Children's Rights in the Sustainable and Digital Environments : Exploring Opportunities and Challenges: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges
2025, zbornik

Opis: The scientific monograph ‘Children's Rights in the Sustainable and Digital Environments: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges’ addresses current and carefully selected topics in the field of children's rights. It specifically focuses on issues where the authors critically analyze and discuss the protection of children's rights in the context of sustainable development and digital transformation, as well as the challenges posed by both environments. The contributors engage in critical discourse and offer in-depth analyses of children's rights from both substantive and procedural legal perspectives, examining developments at the national level as well as within the international legal framework. They clearly identify inconsistencies, shortcomings, and difficulties that children's rights face in the context of sustainability and digitalization. In their contributions, the authors emphasize the importance of safeguarding children's rights in judicial proceedings and highlight the role and responsibilities of both national and international actors in this field. They further discuss selected aspects of children's vulnerability and violations of their rights, especially in relation to children affected by armed conflict, those living in crisis regions, and children with disabilities, web.

Barriers and Facilitators to Medication Adherence among the Vulnerable Elderly: A Focus Group Study
Martina Horvat, Ivan Eržen, Dominika Vrbnjak, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Poor medication adherence is a significant public health issue, especially among the vulnerable elderly, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This study aimed to explore, identify, and understand the barriers and facilitators to medication adherence among vulnerable elderly individuals. We conducted a qualitative study using focus group interviews with 31 participants, including community nurses, social care services, volunteers from non-governmental organizations, patient association members, and informal caregivers, using semi-structured questions and inductive content analysis to gather and analyze qualitative data. Two main categories, “Perceived barriers” and “Facilitative interventions” were developed. The findings revealed multiple barriers, including medication-related barriers, patient-related barriers and barriers related to the healthcare system and healthcare personnel. Participants also highlighted the importance of facilitating interventions like medication management, health education, supportive social networks, and ensuring continuity of care. The study underscores the need for targeted strategies to improve medication adherence among the vulnerable elderly.

The impact of students’ cybersecurity vulnerability behavior on e-learning obstacles
Ibrahim Mohamed Taha, Rajaa Hussein Abd Ali, Ali Abdulhassan Abbas, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background/purpose: This study examines the relationship between students’ cybersecurity vulnerability behavior and e-learning obstacles. With the rapid growth of online education, ensuring the security and privacy of digital platforms has become crucial. In this background, the current study is a first-of-its-kind attempt to understand the relationship between these two variables in the background of higher educational institutions in Iraq. Methods: For this study, the researchers collected data during 2023 from students aged between 19 and 25 enrolled in the University of Karbala, Iraq, using a semi-structured research questionnaire, who were selected through a random sampling method. The questionnaire comprised questions pertaining to the dimensions of both the dependent and the independent variable. A total of 350 valid responses were considered for the analysis in which PLS-SEM was conducted. Results: The outcomes revealed that the professional and human obstacles have a high association with cybersecurity vulnerability behavior. The study also found that the overall obstacles have a significant effect on the cybersecurity vulnerability behavior. All hypotheses were verified and the outcomes confirm that there is an effective relationship between cybersecurity vulnerability behavior and e-learning obstacles Conclusion: Based on the study outcomes, the authors proposed a few recommendations for all the stakeholders of the e-learning process, such as ducational institutions, governments, faculty members, students, and their parents. Though the current study has been confined to a single university in Iraq, future researchers can focus on expanding the study to other higher educational institutions so that a nationwide policy-level initiative can be brought based on the research evidence.

Climate change-related displacement and the determination of refugee status under the 1951 Refugee Convention
Elijah Sriroshan Sritharan, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Climate change and climate-driven migration are two of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century, and there is no legal framework for protecting those displaced across national borders for climate-related reasons. The 1951 Refugee Convention hardly applies to human mobility in the context of climate change. This paper was written in the hopes of initiating a discussion concerning an alternative perspective through which persons fleeing natural disasters linked to climate change may satisfy the eligibility conditions for recognition of refugee status. Expanding the definition of refugee as defined in the Convention by including the notion of vulnerability to climate disasters that are caused by the underlying socio-economic conditions in the claimant’s home country and the role of discrimination in causing differential exposure to the climate-related disasters in legal definitions might open the door for the availability of refugee status for persons fleeing in the context of climate change. This paper proposes the adoption of a reformed human rights-based interpretation, particularly with regard to the individual nature of refugee status determination. Recalibrating the Convention to facilitate climate-induced migration could reduce political tension and social unrest in receiving countries.

Country life in the digital era : comparison of technology use and cybercrime victimization between residents of rural and urban environments in Slovenia
Igor Bernik, Kaja Prislan Mihelič, Anže Mihelič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Cybercrime is one of the most significant security challenges of the 21st century. However, official statistics do not provide insights into its prevalence and nature. Representative cross-sectional field studies may help fill this gap, focusing on differences between urban and rural technology users. We (a) investigated the association between the purpose of computers and other electronic device usage and perceived vulnerability, (b) compared the differences in the purpose of computers or other electronic device use and perceived vulnerability, and (c) compared the perceived cyber victimization between residents of rural and urban areas. We conducted a field study that resulted in a representative sample of the Republic of Slovenia in Europe. We found several significant differences in the purpose of technology use and perceived cyber victimization. Furthermore, the results indicate that the purpose of technology use is somehow associated with perceived vulnerability in cyberspace; however, such associations are different in cyberspace than in the material world.

Geo-information technology for disaster risk assessment
Đorđe Ćosić, Sađan Popov, Dušan Sakulski, Ana Pavlović, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The Serbian territory (including the territory of the former Yugoslavia) has been continuously exposed to different hazards, often with tragic consequences. Earthquakes and floods, usually followed by landslides, are the most dominant hazards in that region. Disaster risk reduction, prevention and early warning, as an integral part of sustainable development, do not exist in Serbia. That is one of the main reasons why the disaster-related damage is high. Despite very long experience in engineering and resources management in Serbia, there are no scientifically supported and standardized disaster risk-assessment procedures. Expertise only exists in the field of engineering-based hazard assessment. The risk-assessment method proposed in this research includes, apart from hazards, parameters such as vulnerability, exposure and safety. It considers the environmental and social components of risk management. The proposed method, implementing combined mathematical and 3D GIS tools, was applied for the Danube River, Petrovaradin (the city of Novi Sad) area, for which data were available. The relationship between the risk parameters is calculated and graphically presented. Methods like this one should contribute to a shift from a passive disaster-related defense to a proactive disaster risk management, as well as from emergency management only, to disaster prevention, preparedness and mitigation activities, in Serbia and the Western Balkan Region.

On vulnerability measures of networks
Rija Erveš, Darja Rupnik Poklukar, Janez Žerovnik, 2013, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: As links and nodes of interconnection networks are exposed to failures, one of the most important features of a practical networks design is fault tolerance. Vulnerability measures of communication networks are discussed including the connectivities, fault diameters, and measures based on Hosoya- Wiener polynomial. An upper bound for the edge fault diameter of product graphs is proved.
