Validation of a Slovenian version of the healthy lifestyle and personal control questionnaire (HLPCQ) for use with patients in family medicine
Adrijana Svenšek, Gregor Štiglic, Mateja Lorber, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background Chronic non-communicable diseases are the world’s leading cause of death and disability. The emerging field of lifestyle medicine requires equipping healthcare professionals with instruments, knowledge, skills and competencies. Measuring an individual’s lifestyle with a valid and reliable instrument is the first step in promoting it. The aim of the study was to validate the Slovenian adaptation of the Healthy Lifestyle and Personal Control Questionnaire (HLPCQ). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 666 questionnaire participants, and they were adult participants (aged 18 and above) from family medicine practices with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) risk factors (e.g., hypertension, high cholesterol) but without a diagnosis of acute CVDs. The questionnaire included demographic data and anthropological measures and a translated English HLPCQ questionnaire. The instrument was translated using the forward-backwards translation method. The study was conducted in accordance with the principles of the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki. In addition to assessing the construct validity of the questionnaire, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to determine content and face validity, and internal consistency reliability. Results The mean age of male participants was 41.34 (± 13.220) years, the mean age of female participants was 40.31 (± 11.905) years. The Cronbach’s alpha was 0.852, and all questionnaire subscales had positive correlations. Sampling adequacy was confirmed by the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) index (0.851), and Bartlett’s test of sphericity was significant (χ² = 4647.694, p < 0.001), indicating suitability for Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA revealed a fivefactor solution, accounting for 50.67% of the total variance. Conclusions The most influential factors for a healthy lifestyle were daily routine, healthy dietary choices, avoidance of harmful dietary habits, organized physical activity, and social and mental balance. The Slovenian version had high factor validity and reliability. It can be used in Slovenian Community Health Centre to assess an individual’s control over various lifestyle dimensions. The instrument also holds potential for use in public health initiatives, supporting early identification of lifestyle-related risk factors and promoting preventive care strategies in the primary care setting.

Psychometric testing of the Slovene version of the Perceived Inventory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing
Cvetka Krel, Dominika Vrbnjak, Gregor Štiglic, Sebastjan Bevc, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The Perceived Inventory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing (PITCCN) questionnaire has been designed to measure technological competency as caring in nursing practice. It incorporates the use of technology with the fundamental principles of caring that are central to nursing. As there were no psychometrically sound instruments to quantify the concept of technological competency as caring in the Slovene language, we adapted the English version of the questionnaire to the local environment. The goal was to assess the level of psychometric properties of the PITCCN investigated in Slovene hospitals. Methods: Content validity was conducted with eight experts and quantified by the content validity index (CVI) and the modified Cohen’s kappa index. Face validity was assessed through discussions with participants from the target culture in the pilot study. To assess construct validity and internal consistency, a cross-sectional research methodology was used on a convenience sample of 121 nursing personnel from four hospitals. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to examine construct validity, while Cronbach’s alpha and adjusted item-total correlations were used to measure internal consistency. Results: The content and face validity of PITCCN were adequate. The scale validity index (S-CVI) was 0.97. Cronbach’s α was 0.92, and subscale reliabilities ranged from 0.810 to 0.925. PCA showed four components, which explained more than 73.49% of the variance. Conclusions: The Slovenian version of PITCCN (PITCCN_SI) has good psychometric properties.

The validity and reliability of the Slovenian version of the health literacy questionnaire short-form (HLS-EU-Q16) among adults and older adults
Monika Lamot, Andrej Kirbiš, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction: Health literacy is an important predictor of health behavior and self-rated health, playing a crucial role in shaping public health outcomes. Valid and reliable health literacy assessments are essential for effectively tailoring health interventions, particularly in different cultural contexts. Several questionnaires have been developed to measure health literacy, including the widely used 47-item Health Literacy Questionnaire and its shorter versions. However, the validity of these shorter and more time efficient HLS-EU versions, such as the 16-item HLS-EU-Q16, has been less extensively researched in different age subgroups. Given Slovenia’s aging population and the differences in health literacy between adults and older adults, it is important to assess whether the HLS-EU-Q16 performs reliably across these groups. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the 16-item health literacy questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16) in Slovenia across two age groups: adults and older adults. Methods: We analyzed representative Slovenian sample data from the Health Literacy of Adults study. The sample included 2,327 adults aged 23–64 years (53.7% women) and 876 older adults aged 65–99 years (55.7% women). Results: Construct validity revealed a modified three-factor structure of the HLS-EU-Q16 among adults, reflecting a broader conceptualization of health literacy that encompasses overlapping domains of health promotion, disease prevention, and health care. In contrast, a two-factor structure emerged among older adults, indicating a more consolidated approach where these domains are perceived as part of an integrated health management strategy. This suggests that adults may conceptualize health literacy across multiple, yet interconnected dimensions, while older adults approach it more holistically. Convergent validity, reliability, concurrent-predictive, concurrent, and discriminant validity results were satisfactory for both age groups. Predictive validity, however, provided somewhat inadequate results, as the tool poorly predicted certain health behaviors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity, in both age groups. Conclusion: Overall, the HLS-EU-Q16 demonstrated adequate validity and reliability among both adults and older adults, indicating that it is an appropriate instrument for assessing health literacy in Slovenia.

Critical thinking in education : why to avoid logical fallacies?
Janez Bregant, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The study argues for the claim that a correct argumentation, i.e. a non-fallacious or good reasoning, should be the essential part of the education process, which is not always the case. The bad argumentation makes human standards and interpersonal relationships worse, and leads to the growth of social conflicts and an instable society. If the legislature, executive and judiciary branches of power did not listen to good arguments, our lives would not be as good as they are since the state might pass bad, dangerous and unjust laws. A person trained in critical thinking starting in their youth would be able to tell a difference between good and bad arguments and recognize the fact that accepting the former and dropping the latter is the only way to avoid the above mentioned negative characteristics of a society. By teaching pupils how to employ the prescribed standards of a correct argumentation using everyday examples helps them to avoid adopting certain views on the ground of their popularity, affections produced in observers, their popularity etc., which are classic examples of logical fallacies. An early training in critical thinking could make obvious the fact that, a democracy consisting among other things also in a social, racial and gender equality, after all, does not mean that sometimes left arguments win and sometimes the right ones, and that there is no difference between them in the long run.

Validity of the “fall back” test for boldness
Saša Veličković, Miloš Paunović, Vladan Vukašinović, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Synonyms for the word boldness include courage, fearlessness, heroism and bravery. The best examples of courage in sport are athletes who, despite difficult situations, conditions and strong competition, perform very risky elements, break records, etc. The "Fall back" measurement instrument has been used in the selection process for artistic gymnastics. Bearing in mind that this test requires a drop back down an inclined plane, it requires a degree of courage in the realization of this motor task. The aim of this research is to determine the validity of the "fall back" test and to answer the question: Is the "Fall back" test actually a measure of courage among beginners in the sport? In this study, the research sample consisted of 16 boys and 33 girls, third graders from the Jovan Cvijic elementary school in Kostolac, aged nine years (+/- 6 months). The sample of variables represented the results written using two measurement instruments: 1. Psychological survey -test of boldness and courage - PSBC (a test modeled after the - Erikson`s theory of Psyhosocial Development test - About.com Psyhology); 2. Situational motor measuring instrument - Fall back - MFIB. The resulting measurements were analyzed by the appropriate statistical methods, which are congruent with the set objective and task ofthe study. The validity of the "Fall back" situational-motor test is determined by calculating the coefficient of correlation (r) between said composite test and a psychological test of courage. The very high coefficients of correlation that resulted in all three cases (total sample r = .846, sample of boys r = .873, a sample of girls r = .845) indicate a high validity level for the test, "Fall back", that is, the subject of measurement in the test, largely corresponds with the subject of measurement in the PSBC psychological test. The height of the correlation coefficient also justifies the use of the "Fall back" test as a composite test. A high validity of the "Fall back" measurement instrument (MFIB), which is indicated by the high Pearson coefficients of correlation between the"Fall back" measurement instruments and the psychological test of courage and boldness, was established for all three samples of respondents.

On the validity of cross-cultural social studies using student samples
Sergej Flere, Miran Lavrič, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Student samples have become a widely used resource in the study of not only particular phenomena and problems within individual environments but also of their study within a cross-cultural context. A number of such studies, most often generalizing their results to the level of cultures, are illustrated in this article. In addition, the authors carry out a number of empirical tests of the generalizability of results attained on student samples in cross-cultural research. Based on the World Values Survey data, mean values of four sociologically and psychologically relevant measures are compared between national and student samples of twenty-three countries. Results suggest that the findings attained on student samples can be viewed cautiouslyas a good indicator of national sample rankings in cross-national comparisons.
