words. But then again other words would keep their original spelling and pronunciation and those words remained foreign words. What interests me is the term Germlish, which is a combination of English and German language, spoken whether by foreigners trying to speak German, or by the Germans using English expressions excessively. In my diploma paper I focused on the latter version of it: I tried to find out how the Germans accept Germlish. On one hand there are some linguists, critics and organizations, who claim Germlish is a corruption of both languages involved, still others claim Germlish is a way to a common language all over the world. Considering that English is a dominating language, I wanted to know how different fields of German language are influenced by it. I dealt with the word-formation of the language of German youth, economics language and computer language. The word-formational aspects are presented in the theoretical part and in empirical part the anglicisms I took from several German newspapers and magazines are analyzed.

COMPARISON OF NEOLOGISMS USED IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRITISH TABLOIDSAnja Gril
, 2013, diplomsko delo
Opis: Tabloids are a popular media and an important part of British culture and are divided in two categories Red and Black Top British Tabloids. Article writers try daily to get readers attention which they achieve also by creating neologisms. Neologisms are new words that enter a language and are in the case of British Tabloids understandable to readers since they are familiar with their context. Words are formed by different word formational processes where some take place more often than others. In order to understand the formation of words everything from its smallest elements morphemes to its context has to be understood.
This research comprised three daily British Tabloids, two Red Top ones, The Sun and Daily Mirror and one Black Top British Tabloid, Daily Express. The presence of neologisms in article titles was the main interest. Neologisms were counted and analysed. Context, meaning, usefulness, morphemic structure and word-formational processes were analysed for all neologisms.
The results have shown that neologisms are a regular part of British Tabloid language. They appear in different contexts but most often in the one that involves the most sensationalism, this is showbiz. Presence of neologisms is often emphasized by some tolls. New words are often formed of celebrity names and nicknames. Red Top British Tabloids use neologisms more often than The Black Top British Tabloids that tend to be more serious and less sensational. Nearly all neologisms found were nonce words, meaning that they were created for the single purpose only. New phrases were often formed by putting a word in a new context and therefore creating a new meaning. In terms of Grice’s theory of conversational implicature we found out that titles often flout the maxims of quantity and manner for a title can only be understood after reading the whole article. In the process of word formation conversion, compounding, derivation, clipping and blending take place more often than root creation and reduplication.

TRANSLATION OF SELF-HELP BOOKS: TRANSLATION PROBLEMS IN RHONDA BYRNE'S "THE SECRET"Ana Furlan
, 2013, diplomsko delo
Opis: Self-help books are becoming very popular nowadays and have to be translated in other languages in order to be accessible to a wider audience from other countries. All self-help books share the same goal: to help the readers find solutions to their problems. They are written with a specific purpose and have special characteristics, which have to be considered when translating them.
This graduation thesis focuses on the translation of self-help books in general and gives an analysis of some aspects of the translation of a specific self-help book - The Secret. This is a self-help book about happiness and getting and achieving everything the readers want in their life, written by Rhonda Byrne in 2006. The thesis looks into some specific problems the translator faced while translating the book from English into the Slovene language and examines the inconsistencies with the original that occurred in the Slovene translation. The first problem addressed is the decision about the use of formal or informal addressing of readers. The translator decided to use a T/V distinction and addresses the readers with a polite second plural V-form of a verb (“vi”) – “vikanje”. The second problem discussed is the problem of non-equivalence of word-meanings. The most common and important verb that is repeated throughout the whole book is verb “want”. Nevertheless, the verb is not translated consistently and is sometimes replaced with other verbs and words. The third problem is the problem of repetition of the lexical items or phrases, which have a cohesive and a rhetoric function. However, the translator did not preserve all the repetitions. The fourth problem the thesis focuses on is the problem of capitalization of words. Some concepts are capitalized in the original, because they are allegorical personification or because of their importance, yet the capitalization is not preserved in all cases in the translation.
The main focus of the graduation thesis is to determine how the translator solved the problem of pragmatic adjustment of the book to the Slovene audience and their culture.

FORMATION AND FREQUENCY OF RECENT NEOLOGISMS IN ENGLISHMaja Krfogec
, 2013, diplomsko delo
Opis: This diploma thesis deals with new words called neologisms. English is a language that very quickly adopts new words. Language is not static, but it is constantly changing. People are using neologisms more than ever and can be very creative in creating new words. Neologisms are used in science, literature, politics, advertising, linguistics and are created because of a different innovations in society.
In this diploma thesis, neologisms will be presented that were researched and analyzed. The selected neologisms were from Oxford Dictionary Online and were added in the months of August and May. 37 neologisms were investigated from the month of August and 38 neologisms from the month of May, altogether 75 new words. Their purpose was explained and the context in which they occur was shown.
Neologisms were categorized into word-formational categories. We wanted to find out which word-formational process is the most productive when creating neologisms. Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) helped us determine the frequency of selected neologisms.

Forensic and Police Abbreviations and Other Relevant Word Formation Processes in the TV Series CSI: NYAdina Deučman
, 2013, diplomsko delo
Opis: The diploma paper Forensic and Police Abbreviations and Other Relevant Word Formation Processes in the TV Series CSI: NY deals with numerous police, forensic, medical abbreviations and relevant word formation processes which are directly associated with crime scene investigation disciplines. The aim si to list and analyse the use of forensic/police abbreviations and most often used word formation processes in the series' seventh season and compare them to the real forensic and police abbreviations used by police officers and forensic technicians in the United Kingdom and the USA.
The main objectives are to present and describe English abbreviations and word formation processes according to their classification, describe the concept of the discussed TV series and anaylse the types of police and forensic abbreviations in the spin-off’s seventh season by explaining their meaning and providing their frequency of appearance. The same is done for the most often used word formation processes and examples of their use. Furthermore, a comparison of police and forensic abbreviations in the series‘ seventh season to the real forensic and police terminology is discussed.
In the empirical part of my thesis, I present the results and provide interpretations of the questionnaire answered by English language students at our faculty with regard to forensic and police abbreviations. I also determine the percentage of English police and forensic abbreviations used by Slovene police and forensic experts by conducting an interview with a forensic expert.

Word-formational productivity of the Slovene language in the case of sports neologismsIrena Stramljič Breznik
, Ines Voršič
, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek
Opis: Newly created words are a frequent topic of research in modern linguistics. The reason for this is that innovation processes in lexicon are a reflection of dynamic tendencies which occur as a consequence of modern communication requirements. This contribution focuses on the field of sports, using a corpus approach based on the Sketch Engine (SkE). It investigates formations in Slovene with low frequency (e.g. nogometoljubec, karatejka, sankijada). Based on their morphemic structure, it determines whether they are potential neologisms, which are created according to a productive pattern, or nonce formations, which are created according to individual patterns connected with specific text usage, and which as ad-hoc formations do not belong to the productive word-formational patterns. In light of these findings, the question of the combinations of domestic and foreign word-formational elements will be discussed, and consequently also the question of the hybridization of Slovene formations today. The corpus-based approach will enable us to determine whether the analysed material represents a word-formational core or periphery of the lexicon. In order to detect new lexical processes, it is necessary to investigate atypical word-formational processes which open up the creative potential of language. They testify to the dynamic nature of language and to its capability to respond to the different needs of different users in different circumstances.

The Etymology, Use and the Meaning of the Word FuckAleš Horvat
, 2016, diplomsko delo
Opis: Different words have been considered as obscene, immoral, forbidden, taboo, indecent or incendiary at different times throughout our still short civilized human history. From religious profanity (such as damn) to taboo words that were considered sacred and forbidden to even think about. Not so long ago such words as leg (the proper substitute for the word was limb) and all other words for parts of the human body were forbidden and shocking. And even though it seems that today we are pretty much every day using the so called F-word or simply fuck and it is very easy to find it in most places, the word still has some kind of taboo aura around it, since it is still censored on television, some or most papers refuse to print it in its true form, but rather use some kind of substitute (fudge) or even censor it with asterisks (f**k) and the radio bleeps it out or replaces it with a modified sound when it appears in songs. But what is true is that fuck is one of the most useful, versatile, one of the most fun words with wonderfully polymorphous possibilities in the whole English language or as Peter Silverton puts it in his book Filthy English:
"The beginning, the very moment of creation, the starting point for both life and fun: fuck! Or perhaps: sexual intercourse! We all do it. Well, most of us. Our ancestors did it, too – not when they were fishes perhaps but not long after ... And yet the simplest, most direct and longest serving English language word for this most ontologically essential of human acts has, for most of its life, been considered so rude, so disturbing, so nasty, so condemnably yeeeurgh that people have been arrested, tried and jailed for speaking it or writing it. The OED wouldn't even give it page room until 1972. All I can say to that is: fuck! Or: fucking hell! Or: fuck me! Or: how fucking stupid!" (Silverton, 2010, p.20)
In this work I am going to discuss the etymology of the word fuck, its meaning with examples, use as nouns, verbs, idioms, interjections, verbal phrases, acronyms, abbreviations and the way society has viewed fuck and tried to mask it through censorship and alternatives in the media and about the frequency of use.
