1. Pathways to Alternative Transport Mode Choices among University Students and Staff—Commuting to the University of Maribor since 2010Branka Trček, Beno Mesarec, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The study of commuting behavior at the University of Maribor (UM) was the subject of our
research, which focused on the building complex of the four technical faculties (BCTF) and was based
on the analysis of two questionnaire surveys (with 1057 and 462 respondents, respectively) and the
transport policies implemented at the study site from 2010 to 2020. The research aimed to identify the
factors influencing student and staff mode choice/shift over a decade period and to understand the
weaknesses, strengths, and opportunities for improving sustainable mobility at the university. Since
2010, active commuting has predominated among students, while car use has decreased by 22%.
Female students were 16% more likely to walk than their peers, while male students were 5% and
12% more likely to use bicycles and cars, respectively. Active commuting and car use by staff have
not changed since 2010, and there was an insignificant difference between genders, 63% of whom
used cars. Mode shifts were primarily related to trip origins, subsidization of bus use, availability or
unavailability of free parking, and parking fees. Questionnaire responses were a powerful tool for
finding the most effective interventions to manage transport at universities. The results also suggest
that transport policies can be more effective if they are planned in coordination with housing policies. 2. The changing world dynamics of research performanceMarko Marhl, Rene Markovič, Vladimir Grubelnik, Matjaž Perc, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In recent years, a notable diversification in the geographical representation of the World's top universities could be observed. Chinese universities play an increasingly prominent role in these rankings, thus indicating that we might be in the midst of a regional shift in academic performance. To explore this dynamics, we analyze seven years' worth of data used for university rankings by academic subjects from the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). We focus on China, Europe, the USA, and other global regions of the world. We find that China has indeed seen an unprecedented growth in Engineering and Life Sciences research, positioning itself rather firmly as a leader in these fields. Conversely, the USA leads in the Social Sciences, while Europe excels in Geography, Ecology, Public and Business Administration, and Pharmacy. Other regions worldwide stand out in Transportation Science, Nursing, and Hospitality & Tourism Management. These results reveal the evolving landscape of global academic research, highlighting regional strengths and emerging world trends in subject-specifc excellence. 3. Analysis of study engagement of students in sloveniaDaniil Riumin, 2021, diplomsko delo Opis: Education at every time of our history was an important part of peoples’ lives. Society developed and so developed education, stating new goals and requiring more time, and becoming more complicated. Today we are living in the era of information. Information nowadays has the greatest value. The modern world’s market is based on information and operations around it. Education has also adjusted to modern trends and now higher education became in demand. The more information you obtain and can operate with the more successful you are today. The GDP of developed countries is strongly connected to the success of higher education institutes. That is why many countries nowadays invest in higher education. One of these countries is Slovenia that made higher education free. Investing so many resources Slovenia is interested in getting high-quality human resources of university graduates. That is why it is very important to consider all factors that affect study success to make them all work. One of the main factors affecting it is study engagement. The main goal of this Diploma work is to research the level of study engagement of university students in Slovenia and analyze the reasons for it.
We use the student version of the “UWES” questionnaire to find the level of study engagement of Slovene students and our part of the questionnaire to detect reasons and understand better the situation with study engagement. Three hypotheses were stated to help to perform accurate research.
Results of the research showed, that there is no correlation between an average grade in high school and level of study engagement. It also showed an absence of correlation between the level of parents’ education and student’s level of study engagement. According to research results, students that are working on the side of their studies are less engaged in classes, than their colleagues that do not work. 4. Factors influencing mathematics achievement of university students of social sciencesAlenka Brezavšček, Janja Jerebic, Gregor Rus, Anja Žnidaršič, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The paper aims to investigate the main factors influencing the mathematics achievement of social sciences university students in Slovenia. A conceptual model was derived where three categories of variables were taken into account: attitude towards mathematics and math anxiety, engagement in learning activities, and attitude towards involving technology in learning mathematics. Data were collected for seven consecutive academic years and analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results showed a very high coefficient of determination for mathematics achievement (0.801), indicating that variables “Perceived Level of Math Anxiety”, “Self-Engagement in Mathematics Course at University”, and “Perceived Usefulness of Technology in Learning Mathematics”, together, explain 80.1% of the total variance. Based on our findings, we can conclude that teaching in secondary school is a crucial determinant for success in mathematics at university. It is essential to identify the best methods for secondary school math teachers which will help them give future students better entry-level knowledge for universities. These methods will, hopefully, also improve the level of mathematics self-confidence, as well as lower the level of math anxiety, which all considerably affect the performance of students in university mathematics. 5. Differences in personal innovativeness in the domain of information technology among university students and teachersAndrej Šorgo, Mateja Ploj Virtič, Kosta Dolenc, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Two online surveys among 1105 university students and 656 employees were conducted with the inclusion of the construct Personal Innovativeness in the domain of Information Technologies (PIIT). After calculating descriptive statistics, statistically significant differences between personal innovativeness of university students and teachers were sought by the application of one-way ANOVA. The first and most important finding was that average perceived PIIT of teachers and students falls around the middle of the seven-point scale, which cannot be regarded as a plausible predictor of upgrading the University as an Innovative Ecosystem. The second was that university teachers scored higher than their students, a situation that could produce an expectancy conflict between those who want to work in an innovative way and those who would prefer study by the book. Teaching assistants, who should belong to the generation of digital natives, are only slightly more innovative than university teachers, who can be regarded as digital immigrants. Assuming that innovativeness can be upgraded by learning, means that efforts should be made by University Management to encourage and support Personal Innovativeness (and other creativities, as well) as a preferred teaching practice. 6. Internet use and psychosomatic symptoms among university students : cross-sectional studyGregor Štiglic, Ruth Masterson Creber, Leona Cilar Budler, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: Although the internet facilitates access to a wide range of knowledge and evidence, overuse among young people is associated with lower wellbeing and psychosomatic symptoms. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to explore the relationship between internet use, mental wellbeing, and psychosomatic symptoms among university students in Slovenia. Methods: We used correlation matrix plots to identify correlated symptoms and multivariate logistic regression to analyze the relationship between the time spent on the internet or computer and psychosomatic symptoms controlling for gender. Symptoms were measured using the Health Behavior of School Children scale. Results: Out of 464 students, the majority (64.7%, n = 300) were healthcare students and 35.3% (n = 164) were computer science students. Among somatic symptoms, headaches were associated with more time spent on the computer (r = −0.17, p < 0.001) and were significantly more prevalent in computer science students compared to health science students (χ2(1) = 8.52, p = 0.004). Time spent using the internet for spare time activities was associated with lower nervousness (r = 0.15, p = 0.005). Conclusions: Computer science students reported more frequent psychological symptoms compared to health science students and less somatic symptoms. 7. Has the COVID-19 pandemic affected mathematics achievement? : a case study of university students in social sciencesAnja Žnidaršič, Alenka Brezavšček, Gregor Rus, Janja Jerebic, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study examines the effects of COVID-19-related measures on the mathematics achievement of university students in social sciences in Slovenia. Our particular concern was to compare two student populations (pre-pandemic and pandemic) in terms of factors affecting student performance in mathematics courses. Data were collected over nine consecutive academic years (from 2013–2014 to 2020–2021) and analyzed using two-stage structural equation modelling (SEM). The analyses confirmed that the conceptual model developed before the pandemic was applicable during the pandemic period. For both populations (pre-pandemic and pandemic), mathematics confidence, perceived level of math anxiety, background knowledge from secondary school, and self-engagement in mathematics courses at university were confirmed as factors influencing mathematics achievement. Moreover, both populations perceived the effects of the factors in the same way, and the magnitude of the effects is comparable. The rather high values of determination coefficient for mathematics achievement (greater than 0.66 for both student populations) indicate that the variables “Perceived Level of Math Anxiety” and “Self-Engagement in Mathematics Course at University” together explain a significant proportion of the total variance before and during the pandemic. Consequently, the results of our case study indicated that pandemic measures did not have a significant impact on our students’ mathematics achievement. Although a more in-depth study of a broader sample of academic courses would be needed to confirm our findings, our experience indicates that mathematics courses at the tertiary level of education can be successfully delivered online. 9. Changed lifestyles during the COVID-19 pandemic : the need for health education in the curriculum of pedagogical studentsJoca Zurc, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The health education in schools became the focus of public attention during the global pandemic of COVID-19. Teaching practice changed to meet the increased demand for pupils’health, triggering a reevaluation of higher education curricula for pedagogical students. Therefore, this mixed methods study aimed to investigate the lifestyle of university students of pedagogy in Slovenia during the COVID-19 pandemic. One hundred and four students (87.4% females and 12.6% males) met the criteria and participated in an online survey in which they self-assessed their physical activity, eating habits, mental well-being, and sleep quality. The convergent parallel mixed methods design was used to obtain qualitative descriptions of student experiences withlifestyle domains and quantitative data on their attitudes towards the impact of lifestyle on physical and mental well-being during the pandemic. The results suggestthat the pandemic did significantly impact student lifestyles, especially their mental well-being. Although most students maintained a healthy lifestyle during the pandemic, they also reported a deterioration in other measured domains of health-related behaviour. Particular attention should, therefore, be paid to the curriculum of pedagogical students to develop their competences in health education and readiness toassume an active role as educators for their future pupils’ health. 10. The views and perceived experiences of prospective primary and subject teachers on forced remote education during the second COVID-19 lockdownKosta Dolenc, Mateja Ploj Virtič, Andrej Šorgo, 2023, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, university students and teachers had to adapt to distance learning during the closures. To better understand the student experience during the second closure, a study was conducted at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. The study aimed to analyze the views and experiences of 244 prospective primary and secondary teachers from three faculties. The study found that students had a higher workload during the closure, resulting in a preference for synchronous forms of online education over asynchronous ones. Despite this, students generally had positive experiences with their teachers, except for lack of spontaneous discussions. They also missed the social interactions with their classmates, which highlights the importance of the social dimension of education. Additionally, students were expected to participate in domestic activities, which could have mixed impacts on their educational outcomes. In summary, the student experiences with online distance learning were mixed, positively impacting quality of life but not necessarily on the quality of schooling. The findings can serve as a guide for organizing study programs or courses for prospective teachers in online distance education.
