Independent vs. collaborative blockchain research and development : operational decisions in food supply chains
Y. X. Kang, J. Y. Feng, W. J. Zhang, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: As blockchain increasingly demonstrates advantages in enhancing consumer trust and reducing collaborative production costs in food supply chains, more food companies are developing blockchain-based supply chain management platforms. However, in a complex and competitive supply chain environment, food companies face critical operational management challenges in selecting appropriate blockchain R&D approaches and determining optimal R&D levels. This study examines two competing food companies deciding on their optimal food production and blockchain R&D levels. We first established a benchmark model without blockchain adoption. Then, we constructed supply chain operation models for both independent and collaborative blockchain R&D scenarios. By comparing equilibrium decisions across different models, we derived the optimal blockchain R&D model and operational strategies in food supply chains. Furthermore, we extended our analysis to consider asymmetric food substitution scenarios. Our findings revealed that independent blockchain R&D tends to increase equilibrium food production and is more suitable for premium food supply chains. Conversely, collaborative blockchain R&D significantly enhanced overall supply chain profitability. As spillover effects increase, food companies are likely to favor independent blockchain R&D to achieve higher R&D levels and stronger market competitiveness. Additionally, we demonstrated that blockchain R&D levels are influenced by food substitutability and quality credibility.

Peridynamic modeling of fatigue in layered metal composites
Filip Jerenec, 2025, doktorska disertacija

Opis: In additive manufacturing, tooling is frequently built from laminated metal composites (LMCs) that stack dissimilar metals to shorten production times. Accurately predicting fatigue-crack growth in these unequal-strength laminates is difficult—particularly across joints where property mismatches steer crack paths. This work combines experiments and simulations to study fatigue-crack growth in an LMC formed by laser-melting AISI 316L powder onto high-strength structural steel S960. Crack growth was modeled with a linearized bond-based peridynamics (PD) formulation, with interfacial bonds tuned to the measured elastic-modulus gradient, and coupled to the Kinetic Theory of Fracture (KTF). Unlike conventional S–N–based approaches, KTF parameters were calibrated directly from measured crack-length–versus-cycles (a-N) data. Material behavior in the base metals and through the transition zone was characterized via tensile tests, hardness mapping, and nanoindentation; fatigue-crack growth data came from cyclic tests on compact-tension (CT) specimens. The model reproduced the observed differences in crack-growth rates between homogeneous and bimaterial specimens, and KTF parameter transferability across loads and geometries was confirmed for homogeneous samples. A key outcome is a practical calibration workflow for KTF within a nonlocal PD framework, enabling predictive simulation of fatigue-crack growth across multilayer metallic joints.

Optimization of operations in bus company service workshops using queueing theory
Sergej Težak, Drago Sever, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Public transport companies are aware that the success of their operations largely depends on the proper sizing and optimization of their processes. Among the key activities are the maintenance and repair of the vehicle fleet. This paper presents the application of mathematical optimization methods from the field of operations research to improve the efficiency of service workshops for bus maintenance and repair. Based on an analysis of collected data using queueing theory, the authors assessed the current system performance and found that the queueing system still has spare capacity and could be downsized, which aligns with the company’s management goals. Specifically, the company plans to reduce the number of bus repair service stations (servers in a queueing system). The main question is whether the system will continue to function effectively after this reduction. Three specific downsizing solutions were proposed and evaluated using queueing theory methods: extending the daily operating hours of the workshops, reducing the number of arriving buses, and increasing the productivity of a service station (server). The results show that, under high system load, only those solutions that increase the productivity of individual service stations (servers) in the queueing system provide optimal outcomes. Other solutions merely result in longer queues and associated losses due to buses waiting for service, preventing them from performing their intended function and causing financial loss to the company.

Analysis of gas flow distribution in a fluidized bed using two-fluid model with kinetic theory of granular flow and coupled CFD-DEM: a numerical study
Matija Založnik, Matej Zadravec, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Fluidized bed systems are widely used in chemical and process engineering due to their excellent heat and mass transfer properties. Numerical modeling plays a crucial role in understanding and optimizing these systems, with the two-fluid model enhanced by the kinetic theory of granular flow (TFM-KTGF) and the coupled computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) emerging as leading techniques. This study employs both models to simulate gas-solid interactions and evaluates their performance using a benchmark single-spout fluidized bed case validated against experimental data. Subsequently, the influence of particle presence on gas flow distribution through a non-uniform distribution plate is analyzed. The results show that the common assumption of proportional flow distribution based on the opening area fraction is inaccurate, particularly in the presence of particles. Both numerical models capture this behavior, with TFM-KTGF showing trends comparable to the coupled CFD-DEM approach but at significantly reduced computational cost. The findings highlight the importance of accounting for particle dynamics in distribution plate design and promote the TFM-KTGF approach as a promising alternative for large-scale simulations.

Advancing intelligent toolpath generation: A systematic review of CAD–CAM integration in Industry 4.0 and 5.0
Marko Simonič, Iztok Palčič, Simon Klančnik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This systematic literature review investigates advancements in intelligent computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD–CAM) integration and toolpath generation, analyzing their evolution across Industry 4.0 and emerging Industry 5.0 (I5.0) paradigms. Using the theory–contextcharacteristics–methodology framework, the study synthesizes 51 peer-reviewed studies (from 2000 to 2025) to map theoretical foundations, industrial applications, technical innovations, and methodological trends. Findings reveal that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning dominate research, driving breakthroughs in feature recognition, adaptive toolpath optimization, and predictive maintenance. However, human-centric frameworks central to I5.0, such as socio-technical collaboration, remain underexplored. High-precision sectors (aerospace, biomedical) lead adoption, while small and medium enterprises (SMEs) lag due to resource constraints. Technologically, AI-driven automation and STEP-NC standards show promise, yet interoperability gaps persist due to fragmented data models and legacy systems. Methodologically, AI-based modeling prevails (49 % of studies), but experimental validation and socio-technical frameworks are sparse. Key gaps include limited real-time adaptability, insufficient AI training datasets, and slow adoption of sustainable practices. The review highlights the urgent need for standardized data exchange protocols, scalable solutions for SMEs, and human-AI collaboration models to align CAD–CAM integration with I5.0’s

Fluxbranes, generalized symmetries, and Verlinde’s metastable monopole
Mirjam Cvetič, Jonathan J. Heckman, Max Hübner, Ethan Torres, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The stringy realization of generalized symmetry operators involves wrapping “branes at infinity”. We argue that in the case of continuous (as opposed to discrete) symmetries, the appropriate objects are fluxbranes. We use this perspective to revisit the phase structure of Verlinde’s monopole, a proposed particle satisfies the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) condition when gravity is decoupled, but is non-BPS and metastable when gravity is switched on. Geometrically, this monopole is obtained from branes wrapped on locally stable but globally trivial cycles of a compactification geometry. The fluxbrane picture allows us to characterize electric (respectively magnetic) confinement (respectively screening) in the 4D theory as a result of monopole decay. In the presence of the fluxbrane, this decay also creates lower-dimensional fluxbranes, which in the field theory is interpreted as the creation of an additional topological field theory sector.

Generalized symmetries, gravity, and the swampland
Mirjam Cvetič, Jonathan J. Heckman, Max Hübner, Ethan Torres, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Generalized global symmetries are a common feature of many quantum field theories decoupled from gravity. By contrast, in quantum gravity/the Swampland program, it is widely expected that all global symmetries are either gauged or broken, and this breaking is in turn related to the expected completeness of the spectrum of charged states in quantum gravity. We investigate the fate of such symmetries in the context of 7D and 5D vacua realized by compact Calabi-Yau spaces with localized singularities in M theory. We explicitly show how gravitational backgrounds support additional dynamical degrees of freedom which trivialize (i.e., “break”) the higher symmetries of the local geometric models. Local compatibility conditions across these different sectors lead to gluing conditions for gauging higher-form and (in the 5D case) higher-group symmetries. This also leads to a preferred global structure of the gauge group and higher-form gauge symmetries. In cases based on a genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau space, we also get an F-theory model in one higher dimension with corresponding constraints on the global form of the gauge group.

Evolutionary game theory use in healthcare : a synthetic knowledge synthesis
Peter Kokol, Jernej Završnik, Helena Blažun Vošner, Bojan Žlahtič, 2025, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: Evolutionary game theory (EGT), originating from Darwinian competition studies, offers a powerful framework for understanding complex healthcare interactions where multiple stakeholders with conflicting interests evolve strategies over time. Unlike traditional game theory, EGT accounts for bounded rationality and strategic evolution through imitation and selection. Aims and objectives: In our study, we use Synthetic Knowledge Synthesis (SKS) that integrates descriptive bibliometrics and bibliometric mapping to systematically analyze the application of EGT in healthcare. The SKS aimed to identify prolific research topics, suitable publishing venues, and productive institutions/countries for collaboration and funding. Data was harvested from the Scopus bibliographic database, encompassing 539 publications from 2000 to June 2025, Results: Production dynamics is revealing an exponential growth in scholarly output since 2019, with peak productivity in 2024. Descriptive bibliometrics showed China as the most prolific country (376 publications), followed by the United States and the United Kingdom. Key institutions are predominantly Chinese, and top journals include PLoS One and Frontiers in Public Health. Funding is primarily from Chinese entities like the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Bibliometric mapping identified five key research themes: game theory in cancer research, evolution game-based simulation of supply management, evolutionary game theory in epidemics, evolutionary games in trustworthy connected public health, and evolutionary games in collaborative governance. Conclusions: Despite EGT’s utility, significant research gaps exist in methodological robustness, data availability, contextual modelling, and interdisciplinary translation. Future research should focus on integrating machine learning, longitudinal data, and explicit ethical frameworks to enhance EGT’s practical application in adaptive, patient-centred healthcare systems

Relations between polynomials based on perfect matchings and independent sets of CERS
Niko Tratnik, Petra Žigert Pleteršek, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this paper, we firstly focus on catacondensed even ring systems (shortly CERS) without any linearly connected adjacent triple of f inite faces. For such a graph G, we describe a bijection between the set of all perfect matchings (Kekulé structures) of G and the set of all independent sets of the inner dual of G, which enables us to prove the equality between three polynomials: the sextet polynomial of G, the independence polynomial of the inner dual of G, and the newly introduced link polynomial of G. These equalities imply that the number of perfect matchings of G equals the number of resonant sets of G and also the number of independent sets of the inner dual of G. Moreover, we show that the number of edges of the resonance graph of G coincides with the derivative of the mentioned polynomials evaluated at x = 1. Finally, we provide the generalization of the results to all peripherally 2-colorable graphs.

Cultural moderators of green product purchase intention : an examination through the lens of the theory of planned behavior
Nika Rakuša, Borut Milfelner, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Despite their potential for promoting environmental sustainability, understanding consumer adoption of green products is limited since such behavior is complex, as it may differ from typical purchasing motives and cultural values. Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was used in this study to address the main research problem of how PBC attitudes, subjective norms, environmental (un)concern, and environmental knowledge, influence consumers’ green product purchase intention. It also explores how cultural values moderate these relationships, specifically man-nature orientation and LTO. This study proposes a structural model with multigroup analysis to address the moderating impacts on a sample of 216 respondents participating in an online survey. Results show that attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and environmental knowledge positively influence consumers’ green product purchase intention. The group analysis results imply that the dominant group’s environmental concern negatively impacts purchase intention, while this relationship is not significant in the subordinate group. Also, the influence of subjective norms on purchase intention is significantly stronger in the dominant group. The long-term orientation also moderates the relationship between attitude toward green products and purchase intention. The insights from this research extend the literature in TPB and provide practical implications to marketing managers concerning developing marketing communication strategies, perceived value proposals, and the reputation of green products.
