An Analysis of Slang in English and Slovene Teen Magazines
Polonca Volavšek, 2010, magistrsko delo

Opis: The thesis is about slang in English and Slovene teen magazines. In the theoretical section, I present and comment on different definitions of slang. I describe the history of slang and development of slang dictionaries. In addition, I point out kinds of slang and the most frequently discussed misinterpretations about slang. I draw attention to features of slang, reasons for using slang and speakers’ attitude towards slang in comparison to other social varieties of a language. I also examine textese – the language of SMS messages. In the empirical section, I analyse slang in four English and three Slovene teen magazines and focus primarily on vocabulary and grammar. The results have confirmed my core hypothesis about the presence of slang in written language. I also hypothesize that slang influences changes in grammar, although they are not as transparent as vocabulary changes. These findings have partly confirmed my hypothesis. English teen magazines offer a wide rage of non-standard grammatical examples which show a correlation between slang and changes in slang grammar. However, I found no non-standard grammatical features of Slovene slang. Furthermore, the subject of my research was the presence of SMS messages in slang. The analysis has shown that some language elements of SMS messages appear in English and Slovene teen magazines. Besides, I was interested in the impact of foreign loanwords in English and Slovene slang. I established that there are only a few examples of German loanwords in English slang. On the contrary, I found a large number of English loanwords in Slovene slang.

Špela Žibert, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: In my diploma paper I write about reading the novel in a foreign language, that is English in this case, and acquiring vocabulary from it. The novel is The Railway Children written by Edith Nesbit. The paper is about reading as a process, reading as a skill, reading strategies and styles, reading techniques, problems and difficulties that learners have to deal with when reading. I also studied learning vocabulary and learning vocabulary from the novel. I mentioned anticipated problems and experience from my teaching practice. I chose this subject because I teach in a primary school where the learners in the ninth grade attend the English competition every year and this is the literary work they have to read for it. They have to deal with formal language, spoken language and direct speech which is written phonetically. There are also old-fashioned expressions and phrases that had to be interpreted.

Irish English: Vocabulary and Pronunciation
Lidija Potočnik, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: English is a world language. In UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand it is spoken as a first language. There are numerous countries where English is spoken as a second language and in even more countries where English is spoken as a foreign language. Nowadays English is considered to be lingua franca of the world communication. There exist different varieties of English, and Irish English is one of them. English was brought to Ireland by the British in the seventeenth century. Therefore, Irish English is strongly influenced by Irish language which is the first official language in Ireland; English is the second. There are two main varieties of English in Ireland; Northern and Southern variety. Northern variety was historically influenced by the Scots English, and Southern Irish English developed under the influence of English English. Therefore there exist several varieties of pronunciation and differences in vocabulary. Of course, both Irish English varieties differ from British English in vocabulary and pronunciation and that is also emphasized in this graduation thesis.

Saša Puntar, 2013, diplomsko delo

Opis: This thesis discusses the influence of Irish language on the use of English language in Ireland. It reveals how the Irish speak, how much Irish English vocabulary they understand, how much of it they use and in what circumstances. Irish language is greatly reflected in English language spoken in Ireland and Irish English adopted linguistic, phonological and stylistic features of both Irish and English language. The thesis consists of a theoretical and empirical part. The first part discusses several aspects of Irish English such as history, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. The latter part consists of a questionnaire analysis and the interpretation of the results. The purpose of the empirical part was to explore to what extent, where and how often Irish people use Irish English words in everyday communication. The results confirmed my hypotheses and showed us that the young are not as familiar with it as the older Irish people are, however they all seem to use it rarely and always in informal situations. The literature and online sources on Irish English language were accurately examined before and during the research.

Mojca Matjašec, 2014, diplomsko delo

Opis: When we communicate with each other we use different types of speech acts. We use different types of speech acts when we are talking, writing an e-mail or a message, even when we give a comment on an article. Speech used in communication can be more or less polite, more or less direct and allow more or fewer options to choose between. Furthermore, we can choose between formal or informal vocabulary. Formal language is more frequent in written and informal language in spoken communication. Last but not least, words can have positive, negative or neutral emotive meaning. Speech act, politeness, formality of language and emotional meaning are all presented in the theoretical part of this graduation thesis. In view of these characteristics of the use of language, the main purpose of this graduation thesis is a linguistic analysis of some linguistic aspects of comment sections of online articles. The analysis is focused on the example of an English tabloid article, which is taken from the internet edition of the English tabloid Daily Mail.

Linguistic change and its forms
Marjana Protner, 2014, diplomsko delo

Opis: Language changes constantly. It has been changing for centuries and it will be changing in the future. Changes happen on all levels of a particular language: in spelling, in grammar, in meaning, and in pronunciation. Most of the language changes are changes which appear independent of the wills of the speakers of the language. When we study the language change we must not concentrate only on one particular geographical area where this language is spoken. We must try to research language as an entirety. The reason for this is that, although people speak the same language, some changes happen only in one special geographical area or only among one group of people.

Expanding vocabulary through translation
Melita Koletnik, 2012, strokovni članek

Opis: Owing mostly to the overwhelming tide of a communicative approach in foreign language teaching, translation was widely excluded from language classes for much of the 20th century. Nevertheless, translation never went away completely; it patiently waited for a time when the language teaching community would again discover synergies between translation and established approaches, thence reassess its lost potential. As is established herein, such potential is at its greatest and most effective in relation to vocabulary, where - based on an eclectic method which can be applied at all stages in specialised and general language teaching the author believes translation is both necessary and effective. This paper, building on the theoretical and methodological frameworks, together with the authors own classroom observations, reassesses the role of translation and proposes a set of activities which could be used by teachers of English for specific purposes and translator trainers alike. It concludes with a recommendation as to the universal applicability of translation, especially in the context of languages for specific purposes and translator training.

Vocabulary acquisition for future nursing staff
Kirsten Hempkin, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Research suggests that many ESL teachers either modify or supplement the set textbooks they use in class, or develop their own materials for classroom use. Indeed, in recent years, the internet in particular has opened up a rich and at times perhaps baffling array of resources for those ESL practitioners who wish to incorporate authentic materials into their teaching. While the benefits of authentic materials are well-documented, their use is, however, not entirely unproblematic, and as research into the field of material (authentic or otherwise) development grows, this raises a number of issues as to the form these materials should take and how they can best be employed. This article presents a set of vocabulary building activities for future nursing staff; these activities are in use at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Maribor. The article explains the rationale behind them in light of the theoretical framework of language acquisition that underpins them.

Pragmatic functions of Christian expressions in spoken discourse
Darinka Verdonik, Zdravko Kačič, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Different kinds of pragmatic expressions in spoken discourse, such as discourse markers, interjections, topic orientation markers, pragmatic deictics, general extenders, etc., have attracted the attention of researchers over recent decades. However, expressions that have their origins within religions have not as yet been studied from the pragmatic perspective, even though in everyday conversation they are used in non-religious contexts and content-free manners more often than within a religious context. The present study is based on the GOS Slovenian reference speech corpus, and covers the more common Christian expressions used in the corpus data, namely: bog "God", bože "God", marija "Mary", madona "Madonna", jezus "Jesus", hudič "Devil", vrag "Devil". The study attempts to highlight the contexts in which these expressions are used, as well as the pragmatic functions they perform.

Doroteja Hadner, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: The thesis presents a topic that is nowadays very current in the field of education, even though it takes places outside of school, and that is individualized learning a foreign language. More and more children need additional help with acquisition and understanding of a foreign language and for this reason, the purpose of this thesis was to present individualized learning, to explore different approaches and methods of language teaching, which have evolved over the years and have been the subject of research and opinions of various authors. For learners, certain elements presented a big obstacle in learning a foreign language, which is why the thesis also presents different techniques of learning vocabulary and grammar according to various authors, which are also compared with our personal experiences, gained from individualized learning. The empirical part was based on a research, where we compared English examination tests of two learners, who attended individualized learning through all four years of secondary school. In each year, we made an analysis of both tests individually, compared learners’ mistakes and progress, and gave solutions to improve learners’ knowledge and understanding of a foreign language. Furthermore, we compared our personal experiences based on individualized learning with experiences and suggestions of other authors in connection with the use of different methods and approaches, and with learning vocabulary and grammar. Through theory and research, where the descriptive and comparative research method was used, we discovered that individualized learning was and will remain a very useful and effective tool in learning a foreign language, which gave learners excellent results at school, enriched their experience with the foreign language and most importantly, it raised their self-confidence in using a foreign language.
